Convex functions on graphs: Sum of the eigenvalues
Let $G$ be a simple graph with the Laplacian matrix $L(G)$ and let $e(G)$ be the number of edges of $G$. A conjecture by Brouwer and a conjecture by Grone and Merris state that the sum of the $k$ largest Laplacian eigenvalues of $G$ is at most $e(G)+\binom{k+1}{2}$ and $\sum_{i=1}^{k}d_{i}^{*}$, respectively, where $(d_{i}^{*})_{i}$ is the conjugate of the degree sequence $(d_i)_{i}$. We generalize these conjectures to weighted graphs and symmetric matrices. Moreover, among other results we show that under some assumptions, concave upper bounds on convex functions of symmetric real matrices are equivalent to concave upper bounds on convex functions of $(0,1)$ matrices.

Shift-Inequivalent Decimations of the Sidelnikov-Lempel-Cohn-Eastman Sequences
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the problem of finding maximal sets of shift-inequivalent decimations of Sidelnikov-Lempel-Cohn-Eastman (SLCE) sequences (as well as the equivalent problem of determining the multiplier groups of the almost difference sets associated with these sequences). We derive a numerical necessary condition for a residue to be a multiplier of an SLCE almost difference set. Using our necessary condition, we show that if $p$ is an odd prime and $S$ is an SLCE almost difference set over $\mathbb{F}_p,$ then the multiplier group of $S$ is trivial. Consequently, for each odd prime $p,$ we obtain a family of $φ(p-1)$ shift-inequivalent balanced periodic sequences (where $φ$ is the Euler-Totient function) each having period $p-1$ and nearly perfect autocorrelation.

FKN theorem for the multislice, with applications
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 29 (2020) 200-212 • View Publication • BIB
The Friedgut-Kalai-Naor (FKN) theorem states that if $f$ is a Boolean function on the Boolean cube which is close to degree 1, then $f$ is close to a dictator, a function depending on a single coordinate. The author has extended the theorem to the slice, the subset of the Boolean cube consisting of all vectors with fixed Hamming weight. We extend the theorem further, to the multislice, a multicoloured version of the slice. As an application, we prove a stability version of the edge-isoperimetric inequality for settings of parameters in which the optimal set is a dictator.

Stack-Sorting Preimages of Permutation Classes
We extend and generalize many of the enumerative results concerning West's stack-sorting map $s$. First, we prove a useful theorem that allows one to efficiently compute $|s^{-1}(π)|$ for any permutation $π$, answering a question of Bousquet-Mélou. We then enumerate permutations in various sets of the form $s^{-1}(\text{Av}(τ^{(1)},\ldots,τ^{(r)}))$, where $\text{Av}(τ^{(1)},\ldots,τ^{(r)})$ is the set of permutations avoiding the patterns $τ^{(1)},\ldots,τ^{(r)}$. These preimage sets often turn out to be permutation classes themselves, so the current paper represents a new approach, based on the theory of valid hook configurations, for solving classical enumerative problems. In one case, we solve a problem previously posed by Bruner. We are often able to refine our counts by enumerating these permutations according to their number of descents or peaks. Our investigation not only provides several new combinatorial interpretations and identities involving known sequences, but also paves the way for several new enumerative problems.

Decomposition of Augmented Cubes into Regular Connected Pancyclic Subgraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we consider the problem of decomposing the augmented cube $AQ_n$ into two spanning, regular, connected and pancyclic subgraphs. We prove that for $ n \geq 4$ and $ 2n - 1 = n_1 + n_2 $ with $ n_1, n_2 \geq 2,$ the augmented cube $ AQ_n$ can be decomposed into two spanning subgraphs $ H_1$ and $ H_2$ such that each $ H_i$ is $n_i$-regular and $n_i$-connected. Moreover, $H_i$ is $4$-pancyclic if $ n_i \geq 3.$
Minimum Eccentric Connectivity Index for Graphs with Fixed Order and Fixed Number of Pending Vertices
Published • View Publication • BIB
The eccentric connectivity index of a connected graph $G$ is the sum over all vertices $v$ of the product $d_{G}(v) e_{G}(v)$, where $d_{G}(v)$ is the degree of $v$ in $G$ and $e_{G}(v)$ is the maximum distance between $v$ and any other vertex of $G$. This index is helpful for the prediction of biological activities of diverse nature, a molecule being modeled as a graph where atoms are represented by vertices and chemical bonds by edges. We characterize those graphs which have the smallest eccentric connectivity index among all connected graphs of a given order $n$. Also, given two integers $n$ and $p$ with $p\leq n-1$, we characterize those graphs which have the smallest eccentric connectivity index among all connected graphs of order $n$ with $p$ pending vertices.

Hyperbolic polynomials and the Kadison-Singer problem
Recently Marcus, Spielman and Srivastava gave a spectacular proof of a theorem which implies a positive solution to the Kadison-Singer problem via Weaver's $KS_r$ conjecture. We extend this theorem to the realm of hyperbolic polynomials and hyperbolicity cones, as well as to arbitrary ranks. We also sharpen the theorem by providing better bounds, which imply better bounds in Weaver's $KS_r$ conjecture for each $r>2$. For $r=2$ our bound agrees with Bownik et al.

Fair splittings by independent sets in sparse graphs
Published in Israel J. Math. 236, 603-627 (2020) • View Publication • BIB
Given a partition $V_1 \sqcup V_2 \sqcup \dots \sqcup V_m$ of the vertex set of a graph, we are interested in finding multiple disjoint independent sets that contain the correct fraction of vertices of each $V_j$. We give conditions for the existence of $q$ such independent sets in terms of the topology of the independence complex. We relate this question to the existence of $q$-fold points of coincidence for any continuous map from the independence complex to Euclidean space of a certain dimension, and to the existence of equivariant maps from the $q$-fold deleted join of the independence complex to a certain representation sphere of the symmetric group. As a corollary we derive the existence of $q$ pairwise disjoint independent sets accurately representing the $V_j$ in certain sparse graphs for $q$ a power of a prime.

Unified spectral hamiltonian results of balanced bipartite graphs and complementary graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
There have been researches on sufficient spectral conditions for Hamiltonian properties and path-coverable properties of graphs. Utilizing the Bondy-Chvátal closure, we provide a unified approach to study sufficient graph eigenvalue conditions for these properties and sharpen former spectral results in [{\em Linear Algebra Appl.}, 432 (2010), 566-570], [{\em Linear Algebra Appl.}, 432 (2010), 2170-2173], [{\em Appl. Properties of stepwise irregular graphs
Stepwise irregular (SI) graphs were introduced by Ivan Gutman recently in 2018 and in these graphs the difference between the degrees of any two adjacent vertices is exactly one. In this work, we show the existence of connected bicyclic SI graphs of order 5 and 9 which has been claimed to be non-existent by Gutman. We also show the existence of SI graphs of different order and cyclomatic numbers when there exist a SI graph with a vertex of degree 1 or 2. We give a characterization on the order of the connected tricyclic SI graphs. At the end, we investigate some properties of the SI graphs under elementary graph operations along with the lower and upper bound of the irregularity of SI graphs.
The ancestral matrix of a rooted tree
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a rooted tree $T$ with leaves $v_1,v_2,\ldots,v_n$, we define the ancestral matrix $C(T)$ of $T$ to be the $n \times n$ matrix for which the entry in the $i$-th row, $j$-th column is the level (distance from the root) of the first common ancestor of $v_i$ and $v_j$. We study properties of this matrix, in particular regarding its spectrum: we obtain several upper and lower bounds for the eigenvalues in terms of other tree parameters. We also find a combinatorial interpretation for the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of $C(T)$, and show that for $d$-ary trees, a specific value of the characteristic polynomial is independent of the precise shape of the tree.

The Horn Problem for Real Symmetric and Quaternionic Self-Dual Matrices
Published in SIGMA 15 (2019), 029, 34 pages • View Publication • BIB
Horn's problem, i.e., the study of the eigenvalues of the sum $C=A+B$ of two matrices, given the spectrum of $A$ and of $B$, is re-examined, comparing the case of real symmetric, complex Hermitian and self-dual quaternionic $3\times 3$ matrices. In particular, what can be said on the probability distribution function (PDF) of the eigenvalues of $C$ if $A$ and $B$ are independently and uniformly distributed on their orbit under the action of, respectively, the orthogonal, unitary and symplectic group? While the two latter cases (Hermitian and quaternionic) may be studied by use of explicit formulae for the relevant orbital integrals, the case of real symmetric matrices is much harder. It is also quite intriguing, since numerical experiments reveal the occurrence of singularities where the PDF of the eigenvalues diverges. Here we show that the computation of the PDF of the symmetric functions of the eigenvalues for traceless $3\times 3$ matrices may be carried out in terms of algebraic functions;- roots of quartic polynomials;- and their integrals. The computation is carried out in detail in a particular case, and reproduces the expected singular patterns. The divergences are of logarithmic or inverse power type. We also relate this PDF to the (rescaled) structure constants of zonal polynomials and introduce a zonal analogue of the Weyl ${\rm SU}(n)$ characters.
The smallest strictly Neumaier graph and its generalisations
Published • View Publication • BIB
A regular clique in a regular graph is a clique such that every vertex outside of the clique is adjacent to the same positive number of vertices inside the clique. We continue the study of regular cliques in edge-regular graphs initiated by A. Neumaier in the 1980s and attracting current interest. We thus define a Neumaier graph to be an non-complete edge-regular graph containing a regular clique, and a strictly Neumaier graph to be a non-strongly regular Neumaier graph. We first prove some general results on Neumaier graphs and their feasible parameter tuples. We then apply these results to determine the smallest strictly Neumaier graph, which has $16$ vertices. Next we find the parameter tuples for all strictly Neumaier graphs having at most $24$ vertices. Finally, we give two sequences of graphs, each with $i^{\text{th}}$ element a strictly Neumaier graph containing a $2^{i}$-regular clique (where $i$ is a positive integer) and having parameters of an affine polar graph as an edge-regular graph. This answers questions recently posed by G. Greaves and J. Koolen.

Strongly regular graphs from weakly regular plateaued functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
The paper provides the first constructions of strongly regular graphs and association schemes from weakly regular plateaued functions over finite fields of odd characteristic. We generalize the construction method of strongly regular graphs from weakly regular bent functions given by Chee et al. in [Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics, 34(2), 251-266, 2011] to weakly regular plateaued functions. In this framework, we construct strongly regular graphs with three types of parameters from weakly regular plateaued functions with some homogeneous conditions. We also construct a family of association schemes of class p from weakly regular p-ary plateaued functions.

An extension of Stanley's chromatic symmetric function to binary delta-matroids
Stanley's symmetrized chromatic polynomial is a generalization of the ordinary chromatic polynomial to a graph invariant with values in a ring of polynomials in infnitely many variables. The ordinary chromatic polynomial is a specialization of the Stanley's one. Our goal is to extend Stanley's chromatic polynomial to embedded graphs. In contrast to well-known extensions of, say, the Tutte polynomial from abstract to embedded graphs [5], we do not treat an embedded graph as an abstract graph endowed with additional information about the embedding. Instead, we consider the binary delta-matroid associated to an embedded graph and define the extended Stanley's chromatic polynomial as an invariant of delta-matroids. We show that, similarly to Stanley's symmetrized chromatic polynomial of graphs, which satisfies 4-term relations for simple graphs and determines in this way a knot invariant, extended Stanley's chromatic polynomial of binary delta-matroids we define satisfies the 4-term relations for binary delta-matroids [10] and determines, therefore, an invariant of links.

Periodic structure of translational multi-tilings in the plane
Published • View Publication • BIB
Suppose $f\in L^1(\mathbb{R}^d)$, $Λ\subset\mathbb{R}^d$ is a finite union of translated lattices such that $f+Λ$ tiles with a weight. We prove that there exists a lattice $L\subset{\mathbb{R}}^d$ such that $f+L$ also tiles, with a possibly different weight. As a corollary, together with a result of Kolountzakis, it implies that any convex polygon that multi-tiles the plane by translations admits a lattice multi-tiling, of a possibly different multiplicity. Our second result is a new characterization of convex polygons that multi-tile the plane by translations. It also provides a very efficient criteria to tell whether a convex polygon admits translational multi-tilings. As an application, one can easily construct symmetric $(2m)$-gons, for any $m\geq 4$, that do not multi-tile by translations. Finally, we prove a convex polygon which is not a parallelogram only admits periodic multiple tilings, if any.

A log-Sobolev inequality for the multislice, with applications
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $κ\in \mathbb{N}_+^\ell$ satisfy $κ_1 + \dots + κ_\ell = n$ and let $\mathcal{U}_κ$ denote the "multislice" of all strings $u$ in $[\ell]^n$ having exactly $κ_i$ coordinates equal to $i$, for all $i \in [\ell]$. Consider the Markov chain on $\mathcal{U}_κ$, where a step is a random transposition of two coordinates of $u$. We show that the log-Sobolev constant $ρ_κ$ for the chain satisfies $$(ρ_κ)^{-1} \leq n \sum_{i=1}^{\ell} \tfrac{1}{2} \log_2(4n/κ_i),$$ which is sharp up to constants whenever $\ell$ is constant. From this, we derive some consequences for small-set expansion and isoperimetry in the multislice, including a KKL Theorem, a Kruskal--Katona Theorem for the multislice, a Friedgut Junta Theorem, and a Nisan--Szegedy Theorem.

Unicyclic Strong Permutations
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we study some properties of a certain kind of permutation $σ$ over $\mathbb{F}_{2}^{n}$, where $n$ is a positive integer. The desired properties for $σ$ are: (1) the algebraic degree of each component function is $n-1$; (2) the permutation is unicyclic; (3) the number of terms of the algebraic normal form of each component is at least $2^{n-1}$. We call permutations that satisfy these three properties simultaneously unicyclic strong permutations. We prove that our permutations $σ$ always have high algebraic degree and that the average number of terms of each component function tends to $2^{n-1}$. We also give a condition on the cycle structure of $σ$. We observe empirically that for $n$ even, our construction does not provide unicylic permutations. For $n$ odd, $n \leq 11$, we conduct an exhaustive search of all $σ$ given our construction for specific examples of unicylic strong permutations. We also present some empirical results on the difference tables and linear approximation tables of $σ$.
