Clique-factors in sparse pseudorandom graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that for any $t\ge 3$ there exist constants $c>0$ and $n_0$ such that any $d$-regular $n$-vertex graph $G$ with $t\mid n\geq n_0$ and second largest eigenvalue in absolute value $λ$ satisfying $λ\le c d^{t}/n^{t-1}$ contains a $K_t$-factor, that is, vertex-disjoint copies of $K_t$ covering every vertex of $G$.
On iterated product sets with shifts II
Published • View Publication • BIB
The main result of this paper is the following: for all $b \in \mathbb Z$ there exists $k=k(b)$ such that \[ \max \{ |A^{(k)}|, |(A+u)^{(k)}| \} \geq |A|^b, \] for any finite $A \subset \mathbb Q$ and any non-zero $u \in \mathbb Q$. Here, $|A^{(k)}|$ denotes the $k$-fold product set $\{a_1\cdots a_k : a_1, \dots, a_k \in A \}$. Furthermore, our method of proof also gives the following $l_{\infty}$ sum-product estimate. For all $γ>0$ there exists a constant $C=C(γ)$ such that for any $A \subset \mathbb Q$ with $|AA| \leq K|A|$ and any $c_1,c_2 \in \mathbb Q \setminus \{0\}$, there are at most $K^C|A|^γ$ solutions to \[ c_1x + c_2y =1 ,\,\,\,\,\,\,\, (x,y) \in A \times A. \] In particular, this result gives a strong bound when $K=|A|^ε$, provided that $ε>0$ is sufficiently small, and thus improves on previous bounds obtained via the Subspace Theorem. In further applications we give a partial structure theorem for point sets which determine many incidences and prove that sum sets grow arbitrarily large by taking sufficiently many products. We utilise a query-complexity analogue of the polynomial Freiman-Ruzsa conjecture, due to Zhelezov and Pálvölgyi. This new tool replaces the role of the complicated setup of Bourgain and Chang, which we had previously used. Furthermore, there is a better quantitative dependence between the parameters.

The poset of graphs ordered by induced containment
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the poset $\mathcal{G}$ of all unlabelled graphs, up to isomorphism, with $H\le G$ if $H$ occurs as an induced subgraph in $G$. We present some general results on the Möbius function of intervals of $\mathcal{G}$ and some results for specific classes of graphs. This includes a case where the Möbius function is given by the Catalan numbers, which we prove using discrete Morse theory, and another case where it equals the Fibonacci numbers, therefore showing that the Möbius function is unbounded. A classification of the disconnected intervals of $\mathcal{G}$ is presented, which gives a large class of non-shellable intervals. We also present several conjectures on the structure of $\mathcal{G}$.

Geometry and algorithms for upper triangular tropical matrix identities
Published • View Publication • BIB
We provide geometric methods and algorithms to verify, construct and enumerate pairs of words (of specified length over a fixed $m$-letter alphabet) that form identities in the semigroup $\ut{n}$ of $n\times n$ upper triangular tropical matrices. In the case $n=2$ these identities are precisely those satisfied by the bicyclic monoid, whilst in the case $n=3$ they form a subset of the identities which hold in the plactic monoid of rank $3$. To each word we associate a signature sequence of lattice polytopes, and show that two words form an identity for $\ut{n}$ if and only if their signatures are equal. Our algorithms are thus based on polyhedral computations and achieve optimal complexity in some cases. For $n=m=2$ we prove a Structural Theorem, which allows us to quickly enumerate the pairs of words of fixed length which form identities for $\ut{2}$. This allows us to recover a short proof of Adjan's theorem on minimal length identities for the bicyclic monoid, and to construct minimal length identities for $\ut{3}$, providing counterexamples to a conjecture of Izhakian in this case. We conclude with six conjectures at the intersection of semigroup theory, probability and combinatorics, obtained through analysing the outputs of our algorithms.

A note on domination in intersecting linear systems
A linear system is a pair $(P,\mathcal{L})$ where $\mathcal{L}$ is a family of subsets on a ground finite set $P$ such that $|l\cap l^\prime|\leq 1$, for every $l,l^\prime \in \mathcal{L}$. The elements of $P$ and $\mathcal{L}$ are called points and lines, respectively, and the linear system is called intersecting if any pair of lines intersect in exactly one point. A subset $D$ of points of a linear system $(P,\mathcal{L})$ is a dominating set of $(P,\mathcal{L})$ if for every $u\in P\setminus D$ there exists $v\in D$ such that $u,v\in l$, for some $l\in\mathcal{L}$. The cardinality of a minimum dominating set of a linear system $(P,\mathcal{L})$ is called domination number of $(P,\mathcal{L})$, denoted by $γ(P,\mathcal{L})$. On the other hand, a subset $R$ of lines of a linear system $(P,\mathcal{L})$ is a 2-packing if any three elements of $R$ have not a common point (are triplewise disjoint). The cardinality of a maximum 2-packing of a linear system $(P,\mathcal{L})$ is called 2-packing number of $(P,\mathcal{L})$, denoted by $ν_2(P,\mathcal{L})$. It is know for intersecting linear systems $(P,\mathcal{L})$ of rank $r$ it satisfies $γ(P,\mathcal{L})\leq r-1$. In this note we prove, if $q$ is an even prime power and $(P,\mathcal{L})$ is an intersecting linear system of rank $q+2$ satisfying $γ(P,\mathcal{L})=q+1$, then this linear system can be constructed from a spanning $(q+1)$-uniform intersecting linear subsystem $(P^\prime,\mathcal{L}^\prime)$ of the projective plane of order $q$ satisfying $τ(P^\prime,\mathcal{L}^\prime)=ν_2(P^\prime,\mathcal{L}^\prime)-1=q+1$.

Frieze Vectors and Unitary Friezes
Published in J. Comb. 11 (2020), no. 4, 681-703 • View Publication • BIB
Let Q be a quiver without loops and 2-cycles, let A(Q) be the corresponding cluster algebra and let x be a cluster. We introduce a new class of integer vectors which we call frieze vectors relative to x. These frieze vectors are defined as solutions of certain Diophantine equations given by the cluster variables in the cluster algebra. We show that every cluster gives rise to a frieze vector and that the frieze vector determines the cluster. We also study friezes of type Q as homomorphisms from the cluster algebra to an arbitrary integral domain. In particular, we show that every positive integral frieze of affine Dynkin type A is unitary, which means it is obtained by specializing each cluster variable in one cluster to the constant 1. This completes the answer to the question of unitarity for all positive integral friezes of Dynkin and affine Dynkin types.
Counting walks with large steps in an orthant
Published • View Publication • BIB
In the past fifteen years, the enumeration of lattice walks with steps takenin a prescribed set S and confined to a given cone, especially the firstquadrant of the plane, has been intensely studied. As a result, the generating functions ofquadrant walks are now well-understood, provided the allowed steps aresmall, that is $S \subset \{-1, 0,1\}^2$. In particular, having smallsteps is crucial for the definition of a certain group of bi-rationaltransformations of the plane. It has been proved that this group is finite ifand only if the corresponding generating function is D-finite (that is, it satisfies a lineardifferential equation with polynomial coefficients). This group is also thekey to the uniform solution of 19 of the 23 small step models possessing afinite group. In contrast, almost nothing is known for walks with arbitrary steps. In thispaper, we extend the definition of the group, or rather of the associatedorbit, to this general case, and generalize the above uniform solution ofsmall step models. When this approach works, it invariably yields a D-finitegenerating function. We apply it to many quadrant problems, including some infinite families. After developing the general theory, we consider the $13\ 110$ two-dimensionalmodels with steps in $\{-2,-1,0,1\}^2$ having at least one $-2$ coordinate. Weprove that only 240 of them have a finite orbit, and solve 231 of them withour method. The 9 remaining models are the counterparts of the 4 models of thesmall step case that resist the uniform solution method (and which are knownto have an algebraic generating function). We conjecture D-finiteness for their generatingfunctions, but only two of them are likely to be algebraic. We also provenon-D-finiteness for the $12\ 870$ models with an infinite orbit, except for16 of them.

Integrality of Subgradients and Biconjugates of Integrally Convex Functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Integrally convex functions constitute a fundamental function class in discrete convex analysis. This paper shows that an integer-valued integrally convex function admits an integral subgradient and that the integral biconjugate of an integer-valued integrally convex function coincides with itself. The proof is based on the Fourier-Motzkin elimination. The latter result provides a unified proof of integral biconjugacy for various classes of integer-valued discrete convex functions, including L-convex, M-convex, L$_{2}$-convex, M$_{2}$-convex, BS-convex, and UJ-convex functions as well as multimodular functions. Our results of integral subdifferentiability and integral biconjugacy make it possible to extend the theory of discrete DC (difference of convex) functions developed for L- and M-convex functions to that for integrally convex functions, including an analogue of the Toland--Singer duality for integrally convex functions.

Equitable Coloring and Equitable Choosability of Planar Graphs without chordal 4- and 6-Cycles
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 21 no. 3 , Graph Theory (November 11, 2019) dmtcs:4566 • View Publication • BIB
A graph $G$ is equitably $k$-choosable if, for any given $k$-uniform list assignment $L$, $G$ is $L$-colorable and each color appears on at most $\lceil\frac{|V(G)|}{k}\rceil$ vertices. A graph is equitably $k$-colorable if the vertex set $V(G)$ can be partitioned into $k$ independent subsets $V_1$, $V_2$, $\cdots$, $V_k$ such that $||V_i|-|V_j||\leq 1$ for $1\leq i, j\leq k$. In this paper, we prove that if $G$ is a planar graph without chordal $4$- and $6$-cycles, then $G$ is equitably $k$-colorable and equitably $k$-choosable where $k\geq\max\{Δ(G), 7\}$.

Cross-intersecting non-empty uniform subfamilies of hereditary families
Published • View Publication • BIB
A set $A$ $t$-intersects a set $B$ if $A$ and $B$ have at least $t$ common elements. A set of sets is called a family. Two families $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{B}$ are cross-$t$-intersecting if each set in $\mathcal{A}$ $t$-intersects each set in $\mathcal{B}$. A family $\mathcal{H}$ is hereditary if for each set $A$ in $\mathcal{H}$, all the subsets of $A$ are in $\mathcal{H}$. The $r$th level of $\mathcal{H}$, denoted by $\mathcal{H}^{(r)}$, is the family of $r$-element sets in $\mathcal{H}$. A set $B$ in $\mathcal{H}$ is a base of $\mathcal{H}$ if for each set $A$ in $\mathcal{H}$, $B$ is not a proper subset of $A$. Let $μ(\mathcal{H})$ denote the size of a smallest base of $\mathcal{H}$. We show that for any integers $t$, $r$, and $s$ with $1 \leq t \leq r \leq s$, there exists an integer $c(r,s,t)$ such that the following holds for any hereditary family $\mathcal{H}$ with $μ(\mathcal{H}) \geq c(r,s,t)$. If $\mathcal{A}$ is a non-empty subfamily of $\mathcal{H}^{(r)}$, $\mathcal{B}$ is a non-empty subfamily of $\mathcal{H}^{(s)}$, $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{B}$ are cross-$t$-intersecting, and $|\mathcal{A}| + |\mathcal{B}|$ is maximum under the given conditions, then for some set $I$ in $\mathcal{H}$ with $t \leq |I| \leq r$, either $\mathcal{A} = \{A \in \mathcal{H}^{(r)} \colon I \subseteq A\}$ and $\mathcal{B} = \{B \in \mathcal{H}^{(s)} \colon |B \cap I| \geq t\}$, or $r = s$, $t < |I|$, $\mathcal{A} = \{A \in \mathcal{H}^{(r)} \colon |A \cap I| \geq t\}$, and $\mathcal{B} = \{B \in \mathcal{H}^{(s)} \colon I \subseteq B\}$. This was conjectured by the author for $t=1$ and generalizes well-known results for the case where $\mathcal{H}$ is a power set.

Bilateral identities of the Rogers--Ramanujan type
Published • View Publication • BIB
We derive by analytic means a number of bilateral identities of the Rogers--Ramanujan type. Our results include bilateral extensions of the Rogers--Ramanujan and the Göllnitz-Gordon identities, and of related identities by Ramanujan, Jackson, and Slater. We give corresponding results for multiseries including multilateral extensions of the Andrews--Gordon identities, of the Andrews--Bressoud generalization of the Göllnitz--Gordon identities, of Bressoud's even modulus identities, and other identities. Our closed form bilateral and multilateral summations appear to be the very first of their kind.

Vexillary signed permutations revisited
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the combinatorial properties of vexillary signed permutations, which are signed analogues of the vexillary permutations first considered by Lascoux and Schützenberger. We give several equivalent characterizations of vexillary signed permutations, including descriptions in terms of essential sets and pattern avoidance, and we relate them to the vexillary elements introduced by Billey and Lam.

On sunlet graphs connected to a specific map on $\{1,2,\dots,p-1\}$

In this article, we study the structure of the graph implied by a given map on the set $S_p=\{1,2,\dots,p-1\}$, where $p$ is an odd prime. The consecutive applications of the map generate an integer sequence, or in graph theoretical context a walk, that is linked to the discrete logarithm problem.

Hypergraph encoding set systems and their linear representations
We study $t$-designs of parameters $(n,k,λ)$ over finite fields as group divisible designs and set systems admitting a transitive action of a linear group encoded in an hypergraph $G$ whose vertex set of size $n$ is partitioned into sets of size $k$ in such a way that every $t$-subset is contained in at least $λ$ subsets of $G$. We relate the problem to the representation theory of the general linear group $\GL(n,\mathbb{F}_{q})$ and the constructions of AG codes over finite fields.

Lifting tropical self intersections
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the tropicalization of intersections of plane curves, under the assumption that they have the same tropicalization. We show that the set of tropical divisors that arise in this manner is a pure dimensional balanced polyhedral complex and compute its dimension. When the genus is at most 1, we show that all the tropical divisors that move in the expected dimension are realizable. As part of the proof, we introduce a combinatorial tool for explicitly constructing large families of realizable tropical divisors.

Strong Pseudo Transitivity and Intersection Graphs
A directed graph $G=(V,E)$ is {\it strongly pseudo transitive} if there is a partition $\{A,E-A\}$ of $E$ so that graphs $G_1=(V,A)$ and $G_2=(V,E-A)$ are transitive, and additionally, if $ab\in A$ and $bc\in E $ implies that $ac\in E$. A strongly pseudo transitive graph $G=(V,E)$ is strongly pseudo transitive of the first type, if $ab\in A$ and $bc\in E$ implies $ac\in A$. An undirected graph is co-strongly pseudo transitive (co-strongly pseudo transitive of the first type) if its complement has an orientation which is strongly pseudo transitive (co-strongly pseudo transitive of the first type). Our purpose is show that the results in computational geometry \cite{CFP, Lu} and intersection graph theory \cite{Ga2, ES} can be unified and extended, using the notion of strong pseudo transitivity. As a consequence the general algorithmic framework in \cite{Sh} is applicable to solve the maximum independent set in $O(n^3)$ time in a variety of problems, thereby, avoiding case by case lengthily arguments for each problem. We show that the intersection graphs of axis parallel rectangles intersecting a diagonal line from bottom, and half segments are co-strongly pseudo transitive. In addition, we show that the class of the interval filament graphs is co-strongly transitive of the first type, and hence the class of polygon circle graphs which is contained in the class of interval filament graphs (but contains the classes of chordal graphs, circular arc, circle, and outer planar graphs), and the class of incomparability graphs are strongly transitive of the first type. For class of chordal graphs we give two different proofs, using two different characterizations, verifying that they are co-strongly transitive of the first type. We present some containment results.

Invertibility of adjacency matrices for random d-regular directed graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $d\geq 3$ be a fixed integer, and a prime number $p$ such that $\gcd(p,d)=1$. Let $A$ be the adjacency matrix of a random $d$-regular directed graph on $n$ vertices. We show that as a random matrix in ${\mathbb F}_p$, \begin{equation} {\mathbb P}(\text{$A$ is singular in ${\mathbb F}_p$})\leq \frac{1+{\mathrm{o}}(1)}{p-1}, \end{equation} as $n$ goes to infinity. As a consequence, as a random matrix in $\mathbb R$, \begin{equation} {\mathbb P}(\text{$A$ is singular in $\mathbb R$})={\mathrm{o}}(1) \end{equation} as $n$ goes to infinity. This answers an open problem by Frieze [12] and Vu [29,30], for random $d$-regular bipartite graphs. The proof combines a local central limit theorem and a large deviation estimate.

Partitioning transitive tournaments into isomorphic digraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In an earlier paper the first two authors have shown that self-complementary graphs can always be oriented in such a way that the union of the oriented version and its isomorphically oriented complement gives a transitive tournament. We investigate the possibilities of generalizing this theorem to decompositions of the complete graph into three or more isomorphic graphs. We find that a complete characterization of when an orientation with similar properties is possible seems elusive. Nevertheless, we give sufficient conditions that generalize the earlier theorem and also imply that decompositions of odd vertex complete graphs to Hamiltonian cycles admit such an orientation. These conditions are further generalized and some necessary conditions are given as well.

Spanning trees with at most 2 branch vertices in claw - free graphs
In this article, we will prove that if $G$ is a connected claw-free graph and either $σ_6(G)\geq |G|-5$ or $σ_7(G)\geq |G|-2$, here $σ_k(G)$ is the minimmum degree sum of $k$ independent vertices in $G$, then $G$ has a spanning tree with at most two branch vertices.
