Combinatorial identities involving harmonic numbers
In this work we prove a new combinatorial identity and applying it we establish many finite harmonic sum identities. Among many others, we prove that \begin{equation*} \sum_{k=1}^{n}\frac{(-1)^{k-1}}{k}\binom{n}{k}H_{n-k}=H_n^2+\sum_{k=1}^{n}\frac{(-1)^{k}}{k^2\binom{n}{k}}, \end{equation*} and \begin{equation*} \sum_{k=1}^{n}\frac{(-1)^{k-1}}{k^2}\binom{n}{k}H_{n-k}=\frac{H_n[H_n^2+H_n^{(2)}]}{2}-\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}\frac{(-1)^k[H_n-H_k]}{(k+1)(n-k)\binom{n}{k}}. \end{equation*} Almost all of our results are new, while a few of them recapture know results.
Periodic Pólya urns and an application to Young tableaux
Published in Leibniz International Proceedings in Informatics (LIPIcs), 29th International Conference on Probabilistic, Combinatorial and Asymptotic Methods for the Analysis of Algorithms (AofA 2018), pp.1-12 • View Publication • BIB
P{ó}lya urns are urns where at each unit of time a ball is drawn and is replaced with some other balls according to its colour. We introduce a more general model: The replacement rule depends on the colour of the drawn ball and the value of the time (mod p). We discuss some intriguing properties of the differential operators associated to the generating functions encoding the evolution of these urns. The initial partial differential equation indeed leads to ordinary linear differential equations and we prove that the moment generating functions are D-finite. For a subclass, we exhibit a closed form for the corresponding generating functions (giving the exact state of the urns at time n). When the time goes to infinity, we show that these periodic P{ó}lya urns follow a rich variety of behaviours: their asymptotic fluctuations are described by a family of distributions, the generalized Gamma distributions, which can also be seen as powers of Gamma distributions. En passant, we establish some enumerative links with other combinatorial objects, and we give an application for a new result on the asymptotics of Young tableaux: This approach allows us to prove that the law of the lower right corner in a triangular Young tableau follows asymptotically a product of generalized Gamma distributions.
The characterization of perfect Roman domination stable trees
A \emph{perfect Roman dominating function} (PRDF) on a graph $G = (V, E)$ is a function $f : V \rightarrow \{0, 1, 2\}$ satisfying the condition that every vertex $u$ for which $f(u) = 0$ is adjacent to exactly one vertex $v$ for which $f(v) = 2$. The weight of a PRDF is the value $w(f) = \sum_{u \in V}f(u)$. The minimum weight of a PRDF on a graph $G$ is called the \emph{perfect Roman domination number $γ_R^p(G)$} of $G$. A graph $G$ is perfect Roman domination domination stable if the perfect Roman domination number of $G$ remains unchanged under the removal of any vertex. In this paper, we characterize all trees that are perfect Roman domination stable.
Peak positions of strongly unimodal sequences

We study combinatorial and asymptotic properties of the rank of strongly unimodal sequences. We find a generating function for the rank enumeration function, and give a new combinatorial interpretation of the ospt-function introduced by Andrews, Chan, and Kim. We conjecture that the enumeration function for the number of unimodal sequences of a fixed size and varying rank is log-concave, and prove an asymptotic result in support of this conjecture. Finally, we determine the asymptotic behavior of the rank for strongly unimodal sequences, and prove that its values (when appropriately renormalized) are normally distributed with mean zero in the asymptotic limit.

A Proof the Functional Equation Conjecture
In the early 2000's the first and second named authors worked for a period of six years in an attempt of proving the Compositional Shuffle Conjecture [1]. Their approach was based on the discovery that all the Combinatorial properties predicted by the Compositional Shuffle Conjecture remain valid for each family of Parking Functions with prescribed diagonal cars. The validity of this property was reduced to the proof of a functional equation satisfied by a Catalan family of univariate polynomials. The main result in this paper is a proof of this functional equation. The Compositional Shuffle Conjecture was proved in 2015 by Eric Carlsson and Anton Mellit [3]. Our proof of the Functional Equation removes one of the main obstacles in the completion of the Garsia-Hicks approach to the proof of the Compositional Shuffle Conjecture. At the end of this writing we formulate a few further conjectures including what remains to be proved to complete this approach.

From unicellular fatgraphs to trees
In this paper we study the minimum number of reversals needed to transform a unicellular fatgraph into a tree. We consider reversals acting on boundary components, having the natural interpretation as gluing, slicing or half-flipping of vertices. Our main result is an expression for the minimum number of reversals needed to transform a unicellular fatgraph to a plane tree. The expression involves the Euler genus of the fatgraph and an additional parameter, which counts the number of certain orientable blocks in the decomposition of the fatgraph. In the process we derive a constructive proof of how to decompose non-orientable, irreducible, unicellular fatgraphs into smaller fatgraphs of the same type or trivial fatgraphs, consisting of a single ribbon. We furthermore provide a detailed analysis how reversals affect the component-structure of the underlying fatgraphs. Our results generalize the Hannenhalli-Pevzner formula for the reversal distance of signed permutations.

A large number of $m$-coloured complete infinite subgraphs
Given an edge colouring of a graph with a set of $m$ colours, we say that the graph is $m$-\textit{coloured} if each of the $m$ colours is used. For an $m$-colouring $Δ$ of $\mathbb{N}^{(2)}$, the complete graph on $\mathbb{N}$, we denote by $\mathcal{F}_Δ$ the set all values $γ$ for which there exists an infinite subset $X\subset \mathbb{N}$ such that $X^{(2)}$ is $γ$-coloured. Properties of this set were first studied by Erickson in $1994$. Here, we are interested in estimating the minimum size of $\mathcal{F}_Δ$ over all $m$-colourings $Δ$ of $\mathbb{N}^{(2)}$. Indeed, we shall prove the following result. There exists an absolute constant $α> 0$ such that for any positive integer $m \neq \left\{ {n \choose 2}+1, {n \choose 2}+2: n\geq 2\right\}$, $|\mathcal{F}_Δ| \geq (1+α)\sqrt{2m}$, for any $m$-colouring $Δ$ of $\mathbb{N}^{(2)}$, thus proving a conjecture of Narayanan. This result is tight up to the order of the constant $α$.

Rigidity with few locations
Published • View Publication • BIB
Graphs triangulating the $2$-sphere are generically rigid in $3$-space, due to Gluck-Dehn-Alexandrov-Cauchy. We show there is a \emph{finite} subset $A$ in $3$-space so that the vertices of each graph $G$ as above can be mapped into $A$ to make the resulted embedding of $G$ infinitesimally rigid. This assertion extends to the triangulations of any fixed compact connected surface, where the upper bound obtained on the size of $A$ increases with the genus. The assertion fails, namely no such finite $A$ exists, for the larger family of all graphs that are generically rigid in $3$-space and even in the plane.

The rainbow-spectrum of RNA secondary structures
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we analyze the length-spectrum of rainbows in RNA secondary structures. A rainbow in a secondary structure is a maximal arc with respect to the partial order induced by nesting. We show that there is a significant gap in this length-spectrum. We shall prove that there asymptotically almost surely exists a unique longest rainbow of length at least $n-O(n^{1/2})$ and that with high probability any other rainbow has finite length. We show that the distribution of the length of the longest rainbow converges to a discrete limit law and that, for finite $k$, the distribution of rainbows of length $k$, becomes for large $n$ a negative binomial distribution. We then put the results of this paper into context, comparing the analytical results with those observed in RNA minimum free energy structures, biological RNA structures and relate our findings to the sparsification of folding algorithms.

On simple connectivity of random 2-complexes
Published • View Publication • BIB
The fundamental group of the $2$-dimensional Linial-Meshulam random simplicial complex $Y_2(n,p)$ was first studied by Babson, Hoffman and Kahle. They proved that the threshold probability for simple connectivity of $Y_2(n,p)$ is about $p\approx n^{-1/2}$. In this paper, we show that this threshold probability is at most $p\le (γn)^{-1/2}$, where $γ= 4^4/3^3$, and conjecture that this threshold is sharp. In fact, we show that $p=(γn)^{-1/2}$ is a sharp threshold probability for the stronger property that every cycle of length $3$ is the boundary of a subcomplex of $Y_2(n,p)$ that is homeomorphic to a disk. Our proof uses the Poisson paradigm, and relies on a classical result of Tutte on the enumeration of planar triangulations.
Splitting loops and necklaces: Variants of the square peg problem
Published in Forum Math. Sigma 8, e5 (2020) • View Publication • BIB
Toeplitz conjectured that any simple planar loop inscribes a square. Here we prove variants of Toeplitz' square peg problem. We prove Hadwiger's 1971 conjecture that any simple loop in $3$-space inscribes a parallelogram. We show that any simple planar loop inscribes sufficiently many rectangles that their vertices are dense in the loop (independently due to Schwartz). If the loop is rectifiable, there is a rectangle that cuts the loop into four pieces that can be rearranged to form two loops of equal length. A rectifiable loop in $d$-space can be cut into $(r-1)(d+1)+1$ pieces that can be rearranged by translations to form $r$ loops of equal length. We relate our results to fair divisions of necklaces in the sense of Alon and to Tverberg-type results. This provides a new approach and a common framework to obtain variants of Toeplitz' square peg problem for the class of all continuous curves.

$k$-Sets and Rectilinear Crossings in Complete Uniform Hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we study the $d$-dimensional rectilinear drawings of the complete $d$-uniform hypergraph $K_{2d}^d$. Anshu et al. [Computational Geometry: Theory and Applications, 2017] used Gale transform and Ham-Sandwich theorem to prove that there exist $Ω\left(2^d\right)$ crossing pairs of hyperedges in such a drawing of $K_{2d}^d$. We improve this lower bound by showing that there exist $Ω\left(2^d \sqrt{ d}\right)$ crossing pairs of hyperedges in a $d$-dimensional rectilinear drawing of $K_{2d}^d$. We also prove the following results. 1. There are $Ω\left(2^d {d^{3/2}}\right)$ crossing pairs of hyperedges in a $d$-dimensional rectilinear drawing of $K_{2d}^d$ when its $2d$ vertices are either not in convex position in $\mathbb{R}^d$ or form the vertices of a $d$-dimensional convex polytope that is $t$-neighborly but not $(t+1)$-neighborly for some constant $t\geq1$ independent of $d$. 2. There are $Ω\left(2^d {d^{5/2}}\right)$ crossing pairs of hyperedges in a $d$-dimensional rectilinear drawing of $K_{2d}^d$ when its $2d$ vertices form the vertices of a $d$-dimensional convex polytope that is $(\lfloor{d/2}\rfloor-t')$-neighborly for some constant $t' \geq 0$ independent of $d$.

The $A_α$-spectral radius of graphs with given degree sequence
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a graph with adjacency matrix $A(G)$, and let $D(G)$ be the diagonal matrix of the degrees of $G$. For any real $α\in[0,1]$, write $A_α(G)$ for the matrix $$A_α(G)=αD(G)+(1-α)A(G).$$ This paper presents some extremal results about the spectral radius $ρ(A_α(G))$ of $A_α(G)$ that generalize previous results about $ρ(A_0(G))$ and $ρ(A_{\frac{1}{2}}(G))$. In this paper, we give some results on graph perturbation for $A_α$-matrix with $α\in [0,1)$. As applications, we characterize all extremal trees with the maximum $A_α$-spectral radius in the set of all trees with prescribed degree sequence firstly. Furthermore, we characterize the unicyclic graphs that have the largest $A_α$-spectral radius for a given unicycilc degree sequence.
On the spectral determinations of the connected multicone graphs $ K_r\bigtriangledown sK_t $
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this study we investigate the spectra of the family of connected multicone graphs. A multicone graph is defined to be the join of a clique and a regular graph. Let $ r $, $ t $ and $ s $ be natural numbers, and let $ K_r $ denote a complete graph on $ r $ vertices. It is proved that connected multicone graphs $ K_r\bigtriangledown sK_t $, a natural generalization of friendship graphs, are determined by their adjacency spectra as well as their Laplacian spectra. Also, we show that the complement of multicone graphs $ K_r\bigtriangledown sK_t $ are determined by their adjacency spectra, where $ s\neq 2 $.

On a characterization of the Grassmann graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 1995, Metsch showed that the Grassmann graph $J_q(n,D)$ of diameter $D\geq 3$ is characterized by its intersection numbers with the following possible exceptions: (-) $n=2D$ or $n=2D+1$, $q\geq 2$; (-) $n=2D+2$ and $q\in \{2,3\}$; (-) $n=2D+3$ and $q=2$. In 2005, Van Dam and Koolen constructed the twisted Grassmann graphs with the same intersection numbers as the Grassmann graphs $J_q(2D+1,D)$, for any prime power $q$ and diameter $D\geq 2$, but they are not isomorphic. We show that the Grassmann graph $J_q(2D,D)$ is characterized by its intersection numbers provided that the diameter $D$ is large enough.

Correlation bounds for fields and matroids
Published in Journal of the European Mathematical Society 24 (2022), 1335-1351 • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a finite connected graph, and let $T$ be a spanning tree of $G$ chosen uniformly at random. The work of Kirchhoff on electrical networks can be used to show that the events $e_1 \in T$ and $e_2 \in T$ are negatively correlated for any distinct edges $e_1$ and $e_2$. What can be said for such events when the underlying matroid is not necessarily graphic? We use Hodge theory for matroids to bound the correlation between the events $e \in B$, where $B$ is a randomly chosen basis of a matroid. As an application, we prove Mason's conjecture that the number of $k$-element independent sets of a matroid forms an ultra-log-concave sequence in $k$.

An Experimental Mathematics Approach to the Area Statistic of Parking Functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We illustrate the experimental, empirical, approach to mathematics (that contrary to popular belief, is often rigorous), by using parking functions and their "area" statistic, as a case study. Our methods are purely finitistic and elementary, taking full advantage, of course, of our beloved silicon servants.

Connectedness of projective codes in the Grassmann graph

Spectral lower bounds for the orthogonal and projective ranks of a graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
The orthogonal rank of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is the smallest dimension $ξ$ such that there exist non-zero column vectors $x_v\in\mathbb{C}^ξ$ for $v\in V$ satisfying the orthogonality condition $x_v^\dagger x_w=0$ for all $vw\in E$. We prove that many spectral lower bounds for the chromatic number, $χ$, are also lower bounds for $ξ$. This result complements a previous result by the authors, in which they showed that spectral lower bounds for $χ$ are also lower bounds for the quantum chromatic number $χ_q$. It is known that the quantum chromatic number and the orthogonal rank are incomparable. We conclude by proving an inertial lower bound for the projective rank $ξ_f$, and conjecture that a stronger inertial lower bound for $ξ$ is also a lower bound for $ξ_f$.

Supercongruences concerning truncated hypergeometric series

Let $n\geq 3$ be an integer and $p$ be a prime with $p\equiv 1\pmod{n}$. In this paper, we show that $${}_nF_{n-1}\bigg[\begin{matrix} \frac{n-1}{n}&\frac{n-1}{n}&\ldots&\frac{n-1}{n}\\ &1&\ldots&1\end{matrix}\bigg | \, 1\bigg]_{p-1}\equiv -Γ_p\bigg(\frac{1}{n}\bigg)^n\pmod{p^3}, $$ where the truncated hypergeometric series $$_nF_{n-1} \bigg[\begin{matrix} x_1&x_2&\ldots&x_n\\ &y_1&\cdots&y_{n-1}\end{matrix}\bigg | \, z\bigg]_m=\sum_{k=0}^{m}\frac{z^k}{k!}\prod_{j=0}^{k-1}\frac{(x_1+j)\cdots(x_{n}+j)}{(y_1+j)\cdots(y_{n-1}+j)} $$ and $Γ_p$ denotes the $p$-adic gamma function. This confirms a conjecture of Deines, Fuselier, Long, Swisher and Tu. Furthermore, under the same assumptions, we also prove that $$p^n\cdot {}_{n+1} F_n \bigg[ \begin{matrix} 1 &1 &\ldots &1\\ &\frac{n+1}{n} &\ldots &\frac{n+1}{n} \end{matrix}\bigg | \, 1\bigg]_{p-1} \equiv -Γ_p \Bigl(\frac{1}{n} \Bigr)^n \quad(\mathrm{mod}\ {p^3}),$$ which solves another conjecture of Deines, Fuselier, Long, Swisher and Tu.
