Counting subgroups of fixed order in finite abelian groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
We use recurrence relations to derive explicit formulas for counting the number of subgroups of given order (or index) in rank 3 finite abelian p-groups and use these to derive similar formulas in few cases for rank 4. As a consequence, we answer some questions by M. T$\ddot{a}$rn$\ddot{a}$uceanu in \cite{MT} and L. T$\dot{\acute{o}}$th in \cite{LT}. We also use other methods such as the method of fundamental group lattices introduced in \cite{MT} to derive a similar counting function in a special case of arbitrary rank finite abelian p-groups.

Polynomials from combinatorial $K$-theory
Published in Can. J. Math.-J. Can. Math. 73 (2021) 29-62 • View Publication • BIB
We introduce two new bases of the ring of polynomials and study their relations to known bases. The first basis is the quasiLascoux basis, which is simultaneously both a $K$-theoretic deformation of the quasikey basis and also a lift of the $K$-analogue of the quasiSchur basis from quasisymmetric polynomials to general polynomials. We give positive expansions of this quasiLascoux basis into the glide and Lascoux atom bases, as well as a positive expansion of the Lascoux basis into the quasiLascoux basis. As a special case, these expansions give the first proof that the $K$-analogues of quasiSchur polynomials expand positively in multifundamental quasisymmetric polynomials of T. Lam and P. Pylyavskyy. The second new basis is the kaon basis, a $K$-theoretic deformation of the fundamental particle basis. We give positive expansions of the glide and Lascoux atom bases into this kaon basis. Throughout, we explore how the relationships among these $K$-analogues mirror the relationships among their cohomological counterparts. We make several 'alternating sum' conjectures that are suggestive of Euler characteristic calculations.

The $f$- and $h$-vectors of Interval Subdivisions
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 169, (2020), 105 -124 • View Publication • BIB
The interval subdivision Int$(Δ)$ of a simplicial complex $Δ$ was introduced by Walker. We give the complete combinatorial description of the entries of the transformation matrices from the $f$- and $h$-vectors of $Δ$ to the $f$- and $h$-vectors of Int$(Δ)$. We show that if $Δ$ has non-negative $h$-vector then the $h$-polynomial of its interval subdivision has only real roots. As a consequence, we prove the Charney-Davis conjecture for Int$(Δ)$, if $Δ$ has non-negative reciprocal $h$-vector.
A $4$-choosable graph that is not $(8:2)$-choosable
Published in Advances in Combinatorics, 2019:5 • View Publication • BIB
In 1980, Erdős, Rubin and Taylor asked whether for all positive integers $a$, $b$, and $m$, every $(a:b)$-choosable graph is also $(am:bm)$-choosable. We provide a negative answer by exhibiting a $4$-choosable graph that is not $(8:2)$-choosable.

On solid density of Cayley digraphs on finite Abelian groups
Let $Γ=$Cay$(G,T)$ be a Cayley digraph over a finite Abelian group $G$ with respect the generating set $T\not\ni0$. $Γ$ has order ord$(Γ)=|G|=n$ and degree deg$(Γ)=|T|=d$. Let $k(Γ)$ be the diameter of $Γ$ and denote $κ(d,n)=\min\{k(Γ):~\textrm{ord}(Γ)=n,\textrm{deg}(Γ)=d\}$. We give a closed expression, $\ell(d,n)$, of a tight lower bound of $κ(d,n)$ by using the so called {\em solid density} introduced by Fiduccia, Forcade and Zito. A digraph $Γ$ of degree $d$ is called {\em tight} when $k(Γ)=κ(d,|Γ|)=\ell(d,|Γ|)$ holds. Recently, the {\em Dilating Method} has been developed to derive a sequence of digraphs of constant solid density. In this work, we use this method to derive a sequence of tight digraphs $\{Γ_i\}_{i=1}^{\textrm{c}(Γ)}$ from a given tight digraph $Γ$. Moreover, we find a closed expression of the cardinality c$(Γ)$ of this sequence. It is perhaps surprising that c$(Γ)$ depends only on $n$ and $d$ and not on the structure of $Γ$.
Coloring Delaunay-Edges and their Generalizations
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider geometric hypergraphs whose vertex set is a finite set of points (e.g., in the plane), and whose hyperedges are the intersections of this set with a family of geometric regions (e.g., axis-parallel rectangles). A typical coloring problem for such geometric hypergraphs asks, given an integer $k$, for the existence of an integer $m=m(k)$, such that every set of points can be $k$-colored such that every hyperedge of size at least $m$ contains points of different (or all $k$) colors. We generalize this notion by introducing coloring of \emph{$t$-subsets} of points such that every hyperedge that contains enough points contains $t$-subsets of different (or all) colors. In particular, we consider all $t$-subsets and $t$-subsets that are themselves hyperedges. The latter, with $t=2$, is equivalent to coloring the edges of the so-called \emph{Delaunay-graph}. In this paper we study colorings of Delaunay-edges with respect to halfplanes, pseudo-disks, axis-parallel and bottomless rectangles, and also discuss colorings of $t$-subsets of geometric and abstract hypergraphs, and connections between the standard coloring of vertices and coloring of $t$-subsets of vertices.

The topological trees with extreme Matula numbers
Denote by $p_m$ the $m$-th prime number ($p_1=2,~p_2=3,~p_3=5,~ p_4=7,~\ldots$). Let $T$ be a rooted tree with branches $T_1,T_2,\ldots,T_r$. The Matula number $M(T)$ of $T$ is $p_{M(T_1)}\cdot p_{M(T_2)}\cdot \ldots \cdot p_{M(T_r)}$, starting with $M(K_1)=1$. This number was put forward half a century ago by the American mathematician David Matula. In this paper, we prove that the star (consisting of a root and leaves attached to it) and the binary caterpillar (a binary tree whose internal vertices form a path starting at the root) have the smallest and greatest Matula number, respectively, over all topological trees (rooted trees without vertices of outdegree $1$) with a prescribed number of leaves -- the extreme values are also derived.
Ubiquity in graphs I: Topological ubiquity of trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\triangleleft$ be a relation between graphs. We say a graph $G$ is \emph{$\triangleleft$-ubiquitous} if whenever $Γ$ is a graph with $nG \triangleleft Γ$ for all $n \in \mathbb{N}$, then one also has $\aleph_0 G \triangleleft Γ$, where $αG$ is the disjoint union of $α$ many copies of $G$. The \emph{Ubiquity Conjecture} of Andreae, a well-known open problem in the theory of infinite graphs, asserts that every locally finite connected graph is ubiquitous with respect to the minor relation. In this paper, which is the first of a series of papers making progress towards the Ubiquity Conjecture, we show that all trees are ubiquitous with respect to the topological minor relation, irrespective of their cardinality. This answers a question of Andreae from 1979.

Shuffle-compatible permutation statistics II: the exterior peak set
Published in published, with editorial changes, in: Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 25 (2018), Paper #P4.17 • View Publication • BIB
This is a continuation of arXiv:1706.00750 by Gessel and Zhuang (but can be read independently from the latter). We study the shuffle-compatibility of permutation statistics -- a concept introduced in arXiv:1706.00750, although various instances of it have appeared throughout the literature before. We prove that (as Gessel and Zhuang have conjectured) the exterior peak set statistic (Epk) is shuffle-compatible. We furthermore introduce the concept of an "LR-shuffle-compatible" statistic, which is stronger than shuffle-compatibility. We prove that Epk and a few other statistics are LR-shuffle-compatible. Furthermore, we connect these concepts with the quasisymmetric functions, in particular the dendriform structure on them.

A closed formula for the generating function of $p$-Bernoulli numbers: An elementary proof
For a two parameter family of Bernoulli numbers $B_{n, p}$ the exponential generating function is derived by elementary methods.
The structure of binary matroids with no induced claw or Fano plane restriction
Published • View Publication • BIB
An 'induced restriction' of a simple binary matroid $M$ is a restriction $M|F$, where $F$ is a flat of $M$. We consider the class $\mathcal{M}$ of all simple binary matroids $M$ containing neither a free matroid on three elements (which we call a 'claw'), nor a Fano plane as an induced restriction. We give an exact structure theorem for this class; two of its consequences are that the matroids in $\mathcal{M}$ have unbounded critical number, while the matroids in $\mathcal{M}$ not containing the clique $M(K_5)$ as an induced restriction have critical number at most $2$.

Aligned plane drawings of the generalized Delaunay-graphs for pseudo-disks
Published in Journal of Computational Geometry 11(1) (2020), 354-370 • Search Publication
We study general Delaunay-graphs, which are natural generalizations of Delaunay triangulations to arbitrary families, in particular to pseudo-disks. We prove that for any finite pseudo-disk family and point set, there is a plane drawing of their Delaunay-graph such that every edge lies inside every pseudo-disk that contains its endpoints.

Bounding the number of non-duplicates of the $q$-side in simple drawings of $K_{p,q}$
Published • View Publication • BIB
The number $Z(n):=\lfloor n/2\rfloor\lfloor (n-1)/2\rfloor$ is the smallest number of crossings in a simple planar drawing of $K_{2,n}$ in which both vertices on the 2-side have the same clockwise rotation. For two vertices $u,v$ on the $q$-side of a simple drawing of $K_{p,q}$, let $\operatorname{cr}_D(u,v)$ denote the total number of crossings that edges incident with $u$ have with edges incident with $v$. We show that in any simple drawing $D$ of $K_{p,q}$ in a surface $Σ$ the number of pairs of vertices on the $q$-side of $K_{p,q}$ having $\operatorname{cr}_D(u,v)<Z(p)$ is bounded as a function of $p$ and $Σ$. As a consequence, we also show that, for a fixed integer $p$ and surface $Σ$, there exists a finite set of drawings $\mathcal{D}(p,Σ)$ of complete bipartite graphs such that, for each $q$, a crossing-minimal drawing of $K_{p,q}$ can be obtained by "duplicating vertices" in some drawing from $\mathcal D(p,Σ)$.

A General Incidence Bound in ${\mathbb R}^d$ and Related Problems
We derive a general upper bound for the number of incidences with $k$-dimensional varieties in ${\mathbb R}^d$. The leading term of this new bound generalizes previous bounds for the special cases of $k=1, k=d-1,$ and $k= d/2$, to every $1\le k <d$. We derive lower bounds showing that this leading term is tight in various cases. We derive a bound for incidences with transverse varieties, generalizing a result of Solymosi and Tao. Finally, we derive a bound for incidences with hyperplanes in ${\mathbb C}^d$, which is also tight in some cases. (In both ${\mathbb R}^d$ and ${\mathbb C}^d$, the bounds are tight up to sub-polynomial factors.) To prove our incidence bounds, we define the \emph{dimension ratio} of an incidence problem. This ratio provides an intuitive approach for deriving incidence bounds and isolating the main difficulties in each proof. We rely on the dimension ratio both in ${\mathbb R}^d$ and in ${\mathbb C}^d$, and also in some of our lower bounds.
Configurations representing a skew perspective
A combinatorial object representing schemas of, possibly skew, perspectives, called {\em a configuration of skew perspective} is defined. Some classifications of skew perspectives are presented.
On a class of $(15_4 \, 20_3)$-configurations reflecting abstract properties of a perspective between tetrahedrons
In the paper we give a complete classification of schemes of abstract perspectives between two tetrahedrons such that intersecting edges corespond under this perspective to intersecting edges.
On the diameter and incidence energy of iterated total graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The total graph of $G$, $\mathcal T(G)$ is the graph whose set of vertices is the union of the sets of vertices and edges of $G$, where two vertices are adjacent if and only if they stand for either incident or adjacent elements in $G$. Let $\mathcal{T}^1(G)=\mathcal{T}(G)$, the total graph of $G$. For $k\geq2$, the $k\text{-}th$ iterated total graph of $G$, $\mathcal{T}^k(G)$, is defined recursively as $\mathcal{T}^k(G)=\mathcal{T}(\mathcal{T}^{k-1}(G)).$ If $G$ is a connected graph its diameter is the maximum distance between any pair of vertices in $G$. The incidence energy $IE(G)$ of $G$ is the sum of the singular values of the incidence matrix of $G$. In this paper for a given integer $k$ we establish a necessary and sufficient condition under which $diam(\mathcal{T}^{r+1}(G))>k-r,$ $r\geq0$. In addition, bounds for the incidence energy of the iterated graph $\mathcal{T}^{r+1}(G)$ are obtained, provided $G$ to be a regular graph. Finally, new families of non-isomorphic cospectral graphs are exhibited.

Hibi algebras and representation theory
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper gives a survey on the relation between Hibi algebras and representation theory. The notion of Hodge algebras or algebras with straightening laws has been proved to be very useful to describe the structure of many important algebras in classical invariant theory and representation theory. In particular, a special type of such algebras introduced by Hibi provides a nice bridge between combinatorics and representation theory of classical groups. We will examine certain poset structures of Young tableaux and affine monoids, Hibi algebras in toric degenerations of flag varieties, and their relations to polynomial representations of the complex general linear group.

On uniformity of $q$-multiplicative sequences
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that any $q$-multiplicative sequence which is \emph{oscillating} of order $1$, i.e.\ does not correlate with linear phase functions $e^{2πi nα}$ ($α\in \mathbb{R})$, is Gowers uniform of all orders, and hence in particular does not correlate with polynomial phase functions $e^{2πi p(n)}$ ($p \in \mathbb{R}[x]$). Quantitatively, we show that any $q$-multiplicative sequence which is of Gelfond type of order 1 is automatically of Gelfond type of all orders. Consequently, any such $q$-multiplicative sequence is a good weight for ergodic theorems. We also obtain combinatorial corollaries concerning linear patterns in sets which are described in terms of sums of digits.
