Bounds and algorithms for graph trusses
Published in Journal of Graph Algorithms and Applications, 24(3):191-214, 2020 • View Publication • BIB
The $k$-truss, introduced by Cohen (2005), is a graph where every edge is incident to at least $k$ triangles. This is a relaxation of the clique. It has proved to be a useful tool in identifying cohesive subnetworks in a variety of real-world graphs. Despite its simplicity and its utility, the combinatorial and algorithmic aspects of trusses have not been thoroughly explored. We provide nearly-tight bounds on the edge counts of $k$-trusses. We also give two improved algorithms for finding trusses in large-scale graphs. First, we present a simplified and faster algorithm, based on approach discussed in Wang & Cheng (2012). Second, we present a theoretical algorithm based on fast matrix multiplication; this converts a triangle-generation algorithm of Bjorklund et al. (2014) into a dynamic data structure.

Burning the plane: densities of the infinite Cartesian grid
Published • View Publication • BIB
Graph burning is a discrete-time process on graphs, where vertices are sequentially burned, and burned vertices cause their neighbours to burn over time. We consider extremal properties of this process in the new setting where the underlying graph is also changing at each time-step. The main focus is on the possible densities of burning vertices when the sequence of underlying graphs are growing grids in the Cartesian plane, centred at the origin. If the grids are of height and width $2cn+1$ at time $n$, then all values in $\left [ \frac{1}{2c^2} , 1 \right ]$ are possible densities for the burned set. For faster growing grids, we show that there is a threshold behaviour: if the size of the grids at time $n$ is $ω(n^{3/2})$, then the density of burned vertices is always $0$, while if the grid sizes are $Θ(n^{3/2})$, then positive densities are possible. Some extensions to lattices of arbitrary but fixed dimension are also considered.
Ansatz for $(-1)^{n-1}\nabla p_n$
We construct a special family of equivariant coherent sheaves on the Hilbert scheme on $n$-points in the affine plane. The equivariant Euler characteristic of these sheaves are closely related to the symmetic functions $(-1)^{n-1} \nabla p_n$. We prove a higher cohomology vanishing result of these sheaves. It follows from the Bridgeland-King-Reid correspondence that there is an effective $S_n$ module underlying the aforementioned family of symmetric functions.
Ramanujan graphs in cryptography
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we study the security of a proposal for Post-Quantum Cryptography from both a number theoretic and cryptographic perspective. Charles-Goren-Lauter in 2006 [CGL06] proposed two hash functions based on the hardness of finding paths in Ramanujan graphs. One is based on Lubotzky-Phillips-Sarnak (LPS) graphs and the other one is based on Supersingular Isogeny Graphs. A 2008 paper by Petit-Lauter-Quisquater breaks the hash function based on LPS graphs. On the Supersingular Isogeny Graphs proposal, recent work has continued to build cryptographic applications on the hardness of finding isogenies between supersingular elliptic curves. A 2011 paper by De Feo-Jao-Plût proposed a cryptographic system based on Supersingular Isogeny Diffie-Hellman as well as a set of five hard problems. In this paper we show that the security of the SIDH proposal relies on the hardness of the SIG path-finding problem introduced in [CGL06]. In addition, similarities between the number theoretic ingredients in the LPS and Pizer constructions suggest that the hardness of the path-finding problem in the two graphs may be linked. By viewing both graphs from a number theoretic perspective, we identify the similarities and differences between the Pizer and LPS graphs.

A Sauer-Shelah-Perles Lemma for Sumsets
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that any family of subsets $A\subseteq 2^{[n]}$ satisfies $\lvert A\rvert \leq O\bigl(n^{\lceil{d}/{2}\rceil}\bigr)$, where $d$ is the VC dimension of $\{S\triangle T \,\vert\, S,T\in A\}$, and $\triangle$ is the symmetric difference operator. We also observe that replacing $\triangle$ by either $\cup$ or $\cap$ fails to satisfy an analogous statement. Our proof is based on the polynomial method; specifically, on an argument due to [Croot, Lev, Pach '17].

The number of distinct adjacent pairs in geometrically distributed words
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 22 no. 4, Analysis of Algorithms (January 28, 2021) dmtcs:5686 • View Publication • BIB
A sequence of geometric random variables of length $n$ is a sequence of $n$ independent and identically distributed geometric random variables ($Γ_1, Γ_2, \dots, Γ_n$) where $\mathbb{P}(Γ_j=i)=pq^{i-1}$ for $1~\leq~j~\leq~n$ with $p+q=1.$ We study the number of distinct adjacent two letter patterns in such sequences. Initially we directly count the number of distinct pairs in words of short length. Because of the rapid growth of the number of word patterns we change our approach to this problem by obtaining an expression for the expected number of distinct pairs in words of length $n$. We also obtain the asymptotics for the expected number as $n \to \infty$.
Hedetniemi's conjecture from the topological viewpoint
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper is devoted to studying a topological version of the famous Hedetniemi conjecture which says: The $\mathbb Z/2$-index of the Cartesian product of two $\mathbb Z/2$-spaces is equal to the minimum of their $\mathbb Z/2$-indexes. We fully confirm the version of this conjecture for the homological index via establishing a stronger formula for the homological index of the join of $\mathbb Z/2$-spaces. Moreover, we confirm the original conjecture for the case when one of the factors is an $n$-sphere. Analogous results for $\mathbb Z/p$-spaces are presented as well. In addition, we answer a question about computing the index of some non-trivial products, raised by Marcin Wrochna. Finally, some new topological lower bounds for the chromatic number of the Categorical product of (hyper-)graphs are presented.

On the rank of a random binary matrix
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the rank of the random $n\times m$ 0/1 matrix ${\bf A}_{n,m;k}$ where each column is chosen independently from the set $Ω_{n,k}$ of 0/1 vectors with exactly $k$ 1's. Here 0/1 are the elements of the field $GF_2$. We obtain an asymptotically correct estimate for the rank in terms of $c,n,k$, assuming that $m=cn$. In addition, we assign i.i.d. $U[0,1]$ weights $X_{\bf c},{\bf c}\inΩ_{n,k}$ and let the weight of a set of columns $C$ be $X(C)=\sum_{{\bf c}\in C}X_{\bf c}$. Let a basis be a set of $n-1_{k\text{even}}$ linearly independent columns. We obtain an asymptotically correct estimate for the minimum weight of a basis. This generalises the well-known result for $k=2$ viz. that the expected length of a minimum weight spanning tree tends to $ζ(3)$.

Rado's criterion over squares and higher powers
Published • View Publication • BIB
We establish partition regularity of the generalised Pythagorean equation in five or more variables. Furthermore, we show how Rado's characterisation of a partition regular equation remains valid over the set of positive $k$th powers, provided the equation has at least $(1+o(1))k\log k$ variables. We thus completely describe which diagonal forms are partition regular and which are not, given sufficiently many variables. In addition, we prove a supersaturated version of Rado's theorem for a linear equation restricted either to squares minus one or to logarithmically-smooth numbers.

Tilings, packings and expected Betti numbers in simplicial complexes
Let $K$ be a finite simplicial complex. We prove that the normalized expected Betti numbers of a random subcomplex in its $d$-th barycentric subdivision $\text{Sd}^d (K)$ converge to universal limits as $d$ grows to $+ \infty$. In codimension one, we use canonical filtrations of $\text{Sd}^d (K)$ to upper estimate these limits and get a monotony theorem which makes it possible to improve these estimates given any packing of disjoint simplices in $\text{Sd}^d (K)$. We then introduce a notion of tiling of simplicial complexes having the property that skeletons and barycentric subdivisions of tileable simplicial complexes are tileable. This enables us to tackle the problem: How many disjoint simplices can be packed in $\text{Sd}^d (K)$, $d \gg 0$?

A combinatorial approach to scattering diagrams
Published • View Publication • BIB
Scattering diagrams arose in the context of mirror symmetry, but a special class of scattering diagrams (the cluster scattering diagrams) were recently developed to prove key structural results on cluster algebras. We use the connection to cluster algebras to calculate the function attached to the limiting wall of a rank-2 cluster scattering diagram of affine type. In the skew-symmetric rank-2 affine case, this recovers a formula due to Reineke. In the same case, we show that the generating function for signed Narayana numbers appears in a role analogous to a cluster variable. In acyclic finite type, we construct cluster scattering diagrams of acyclic finite type from Cambrian fans and sortable elements, with a simple direct proof.

Stability and complexity of mixed discriminants
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that the mixed discriminant of $n$ positive semidefinite $n \times n$ real symmetric matrices can be approximated within a relative error $ε>0$ in quasi-polynomial $n^{O(\ln n -\ln ε)}$ time, provided the distance of each matrix to the identity matrix in the operator norm does not exceed some absolute constant $γ_0 >0$. We deduce a similar result for the mixed discriminant of doubly stochastic $n$-tuples of matrices from the Marcus - Spielman - Srivastava bound on the roots of the mixed characteristic polynomial. Finally, we construct a quasi-polynomial algorithm for approximating the sum of $m$-th powers of principal minors of a matrix, provided the operator norm of the matrix is strictly less than 1. As is shown by Gurvits, for $m=2$ the problem is $\#P$-hard and covers the problem of computing the mixed discriminant of positive semidefinite matrices of rank 2.

Long monochromatic paths and cycles in 2-colored bipartite graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Gyárfás and Lehel and independently Faudree and Schelp proved that in any 2-coloring of the edges of $K_{n,n}$ there exists a monochromatic path on at least $2\lceil n/2\rceil$ vertices, and this is tight. We prove a stability version of this result which holds even if the host graph is not complete; that is, if $G$ is a balanced bipartite graph on $2n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $(3/4+o(1))n$, then in every 2-coloring of the edges of $G$, either there exists a monochromatic cycle on at least $(1+o(1))n$ vertices, or the coloring of $G$ is close to an extremal coloring -- in which case $G$ has a monochromatic path on at least $2\lceil n/2\rceil$ vertices and a monochromatic cycle on at least $2\lfloor n/2\rfloor$ vertices. Furthermore, we determine an asymptotically tight bound on the length of a longest monochromatic cycle in a 2-colored balanced bipartite graph on $2n$ vertices with minimum degree $δn$ for all $0\leq δ\leq 1$.

Leading Coefficients and the Multiplicity of Known Roots
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that a monic univariate polynomial over a field of characteristic zero, with $k$ distinct non-zero known roots, is determined by its $k$ proper leading coefficients by providing an explicit algorithm for computing the multiplicities of each root. We provide a version of the result and accompanying algorithm when the field is not algebraically closed by considering the minimal polynomials of the roots. Furthermore, we show how to perform the aforementioned algorithm in a numerically stable manner over $\mathbb{C}$, and then apply it to obtain new characteristic polynomials of hypergraphs.

The $e$-vector of a simplicial complex
We study the exponential Hilbert series (both coarsely- and finely-graded) of the Stanley-Reisner ring of an abstract simplicial complex, $Δ$, and we introduce the $e$-vector of $Δ$, which relates to the coefficients of the exponential Hilbert series. We explore the relationship of the $e$-vector with the classical $f$-vector and $h$-vector of $Δ$ while simultaneously investigating the geometric information that the $e$-vector encodes about $Δ$. We then prove a simple combinatorial identity for the $e$-vector in the case where $Δ$ is an Eulerian manifold.

Reduced words for clans
Clans are combinatorial objects indexing the orbits of $GL(\mathbb{C}^p) \times GL(\mathbb{C}^q)$ on the variety of flags in $\mathbb{C}^{p+q}$. This geometry leads to a partial order on the set of clans analogous to weak Bruhat order on the symmetric group, and we study the saturated chains in this order. We prove an analogue of the Matsumoto-Tits theorem on reduced words in a Coxeter group. We also obtain enumerations of reduced word sets for particular clans in terms of standard tableaux and shifted standard tableaux.
Large monochromatic components in multicolored bipartite graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
It is well-known that in every $r$-coloring of the edges of the complete bipartite graph $K_{m,n}$ there is a monochromatic connected component with at least ${m+n\over r}$ vertices. In this paper we study an extension of this problem by replacing complete bipartite graphs by bipartite graphs of large minimum degree. We conjecture that in every $r$-coloring of the edges of an $(X,Y)$-bipartite graph with $|X|=m$, $|Y|=n$, $δ(X,Y) > \left( 1 - \frac{1}{r+1}\right) n$ and $δ(Y,X) > \left( 1 - \frac{1}{r+1}\right) m$, there exists a monochromatic component on at least $\frac{m+n}{r}$ vertices (as in the complete bipartite graph). If true, the minimum degree condition is sharp (in that both inequalities cannot be made weak when $m$ and $n$ are divisible by $r+1$). We prove the conjecture for $r=2$ and we prove a weaker bound for all $r\geq 3$. As a corollary, we obtain a result about the existence of monochromatic components with at least $\frac{n}{r-1}$ vertices in $r$-colored graphs with large minimum degree.
