Detour-saturated graphs of small girths
A detour of a graph G is a longest path in G. The detour order of G is the number of vertices in a detour of G. A graph is said to be detour-saturated if the addition of any edge increases strictly the detour order. L.W. Beineke, J.E. Dunbar and M. Frick asked the following three questions in 2005. (1) What is the smallest order of a detour-saturated graph of girth 4? (2) Let Pr be the graph obtained from the Petersen graph by splitting one of its vertices into three leaves. Is Pr the smallest triangle-free detour-saturated graph? (3) Does there exist a detour-saturated graph with finite girth bigger than 5? We answer these questions.

The graphs with all but two eigenvalues equal to $2$ or $-1$
In this paper, all graphs whose adjacency matrix has at most two eigenvalues (multiplicities included) different from $2$ and $-1$ are determined. These graphs conclude a class of generalized friendship graphs $F_{t,r,k}, $ which is the graph of $k$ copies of the complete graph $K_t$ meeting in common $r$ vertices such that $t-r=3.$ Which of these graphs are determined by its spectrum is are also obtained.

A generalized Turán problem in random graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the following generalization of the Turán problem in sparse random graphs. Given graphs $T$ and $H$, let $\mathrm{ex}\big(G(n,p), T, H\big)$ be the random variable that counts the largest number of copies of $T$ in a subgraph of $G(n,p)$ that does not contain $H$. We study the threshold phenomena arising in the evolution of the typical value of this random variable, for every $H$ and an arbitrary $2$-balanced $T$. Our results in the case when $m_2(H) > m_2(T)$ are a natural generalization of the Erdős--Stone theorem for $G(n,p)$, which was proved several years ago by Conlon and Gowers and by Schacht; the case $T = K_m$ has been recently resolved by Alon, Kostochka, and Shikhelman. More interestingly, the case when $m_2(H) \le m_2(T)$ exhibits a more complex and subtle behavior. Namely, the location(s) of the (possibly multiple) threshold(s) are determined by densities of various coverings of $H$ with copies of $T$ and the typical value(s) of $\mathrm{ex}\big(G(n,p), T, H\big)$ are given by solutions to deterministic hypergraph Turán-type problems that we are unable to solve in full generality.

Critical Ising model on random triangulations of the disk: enumeration and local limits
Published in Commun. Math. Phys., 374(3):1577-1643, 2020 • View Publication • BIB
We consider Boltzmann random triangulations coupled to the Ising model on their faces, under Dobrushin boundary conditions and at the critical point of the model. The first part of this paper computes explicitly the partition function of this model by solving its Tutte's equation, extending a previous result by Bernardi and Bousquet-Mélou to the model with Dobrushin boundary conditions. We show that the perimeter exponent of the model is 7/3 in contrast to the exponent 5/2 for uniform triangulations. In the second part, we show that the model has a local limit in distribution when the two components of the Dobrushin boundary tend to infinity one after the other. The local limit is constructed explicitly using the peeling process along an Ising interface. Moreover, we show that the main interface in the local limit touches the (infinite) boundary almost surely only finitely many times, a behavior opposite to that of the Bernoulli percolation on uniform maps. Some scaling limits closely related to the perimeters of finite clusters are also obtained.
The Algebraic Connectivity of a Graph and its Complement
Published in Linear Algebra Appl. (2018) • View Publication • BIB
For a graph $G$, let $λ_2(G)$ denote its second smallest Laplacian eigenvalue. It was conjectured that $λ_2(G) + λ_2(\overline G) \ge 1$, where $\overline G$ is the complement of $G$. In this paper, it is shown that $\max\{λ_2(G), λ_2(\overline G)\} \ge 2/5$.

Exponents of primitive symmetric companion matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
A {\it symmetric companion matrix} is a matrix of the form $A +A^T$ where $A$ is a companion matrix all of whose entries are in $\{0,1\}$ and $A^T$ is the transpose of $A.$ In this paper, we find the total number of primitive and the total number of imprimitive symmetric companion matrices. We establish formulas to compute the exponent of every primitive symmetric companion matrix. Hence the exponent set for the class of primitive symmetric companion matrices is completely characterized. We also obtain the number of primitive symmetric companion matrices with a given exponent for certain cases.

Cyclic triangle factors in regular tournaments
Published • View Publication • BIB
Both Cuckler and Yuster independently conjectured that when $n$ is an odd positive multiple of $3$ every regular tournament on $n$ vertices contains a collection of $n/3$ vertex-disjoint copies of the cyclic triangle. Soon after, Keevash and Sudakov proved that if $G$ is an orientation of a graph on $n$ vertices in which every vertex has both indegree and outdegree at least $(1/2 - o(1))n$, then there exists a collection of vertex-disjoint cyclic triangles that covers all but at most $3$ vertices. In this paper, we resolve the conjecture of Cuckler and Yuster for sufficiently large $n$.

Lengths of paths in rooted trees
We provide formulas for generating functions of many types of paths in various rooted tree structures. We compute the $k$th moment of the generating functions for various types of vertical paths. In two specific familes of trees we find exact closed formulas for expectations and their asymptotic values. Some of these closed formulas are surprisingly simple.

The domination number of plane triangulations
We introduce a class of plane graphs called weak near-triangulations, and prove that this class is closed under certain graph operations. Then we use the properties of weak near-triangulations to prove that every plane triangulation on $n>6$ vertices has a dominating set of size at most $17n/53$. This improves the bound $n/3$ obtained by Matheson and Tarjan.
Proportional Choosability: A New List Analogue of Equitable Coloring
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 2003, Kostochka, Pelsmajer, and West introduced a list analogue of equitable coloring called equitable choosability. In this paper, we motivate and define a new list analogue of equitable coloring called proportional choosability. A $k$-assignment $L$ for a graph $G$ specifies a list $L(v)$ of $k$ available colors for each vertex $v$ of $G$. An $L$-coloring assigns a color to each vertex $v$ from its list $L(v)$. For each color $c$, let $η(c)$ be the number of vertices $v$ whose list $L(v)$ contains $c$. A proportional $L$-coloring of $G$ is a proper $L$-coloring in which each color $c \in \bigcup_{v \in V(G)} L(v)$ is used $\lfloor η(c)/k \rfloor$ or $\lceil η(c)/k \rceil$ times. A graph $G$ is proportionally $k$-choosable if a proportional $L$-coloring of $G$ exists whenever $L$ is a $k$-assignment for $G$. We show that if a graph $G$ is proportionally $k$-choosable, then every subgraph of $G$ is also proportionally $k$-choosable and also $G$ is proportionally $(k+1)$-choosable, unlike equitable choosability for which analogous claims would be false. We also show that any graph $G$ is proportionally $k$-choosable whenever $k \geq Δ(G) + \lceil |V(G)|/2 \rceil$, and we use matching theory to completely characterize the proportional choosability of stars and the disjoint union of cliques.

On the Pieri rules of stable and dual stable Grothendieck polynomials
We give an explanation for the Pieri coefficients for the stable and dual stable Grothendieck polynomials; their non-leading terms are obtained by taking an alternating sum of meets (or joins) of their leading terms.

Elements of Finite Order in the Riordan Group and Their Eigenvectors
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider elements of finite order in the Riordan group $\cal R$ over a field of characteristic $0$. Viewing $\cal R$ as a semi-direct product of groups of formal power series, we solve, for all $n \geq 2$, two foundational questions posed by L. Shapiro for the case $n = 2$ (`involutions'): Given a formal power series $F(x)$ of finite compositional order and an integer $n\geq 2$, Theorem 1 states, exactly which $g(x)$ make $\big(g(x), F(x)\big)$ a Riordan element of order $n$. Theorem 2 classifies finite-order Riordan group elements up to conjugation in $\cal R$. Viewing $\cal R$ as a group of infinite lower triangular matrices, we interpret Theorem 1 in terms of existence of eigenvectors and Theorem 2 as a normal form for finite order Riordan arrays under similarity. These lead to Theorem 3, a formula for all eigenvectors of finite order Riordan arrays; and we show how this can lead to interesting combinatorial identities. We then relate our work to papers of Cheon and Kim which motivated this paper and we solve the Open question which they posed. Finally, this circle of ideas gives a new proof of C. Marshall's theorem, which finds the unique $F(x)$, given bi-invertible $g(x)$, such that $\big(g(x), F(x))$ is an involution.

The component structure of dense random subgraphs of the hypercube
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given $p \in (0,1)$, we let $Q_p= Q_p^d$ be the random subgraph of the $d$-dimensional hypercube $Q^d$ where edges are present independently with probability $p$. It is well known that, as $d \rightarrow \infty$, if $p>\frac12$ then with high probability $Q_p$ is connected; and if $p<\frac12$ then with high probability $Q_p$ consists of one giant component together with many smaller components which form the `fragment'. Here we fix $p \in (0,\frac12)$, and investigate the fragment, and how it sits inside the hypercube. In particular we give asymptotic estimates for the mean numbers of components in the fragment of each size, and describe their asymptotic distributions and indeed their joint distribution, much extending earlier work of Weber.

Combinatorial manifolds are Hamiltonian
Extending a theorem of Whitney of 1931 we prove that all connected d-graphs are Hamiltonian for positive d. A d-graph is a type of combinatorial manifold which is inductively defined as a finite simple graph for which every unit sphere is a (d-1)-sphere. A d-sphere is d-graph such that removing one vertex renders the graph contractible. A graph is contractible if there exists a vertex for which the unit sphere and the graph without that vertex are both contractible. These inductive definitions are primed with the assumptions that the empty graph 0 is the (-1)-sphere and that the one-point graph 1 is the smallest contractible graph. The proof is constructive and shows that unlike for general graphs, the complexity of the construction of Hamiltonian cycles in d-graphs is polynomial in the number of vertices of the graph.
Conway-Coxeter friezes and mutation: a survey
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this survey article we explain the intricate links between Conway-Coxeter friezes and cluster combinatorics. More precisely, we provide a formula, relying solely on the shape of the frieze, describing how each individual entry in the frieze changes under cluster mutation. Moreover, we provide a combinatorial formula for the number of submodules of a string module, and with that a simple way to compute the frieze associated to a fixed cluster tilting object in a cluster category of Dynkin type $A$ in the sense of Caldero and Chapoton.

A Proof of Delta Conjecture
By finding orthogonal representation for a family of simple connected called $δ$-graphs it is possible to show that $δ$-graphs satisfy delta conjecture. An extension of the argument to graphs of the form $\overline{P_{Δ(G)+2}\sqcup G}$ where $P_{Δ(G)+2}$ is a path and $G$ is a simple connected graph it is possible to find an orthogonal representation of $\overline{P_{Δ(G)+2}\sqcup G}$ in $\mathbb{R}^{Δ(G)+1}$. As a consequence we prove delta conjecture.

Characterization of cycle obstruction sets for improper coloring planar graphs
Published in SIAM J. Discrete Math., 32(2018), no. 2, pp. 1209-1228 • View Publication • BIB
For nonnegative integers $k, d_1, \ldots, d_k$, a graph is $(d_1, \ldots, d_k)$-colorable if its vertex set can be partitioned into $k$ parts so that the $i$th part induces a graph with maximum degree at most $d_i$ for all $i\in\{1, \ldots, k\}$. A class $\mathcal C$ of graphs is {\it balanced $k$-partitionable} and {\it unbalanced $k$-partitionable} if there exists a nonnegative integer $D$ such that all graphs in $\mathcal C$ are $(D, \ldots, D)$-colorable and $(0, \ldots, 0, D)$-colorable, respectively, where the tuple has length $k$. A set $X$ of cycles is a {\it cycle obstruction set} of a class $\mathcal C$ of planar graphs if every planar graph containing none of the cycles in $X$ as a subgraph belongs to $\mathcal C$. This paper characterizes all cycle obstruction sets of planar graphs to be balanced $k$-partitionable and unbalanced $k$-partitionable for all $k$; namely, we identify all inclusion-wise minimal cycle obstruction sets for all $k$.
Cooperative colorings of trees and of bipartite graphs
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, volume 27, issue 1, #P1.41, February 2020 • View Publication • BIB
Given a system $(G_1, \ldots ,G_m)$ of graphs on the same vertex set $V$, a cooperative coloring is a choice of vertex sets $I_1, \ldots ,I_m$, such that $I_j$ is independent in $G_j$ and $\bigcup_{j=1}^{m}I_j = V$. For a class $\mathcal{G}$ of graphs, let $m_{\mathcal{G}}(d)$ be the minimal $m$ such that every $m$ graphs from $\mathcal{G}$ with maximum degree $d$ have a cooperative coloring. We prove that $Ω(\log\log d) \le m_\mathcal{T}(d) \le O(\log d)$ and $Ω(\log d)\le m_\mathcal{B}(d) \le O(d/\log d)$, where $\mathcal{T}$ is the class of trees and $\mathcal{B}$ is the class of bipartite graphs.
