Comply/Constrain Subtraction
A comply/constrain game or a game with a Muller twist is a game where the next player is allowed to place constraints on opponent's next move. We develop a closed form formula for the Grundy value of the single-pile subtraction game where the next player may determine whether the previous player has to select a move from the set of some first k natural numbers or its complement. We also investigate the periodicity of Grundy values when the set of legal moves is from a set of finite arithmetic sequences.

Let $X_w$ be a Schubert subvariety of a cominuscule Grassmannian $X$, and let $μ:T^*X\rightarrow\mathcal N$ be the Springer map from the cotangent bundle of $X$ to the nilpotent cone $\mathcal N$. In this paper, we construct a resolution of singularities for the conormal variety $T^*_XX_w$ of $X_w$ in $X$. Further, for $X$ the usual or symplectic Grassmannian, we compute a system of equations defining $T^*_XX_w$ as a subvariety of the cotangent bundle $T^*X$ set-theoretically. This also yields a system of defining equations for the corresponding orbital varieties $μ(T^*_XX_w)$. Inspired by the system of defining equations, we conjecture a type-independent equality, namely $T^*_XX_w=π^{-1}(X_w)\capμ^{-1}(μ(T^*_XX_w))$. The set-theoretic version of this conjecture follows from this work and previous work for any cominuscule Grassmannian of type A, B, or C.

Freiman's 2.4-Theorem states that any set $A \subset \mathbb{Z}_p$ satisfying $|2A| \leq 2.4|A| - 3 $ and $|A| < p/35$ can be covered by an arithmetic progression of length at most $|2A| - |A| + 1$. A more general result of Green and Ruzsa implies that this covering property holds for any set satisfying $|2A| \leq 3|A| - 4$ as long as the rather strong density requirement $|A| < p/10^{215}$ is satisfied. We present a version of this statement that allows for sets satisfying $|2A| \leq 2.48|A| - 7$ with the more modest density requirement of $|A| < p/10^{10}$.
Tropical Geometry of Phylogenetic Tree Space: A Statistical Perspective
Phylogenetic trees are the fundamental mathematical representation of evolutionary processes in biology. They are also objects of interest in pure mathematics, such as algebraic geometry and combinatorics, due to their discrete geometry. Although they are important data structures, they face the significant challenge that sets of trees form a non-Euclidean phylogenetic tree space, which means that standard computational and statistical methods cannot be directly applied. In this work, we explore the statistical feasibility of a pure mathematical representation of the set of all phylogenetic trees based on tropical geometry for both descriptive and inferential statistics, and unsupervised and supervised machine learning. Our exploration is both theoretical and practical. We show that the tropical geometric phylogenetic tree space endowed with a generalized Hilbert projective metric exhibits analytic, geometric, and topological properties that are desirable for theoretical studies in probability and statistics and allow for well-defined questions to be posed. We illustrate the statistical feasibility of the tropical geometric perspective for phylogenetic trees with an example of both a descriptive and inferential statistical task. Moreover, this approach exhibits increased computational efficiency and statistical performance over the current state-of-the-art, which we illustrate with a real data example on seasonal influenza. Our results demonstrate the viability of the tropical geometric setting for parametric statistical and probabilistic studies of sets of phylogenetic trees.

We present a new class of binary words: the prefix normal words. They are defined by the property that for any given length $k$, no factor of length $k$ has more $a$'s than the prefix of the same length. These words arise in the context of indexing for jumbled pattern matching (a.k.a. permutation matching or Parikh vector matching), where the aim is to decide whether a string has a factor with a given multiplicity of characters, i.e., with a given Parikh vector. Using prefix normal words, we give the first non-trivial characterization of binary words having the same set of Parikh vectors of factors. We prove that the language of prefix normal words is not context-free and is strictly contained in the language of pre-necklaces, which are prefixes of powers of Lyndon words. We discuss further properties and state open problems.

Given arbitrary integers $d$ and $r$ with $d \geq 4$ and $1 \leq r \leq d + 1$, a reflexive polytope $\mathcal{P} \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ of dimension $d$ with ${\rm depth} K[\mathcal{P}] = r$ for which its dual polytope $\mathcal{P}^\vee$ is normal will be constructed, where $K[\mathcal{P}]$ is the toric ring of $\mathcal{P}$.

Quasi-shuffle algebras have been a useful tool in studying multiple zeta values and related quantities, including multiple polylogarithms, finite multiple harmonic sums, and q-multiple zeta values. Here we show that two ideas previously considered only for multiple zeta values, the interpolated product of S. Yamamoto and the symmetric sum theorem, can be generalized to any quasi-shuffle algebra.
Lagrangian subspaces, delta-matroids and four-term relations

Finite order invariants (Vassiliev invariants) of knots are expressed in terms of weight systems, that is, functions on chord diagrams satisfying the four-term relations. Weight systems have graph analogues, so-called $4$-invariants of graphs, i.e. functions on graphs that satisfy the four-term relations for graphs. Each $4$-invariant determines a weight system. The notion of weight system is naturally generalized for the case of embedded graphs with an arbitrary number of vertices. Such embedded graphs correspond to links; to each component of a link there corresponds a vertex of an embedded graph. Recently, two approaches have been suggested to extend the notion of $4$-invariants of graphs to the case of combinatorial structures corresponding to embedded graphs with an arbitrary number of vertices. The first approach is due to V.~Kleptsyn and E.~Smirnov, who considered functions on Lagrangian subspaces in a $2n$-dimensional space over $\mathbb{F}_2$ endowed with a standard symplectic form and introduced four-term relations for them. On the other hand, the second approach, the one due to Zhukov and Lando, suggests four-term relations for functions on binary delta-matroids. In this paper, we prove that the two approaches are equivalent.

The $p$-rank of a Steiner triple system $B$ is the dimension of the linear span of the set of characteristic vectors of blocks of $B$, over GF$(p)$. We derive a formula for the number of different Steiner triple systems of order $v$ and given $2$-rank $r_2$, $r_2<v$, and a formula for the number of Steiner triple systems of order $v$ and given $3$-rank $r_3$, $r_3<v-1$. Also, we prove that there are no Steiner triple systems of $2$-rank smaller than $v$ and, at the same time, $3$-rank smaller than $v-1$. Our results extend previous work on enumerating Steiner triple systems according to the rank of their codes, mainly by Tonchev, V.A.Zinoviev and D.V.Zinoviev for the binary case and by Jungnickel and Tonchev for the ternary case.

We characterize all graphs for which there are eigenvectors of the graph Laplacian having all their components in {-1,+1} or {-1,0,+ 1}. Graphs having eigenvectors with components in {-1,+1} are called bivalent and are shown to be the regular bipartite graphs and their extensions obtained by adding edges between vertices with the same value for the given eigenvector. Graphs with eigenvectors with components in {-1,0,+ 1} are called trivalent and are shown to be soft-regular graphs -graphs such that vertices associated with non-zero components have the same degree- and their extensions via some transformations.
Packing spanning partition-connected subgraphs with small degrees
Let $G$ be a graph with $X\subseteq V(G)$ and let $l$ be an intersecting supermodular subadditive integer-valued function on subsets of $V(G)$. The graph $G$ is said to be $l$-partition-connected, if for every partition $P$ of $V(G)$, $e_G(P)\ge \sum_{A\in P} l(A)-l(V(G))$, where $e_G(P)$ denotes the number of edges of $G$ joining different parts of $P$. Let $λ\in [0,1]$ be a real number and let $η$ be a real function on $X$. In this paper, we show that if $G$ is $l$-partition-connected and for all $S\subseteq X$, $$Θ_l(G \setminus S) \le \sum_{v\in S} (η(v) -2l(v))+l(V(G))+l(S)-λ(e_G(S))+l(S)),$$ then $G$ has an $l$-partition-connected spanning subgraph $H$ such that for each vertex $v\in X$, $d_H(v)\le \lceil η(v) -λl(v) \rceil $, where $e_G(S)$ denotes the number of edges of $G$ with both ends in $S$ and $Θ_l(G \setminus S)$ denotes the maximum number of all $\sum_{A\in P} l(A)-e_{G\setminus S}(P)$ taken over all partitions $P$ of $V(G)\setminus S$. Finally, we show that if $H$ is an $(l_1+\cdots +l_m)$-partition-connected graph, then it can be decomposed into $m$ edge-disjoint spanning subgraphs $H_1,\ldots, H_m$ such that every graph $H_i$ is $l_i$-partition-connected, where $l_1, l_2,\ldots, l_m$ are $m$ intersecting supermodular subadditive integer-valued functions on subsets of $V(H)$. These results generalize several known results.

Let $G$ be a simple graph. The signless Laplacian spread of $G$ is defined as the maximum distance of pairs of its signless Laplacian eigenvalues. This paper establishes some new bounds, both lower and upper, for the signless Laplacian spread. Several of these bounds depend on invariant parameters of the graph. We also use a minmax principle to find several lower bounds for this spectral invariant.

Let $G$ be a graph with edge ideal $I(G)$. We recall the notions of $\min-match_{\{K_2, C_5\}}(G)$ and $\ind-match_{\{K_2, C_5\}}(G)$ from \cite{sy}. We show that $${\rm reg}(I(G)^s)\leq 2s+\min-match_{\{K_2, C_5\}}(G)-1,$$for all $s\geq 1$, which implies that$${\rm reg}(I(G)^s)\leq 2s+\min-match(G)-1.$$Moreover, we show that$${\rm reg}(I(G)^s)\geq 2s+\ind-match_{\{K_2, C_5\}}(G)-2,$$and if $\ind-match_{\{K_2, C_5\}}(G)$ is an odd integer, then$${\rm reg}(I(G)^s)\geq 2s+\ind-match_{\{K_2, C_5\}}(G)-1.$$Furthermore, it is shown that$${\rm reg}(I(G)^s)\leq 2s+\ord-match(G)-1,$$where $\ord-match(G)$ denotes the ordered matching number of $G$. Finally, we construct infinitely many connected graphs which satisfy the following strict inequalities:$$2s+\ind-match(G)-1 < {\rm reg}(I(G)^s)< 2s+{\rm cochord}(G)-1.$$This gives a positive answer to a question asked in \cite{jns}.

Adjacency and Tensor Representation in General Hypergraphs.Part 2: Multisets, Hb-graphs and Related e-adjacency Tensors
HyperBagGraphs (hb-graphs as short) extend hypergraphs by allowing the hyperedges to be multisets. Multisets are composed of elements that have a multiplicity. When this multiplicity has positive integer values, it corresponds to non ordered lists of potentially duplicated elements. We define hb-graphs as family of multisets over a vertex set; natural hb-graphs correspond to hb-graphs that have multiplicity function with positive integer values. Extending the definition of e-adjacency to natural hb-graphs, we define different way of building an e-adjacency tensor, that we compare before having a final choice of the tensor. This hb-graph e-adjacency tensor is used with hypergraphs.

Following Babai's algorithm for the string isomorphism problem, we determine that it is possible to write expressions of short length describing certain permutation cosets, including all permutation subgroups; this is feasible both in the original version of the algorithm and in its CFSG-free version, partially done by Babai and completed by Pyber. The existence of such descriptions gives a weak form of the Cameron-Maróti classification even without assuming CFSG. We also thoroughly explicate Babai's recursion process (as given in Helfgott) and obtain explicit constants for the runtime of the algorithm, both with and without the use of CFSG.
Hamiltonicity of the Cross-Join Graph of de Bruijn Sequences
A generalized de Bruijn digraph generalizes a de Bruijn digraph to the case where the number of vertices need not be a pure power of an integer. Hamiltonian cycles in these digraphs thus generalize regular de~Bruijn cycles, and we will thus refer to them simply as de Bruijn cycles. We define the cross-join to be the graph with all de Bruijn cycles as vertices, there is an edge between two of these vertices if one can be obtained from the other via a cross-join operation. We show that the cross-join graph is connected. This in particular means that any regular de Bruijn cycle can be cross-joined repeatedly to reach any other de Bruijn cycle, generalizing a result about regular binary de Bruijn cycles by Mykkeltveit and Szmidt in 2014. Furthermore, we present an algorithm that produces a Hamiltonian path across the cross-join graph, one that we may call a de~Bruijn sequence of de Bruijn sequences.

Given two Coxeter's frieze patterns with the same width and consisting of positive numbers, choose a row and consider the periodic sequence of the differences of the respective entries of the two friezes. We ask for which rows this sequence must change sign at least four times over the period. We prove that this is the case for the first and for the second non-trivial rows, and that this is true, for all rows, for an infinitesimal version of the question. The article also contains expository material on the four vertex theorem and on Coxeter's frieze patterns.
Automorphism groups of designs with $λ=1$
If $G$ is a finite group and $k =q>2$ or $k=q+1$ for a prime power $q$ then, for infinitely many integers $v$, there is a $2$-$(v,k,1)$-design ${\bf D}$ for which ${\rm Aut} {\bf D}\cong G$.
