A combinatorial characterization of finite groups of prime exponent
Published • View Publication • BIB
The power graph of a group $G$ is a simple and undirected graph with vertex set $G$ and two distinct vertices are adjacent if one is a power of the other. In this article, we characterize (non-cyclic) finite groups of prime exponent and finite elementary abelian $2$-groups (of rank at least $2$) in terms of their power graphs.

Computing Small Unit-Distance Graphs with Chromatic Number 5
We present a new method for reducing the size of graphs with a given property. Our method, which is based on clausal proof minimization, allowed us to compute several 553-vertex unit-distance graphs with chromatic number 5, while the smallest published unit-distance graph with chromatic number 5 has 1581 vertices. The latter graph was constructed by Aubrey de Grey to show that the chromatic number of the plane is at least 5. The lack of a 4-coloring of our graphs is due to a clear pattern enforced on some vertices. Also, our graphs can be mechanically validated in a second, which suggests that the pattern is based on a reasonably short argument.

The permanent functions of tensors
Published in Special Issue of Acta Mathematica Vietnamica (Springer, Article 268) for ICMAA, 2018 • View Publication • BIB
By a tensor we mean a multidimensional array (matrix) or hypermatrix over a number field. This article aims to set an account of the studies on the permanent functions of tensors. We formulate the definitions of 1-permanent, 2-permanent, and $k$-permanent of a tensor in terms of hyperplanes, planes and $k$-planes of the tensor; we discuss the polytopes of stochastic tensors; at end we present an extension of the generalized matrix function for tensors.

New quantum codes constructed from some self-dual additive $\mathbb{F}_4$-codes
Published in Information Processing Letters 138 (2018) 35-38 • View Publication • BIB
For $(n,d)= (66,17),(78,19)$ and $(94,21)$, we construct quantum $[[n,0,d]]$ codes which improve the previously known lower bounds on the largest minimum weights among quantum codes with these parameters. These codes are constructed from self-dual additive $\mathbb{F}_4$-codes based on pairs of circulant matrices.

On the influence of the interaction graph on a finite dynamical system
Published • View Publication • BIB
A finite dynamical system (FDS) is a system of multivariate functions over a finite alphabet, that is typically used to model a network of interacting entities. The main feature of a finite dynamical system is its interaction graph, which indicates which local functions depend on which variables; the interaction graph is a qualitative representation of the interactions amongst entities on the network. As such, a major problem is to determine the effect of the interaction graph on the dynamics of the FDS. In this paper, we are interested in three main properties of an FDS: the number of images (the so-called rank), the number of periodic points (the so-called periodic rank) and the number of fixed points. In particular, we investigate the minimum, average, and maximum number of images (or periodic points, or fixed points) of FDSs with a prescribed interaction graph and a given alphabet size; thus yielding nine quantities to study. The paper is split into two parts. The first part considers the minimum rank, for which we derive the first meaningful results known so far. In particular, we show that the minimum rank decreases with the alphabet size, thus yielding the definition of an absolute minimum rank. We obtain lower and upper bounds on this absolute minimum rank, and we give classification results for graphs with very low (or highest) rank. The second part is a comprehensive survey of the results obtained on the nine quantities described above. We not only give a review of known results, but we also give a list of relevant open questions.
Lower bounds for Laplacian spread and relations with invariant parameters revisited
Let $G=\left( V\left( G\right) ,E\left( G\right) \right) $ be an $\left( n,m\right) $-graph and $X$ a nonempty proper subset of $V\left( G\right) $. Let $X^{c}=V\left( G\right) \backslash X$.\ The edge density of $X$ in $G$ is given by \begin{equation*} ρ_{G}\left( X\right) =\frac{n\left\vert E_{X}\left( G\right) \right\vert }{\left\vert X\right\vert \left\vert X^{c}\right\vert }, \end{equation*} where $E_{X}\left( G\right) \ $ is the set of edges in $G$ with one end in $% X $ and the other in $X^{c}$. The Laplacian spread of a graph is the difference between the greatest Laplacian eigenvalue and the algebraic connectivity. In this paper, we use the edge density of some nonempty proper subsets of vertices in $G$ to establish new lower bounds for the Laplacian spread. Also, using some known numerical inequalities some lower bounds for the Laplacian spread of a graph with a prescribed degree sequence are presented.

On a sufficient condition for a Fano manifold to be covered by rational $N$-folds
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we prove a conjecture by T. Suzuki, which says if a smooth Fano manifold satisfies some positivity condition on its Chern character, then it can be covered by rational $N$-folds. We prove this conjecture by using purely combinatorial properties of Bernoulli numbers.
On the Hyper Zagreb index of certain generalized thorn graphs
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a graph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges. The hyper Zagreb index of $G$, denoted by $HM(G)$, is defined as $HM(G) =\sum\limits_{uv \in E(G)}\left[d_{G}(u)+d_G(v)\right]^{2}$ where $d_G(v)$ denotes the degree of a vertex $v$ in $G$. In this paper we compute the hyper Zagreb index of certain generalized thorn graphs.
Partition problems in high dimensional boxes
Published in J. of Comb. Theory A 166 (2019) 315-336 • View Publication • BIB
Alon, Bohman, Holzman and Kleitman proved that any partition of a $d$-dimensional discrete box into proper sub-boxes must consist of at least $2^d$ sub-boxes. Recently, Leader, Milićević and Tan considered the question of how many odd-sized proper boxes are needed to partition a $d$-dimensional box of odd size, and they asked whether the trivial construction consisting of $3^d$ boxes is best possible. We show that approximately $2.93^d$ boxes are enough, and consider some natural generalisations.
Flag numbers and floating bodies
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate weighted floating bodies of polytopes. We show that the weighted volume depends on the complete flags of the polytope. This connection is obtained by introducing flag simplices, which translate between the metric and combinatorial structure. Our results are applied in spherical and hyperbolic space. This leads to new asymptotic results for polytopes in these spaces. We also provide explicit examples of spherical and hyperbolic convex bodies whose floating bodies behave completely different from any convex body in Euclidean space.

Hodge Decompositions for Weighted Hypergraphs
Weighted hypergraphs are generalizations of weighted simplicial complexes. In recent years, weighted Laplacians of weighted simplicial complexes have been studied. In 2016, as a generalization of the homology of simplicial complexes, the embedded homology of hypergraphs was constructed. In this paper, we generalize the weighted Laplacians of weighted simplicial complexes to weighted hypergraphs. We study the relations between the weighted Laplacians and the weighted embedded homology of weighted hypergraphs. We generalize the Hodge decompositions of weighted simplicial complexes to weighted hypergraphs. Moreover, as a complement for the Hodge decompositions, we give some results for the nonzero eigenvalues of the weighted Laplacians of weighted hypergraphs.

A law of large numbers for the range of rotor walks on periodic trees
The aim of the current work is to prove a law of large numbers for the range size of recurrent rotor walks with random initial configuration on a general class of trees, called periodic trees or directed covers of graphs.

On the chromatic number of generalized Kneser hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The generalized Kneser hypergraph $KG^{r}(n,k,s)$ is the hypergraph whose vertices are all the $k$-subsets of $\{1,\ldots ,n\}$, and edges are $r$-tuples of distinct vertices such that any pair of them has at most $s$ elements in their intersection. In this note, we show that for each non-negative integers $k, n, r, s$ satisfying $n \geq r(k-1)+1$, $k > s\geq 0$, and $r\geq 2$, we have $$χ({KG}^{r}(n,k,s))\geq\left\lceil\frac{n-r(k-s-1)}{r-1}\right\rceil,$$ which improves the previously known result by Alon--Frankl--Lovász.

(3a:a)-list-colorability of embedded graphs of girth at least five
A graph G is list (b:a)-colorable if for every assignment of lists of size b to vertices of G, there exists a choice of an a-element subset of the list at each vertex such that the subsets chosen at adjacent vertices are disjoint. We prove that for every positive integer a, the family of minimal obstructions of girth at least five to list (3a:a)-colorability is strongly hyperbolic, in the sense of the hyperbolicity theory developed by Postle and Thomas. This has a number of consequences, e.g., that if a graph of girth at least five and Euler genus g is not list (3a:a)-colorable, then G contains a subgraph with O(g) vertices which is not list (3a:a) colorable.
Probabilistic nilpotence in infinite groups
Published in Israel J. Math. 244 (2021), 539-588 • View Publication • BIB
The 'degree of k-step nilpotence' of a finite group G is the proportion of the tuples (x_1,...,x_{k+1}) in G^{k+1} for which the simple commutator [x_1,...,x_{k+1}] is equal to the identity. In this paper we study versions of this for an infinite group G, with the degree of nilpotence defined by sampling G in various natural ways, such as with a random walk, or with a Folner sequence if G is amenable. In our first main result we show that if G is finitely generated then the degree of k-step nilpotence is positive if and only if G is virtually k-step nilpotent. This generalises both an earlier result of the second author treating the case k=1 and a result of Shalev for finite groups, and uses techniques from both of these earlier results. We also show, using the notion of polynomial mappings of groups developed by Leibman and others, that to a large extent the degree of nilpotence does not depend on the method of sampling. As part of our argument we generalise a result of Leibman by showing that if f is a polynomial mapping into a torsion-free nilpotent group then the set of roots of f is sparse in a certain sense. In our second main result we consider the case where G is residually finite but not necessarily finitely generated. Here we show that if the degree of k-step nilpotence of the finite quotients of G is uniformly bounded from below then G is virtually k-step nilpotent, answering a question of Shalev. As part of our proof we show that degree of nilpotence of finite groups is sub-multiplicative with respect to quotients, generalising a result of Gallagher.

On the crystal graph description of the stable Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series
Published in J. Number Theory 215 (2020), pp. 186-215 • View Publication • BIB
For a semisimple Lie algebra admitting a good enumeration, we prove a parametrization for the elements in its Weyl group. As an application, we give a coordinate-free comparison between the crystal graph description (when it is known) and the Lie-theoretic description of the Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series in the stable range.
The unicyclic graphs with the second smallest normalized Laplacian eigenvalue no less than $1-\frac{\sqrt{6}}{3}$
Let $λ_{2}(G)$ be the second smallest normalized Laplacian eigenvalue of a graph $G$. In this paper, we determine all unicyclic graphs of order $n\geq21$ with $λ_{2}(G)\geq 1-\frac{\sqrt{6}}{3}$. Moreover, the unicyclic graphs with $λ_{2}(G)=1-\frac{\sqrt{6}}{3}$ are also determined.

Classifying Rotationally-Closed Languages Having Greedy Universal Cycles
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\textbf{T}(n,k)$ be the set of strings of length $n$ over the alphabet $Σ=\{1,2,\ldots,k\}$. A universal cycle for $\textbf{T}(n,k)$ can be constructed using a greedy algorithm: start with the string $k^n$, and continually append the least symbol possible without repeating a substring of length $n$. This construction also creates universal cycles for some subsets $\textbf{S}\subseteq\textbf{T}(n,k)$; we will classify all such subsets that are closed under rotations.

Sign matrix polytopes from Young tableaux
Published in Linear Algebra Appl. 574 (2019), 84-122 • View Publication • BIB
Motivated by the study of polytopes formed as the convex hull of permutation matrices and alternating sign matrices, we define several new families of polytopes as convex hulls of sign matrices, which are certain {0,1,-1}-matrices in bijection with semistandard Young tableaux. We investigate various properties of these polytopes, including their inequality descriptions, vertices, facets, and face lattices, as well as connections to alternating sign matrix polytopes and transportation polytopes.

On Visibility Problems with an Infinite Discrete, set of Obstacles
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper studies visibility problems in Euclidean spaces $\mathbb{R}^d$ where the obstacles are the points of infinite discrete sets $Y\subseteq\mathbb{R}^d$. A point $x\in\mathbb{R}^d$ is called $\varepsilon$-visible for $Y$ (notation: $x\in\mathbf{vis}(Y, \varepsilon))$ if there exists a ray $L\subseteq\mathbb{R}^d$ emanating from $x$ such that $||y-z||\geq\varepsilon$, for all $y\in Y\setminus\{x\}$ and $z\in L$. A point $x\in\mathbb{R}^d$ is called visible for $Y$ (notation: $x\in\mathbf{vis}(Y))$ if $x\in\mathbf{vis}(Y, \varepsilon))$, for some $\varepsilon>0$.\\ Our main result is the following. For every $\varepsilon>0$ and every relatively dense set $Y\subseteq\mathbb{R}^2$, $\mathbf{vis}(Y, \varepsilon))\neq\mathbb{R}^2$. This result generalizes a theorem of Dumitrescu and Jiang, which settled Mitchell's dark forest conjecture. On the other hand, we show that there exists a relatively dense subset $Y\subseteq \mathbb{Z}^d$ such that $\mathbf{vis}(Y)=\mathbb{R}^d$. (One easily verifies that $\mathbf{vis}(\mathbb{Z}^d)=\mathbb{R}^d\setminus\mathbb{Z}^d$, for all $d\geq 2$). We derive a number of other results clarifying how the size of a sets $Y\subseteq\mathbb{R}^d$ may affect the sets $\mathbf{vis}(Y)$ and $\mathbf{vis}(Y,\varepsilon)$. We present a Ramsey type result concerning uniformly separated subsets of $\mathbb{R}^2$ whose growth is faster than linear.
