The Maker-Breaker Rado game on a random set of integers
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given an integer-valued matrix $A$ of dimension $\ell \times k$ and an integer-valued vector $b$ of dimension $\ell$, the Maker-Breaker $(A,b)$-game on a set of integers $X$ is the game where Maker and Breaker take turns claiming previously unclaimed integers from $X$, and Maker's aim is to obtain a solution to the system $Ax=b$, whereas Breaker's aim is to prevent this. When $X$ is a random subset of $\{1,\dots,n\}$ where each number is included with probability $p$ independently of all others, we determine the threshold probability $p_0$ for when the game is Maker or Breaker's win, for a large class of matrices and vectors. This class includes but is not limited to all pairs $(A,b)$ for which $Ax=b$ corresponds to a single linear equation. The Maker's win statement also extends to a much wider class of matrices which include those which satisfy Rado's partition theorem.

Two comments on balls in vertex transitive graphs
We observe that a ball of radius $1$ in the grandfather graph can not be realized as a ball of radius $1$ in a finite vertex transitive graph. We remark on when a ball in a finite vertex transitive graph appears as a ball in an infinite vertex transitive graph.

Determination of the 4-genus of a complete graph (with an appendix)
In this paper, the quadrangular genus (4-genus) of the complete graph $K_p$ is shown to be $γ_4 (K_p) = \lceil {p(p-5)}/{8} \rceil +1$ for orientable surfaces. This means that $K_p$ is minimally embeddable in the closed orientable surface of genus $γ_4 (K_p)$ under the constraint that each face has length at least 4. In the most general setting, the genus of the complete graph was established by Ringel and Youngs and was mainly concerned with triangulations of surfaces. Nonetheless, since then a great deal of interest has also been generated in quadrangulations of surfaces. Hartsfield and Ringel were the first who considered minimal quadrangulations of surfaces. Sections 1--4 of this paper are essentially a reproduction of the original 1998 version as follows: Chen B., Lawrencenko S., Yang H. Determination of the 4-genus of a complete graph, submitted to Discrete Mathematics and withdrawn by S. Lawrencenko, June 1998, URL: https://t.co/cUg6R9Jwyw . More discussion on this 1998 version is held and some copyright issues around the quadrangular genus of complete graphs are clarified in the Appendix to the current version of the paper; the Appendix was written in 2017.

Exploiting symmetry in network analysis
Published in Sánchez-García, R.J. Exploiting symmetry in network analysis. Communications Physics 3, 87 (2020) • View Publication • BIB
Virtually all network analyses involve structural measures between pairs of vertices, or of the vertices themselves, and the large amount of symmetry present in real-world complex networks is inherited by such measures. This has practical consequences which have not yet been explored in full generality, nor systematically exploited by network practitioners. Here we study the effect of network symmetry on arbitrary network measures, and show how this can be exploited in practice in a number of ways, from redundancy compression, to computational reduction. We also uncover the spectral signatures of symmetry for an arbitrary network measure such as the graph Laplacian. Computing network symmetries is very efficient in practice, and we test real-world examples up to several million nodes. Since network models are ubiquitous in the Applied Sciences, and typically contain a large degree of structural redundancy, our results are not only significant, but widely applicable.

Expansion for the product of matrices in groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we give strong lower bounds on the size of the sets of products of matrices in some certain groups. More precisely, we prove an analogue of a result due to Chapman and Iosevich for matrices in $SL_2(\mathbb{F}_p)$ with restricted entries on a small set. We also provide extensions of some recent results on expansion for cubes in Heisenberg group due to Hegyvári and Hennecart.

New results on $k$-independence of hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $H=(V,E)$ be an $s$-uniform hypergraph of order $n$ and $k\geq 0$ be an integer. A $k$-independent set $S\subseteq H$ is a set of vertices such that the maximum degree in the hypergraph induced by $S$ is at most $k$. Denoted by $α_k(H)$ the maximum cardinality of the $k$-independent set of $H$. In this paper, we first give a lower bound of $α_k(H)$ by the maximum degree of $H$. Furthermore, we prove that $α_k(H)\geq \frac{s(k+1)n}{2d+s(k+1)}$ where $d$ is average degree of $H$, and $k\geq 0$ is an integer.

Generalized distance domination problems and their complexity on graphs of bounded mim-width
Published • View Publication • BIB
We generalize the family of $(σ, ρ)$-problems and locally checkable vertex partition problems to their distance versions, which naturally captures well-known problems such as distance-$r$ dominating set and distance-$r$ independent set. We show that these distance problems are XP parameterized by the structural parameter mim-width, and hence polynomial on graph classes where mim-width is bounded and quickly computable, such as $k$-trapezoid graphs, Dilworth $k$-graphs, (circular) permutation graphs, interval graphs and their complements, convex graphs and their complements, $k$-polygon graphs, circular arc graphs, complements of $d$-degenerate graphs, and $H$-graphs if given an $H$-representation. To supplement these findings, we show that many classes of (distance) $(σ, ρ)$-problems are W[1]-hard parameterized by mim-width + solution size.

The Herzog-Schönheim Conjecture for small groups and harmonic subgroups
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that the Herzog-Schönheim Conjecture holds for any group $G$ of order smaller than $1440$. In other words we show that in any non-trivial coset partition $\{g_i U_i\}_{i=1}^n $ of $G$ there exist distinct $1 \leq i, j \leq n$ such that $[G:U_i]=[G:U_j]$. We also study interaction between the indices of subgroups having cosets with pairwise trivial intersection and harmonic integers. We prove that if $U_1$,...,$U_n$ are subgroups of $G$ which have pairwise trivially intersecting cosets and $n \leq 4$ then $[G:U_1]$,...,$[G:U_n]$ are harmonic integers.
Towards Erdos-Hajnal for graphs with no 5-hole
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Erdos-Hajnal conjecture says that for every graph $H$ there exists $c>0$ such that $\max(α(G),ω(G))\ge n^c$ for every $H$-free graph $G$ with $n$ vertices, and this is still open when $H=C_5$. Until now the best bound known on $\max(α(G),ω(G))$ for $C_5$-free graphs was the general bound of Erdos and Hajnal, that for all $H$, $\max(α(G),ω(G))\ge 2^{Ω(\sqrt{\log n })}$ if $G$ is $H$-free. We improve this when $H=C_5$ to $\max(α(G),ω(G))\ge 2^{Ω(\sqrt{\log n \log \log n})}.$
Disconnected Cuts in Claw-free Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A disconnected cut of a connected graph is a vertex cut that itself also induces a disconnected subgraph. The decision problem whether a graph has a disconnected cut is called Disconnected Cut. This problem is closely related to several homomorphism and contraction problems, and fits in an extensive line of research on vertex cuts with additional properties. It is known that Disconnected Cut is NP-hard on general graphs, while polynomial-time algorithms are known for several graph classes. However, the complexity of the problem on claw-free graphs remained an open question. Its connection to the complexity of the problem to contract a claw-free graph to the 4-vertex cycle $C_4$ led Ito et al. (TCS 2011) to explicitly ask to resolve this open question. We prove that Disconnected Cut is polynomial-time solvable on claw-free graphs, answering the question of Ito et al. The centerpiece of our result is a novel decomposition theorem for claw-free graphs of diameter 2, which we believe is of independent interest and expands the research line initiated by Chudnovsky and Seymour (JCTB 2007-2012) and Hermelin et al. (ICALP 2011). On our way to exploit this decomposition theorem, we characterize how disconnected cuts interact with certain cobipartite subgraphs, and prove two further novel algorithmic results, namely Disconnected Cut is polynomial-time solvable on circular-arc graphs and line graphs.

Three colour bipartite Ramsey number of cycles and paths
Published • View Publication • BIB
The $k$-colour bipartite Ramsey number of a bipartite graph $H$ is the least integer $n$ for which every $k$-edge-coloured complete bipartite graph $K_{n,n}$ contains a monochromatic copy of $H$. The study of bipartite Ramsey numbers was initiated, over 40 years ago, by Faudree and Schelp and, independently, by Gyárfás and Lehel, who determined the $2$-colour Ramsey number of paths. In this paper we determine asymptotically the $3$-colour bipartite Ramsey number of paths and (even) cycles.

Minimum $T$-Joins and Signed-Circuit Covering
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a graph and $T$ be a vertex subset of $G$ with even cardinality. A $T$-join of $G$ is a subset $J$ of edges such that a vertex of $G$ is incident with an odd number of edges in $J$ if and only if the vertex belongs to $T$. Minimum $T$-joins have many applications in combinatorial optimizations. In this paper, we show that a minimum $T$-join of a connected graph $G$ has at most $|E(G)|-\frac 1 2 |E(\widehat{\, G\,})|$ edges where $\widehat{\,G\,}$ is the maximum bidegeless subgraph of $G$. Further, we are able to use this result to show that every flow-admissible signed graph $(G,σ)$ has a signed-circuit cover with length at most $\frac{19} 6 |E(G)|$. Particularly, a 2-edge-connected signed graph $(G,σ)$ with even negativeness has a signed-circuit cover with length at most $\frac 8 3 |E(G)|$.

Edge-decomposing graphs into coprime forests
The Barat-Thomassen conjecture, recently proved in [Bensmail et al.: A proof of the Barat-Thomassen conjecture. J. Combin. Theory Ser. B, 124:39-55, 2017.], asserts that for every tree T, there is a constant $c_T$ such that every $c_T$-edge connected graph G with number of edges (size) divisible by the size of T admits an edge partition into copies of T (a T-decomposition). In this paper, we investigate in which case the connectivity requirement can be dropped to a minimum degree condition. For instance, it was shown in [Bensmail et al.: Edge-partitioning a graph into paths: beyond the Barat-Thomassen conjecture. arXiv:1507.08208] that when T is a path with k edges, there is a constant $d_k$ such that every 24-edge connected graph G with size divisible by k and minimum degree $d_k$ has a T-decomposition. We show in this paper that when F is a coprime forest (the sizes of its components being a coprime set of integers), any graph G with sufficiently large minimum degree has an F-decomposition provided that the size of F divides the size of G (no connectivity is required). A natural conjecture asked in [Bensmail et al.: Edge-partitioning a graph into paths: beyond the Barat-Thomassen conjecture. arXiv:1507.08208] asserts that for a fixed tree T, any graph G of size divisible by the size of T with sufficiently high minimum degree has a T-decomposition, provided that G is sufficiently highly connected in terms of the maximal degree of T. The case of maximum degree 2 is answered by paths. We provide a counterexample to this conjecture in the case of maximum degree 3.

Random Partitions and Cohen-Lenstra Heuristics
Published in Ann. Comb. 23 (2019), no. 2, 295-315 • View Publication • BIB
We investigate combinatorial properties of a family of probability distributions on finite abelian p-groups. This family includes several well-known distributions as specializations. These specializations have been studied in the context of Cohen-Lenstra heuristics and cokernels of families of random p-adic matrices.

Nearly orthogonal vectors and small antipodal spherical codes
Published • View Publication • BIB
How can $d+k$ vectors in $\mathbb{R}^d$ be arranged so that they are as close to orthogonal as possible? In particular, define $θ(d,k):=\min_X\max_{x\neq y\in X}|\langle x,y\rangle|$ where the minimum is taken over all collections of $d+k$ unit vectors $X\subseteq\mathbb{R}^d$. In this paper, we focus on the case where $k$ is fixed and $d\to\infty$. In establishing bounds on $θ(d,k)$, we find an intimate connection to the existence of systems of ${k+1\choose 2}$ equiangular lines in $\mathbb{R}^k$. Using this connection, we are able to pin down $θ(d,k)$ whenever $k\in\{1,2,3,7,23\}$ and establish asymptotics for general $k$. The main tool is an upper bound on $\mathbb{E}_{x,y\simμ}|\langle x,y\rangle|$ whenever $μ$ is an isotropic probability mass on $\mathbb{R}^k$, which may be of independent interest. Our results translate naturally to the analogous question in $\mathbb{C}^d$. In this case, the question relates to the existence of systems of $k^2$ equiangular lines in $\mathbb{C}^k$, also known as SIC-POVM in physics literature.

Infinite Reduced Words, Lattice Property And Braid Graph of Affine Weyl Groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we establish a bijection between the infinite reduced words of an affine Weyl group and certain biclosed sets of its positive system and determine all finitely generated biclosed sets in the positive system of an affine Weyl group. Using these results, we show first that the biclosed sets in the standard positive system of rank 3 affine Weyl groups when ordered by inclusion form a complete algebraic ortholattice and secondly that the (generalized) braid graphs of those Coxeter groups are connected, which can be thought of as an infinite version of Tit's solution to the word problem.

A note on two-colorability of nonuniform hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a hypergraph $H$, let $q(H)$ denote the expected number of monochromatic edges when the color of each vertex in $H$ is sampled uniformly at random from the set of size 2. Let $s_{\min}(H)$ denote the minimum size of an edge in $H$. Erdős asked in 1963 whether there exists an unbounded function $g(k)$ such that any hypergraph $H$ with $s_{\min}(H) \geq k$ and $q(H) \leq g(k)$ is two colorable. Beck in 1978 answered this question in the affirmative for a function $g(k) = Θ(\log^* k)$. We improve this result by showing that, for an absolute constant $δ>0$, a version of random greedy coloring procedure is likely to find a proper two coloring for any hypergraph $H$ with $s_{\min}(H) \geq k$ and $q(H) \leq δ\cdot \log k$.
