On the connectivity threshold for colorings of random graphs and hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $Ω_q=Ω_q(H)$ denote the set of proper $[q]$-colorings of the hypergraph $H$. Let $Γ_q$ be the graph with vertex set $Ω_q$ and an edge ${σ,τ\}$ where $σ,τ$ are colorings iff $h(σ,τ)=1$. Here $h(σ,τ)$ is the Hamming distance $|\{v\in V(H):σ(v)\neqτ(v)\}|$. We show that if $H=H_{n,m;k},\,k\geq 2$, the random $k$-uniform hypergraph with $V=[n]$ and $m=dn/k$ then w.h.p. $Γ_q$ is connected if $d$ is sufficiently large and $q\gtrsim (d/\log d)^{1/(k-1)}$.

The skeleton of the UIPT, seen from infinity
Published in Annales Henri Lebesgue, Volume 1 (2018), p. 87-125 • View Publication • BIB
We prove that geodesic rays in the Uniform Infinite Planar Triangulation (UIPT) coalesce in a strong sense using the skeleton decomposition of random triangulations discovered by Krikun. This implies the existence of a unique horofunction measuring distances from infinity in the UIPT. We then use this horofunction to define the skeleton "seen from infinity" of the UIPT and relate it to a simple Galton--Watson tree conditioned to survive, giving a new and particularly simple construction of the UIPT. Scaling limits of perimeters and volumes of horohulls within this new decomposition are also derived, as well as a new proof of the $2$-point function formula for random triangulations in the scaling limit due to Ambjørn and Watabiki.

A generalization of Croot-Lev-Pach's Lemma and a new upper bound for the size of difference sets in polynomial rings
Croot, Lev and Pach used a new polynomial technique to give a new exponential upper bound for the size of three-term progression-free subsets in the groups $(\mathbb Z _4)^n$. The main tool in proving their striking result is a simple lemma about polynomials, which gives interesting new bounds for the size of subsets of the vector space $({\mathbb Z _p})^n$. Our main result is a generalization of this lemma. In the proof we combined Tao's slice rank bounding method with Gröbner basis technique. As an application, we improve Green's results and present new upper bounds for the size of difference sets in polynomial rings. We give a new, more concrete upper bound for the size of arithmetic progression-free subsets in $({\mathbb Z _p})^n$.

Rigid reflections and Kac--Moody algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given any Coxeter group, we define rigid reflections and rigid roots using non-self-intersecting curves on a Riemann surface with labeled curves. When the Coxeter group arises from an acyclic quiver, they are related to the rigid representations of the quiver. For a family of rank 3 Coxeter groups, we show that there is a surjective map from the set of reduced positive roots of a rank 2 Kac--Moody algebra onto the set of rigid reflections. We conjecture that this map is bijective.
$H$-colouring $P_t$-free graphs in subexponential time
A graph is called $P_t$-free if it does not contain the path on $t$ vertices as an induced subgraph. Let $H$ be a multigraph with the property that any two distinct vertices share at most one common neighbour. We show that the generating function for (list) graph homomorphisms from $G$ to $H$ can be calculated in subexponential time $2^{O\left(\sqrt{tn\log(n)}\right)}$ for $n=|V(G)|$ in the class of $P_t$-free graphs $G$. As a corollary, we show that the number of 3-colourings of a $P_t$-free graph $G$ can be found in subexponential time. On the other hand, no subexponential time algorithm exists for 4-colourability of $P_t$-free graphs assuming the Exponential Time Hypothesis. Along the way, we prove that $P_t$-free graphs have pathwidth that is linear in their maximum degree.

Cake-Cutting with Different Entitlements: How Many Cuts are Needed?
Published • View Publication • BIB
A cake has to be divided fairly among $n$ agents. When all agents have equal entitlements, it is known that such a division can be implemented with $n-1$ cuts. When agents may have different entitlements, the paper shows that at least $2 n -2$ cuts may be necessary, and $O(n \log(n))$ cuts are always sufficient.

Tutte Invariants for Alternating Dimaps
An alternating dimap is an orientably embedded Eulerian directed graph where the edges incident with each vertex are directed inwards and outwards alternately. Three reduction operations for alternating dimaps were investigated by Farr. A minor of an alternating dimap can be obtained by reducing some of its edges using the reduction operations. Unlike classical minor operations, these reduction operations do not commute in general. A Tutte invariant for alternating dimaps is a function $ P $ defined on every alternating dimap and taking values in a field such that $ P $ is invariant under isomorphism and obeys a linear recurrence relation involving reduction operations. It is well known that if a graph $ G $ is planar, then the Tutte polynomial $ T $ satisfies $ T(G;x,y)=T(G^{*};y,x) $. We note an analogous relation for the extended Tutte invariants for alternating dimaps introduced by Farr. We then characterise the Tutte invariant for alternating dimaps of genus zero under several conditions. As a result of the non-commutativity of the reduction operations, the recursions based on them cannot always be satisfied. We investigate the properties of alternating dimaps of genus zero that are required in order to obtain a well defined Tutte invariant. Some excluded minor characterisations for these alternating dimaps are also given.

On higher energy decompositions and the sum-product phenomenon
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $A \subset \mathbb{R}$ be finite. We quantitatively improve the Balog-Wooley decomposition, that is $A$ can be partitioned into sets $B$ and $C$ such that $$\max\{E^+(B) , E^{\times}(C)\} \lesssim |A|^{3 - 7/26}, \ \ \max \{E^+(B,A) , E^{\times}(C, A) \}\lesssim |A|^{3 - 1/4}.$$ We use similar decompositions to improve upon various sum-product estimates. For instance, we show $$ |A+A| + |A A| \gtrsim |A|^{4/3 + 5/5277}.$$

A note on polyomino chains with extremum general sum-connectivity index
The general sum-connectivity index of a graph $G$ is defined as $χ_α(G)= \sum_{uv\in E(G)} (d_u + d_{v})^α$ where $d_{u}$ is degree of the vertex $u\in V(G)$, $α$ is a real number different from $0$ and $uv$ is the edge connecting the vertices $u,v$. In this note, the problem of characterizing the graphs having extremum $χ_α$ values from a certain collection of polyomino chain graphs is solved for $α<0$. The obtained results together with already known results (concerning extremum values of polyomino chain graphs) give the complete solution of the aforementioned problem.

Two conjectures in Ramsey-Turán theory
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given graphs $H_1,\ldots, H_k$, a graph $G$ is $(H_1,\ldots, H_k)$-free if there is a $k$-edge-colouring $φ:E(G)\rightarrow [k]$ with no monochromatic copy of $H_i$ with edges of colour $i$ for each $i\in[k]$. Fix a function $f(n)$, the Ramsey-Turán function $\textrm{RT}(n,H_1,\ldots,H_k,f(n))$ is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $(H_1,\ldots,H_k)$-free graph with independence number at most $f(n)$. We determine $\textrm{RT}(n,K_3,K_s,δn)$ for $s\in\{3,4,5\}$ and sufficiently small $δ$, confirming a conjecture of Erdős and Sós from 1979. It is known that $\textrm{RT}(n,K_8,f(n))$ has a phase transition at $f(n)=Θ(\sqrt{n\log n})$. However, the values of $\textrm{RT}(n,K_8, o(\sqrt{n\log n}))$ was not known. We determined this value by proving $\textrm{RT}(n,K_8,o(\sqrt{n\log n}))=\frac{n^2}{4}+o(n^2)$, answering a question of Balogh, Hu and Simonovits. The proofs utilise, among others, dependent random choice and results from graph packings.

A Vizing-type result for semi-total domination
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics 258: 8-12, (2019) • View Publication • BIB
A set of vertices $S$ in a simple isolate-free graph $G$ is a semi-total dominating set of $G$ if it is a dominating set of $G$ and every vertex of $S$ is within distance 2 or less with another vertex of $S$. The semi-total domination number of $G$, denoted by $γ_{t2}(G)$, is the minimum cardinality of a semi-total dominating set of $G$. In this paper, we study semi-total domination of Cartesian products of graphs. Our main result establishes that for any graphs $G$ and $H$, $γ_{t2}(G\,\square\, H)\ge \frac{1}{3}γ_{t2}(G)γ_{t2}(H)$.

Characterizing face and flag vector pairs for polytopes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Grünbaum, Barnette, and Reay in 1974 completed the characterization of the pairs $(f_i,f_j)$ of face numbers of $4$-dimensional polytopes. Here we obtain a complete characterization of the pairs of flag numbers $(f_0,f_{03})$ for $4$-polytopes. Furthermore, we describe the pairs of face numbers $(f_0,f_{d-1})$ for $d$-polytopes; this description is complete for even $d\ge6$ except for finitely many exceptional pairs that are "small" in a well-defined sense, while for odd $d$ we show that there are also "large" exceptional pairs. Our proofs rely on the insight that "small" pairs need to be defined and to be treated separately; in the $4$-dimensional case, these may be characterized with the help of the characterizations of the $4$-polytopes with at most $8$ vertices by Altshuler and Steinberg (1984).

Local optimality of Zaks-Perles-Wills simplices
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 1982, Zaks, Perles and Wills discovered a d-dimensional lattice simplex S_{d,k} with k interior lattice points, whose volume is linear in k and doubly exponential in the dimension d. It is conjectured that, for all d \ge 3 and k \ge 1, the simplex S_{d,k} is a volume maximizer in the family P^d(k) of all d-dimensional lattice polytopes with k interior lattice points. To obtain a partial confirmation of this conjecture, one can try to verify it for a subfamily of P^d(k) that naturally contains S_{d,k} as one of the members. Currently, one does not even know whether S_{d,k} is optimal within the family S^d(k) of all d-dimensional lattice simplices with k interior lattice points. In view of this, it makes sense to look at even narrower families, for example, some subfamilies of S^d(k). The simplex S_{d,k} of Zaks, Perles and Wills has a facet with only one lattice point in the relative interior. We show that S_{d,k} is a volume maximizer in the family of simplices S \in S^d(k) that have a facet with one lattice point in its relative interior. We also show that, in the above family, the volume maximizer is unique up to unimodular transformations.

Planar anti-Ramsey numbers of matchings
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a positive integer $n$ and a planar graph $H$, let $\mathcal{T}_n(H)$ be the family of all plane triangulations $T$ on $n$ vertices such that $T$ contains a subgraph isomorphic to $H$. The planar anti-Ramsey number of $H$, denoted $ar_{_\mathcal{P}}(n, H)$, is the maximum number of colors in an edge-coloring of a plane triangulation $T\in \mathcal{T}_n(H)$ such that $T$ contains no rainbow copy of $H$. In this paper we study planar anti-Ramsey numbers of matchings. For all $t\ge1$, let $M_t$ denote a matching of size $t$. We prove that for all $t\ge6$ and $n\ge 3t-6$, $2n+3t-15\le ar_{_{\mathcal{P}}}(n, {M}_t)\le 2n+4t-14$, which significantly improves the existing lower and upper bounds for $ar_{_\mathcal{P}}(n, M_t)$. It seems that for each $t\ge6$, the lower bound we obtained is the exact value of $ar_{_{\mathcal{P}}}(n, {M}_t)$ for sufficiently large $n$. This is indeed the case for $M_6$. We prove that $ar_{_\mathcal{P}}(n, M_6)=2n+3$ for all $n\ge30$.

Low complexity algorithms in knot theory
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that the genus problem for alternating knots with $n$ crossings has linear time complexity and is in Logspace$(n)$. Almost all alternating knots of given genus possess additional combinatorial structure, we call them standard. We show that the genus problem for these knots belongs to $TC^0$ circuit complexity class. We also show, that the equivalence problem for such knots with $n$ crossings has time complexity $n\log (n)$ and is in Logspace$(n)$ and $TC^{0}$ complexity classes.

A polynomial ideal associated to any $t$-$(v,k,λ)$ design
We consider ordered pairs $(X,\mathcal{B})$ where $X$ is a finite set of size $v$ and $\mathcal{B}$ is some collection of $k$-element subsets of $X$ such that every $t$-element subset of $X$ is contained in exactly $λ$ "blocks" $B\in \mathcal{B}$ for some fixed $λ$. We represent each block $B$ by a zero-one vector $\mathbf{c}_B$ of length $v$ and explore the ideal $\mathcal{I}(\mathcal{B})$ of polynomials in $v$ variables with complex coefficients which vanish on the set $\{ \mathbf{c}_B \mid B \in \mathcal{B}\}$. After setting up the basic theory, we investigate two parameters related to this ideal: $γ_1(\mathcal{B})$ is the smallest degree of a non-trivial polynomial in the ideal $\mathcal{I}(\mathcal{B})$ and $γ_2(\mathcal{B})$ is the smallest integer $s$ such that $\mathcal{I}(\mathcal{B})$ is generated by a set of polynomials of degree at most $s$. We first prove the general bounds $t/2 < γ_1(\mathcal{B}) \le γ_2(\mathcal{B}) \le k$. Examining important families of examples, we find that, for symmetric 2-designs and Steiner systems, we have $γ_2(\mathcal{B}) \le t$. But we expect $γ_2(\mathcal{B})$ to be closer to $k$ for less structured designs and we indicate this by constructing infinitely many triple systems satisfying $γ_2(\mathcal{B})=k$.

Spanning trees in randomly perturbed graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A classical result of Komlós, Sárközy and Szemerédi states that every $n$-vertex graph with minimum degree at least $(1/2+ o(1))n$ contains every $n$-vertex tree with maximum degree $O(n/\log{n})$ as a subgraph, and the bounds on the degree conditions are sharp. On the other hand, Krivelevich, Kwan and Sudakov recently proved that for every $n$-vertex graph $G_α$ with minimum degree at least $αn$ for any fixed $α>0$ and every $n$-vertex tree $T$ with bounded maximum degree, one can still find a copy of $T$ in $G_α$ with high probability after adding $O(n)$ randomly-chosen edges to $G_α$. We extend their results to trees with unbounded maximum degree. More precisely, for a given $n^{o(1)}\leq Δ\leq cn/\log n$ and $α>0$, we determine the precise number (up to a constant factor) of random edges that we need to add to an arbitrary $n$-vertex graph $G_α$ with minimum degree $αn$ in order to guarantee a copy of any fixed $n$-vertex tree $T$ with maximum degree at most~$Δ$ with high probability.

Limiting probabilities for vertices of a given rank in rooted trees
We consider two varieties of labeled rooted trees, and the probability that a vertex chosen from all vertices of all trees of a given size uniformly at random has a given rank. We prove that this probability converges to a limit as the tree size goes to infinity.

Monochromatic loose paths in multicolored $k$-uniform cliques
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 21 no. 4, Graph Theory (October 2, 2019) dmtcs:4372 • View Publication • BIB
For integers $k\ge 2$ and $\ell\ge 0$, a $k$-uniform hypergraph is called a loose path of length $\ell$, and denoted by $P_\ell^{(k)}$, if it consists of $\ell $ edges $e_1,\dots,e_\ell$ such that $|e_i\cap e_j|=1$ if $|i-j|=1$ and $e_i\cap e_j=\emptyset$ if $|i-j|\ge2$. In other words, each pair of consecutive edges intersects on a single vertex, while all other pairs are disjoint. Let $R(P_\ell^{(k)};r)$ be the minimum integer $n$ such that every $r$-edge-coloring of the complete $k$-uniform hypergraph $K_n^{(k)}$ yields a monochromatic copy of $P_\ell^{(k)}$. In this paper we are mostly interested in constructive upper bounds on $R(P_\ell^{(k)};r)$, meaning that on the cost of possibly enlarging the order of the complete hypergraph, we would like to efficiently find a monochromatic copy of $P_\ell^{(k)}$ in every coloring. In particular, we show that there is a constant $c>0$ such that for all $k\ge 2$, $\ell\ge3$, $2\le r\le k-1$, and $n\ge k(\ell+1)r(1+\ln(r))$, there is an algorithm such that for every $r$-edge-coloring of the edges of $K_n^{(k)}$, it finds a monochromatic copy of $P_\ell^{(k)}$ in time at most $cn^k$. We also prove a non-constructive upper bound $R(P_\ell^{(k)};r)\le(k-1)\ell r$.
