On-line Chain Partitioning Approach to Scheduling
An on-line chain partitioning algorithm receives the points of the poset from some externally determined list. Being presented with a new point the algorithm learns the comparability status of this new point to all previously presented ones. As each point is received, the algorithm assigns this new point to a chain in an irrevocable manner and this assignment is made without knowledge of future points. Kierstead presented an algorithm using $(5^w-1)/4$ chains to cover each poset of width $w$. Felsner proved that width $2$ posets can be partitioned on-line into $5$ chains. We present an algorithm using $16$ chains on posets of width $3$. This result significantly narrows down the previous bound of $31$. Moreover, we address the on-line chain partitioning problem for interval orders. Kierstead and Trotter presented an algorithm using $3w-2$ chains. We deal with an up-growing version of an on-line chain partition of interval orders, i.e. we restrict possible inputs by the rule that each new point is maximal at the moment of its arrival. We present an algorithm using $2w-1$ chains and show that there is no better one. These problems come from a need for better algorithms that can be applied to scheduling. Each on-line chain partitioning algorithm schedules tasks in a multiprocessor environment, and therefore can be applied in order to minimize number of processors.
Descent distribution on Catalan words avoiding a pattern of length at most three
Published • View Publication • BIB
Catalan words are particular growth-restricted words over the set of non-negative integers, and they represent still another combinatorial class counted by the Catalan numbers. We study the distribution of descents on the sets of Catalan words avoiding a pattern of length at most three: for each such a pattern $p$ we provide a bivariate generating function where the coefficient of $x^ny^k$ in its series expansion is the number of length $n$ Catalan words with $k$ descents and avoiding $p$. As a byproduct, we enumerate the set of Catalan words avoiding $p$, and we provide the popularity of descents on this set. Some of the obtained enumerating sequences are not yet recorded in the On-line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences.

Almost all string graphs are intersection graphs of plane convex sets
Published • View Publication • BIB
A {\em string graph} is the intersection graph of a family of continuous arcs in the plane. The intersection graph of a family of plane convex sets is a string graph, but not all string graphs can be obtained in this way. We prove the following structure theorem conjectured by Janson and Uzzell: The vertex set of {\em almost all} string graphs on $n$ vertices can be partitioned into {\em five} cliques such that some pair of them is not connected by any edge ($n\rightarrow\infty$). We also show that every graph with the above property is an intersection graph of plane convex sets. As a corollary, we obtain that {\em almost all} string graphs on $n$ vertices are intersection graphs of plane convex sets.

A simple iterative algorithm for maxcut
Published in Journal of Computational Mathematics 42 (2024) 1277 • View Publication • BIB
We propose a simple iterative (SI) algorithm for the maxcut problem through fully using an equivalent continuous formulation. It does not need rounding at all and has advantages that all subproblems have explicit analytic solutions, the cut values are monotonically updated and the iteration points converge to a local optima in finite steps via an appropriate subgradient selection. Numerical experiments on G-set demonstrate the performance. In particular, the ratios between the best cut values achieved by SI and those by some advanced combinatorial algorithms in [Ann. Oper. Res. 248 (2017) 365] are at least $0.986$ and can be further improved to at least $0.997$ by a preliminary attempt to break out of local optima.

Infinite image partition regular matrices - Solution in C-sets
Published • View Publication • BIB
A finite or infinite matrix $A$ is image partition regular provided that whenever $\mathbb{N}$ is finitely colored, there must be some $\overset{\rightarrow}{x}$ with entries from $\mathbb{N}$ such that all entries of $A \overset{\rightarrow}{x}$ are in the same color class. Comparing to the finite case, infinite image partition regular matrices seem more harder to analyze. The concept of centrally image partition regular matrices were introduced to extend the results of finite image partition regular matrices to infinite one. In this paper, we shall introduce the notion of C-image partition regular matrices, an interesting subclass of centrally image partition regular matrices. Also we shall see that many of known centrally image partition regular matrices are C-image partition regular.

Covering Arrays for Equivalence Classes of Words
Published • View Publication • BIB
Covering arrays for words of length $t$ over a $d$ letter alphabet are $k \times n$ arrays with entries from the alphabet so that for each choice of $t$ columns, each of the $d^t$ $t$-letter words appears at least once among the rows of the selected columns. We study two schemes in which all words are not considered to be different. In the first case words are equivalent if they induce the same partition of a $t$ element set. In the second case, words of the same weight are equivalent. In both cases we produce logarithmic upper bounds on the minimum size $k=k(n)$ of a covering array. Definitive results for $t=2,3,4$, as well as general results, are provided.

The Graph Structure of Chebyshev Polynomials over Finite Fields and Applications
Published • View Publication • BIB
We completely describe the functional graph associated to iterations of Chebyshev polynomials over finite fields. Then, we use our structural results to obtain estimates for the average rho length, average number of connected components and the expected value for the period and preperiod of iterating Chebyshev polynomials.
Splittable and unsplittable graphs and configurations
Published in Ars Math. Contemp. 16 (2019) 1-17 • View Publication • BIB
We prove that there exist infinitely many splittable and also infinitely many unsplittable cyclic $(n_3)$ configurations. We also present a complete study of trivalent cyclic Haar graphs on at most 60 vertices with respect to splittability. Finally, we show that all cyclic flag-transitive configurations with the exception of the Fano plane and the Möbius-Kantor configuration are splittable.

Matroids and Codes with the Rank Metric
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the relationship between a q-analogue of matroids and linear codes with the rank metric in the vector space of matrices with entries in a finite field. We prove a Greene type identity for the rank generating function of these matroidal structures and the rank weight enumerator of these linear codes. As an application, we give a combinatorial proof of a MacWilliams type identity for Delsarte rank-metric codes.

Surjections and double posets
The theory and structure of the Hopf algebra of surjections (known as WQSym, the Hopf algebra of word quasi-symmetric functions) parallels largely the one of bijections (known as FQSym or MR, the Hopf algebra of word quasi-symmetric functions or Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra). The study of surjections from a picture and double poset theoretic point of view, which is the subject of the present article, seems instead new. The article is organized as follows. We introduce first a family of double posets, weak planar posets, that generalize the planar posets and are in bijection with surjections or, equivalently, packed words. The following sections investigate their Hopf algebraic properties, which are inherited from the Hopf algebra structure of double posets and their relations with WQSym

Signless Laplacian determinations of some graphs with independent edges
Published • View Publication • BIB
{Signless Laplacian determinations of some graphs with independent edges}% {Let $G$ be a simple undirected graph. Then the signless Laplacian matrix of $G$ is defined as $D_G + A_G$ in which $D_G$ and $A_G$ denote the degree matrix and the adjacency matrix of $G$, respectively. The graph $G$ is said to be determined by its signless Laplacian spectrum ({\rm DQS}, for short), if any graph having the same signless Laplacian spectrum as $G$ is isomorphic to $G$. We show that $G\sqcup rK_2$ is determined by its signless Laplacian spectra under certain conditions, where $r$ and $K_2$ denote a natural number and the complete graph on two vertices, respectively. Applying these results, some {\rm DQS} graphs with independent edges are obtained.

Shellability of face posets of electrical networks and the CW poset property
Published in Advances in Applied Math, 127 (2021), 37 pages • View Publication • BIB
We prove a conjecture of Thomas Lam that the face posets of stratified spaces of planar resistor networks are shellable. These posets are called uncrossing partial orders. This shellability result combines with Lam's previous result that these same posets are Eulerian to imply that they are CW posets, namely that they are face posets of regular CW complexes. Certain subsets of uncrossing partial orders are shown to be isomorphic to type A Bruhat order intervals; our shelling is shown to coincide on these intervals with a Bruhat order shelling which was constructed by Matthew Dyer using a reflection order. Our shelling for uncrossing posets also yields an explicit shelling for each interval in the face posets of the edge product spaces of phylogenetic trees, namely in the Tuffley posets, by virtue of each interval in a Tuffley poset being isomorphic to an interval in an uncrossing poset. This yields a more explicit proof of the result of Gill, Linusson, Moulton and Steel that the CW decomposition of Moulton and Steel for the edge product space of phylogenetic trees is a regular CW decomposition.
Further Consequences of the Colorful Helly Hypothesis
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a family of convex sets in ${\mathbb R}^d$, which are colored with $d+1$ colors. We say that $\mathcal{F}$ satisfies the Colorful Helly Property if every rainbow selection of $d+1$ sets, one set from each color class, has a non-empty common intersection. The Colorful Helly Theorem of Lovász states that for any such colorful family $\mathcal{F}$ there is a color class $\mathcal{F}_i\subset \mathcal{F}$, for $1\leq i\leq d+1$, whose sets have a non-empty intersection. We establish further consequences of the Colorful Helly hypothesis. In particular, we show that for each dimension $d\geq 2$ there exist numbers $f(d)$ and $g(d)$ with the following property: either one can find an additional color class whose sets can be pierced by $f(d)$ points, or all the sets in $\mathcal{F}$ can be crossed by $g(d)$ lines.
Trianguloids and Triangulations of Root Polytopes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Triangulations of a product of two simplices and, more generally, of root polytopes are closely related to Gelfand-Kapranov-Zelevinsky's theory of discriminants, to tropical geometry, tropical oriented matroids, and to generalized permutohedra. We introduce a new approach to these objects, identifying a triangulation of a root polytope with a certain bijection between lattice points of two generalized permutohedra. In order to study such bijections, we define trianguloids as edge-colored graphs satisfying simple local axioms. We prove that trianguloids are in bijection with triangulations of root polytopes.

Induced Saturation of Graphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics, Volume 342, Issue 4, April 2019, Pages 1195-1212 • View Publication • BIB
A graph $G$ is $H$-saturated for a graph $H$, if $G$ does not contain a copy of $H$ but adding any new edge to $G$ results in such a copy. An $H$-saturated graph on a given number of vertices always exists and the properties of such graphs, for example their highest density, have been studied intensively. A graph $G$ is $H$-induced-saturated if $G$ does not have an induced subgraph isomorphic to $H$, but adding an edge to $G$ from its complement or deleting an edge from $G$ results in an induced copy of $H$. It is not immediate anymore that $H$-induced-saturated graphs exist. In fact, Martin and Smith (2012) showed that there is no $P_4$-induced-saturated graph. Behrens et.al. (2016) proved that if $H$ belongs to a few simple classes of graphs such as a class of odd cycles of length at least $5$, stars of size at least $2$, or matchings of size at least $2$, then there is an $H$-induced-saturated graph. This paper addresses the existence question for $H$-induced-saturated graphs. It is shown that Cartesian products of cliques are $H$-induced-saturated graphs for $H$ in several infinite families, including large families of trees. A complete characterization of all connected graphs $H$ for which a Cartesian product of two cliques is an $H$-induced-saturated graph is given. Finally, several results on induced saturation for prime graphs and families of graphs are provided.

Tropical integrable systems and Young tableaux: Shape equivalence and Littlewood-Richardson correspondence
Published in Journal of Integrable Systems, Volume 3, Issue 1, 1 January 2018, xyy011 • View Publication • BIB

Consistent sets of lines with no colorful incidence
We consider incidences among colored sets of lines in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and examine whether the existence of certain concurrences between lines of $k$ colors force the existence of at least one concurrence between lines of $k+1$ colors. This question is relevant for problems in 3D reconstruction in computer vision.

A local characterization of crystals for the quantum queer superalgebra
Published in Annals of Combinatorics (2020) Vol. 24, pp. 3-46 • View Publication • BIB
We define operators on semistandard shifted tableaux and use Stembridge's local characterization for regular graphs to prove they define a crystal structure. This gives a new proof that Schur $P$-polynomials are Schur positive. We define queer crystal operators (also called odd Kashiwara operators) to construct a connected queer crystal on semistandard shifted tableaux of a given shape. Using the tensor rule for queer crystals, this provides a new proof that products of Schur $P$-polynomials are Schur $P$-positive. Finally, to facilitate applications of queer crystals in the context of Schur $P$-positivity, we give local axioms for queer regular graphs, generalizing Stembridge's axioms, that partially characterize queer crystals.
Fast approximation and exact computation of negative curvature parameters of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we study Gromov hyperbolicity and related parameters, that represent how close (locally) a metric space is to a tree from a metric point of view. The study of Gromov hyperbolicity for geodesic metric spaces can be reduced to the study of graph hyperbolicity. The main contribution of this paper is a new characterization of the hyperbolicity of graphs. This characterization has algorithmic implications in the field of large-scale network analysis. A sharp estimate of graph hyperbolicity is useful, e.g., in embedding an undirected graph into hyperbolic space with minimum distortion [Verbeek and Suri, SoCG'14]. The hyperbolicity of a graph can be computed in polynomial-time, however it is unlikely that it can be done in subcubic time. This makes this parameter difficult to compute or to approximate on large graphs. Using our new characterization of graph hyperbolicity, we provide a simple factor 8 approximation algorithm for computing the hyperbolicity of an $n$-vertex graph $G=(V,E)$ in optimal time $O(n^2)$ (assuming that the input is the distance matrix of the graph). This algorithm leads to constant factor approximations of other graph-parameters related to hyperbolicity (thinness, slimness, and insize). We also present the first efficient algorithms for exact computation of these parameters. All of our algorithms can be used to approximate the hyperbolicity of a geodesic metric space. We also show that a similar characterization of hyperbolicity holds for all geodesic metric spaces endowed with a geodesic spanning tree. Along the way, we prove that any complete geodesic metric space $(X,d)$ has such a geodesic spanning tree. We hope that this fundamental result can be useful in other contexts.

Graphs, Ultrafilters and Colourability
Let $β$ be the functor from Set to CHaus which maps each discrete set X to its Stone-Cech compactification, the set $β$ X of ultrafilters on X. Every graph G with vertex set V naturally gives rise to a graph $βG$ on the set $βV$ of ultrafilters on V . In what follows, we interrelate the properties of G and $βG$. Perhaps the most striking result is that G can be finitely coloured iff $βG$ has no loops.
