The replica symmetric phase of random constraint satisfaction problems
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 29 (2020) 346-422 • View Publication • BIB
Random constraint satisfaction problems play an important role in computer science and combinatorics. For example, they provide challenging benchmark instances for algorithms and they have been harnessed in probabilistic constructions of combinatorial structures with peculiar features. In an important contribution [Krzakala et al., PNAS 2007] physicists made several predictions on the precise location and nature of phase transitions in random constraint satisfaction problems. Specifically, they predicted that their satisfiability thresholds are quite generally preceded by several other thresholds that have a substantial impact both combinatorially and computationally. These include the condensation phase transition, where long-range correlations between variables emerge, and the reconstruction threshold. In this paper we prove these physics predictions for a broad class of random constraint satisfaction problems. Additionally, we obtain contiguity results that have implications on Bayesian inference tasks, a subject that has received a great deal of interest recently (e.g., [Banks et al., COLT 2016]).

Random Walks on Polytopes of Constant Corank
We show that the pivoting process associated with one line and $n$ points in $r$-dimensional space may need $Ω(\log^r n)$ steps in expectation as $n \to \infty$. The only cases for which the bound was known previously were for $r \le 3$. Our lower bound is also valid for the expected number of pivoting steps in the following applications: (1) The Random-Edge simplex algorithm on linear programs with $n$ constraints in $d = n - r$ variables; and (2) the directed random walk on a grid polytope of corank $r$ with $n$ facets.
Dimension of CPT posets

A collection of linear orders on $X$, say $\mathcal{L}$, is said to \emph{realize} a partially ordered set (or poset) $\mathcal{P} = (X, \preceq)$ if, for any two distinct $x,y \in X$, $x \preceq y$ if and only if $x \prec_L y$, $\forall L \in \mathcal{L}$. We call $\mathcal{L}$ a \emph{realizer} of $\mathcal{P}$. The \emph{dimension} of $\mathcal{P}$, denoted by $dim(\mathcal{P})$, is the minimum cardinality of a realizer of $\mathcal{P}$. A \emph{containment model} $M_{\mathcal{P}}$ of a poset $\mathcal{P}=(X,\preceq)$ maps every $x \in X$ to a set $M_x$ such that, for every distinct $x,y \in X,\ x \preceq y$ if and only if $M_x \varsubsetneq M_y$. We shall be using the collection $(M_x)_{x \in X}$ to identify the containment model $M_{\mathcal{P}}$. A poset $\mathcal{P}=(X,\preceq)$ is a Containment order of Paths in a Tree (CPT poset), if it admits a containment model $M_{\mathcal{P}}=(P_x)_{x \in X}$ where every $P_x$ is a path of a tree $T$, which is called the host tree of the model. We show that if a poset $\mathcal{P}$ admits a CPT model in a host tree $T$ of maximum degree $Δ$ and radius $r$, then \rogers{$dim(\mathcal{P}) \leq \lg\lg Δ+ (\frac{1}{2} + o(1))\lg\lg\lg Δ+ \lg r + \frac{1}{2} \lg\lg r + \frac{1}{2}\lg π+ 3$. This bound is asymptotically tight up to an additive factor of $\min(\frac{1}{2}\lg\lg\lg Δ, \frac{1}{2}\lg\lg r)$. Further, let $\mathcal{P}(1,2;n)$ be the poset consisting of all the $1$-element and $2$-element subsets of $[n]$ under `containment' relation and let $dim(1,2;n)$ denote its dimension. The proof of our main theorem gives a simple algorithm to construct a realizer for $\mathcal{P}(1,2;n)$ whose cardinality is only an additive factor of at most $\frac{3}{2}$ away from the optimum.

On the centroid of increasing trees
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 21 no. 4, Combinatorics (August 27, 2019) dmtcs:4325 • View Publication • BIB
A centroid node in a tree is a node for which the sum of the distances to all other nodes attains its minimum, or equivalently a node with the property that none of its branches contains more than half of the other nodes. We generalise some known results regarding the behaviour of centroid nodes in random recursive trees (due to Moon) to the class of very simple increasing trees, which also includes the families of plane-oriented and $d$-ary increasing trees. In particular, we derive limits of distributions and moments for the depth and label of the centroid node nearest to the root, as well as for the size of the subtree rooted at this node.
Online Coloring of Short Intervals
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the online graph coloring problem restricted to the intersection graphs of intervals with lengths in $[1,σ]$. For $σ=1$ it is the class of unit interval graphs, and for $σ=\infty$ the class of all interval graphs. Our focus is on intermediary classes. We present a $(1+σ)$-competitive algorithm, which beats the state of the art for $1 < σ< 2$, and proves that the problem we study can be strictly easier than online coloring of general interval graphs. On the lower bound side, we prove that no algorithm is better than $5/3$-competitive for any $σ>1$, nor better than $7/4$-competitive for any $σ>2$, and that no algorithm beats the $5/2$ asymptotic competitive ratio for all, arbitrarily large, values of $σ$. That last result shows that the problem we study can be strictly harder than unit interval coloring. Our main technical contribution is a recursive composition of strategies, which seems essential to prove any lower bound higher than $2$.

Conjugacy growth of commutators
Published • View Publication • BIB
For the free group $F_r$ on $r>1$ generators (respectively, the free product $G_1 * G_2$ of two nontrivial finite groups $G_1$ and $G_2$), we obtain the asymptotic for the number of conjugacy classes of commutators in $F_r$ (respectively, $G_1 * G_2$) with a given word length in a fixed set of free generators (respectively, the set of generators given by the nontrivial elements of $G_1$ and $G_2$). Our result is proven by using the classification of commutators in free groups and in free products by Wicks, and builds on the works of Rivin and Sharp, who asymptotically counted the conjugacy classes of commutator-subgroup elements in $F_r$ with a given word length.

Simultaneous cores with restrictions and a question of Zaleski and Zeilberger
IMPORTANT NOTE: This paper is much rougher than I'd usually submit, and not entirely complete, though the main theorems and proofs should not be hard to follow. Given the ongoing strike at UK Universities it may be some time before I get to complete it to my satisfaction, and in the meantime people I've shared the preliminary draft with would like to be able to reference it. Hence I'm uploading it in its current form, and will update it later. The main new result of this paper is to count the number of (n,n+1)-core partitions with odd parts, answering a question of Zaleski and Zeilberger with bounty a charitable contribution to the OEIS. Along the way, we prove a general theorem giving a recurrence for (n,n+1)-core parts whose smallest part and consecutive part differences are restricted to lie in an arbitrary set M. This theorem unifies many known results about (n,n+1)-core partitions with restrictions. We end with discussions of extensions of the general theorem that keep track of the largest part, number of parts, and size of the partition, and about a few cases where the same methods work on more general simultaneous cores.

Partition-crossing hypergraphs
For a finite set $X$, we say that a set $H\subseteq X$ crosses a partition ${\cal P}=(X_1,\dots,X_k)$ of $X$ if $H$ intersects $\min (|H|,k)$ partition classes. If $|H|\geq k$, this means that $H$ meets all classes $X_i$, whilst for $|H|\leq k$ the elements of the crossing set $H$ belong to mutually distinct classes. A set system ${\cal H}$ crosses ${\cal P}$, if so does some $H\in {\cal H}$. The minimum number of $r$-element subsets, such that every $k$-partition of an $n$-element set $X$ is crossed by at least one of them, is denoted by $f(n,k,r)$. The problem of determining these minimum values for $k=r$ was raised and studied by several authors, first by Sterboul in 1973 [Proc. Colloq. Math. Soc. J. Bolyai, Vol. 10, Keszthely 1973, North-Holland/American Elsevier, 1975, pp. 1387--1404]. The present authors determined asymptotically tight estimates on $f(n,k,k)$ for every fixed $k$ as $n\to \infty$ [Graphs Combin., 25 (2009), 807--816]. Here we consider the more general problem for two parameters $k$ and $r$, and establish lower and upper bounds for $f(n,k,r)$. For various combinations of the three values $n,k,r$ we obtain asymptotically tight estimates, and also point out close connections of the function $f(n,k,r)$ to Turán-type extremal problems on graphs and hypergraphs, or to balanced incomplete block designs.

Circular support in random sorting networks
Published in Transactions of the American Mathematical Society 373.3 (2020): 1529-1553 • View Publication • BIB
A sorting network is a shortest path from $12 \cdots n$ to $n \cdots 2 1$ in the Cayley graph of the symmetric group generated by adjacent transpositions. For a uniform random sorting network, we prove that in the global limit, particle trajectories are supported on $π$-Lipschitz paths. We show that the weak limit of the permutation matrix of a random sorting network at any fixed time is supported within a particular ellipse. This is conjectured to be an optimal bound on the support. We also show that in the global limit, trajectories of particles that start within distance $ε$ of the edge are within $\sqrt{2ε}$ of a sine curve in uniform norm.

The Archimedean limit of random sorting networks
Published • View Publication • BIB
A sorting network (also known as a reduced decomposition of the reverse permutation), is a shortest path from $12 \cdots n$ to $n \cdots 21$ in the Cayley graph of the symmetric group $S_n$ generated by adjacent transpositions. We prove that in a uniform random $n$-element sorting network $σ^n$, all particle trajectories are close to sine curves with high probability. We also find the weak limit of the time-$t$ permutation matrix measures of $σ^n$. As a corollary of these results, we show that if $S_n$ is embedded into $\mathbb{R}^n$ via the map $τ\mapsto (τ(1), τ(2), \dots τ(n))$, then with high probability, the path $σ^n$ is close to a great circle on a particular $(n-2)$-dimensional sphere in $\mathbb{R}^n$. These results prove conjectures of Angel, Holroyd, Romik, and Virag.

$2$-groups behaving as automorphism groups of regular $3$-polytopes

On the Broadcast Routing Problem in Computer Networks
Given an undirected graph $G = (V, E)$, and a vertex $r\in V$, an $r$-acyclic orientation of $G$ is an orientation $OE$ of the edges of $G$ such that the digraph $OG = (V, OE)$ is acyclic and $r$ is the unique vertex with indegree equal to 0. For $w\in \mathbb{R}^E_+$, $k(G, w)$ is the value of the $w$-maximum packing of $r$-arborescences for all $r\in V$ and all $r$-acyclic orientations $OE$ of $G$. In this case, the Broadcast Routing (in Computers Networks) Problem (BRP) is to compute $k(G, w)$, by finding an optimal $r$ and an optimal $r$-acyclic orientation. BRP is a mathematical formulation of multipath broadcast routing in computer networks. In this paper, we provide a polynomial time algorithm to solve BRP in outerplanar graphs. Outerplanar graphs are encountered in many applications such as computational geometry, robotics, etc.

Group Divisible Designs with $λ_1=3$ and Large Second Index
A group divisible design $\mbox{GDD}(m,n;λ_1,λ_2)$, is an ordered pair $(V, \cal{B})$ where $V$ is an $(m+n)$-set of symbols while $\cal{B}$ is a collection of $3$-subsets (called blocks) of $V$ satisfying the following properties: the $(m+n)$-set is divided into 2 groups of size $m$ and of size $n$: each pair of symbols from the same group occurs in exactly $λ_1$ blocks in $\cal{B}$, and each pair of symbols from different groups occurs in exactly $λ_2$ blocks in $\cal{B}$. $λ_1$ and $λ_2$ are referred to as first index and second index, respectively. Here, we focus on an existence problem of $\mbox{GDD}$s when $λ_1=3$ and $λ_2>3$. We obtain the necessary conditions and prove that these conditions are sufficient for most of the cases.

Cylindric Reverse Plane Partitions and 2D TQFT
Published in Séminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire - FPSAC 2018, 80B, 30 • Search Publication
The ring of symmetric functions carries the structure of a Hopf algebra. When computing the coproduct of complete symmetric functions $h_λ$ one arrives at weighted sums over reverse plane partitions (RPP) involving binomial coefficients. Employing the action of the extended affine symmetric group at fixed level $n$ we generalise these weighted sums to cylindric RPP and define cylindric complete symmetric functions. The latter are shown to be $h$-positive, that is, their expansions coefficients in the basis of complete symmetric functions are non-negative integers. We state an explicit formula in terms of tensor multiplicities for irreducible representations of the generalised symmetric group. Moreover, we relate the cylindric complete symmetric functions to a 2D topological quantum field theory (TQFT) that is a generalisation of the celebrated $\mathfrak{\widehat{sl}}_n$-Verlinde algebra or Wess-Zumino-Witten fusion ring, which plays a prominent role in the context of vertex operator algebras and algebraic geometry.
A generating function for the Euler numbers of the second kind and its application
In the paper, 2 explicit formulas for the Euler numbers of the second kind are obtained. Based on those formulas a exponential generating function is deduced. Using the generating function some well-known and new identities for the Euler number of the second kind are obtained.

On 1-factors with prescribed lengths in tournaments
Published • View Publication • BIB
Kühn, Osthus, and Townsend asked whether there exists a constant $C$ such that every strongly $Ct$-connected tournament contains all possible $1$-factors with at most $t$ components. We answer this question in the affirmative. This is best possible up to constant. In addition, we can ensure that each cycle in the $1$-factor contains a prescribed vertex. Indeed, we derive this result from a more general result on partitioning digraphs which are close to semicomplete. More precisely, we prove that there exists a constant $C$ such that for any $k\geq 1$, if a strongly $Ck^4t$-connected digraph $D$ is close to semicomplete, then we can partition $D$ into $t$ strongly $k$-connected subgraphs with prescribed sizes, provided that the prescribed sizes are $Ω(n)$. This result improves the earlier result of Kühn, Osthus, and Townsend. Here, the condition of connectivity being linear in $t$ is best possible, and the condition of prescribed size being $Ω(n)$ is also best possible.
Graphs with equal domination and covering numbers
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Optimization (2020) 39:55-71 • View Publication • BIB
A dominating set of a graph $G$ is a set $D\subseteq V_G$ such that every vertex in $V_G-D$ is adjacent to at least one vertex in $D$, and the domination number $γ(G)$ of $G$ is the minimum cardinality of a dominating set of $G$. A set $C\subseteq V_G$ is a covering set of $G$ if every edge of $G$ has at least one vertex in $C$. The covering number $β(G)$ of $G$ is the minimum cardinality of a covering set of $G$. The set of connected graphs $G$ for which $γ(G)=β(G)$ is denoted by ${\cal C}_{γ=β}$, while ${\cal B}$ denotes the set of all connected bipartite graphs in which the domination number is equal to the cardinality of the smaller partite set. In this paper, we provide alternative characterizations of graphs belonging to ${\cal C}_{γ=β}$ and ${\cal B}$. Next, we present a quadratic time algorithm for recognizing bipartite graphs belonging to ${\cal B}$, and, as a side result, we conclude that the algorithm of Arumugam et al. [2] allows to recognize all the graphs belonging to the set ${\cal C}_{γ=β}$ in quadratic time either. Finally, we consider the related problem of patrolling grids with mobile guards, and show that this problem can be solved in $O(n \log n + m)$ time, where $n$ is the number of line segments of the input grid and $m$ is the number of its intersection points.

On asymptotic formulae in some sum-product questions

In this paper we obtain a series of asymptotic formulae in the sum--product phenomena over the prime field $\mathbf{F}_p$. In the proofs we use usual incidence theorems in $\mathbf{F}_p$, as well as the growth result in ${\rm SL}_2 (\mathbf{F}_p)$ due to Helfgott. Here some of our applications: $\bullet~$ a new bound for the number of the solutions to the equation $(a_1-a_2) (a_3-a_4) = (a'_1-a'_2) (a'_3-a'_4)$, $\,a_i, a'_i\in A$, $A$ is an arbitrary subset of $\mathbf{F}_p$, $\bullet~$ a new effective bound for multilinear exponential sums of Bourgain, $\bullet~$ an asymptotic analogue of the Balog--Wooley decomposition theorem, $\bullet~$ growth of $p_1(b) + 1/(a+p_2 (b))$, where $a,b$ runs over two subsets of $\mathbf{F}_p$, $p_1,p_2 \in \mathbf{F}_p [x]$ are two non--constant polynomials, $\bullet~$ new bounds for some exponential sums with multiplicative and additive characters.

Erdős-Burgess constant of commutative semigroups
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathcal{S}$ be a nonempty commutative semigroup written additively. An element $e$ of $\mathcal{S}$ is said to be idempotent if $e+e=e$. The Erdős-Burgess constant of the semigroup $\mathcal{S}$ is defined as the smallest positive integer $\ell$ such that any $\mathcal{S}$-valued sequence $T$ of length $\ell$ contain a nonempty subsequence the sum of whose terms is an idempotent of $\mathcal{S}$. We make a study of ${\rm I}(\mathcal{S})$ when $\mathcal{S}$ is a direct product of arbitrarily many of cyclic semigroups. We give the necessary and sufficient conditions such that ${\rm I}(\mathcal{S})$ is finite, and in particular, we obtain sharp bounds of ${\rm I}(\mathcal{S})$ in case ${\rm I}(\mathcal{S})$ is finite, and determine the precise values of ${\rm I}(\mathcal{S})$ in some cases which unifies some well known results on the precise values of Davenport constant in the setting of commutative semigroups.
