Nearest-neighbour Markov point processes on graphs with Euclidean edges
Published in Adv. Appl. Probab. 50 (2018) 1275-1293 • View Publication • BIB
We define nearest-neighbour point processes on graphs with Euclidean edges and linear networks. They can be seen as the analogues of renewal processes on the real line. We show that the Delaunay neighbourhood relation on a tree satisfies the Baddeley--Møller consistency conditions and provide a characterisation of Markov functions with respect to this relation. We show that a modified relation defined in terms of the local geometry of the graph satisfies the consistency conditions for all graphs with Euclidean edges.

On the Steiner hyper-Wiener index of a graph
Published in Appl. Math. Comput. 337 (2018) 360-371 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we study the Steiner hyper-Wiener index of a graph, which is obtained from the standard hyper-Wiener index by replacing the classical graph distance with the Steiner distance. It is shown how this index is related to the Steiner Hosoya polynomial, which generalizes similar result for the standard hyper-Wiener index. Next, we show how the Steiner $3$-hyper-Wiener index of a modular graph can be expressed by using the classical graph distances. As the main result, a method for computing this index for median graphs is developed. Our method makes computation of the Steiner $3$-hyper-Wiener index much more efficient. Finally, the method is used to obtain the closed formulas for the Steiner $3$-Wiener index and the Steiner $3$-hyper-Wiener index of grid graphs.

The cost number and the determining number of a graph
The distinguishing number $D(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the least integer $d$ such that $G$ has an vertex labeling with $d$ labels that is preserved only by a trivial automorphism. The minimum size of a label class in such a labeling of $G$ with $D(G) = d$ is called the cost of $d$-distinguishing $G$ and is denoted by $ρ_d(G)$. A set of vertices $S\subseteq V(G)$ is a determining set for $G$ if every automorphism of $G$ is uniquely determined by its action on $S$. The determining number of $G$, Det(G), is the minimum cardinality of determining sets of $G$. In this paper we obtain some general upper and lower bounds for $ρ_d(G)$ based on Det(G). Finally, we compute the cost and the determining number for the friendship graphs and corona product of two graphs.

Sum-perfect graphs
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics, 259 (2019), 232-239 • View Publication • BIB
Inspired by a famous characterization of perfect graphs due to Lovász, we define a graph $G$ to be sum-perfect if for every induced subgraph $H$ of $G$, $α(H) + ω(H) \geq |V(H)|$. (Here $α$ and $ω$ denote the stability number and clique number, respectively.) We give a set of $27$ graphs and we prove that a graph $G$ is sum-perfect if and only if $G$ does not contain any of the graphs in the set as an induced subgraph.
The Maximum Colorful Arborescence problem parameterized by the structure of its color hierarchy graph
Let G=(V,A) be a vertex-colored arc-weighted directed acyclic graph (DAG) rooted in some vertex r, and let H be its color hierarchy graph, defined as follows: V(H) is the color set C of G, and an arc from color c to color c' exists in H if there is an arc in G from a vertex of color c to a vertex of color c'. In this paper, we study the MAXIMUM COLORFUL ARBORESCENCE problem (or MCA), which takes as input a DAG G with the additional constraint that H is also a DAG, and aims at finding in G an arborescence rooted in r, of maximum weight, and in which no color appears more than once. The MCA problem is motivated by the inference of unknown metabolites from mass spectrometry experiments. However, whereas the problem has been studied for roughly ten years, the crucial property that H is necessarily a DAG has only been pointed out and exploited very recently. In this paper, we further investigate MCA under this new light, by providing algorithmic results for the problem, with a specific focus on fixed-parameterized tractability (FPT) issues, and relatively to different structural parameters of H. In particular, we provide an O*(3^{nhs}) time algorithm for solving MCA, where nhs is the number of vertices of indegree at least two in H, thereby improving the O*(3^{|C|}) algorithm from [Böcker et al. 2008]. We also prove that MCA is W[2]-hard relatively to the treewidth Ht of H, and further show that it is FPT relatively to Ht+lc, where lc = |V| - |C|.
On the Turán number of some ordered even cycles
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, 73 (2018), 81-88 • View Publication • BIB
A classical result of Bondy and Simonovits in extremal graph theory states that if a graph on $n$ vertices contains no cycle of length $2k$ then it has at most $O(n^{1+1/k})$ edges. However, matching lower bounds are only known for $k=2,3,5$. In this paper we study ordered variants of this problem and prove some tight estimates for a certain class of ordered cycles that we call bordered cycles. In particular, we show that the maximum number of edges in an ordered graph avoiding bordered cycles of length at most $2k$ is $Θ(n^{1+1/k})$. Strengthening the result of Bondy and Simonovits in the case of 6-cycles, we also show that it is enough to forbid these bordered orderings of the 6-cycle to guarantee an upper bound of $O(n^{4/3})$ on the number of edges.

Colorful coverings of polytopes and piercing numbers of colorful d-intervals
Published in Combinatorica 39 (3), 627-637 (2019) • View Publication • BIB
We prove a common strengthening of Bárány's colorful Carathéodory theorem and the KKMS theorem. In fact, our main result is a colorful polytopal KKMS theorem, which extends a colorful KKMS theorem due to Shih and Lee [Math. Ann. 296 (1993), no. 1, 35--61] as well as a polytopal KKMS theorem due to Komiya [Econ. Theory 4 (1994), no. 3, 463--466]. The (seemingly unrelated) colorful Carathéodory theorem is a special case as well. We apply our theorem to establish an upper bound on the piercing number of colorful d-interval hypergraphs, extending earlier results of Tardos [Combinatorica 15 (1995), no. 1, 123--134] and Kaiser [Discrete Comput. Geom. 18 (1997), no. 2, 195--203].

Butson-type complex Hadamard matrices and association schemes on Galois rings of characteristic 4
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider nonsymmetric hermitian complex Hadamard matrices belonging to the Bose-Mesner algebra of commutative nonsymmetric association schemes. First, we give a characterization of the eigenmatrix of a commutative nonsymmetric association scheme of class 3 whose Bose-Mesner algebra contains a nonsymmetric hermitian complex Hadamard matrix, and show that such a complex Hadamard matrix is necessarily a Butson-type complex Hadamard matrix whose entries are 4-th roots of unity. We also give nonsymmetric association schemes X of class 6 on Galois rings of characteristic 4, and classify hermitian complex Hadamard matrices belonging to the Bose-Mesner algebra of X. It is shown that such a matrix is again necessarily a Butson-type complex Hadamard matrix whose entries are 4-th roots of unity.

Entropy Compression Method and Legitimate Colorings in Projective Planes
We prove that the entropy compression method systematized by L. Esperet and A. Parreau [11] can be applied to any problem formulated in the variable version of the Lovász Local Lemma. As an application, we prove the existence of legitimate colorings for projective planes with small orders, which extends results of N. Alon and Z. Füredi [2]. In fact, we allow different numbers of colors, proving that projective planes of any order can be legitimate colored with 42 colors.

Quarter-Turn Baxter Permutations
Baxter permutations are known to be in bijection with a wide number of combinatorial objects. Previously, it was shown that each of these objects had a natural involution which was carried equivariantly by the known bijections, and the number of objects fixed under involution was given by Stembridge's $q=-1$ phenomenon. In this paper, we consider the order 4 action of a quarter-turn rotation of a Baxter permutation matrix, refining the half-turn rotation previously studied. Using the method of generating trees, we show that the number of Baxter permutations fixed under quarter-turn rotation has a very nice enumeration, which suggests the existence of a combinatorial bijection.
A proof of the Delta Conjecture when $q=0$
Published • View Publication • BIB
In [The Delta Conjecture, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., to appear] Haglund, Remmel, Wilson introduce a conjecture which gives a combinatorial prediction for the result of applying a certain operator to an elementary symmetric function. This operator, defined in terms of its action on the modified Macdonald basis, has played a role in work of Garsia and Haiman on diagonal harmonics, the Hilbert scheme, and Macdonald polynomials [A. M. Garsia and M. Haiman. A remarkable $q,t$-Catalan sequence and $q$-Lagrange inversion, J. Algebraic Combin. 5 (1996), 191--244], [M. Haiman, Vanishing theorems and character formulas for the Hilbert scheme of points in the plane, Invent. Math. 149 (2002), 371-407]. The Delta Conjecture involves two parameters $q,t$; in this article we give the first proof that the Delta Conjecture is true when $q=0$ or $t=0$.

Spanning tree with lower bound on the degrees
We concentrate on some recent results of Egawa and Ozeki [J. Graph Theory, 2015 and Combinatorica, 2014], and He et al. [J. Graph Theory, 2002]. We give shorter proofs and polynomial time algorithms as well. We present two new proofs for the sufficient condition for having a spanning tree with prescribed lower bounds on the degrees, achieved recently by Egawa and Ozeki. The first one is a natural proof using induction, and the second one is a simple reduction to the theorem of Lovász. Using an algorithm of Frank we show that the condition of the theorem can be checked in time $O(m\sqrt{n})$, and moreover, in the same running time -- if the condition is satisfied -- we can also generate the spanning tree required. This gives the first polynomial time algorithm for this problem. Next we show a nice application of this theorem for the simplest case of the Weak Nine Dragon Tree Conjecture, and for the game coloring number of planar graphs, first discovered by He et al. Finally, we give a shorter proof and a polynomial time algorithm for a good characterization of having a spanning tree with prescribed degree lower bounds, for the special case when $G[S]$ is a cograph, where $S$ is the set of the vertices having degree lower bound prescription at least two. This theorem was proved by Egawa and Ozeki in 2014 while they did not give a polynomial time algorithm.

On vertex coloring without monochromatic triangles
We study a certain relaxation of the classic vertex coloring problem, namely, a coloring of vertices of undirected, simple graphs, such that there are no monochromatic triangles. We give the first classification of the problem in terms of classic and parametrized algorithms. Several computational complexity results are also presented, which improve on the previous results found in the literature. We propose the new structural parameter for undirected, simple graphs -- the triangle-free chromatic number $χ_3$. We bound $χ_3$ by other known structural parameters. We also present two classes of graphs with interesting coloring properties, that play pivotal role in proving useful observation about our problem. We give/ask several conjectures/questions throughout this paper to encourage new research in the area of graph coloring.
The Geometry of Gaussoids
Published in Foundations of Computational Mathematics 19 (2019), pp. 775-812 • View Publication • BIB
A gaussoid is a combinatorial structure that encodes independence in probability and statistics, just like matroids encode independence in linear algebra. The gaussoid axioms of Lnenicka and Matús are equivalent to compatibility with certain quadratic relations among principal and almost-principal minors of a symmetric matrix. We develop the geometric theory of gaussoids, based on the Lagrangian Grassmannian and its symmetries. We introduce oriented gaussoids and valuated gaussoids, thus connecting to real and tropical geometry. We classify small realizable and non-realizable gaussoids. Positive gaussoids are as nice as positroids: they are all realizable via graphical models.

Rowmotion and Increasing Labeling Promotion
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory Series A, Volume 164, 2019, Pages 72-108 • View Publication • BIB
In 2012, N. Williams and the second author showed that on order ideals of ranked partially ordered sets (posets), rowmotion is conjugate to (and thus has the same orbit structure as) a different toggle group action, which in special cases is equivalent to promotion on linear extensions of posets constructed from two chains. In 2015, O. Pechenik and the first and second authors extended these results to show that increasing tableaux under K-promotion naturally corresponds to order ideals in a product of three chains under a toggle group action conjugate to rowmotion they called hyperplane promotion. In this paper, we generalize these results to the setting of arbitrary increasing labelings of any finite poset with given restrictions on the labels. We define a generalization of K-promotion in this setting and show it corresponds to a toggle group action we call toggle-promotion on order ideals of an associated poset. When the restrictions on labels are particularly nice (for example, specifying a global bound on all labels used), we show that toggle-promotion is conjugate to rowmotion. Additionally, we show that any poset that can be nicely embedded into a Cartesian product has a natural toggle-promotion action conjuate to rowmotion.

Directed Hamilton cycles in digraphs and matching alternating Hamilton cycles in bipartite graphs

In 1972, Woodall raised the following Ore type condition for directed Hamilton cycles in digraphs: Let $D$ be a digraph. If for every vertex pair $u$ and $v$, where there is no arc from $u$ to $v$, we have $d^+u)+d^-(v)\geq |D|$, then $D$ has a directed Hamilton cycle. By a correspondence between bipartite graphs and digraphs, the above result is equivalent to the following result of Las Vergnas: Let $G = (B,W)$ be a balanced bipartite graph. If for any $b \in B$ and $w \in W$, where $b$ and $w$ are nonadjacent, we have $d(w)+d(b) \geq |G|/2 + 1$, then every perfect matching of $G$ is contained in a Hamilton cycle. The lower bounds in both results are tight. In this paper, we reduce both bounds by $1$, and prove that the conclusions still hold, with only a few exceptional cases that can be clearly characterized.

The geometric $R$-matrix for affine crystals of type $A$
Published • View Publication • BIB
In [Frieden, arXiv:1706.02844], we constructed a geometric crystal on the variety $\mathbb{X}_{k} := {\rm Gr}(k,n) \times \mathbb{C}^\times$ which tropicalizes to the affine crystal structure on rectangular tableaux with $n-k$ rows. In this sequel, we define and study the geometric $R$-matrix, a birational map $R : \mathbb{X}_{k_1} \times \mathbb{X}_{k_2} \rightarrow \mathbb{X}_{k_2} \times \mathbb{X}_{k_1}$ which tropicalizes to the combinatorial $R$-matrix on pairs of rectangular tableaux. We show that $R$ is an isomorphism of geometric crystals, and that it satisfies the Yang--Baxter relation. In the case where both tableaux have one row, we recover a birational action of the symmetric group that has appeared in the literature in a number of contexts. We also define a rational function $E : \mathbb{X}_{k_1} \times \mathbb{X}_{k_2} \rightarrow \mathbb{C}$ which tropicalizes to the coenergy function from affine crystal theory. Most of the properties of the geometric $R$-matrix follow from the fact that it gives the unique solution to a certain equation of matrices in the loop group ${\rm GL}_n(\mathbb{C}(λ))$.

Partitioning the vertices of a torus into isomorphic subgraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $H$ be an induced subgraph of the torus $C_k^m$. We show that when $k \ge 3$ is even and $|V(H)|$ divides some power of $k$, then for sufficiently large $n$ the torus $C_k^n$ has a perfect vertex-packing with induced copies of $H$. On the other hand, disproving a conjecture of Gruslys, we show that when $k$ is odd and not a prime power, then there exists $H$ such that $|V(H)|$ divides some power of $k$, but there is no $n$ such that $C_k^n$ has a perfect vertex-packing with copies of $H$. We also disprove a conjecture of Gruslys, Leader and Tan by exhibiting a subgraph $H$ of the $k$-dimensional hypercube $Q_k$, such that there is no $n$ for which $Q_n$ has a perfect edge-packing with copies of $H$.

A density version of Cobham's theorem
Published • View Publication • BIB
Cobham's theorem asserts that if a sequence is automatic with respect to two multiplicatively independent bases, then it is ultimately periodic. We prove a stronger density version of the result: if two sequences which are automatic with respect to two multiplicatively independent bases coincide on a set of density one, then they also coincide on a set of density one with a periodic sequence. We apply the result to a problem of Deshouillers and Ruzsa concerning the least nonzero digit of $n!$ in base $12$.
