The distance spectra of the derangement graphs
In this paper, we consider the distance spectra of the derangement graphs. First we give a constructive proof that the connected derangement graphs are of diameter 2. Then we obtain their distance spectra. In particular, we determine all their extremal distance eigenvalues.
Tropical spectrahedra
Published in Discrete and Computational Geometry, volume 63, pages 507-548, 2020 • View Publication • BIB
We introduce tropical spectrahedra, defined as the images by the nonarchimedean valuation of spectrahedra over the field of real Puiseux series. We provide an explicit polyhedral characterization of generic tropical spectrahedra, involving principal tropical minors of size at most 2. One of the key ingredients is Denef-Pas quantifier elimination result over valued fields. We obtain from this that the nonarchimedean valuation maps semialgebraic sets to semilinear sets that are closed. We also prove that, under a regularity assumption, the image by the valuation of a basic semialgebraic set is obtained by tropicalizing the inequalities which define it.
Generating functions and statistics on spaces of maximal tori in classical Lie groups
Published in New York J. Math. 23 (2017) 165-191 • Search Publication
In this paper we use generating function methods to obtain new asymptotic results about spaces of $F$-stable maximal tori in $GL_n(\overline{F_q})$, $Sp_{2n}(\overline{F_q})$, and $SO_{2n+1}(\overline{F_q})$. We recover stability results of Church--Ellenberg--Farb and Jiménez Rolland--Wilson for "polynomial" statistics on these spaces, and we compute explicit formulas for their stable values. We derive a double generating function for the characters of the cohomology of flag varieties in type B/C, which we use to obtain analogs in type B/C of results of Chen: we recover "twisted homological stability" for the spaces of maximal tori in $Sp_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$ and $SO_{2n+1}(\mathbb{C})$, and we compute a generating function for their "stable twisted Betti numbers". We also give a new proof of a result of Lehrer using symmetric function theory.

The K Shortest Paths Problem with Application to Routing
Due to the computational complexity of finding almost shortest simple paths, we propose that identifying a larger collection of (nonbacktracking) paths is more efficient than finding almost shortest simple paths on positively weighted real-world networks. First, we present an easy to implement $O(m\log m+kL)$ solution for finding all (nonbacktracking) paths with bounded length $D$ between two arbitrary nodes on a positively weighted graph, where $L$ is an upperbound for the number of nodes in any of the $k$ outputted paths. Subsequently, we illustrate that for undirected Chung-Lu random graphs, the ratio between the number of nonbacktracking and simple paths asymptotically approaches $1$ with high probability for a wide range of parameters. We then consider an application to the almost shortest paths algorithm to measure path diversity for internet routing in a snapshot of the Autonomous System graph subject to an edge deletion process.

A Noisy-Influence Regularity Lemma for Boolean Functions
We present a regularity lemma for Boolean functions $f:\{-1,1\}^n \to \{-1,1\}$ based on noisy influence, a measure of how locally correlated $f$ is with each input bit. We provide an application of the regularity lemma to weaken the conditions on the Majority is Stablest Theorem. We also prove a "homogenized" version stating that there is a set of input bits so that most restrictions of $f$ on those bits have small noisy influences. These results were sketched out by [OSTW10], but never published. With their permission, we present the full details here.

There are asymptotically the same number of Latin squares of each parity
Published in Bull. Aust. Math. Soc. 94 (2016), 187-194 • View Publication • BIB
A Latin square is reduced if its first row and column are in natural order. For Latin squares of a particular order $n$ there are four possible different parities. We confirm a conjecture of Stones and Wanless by showing asymptotic equality between the numbers of reduced Latin squares of each possible parity as the order $n\rightarrow\infty$.

Semiclassical asymptotics of quantum weighted Hurwitz numbers
Published • View Publication • BIB
This work concerns the semiclassical asymptotics of quantum weighted double Hurwitz numbers. We compute the leading term of the partition function for three versions of the quantum weighted Hurwitz numbers, as well as lower order semiclassical corrections. The classical limit $\hbar \to 0$ is shown to reproduce the simple Hurwitz numbers studied by Pandharipande and Okounkov. The KP-Toda $τ$-function serving as generating function for the quantum Hurwitz numbers is shown to converge in the classical limit to the generating function of Pandharipande and Okounkov and, with suitable scaling, so do the partition function, the weights and expectations of Hurwitz numbers.

Lozenge tilings of a halved hexagon with an array of triangles removed from the boundary
Published • View Publication • BIB
Proctor's work on staircase plane partitions yields an enumeration of lozenge tilings of a halved hexagon on the triangular lattice. Rohatgi recently extended this tiling enumeration to a halved hexagon with a triangle removed from the boundary. In this paper we prove a generalization of the results of Proctor and Rohatgi by enumerating lozenge tilings of a halved hexagon in which an array of adjacent triangles has been removed from the boundary.

Discrepancy and large dense monochromatic subsets
Published • View Publication • BIB
Erdős and Pach (1983) introduced the natural degree-based generalisations of Ramsey numbers, where instead of seeking large monochromatic cliques in a $2$-edge coloured complete graph, we seek monochromatic subgraphs of high minimum or average degree. Here we expand the study of these so-called quasi-Ramsey numbers in a few ways, in particular, to multiple colours and to uniform hypergraphs. Quasi-Ramsey numbers are known to exhibit a certain unique phase transition and we show that this is also the case across the settings we consider. Our results depend on a density-biased notion of hypergraph discrepancy optimised over sets of bounded size, which may be of independent interest.

Subgraphs with large minimum $\ell$-degree in hypergraphs where almost all $\ell$-degrees are large
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be an $r$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices such that all but at most $\varepsilon \binom{n}{\ell}$ $\ell$-subsets of vertices have degree at least $p \binom{n-\ell}{r-\ell}$. We show that $G$ contains a large subgraph with high minimum $\ell$-degree.

Convex cones, integral zonotopes, limit shape
This paper is about integral zonotopes. It is proven that large zonotopes in a convex cone have a limit shape, meaning that, after suitable scaling, the overwhelming majority of the zonotopes are very close to a fixed convex set. Several combinatorial properties of large zonotopes are established.

Nordhaus-Gaddum type inequalities for multiple domination and packing parameters in graphs
Published in Contributions to Discrete Mathematics, 2020 • View Publication • BIB
We study the Nordhaus-Gaddum type results for $(k-1,k,j)$ and $k$-domination numbers of a graph $G$ and investigate these bounds for the $k$-limited packing and $k$-total limited packing numbers in graphs. As the special case $(k-1,k,j)=(1,2,0)$ we give an upper bound on $dd(G)+dd(\overline{G})$ stronger than that presented by Harary and Haynes (1996). Moreover, we establish upper bounds on the sum and product of packing and open packing numbers and characterize all graphs attaining these bounds.

Some Nonexistence Results for Strong External Difference Families Using Character Theory
In this paper, we study the existence of $(v,m,k,λ)$-strong external difference families (SEDFs). We use character-theoretic techniques to show that no SEDF exists when $v$ is prime, $k > 1$ and $m > 2$. In the case where $v$ is the product of two distinct odd primes, some necessary conditions are derived, which can be used to rule out certain parameter sets. Further, we show that, when $m=3$ or $4$ and $v > m$, a $(v,m,k,λ)$-SEDF does not exist.

On lexicographic approximations of integer programs
We use the lexicographic order to define a hierarchy of primal and dual bounds on the optimum of a bounded integer program. These bounds are constructed using lex maximal and minimal feasible points taken under different permutations. Their strength is analyzed and it is shown that a family of primal bounds is tight for any $0\backslash 1$ program with nonnegative linear objective, and a different family of dual bounds is tight for any packing- or covering-type $0\backslash 1$ program with an arbitrary linear objective. The former result yields a structural characterization for the optimum of $0\backslash 1$ programs, with connections to matroid optimization, and a heuristic for general integer programs. The latter result implies a stronger polyhedral representation for the integer feasible points and a new approach for deriving strong valid inequalities to the integer hull. Since the construction of our bounds depends on the computation of lex optima, we derive explicit formulae for lex optima of some special polytopes, such as polytopes that are monotone with respect to each variable, and integral polymatroids and their base polytopes. We also classify $\mathrm{P}$ and $\mathrm{NP}$-$\mathrm{hard}$ cases of computing lex bounds and lex optima.
Competition in growth and urns
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study survival among two competing types in two settings: a planar growth model related to two-neighbour bootstrap percolation, and a system of urns with graph-based interactions. In the planar growth model, uncoloured sites are given a colour at rate $0$, $1$ or $\infty$, depending on whether they have zero, one, or at least two neighbours of that colour. In the urn scheme, each vertex of a graph $G$ has an associated urn containing some number of either blue or red balls (but not both). At each time step, a ball is chosen uniformly at random from all those currently present in the system, a ball of the same colour is added to each neighbouring urn, and balls in the same urn but of different colours annihilate on a one-for-one basis. We show that, for every connected graph $G$ and every initial configuration, only one colour survives almost surely. As a corollary, we deduce that in the two-type growth model on $\mathbb{Z}^2$, one of the colours only infects a finite number of sites with probability one. We also discuss generalisations to higher dimensions and multi-type processes, and list a number of open problems and conjectures.

Induced Turán numbers
Published • View Publication • BIB
The classical Kővári-Sós-Turán theorem states that if $G$ is an $n$-vertex graph with no copy of $K_{s,t}$ as a subgraph, then the number of edges in $G$ is at most $O(n^{2-1/s})$. We prove that if one forbids $K_{s,t}$ as an induced/ subgraph, and also forbids any/ fixed graph $H$ as a (not necessarily induced) subgraph, the same asymptotic upper bound still holds, with different constant factors. This introduces a nontrivial angle from which to generalize Turán theory to induced forbidden subgraphs, which this paper explores. Along the way, we derive a nontrivial upper bound on the number of cliques of fixed order in a $K_r$-free graph with no induced copy of $K_{s,t}$. This result is an induced analog of a recent theorem of Alon and Shikhelman and is of independent interest.

Linear separation of connected dominating sets in graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A connected dominating set in a graph is a dominating set of vertices that induces a connected subgraph. Following analogous studies in the literature related to independent sets, dominating sets, and total dominating sets, we study in this paper the class of graphs in which the connected dominating sets can be separated from the other vertex subsets by a linear weight function. More precisely, we say that a graph is connected-domishold if it admits non-negative real weights associated to its vertices such that a set of vertices is a connected dominating set if and only if the sum of the corresponding weights exceeds a certain threshold. We characterize the graphs in this non-hereditary class in terms of a property of the set of minimal cutsets of the graph. We give several characterizations for the hereditary case, that is, when each connected induced subgraph is required to be connected-domishold. The characterization by forbidden induced subgraphs implies that the class properly generalizes two well known classes of chordal graphs, the block graphs and the trivially perfect graphs. Finally, we study certain algorithmic aspects of connected-domishold graphs. Building on connections with minimal cutsets and properties of the derived hypergraphs and Boolean functions, we show that our approach leads to new polynomially solvable cases of the weighted connected dominating set problem.
Hamiltonicity of planar graphs with a forbidden minor

Tutte showed that $4$-connected planar graphs are Hamiltonian, but it is well known that $3$-connected planar graphs need not be Hamiltonian. We show that $K_{2,5}$-minor-free $3$-connected planar graphs are Hamiltonian. This does not extend to $K_{2,5}$-minor-free $3$-connected graphs in general, as shown by the Petersen graph, and does not extend to $K_{2,6}$-minor-free $3$-connected planar graphs, as we show by an infinite family of examples.

Degree of W-operator and Noncrossing Partition
Published in Bull. Aust. Math. Soc. 101 (2020), no. 2, 186-200 • View Publication • BIB
Goulden and Jackson first introduced the cut-and-join operator. The cut-and-join is widely used in studying the Hurwitz number and many other topological recursion problems. Mironov, Morosov and Natanzon give a more general construction and call it W-operator W([n]). As a special case, the cut-and-join operator is W([2]). In this paper, we study the structure of W([n]). We prove that W([n]) can be written as the sum of n! terms and each term corresponds uniquely to a permutation in Sn. We also define the degree of each term. We prove that there is a correspondence between the terms of W([n]) with highest degree and the noncrossing partitions.

Cycles with two blocks in $k$-chromatic digraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $k$ and $\ell$ be positive integers. A cycle with two blocks $c(k,\ell)$ is an oriented cycle which consists of two internally (vertex) disjoint directed paths of lengths at least $k$ and $\ell$, respectively, from a vertex to another one. A problem of Addario-Berry, Havet and Thomassé (2007) asked if, given positive integers $k$ and $\ell$ such that $k+\ell\ge 4$, any strongly connected digraph $D$ containing no $c(k,\ell)$ has chromatic number at most $k+\ell-1$. In this paper, we show that such digraph $D$ has chromatic number at most $O((k+\ell)^2)$, improving the previous upper bound $O((k+\ell)^4)$ obtained by Cohen, Havet, Lochet and Nisse (2016). In fact, we are able to find a digraph which shows that the answer to the above problem is no. We also show that if in addition $D$ is Hamiltonian, then its underlying simple graph is $(k+\ell-1)$-degenerate and thus the chromatic number of $D$ is at most $k+\ell$, which is tight.
