Superlinear subset partition graphs with dimension reduction, strong adjacency, and endpoint count
Published • View Publication • BIB
We construct a sequence of subset partition graphs satisfying the dimension reduction, adjacency, strong adjacency, and endpoint count properties whose diameter has a superlinear asymptotic lower bound. These abstractions of polytope graphs give further evidence against the Linear Hirsch Conjecture.

An improvement on the Delsarte-type LP-bound with application to MUBs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The linear programming (LP) bound of Delsarte can be applied to several problems in various branches of mathematics. We describe a general Fourier analytic method to get a slight improvement on this bound. We then apply our method to the problem of mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) to prove that the Fourier family $F(a,b)$ in dimension 6 cannot be extended to a full system of MUBs.

A Walsh-Fourier approach to the circulant Hadamard conjecture
Published • View Publication • BIB
We describe an approach to the circulant Hadamard conjecture based on Walsh-Fourier analysis. We show that the existence of a circulant Hadamard matrix of order $n$ is equivalent to the existence of a non-trivial solution of a certain homogenous linear system of equations. Based on this system, a possible way of proving the conjecture is proposed.

On modular k-free sets
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $n$ and $k$ be integers. A set $A\subset\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$ is $k$-free if for all $x$ in $A$, $kx\notin A$. We determine the maximal cardinality of such a set when $k$ and $n$ are coprime. We also study several particular cases and we propose an efficient algorithm for solving the general case. We finally give the asymptotic behaviour of the minimal size of a $k$-free set in $\left[ 1,n\right]$ which is maximal for inclusion.

A pattern avoidance criterion for free inversion arrangements
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that the hyperplane arrangement of a coconvex set in a finite root system is free if and only if it is free in corank 4. As a consequence, we show that the inversion arrangement of a Weyl group element w is free if and only if w avoids a finite list of root system patterns. As a key part of the proof, we use a recent theorem of Abe and Yoshinaga to show that if the root system does not contain any factors of type C or F, then Peterson translation of coconvex sets preserves freeness. This also allows us to give a Kostant-Shapiro-Steinberg rule for the coexponents of a free inversion arrangement in any type.

A bound for the splitting of smooth Fano polytopes with many vertices
Published • View Publication • BIB
The classification of toric Fano manifolds with large Picard number corresponds to the classification of smooth Fano polytopes with large number of vertices. A smooth Fano polytope is a polytope that contains the origin in its interior such that the vertex set of each facet forms a lattice basis. Casagrande showed that any smooth $d$-dimensional Fano polytope has at most $3d$ vertices. Smooth Fano polytopes in dimension $d$ with at least $3d-2$ vertices are completely known. The main result of this paper deals with the case of $3d-k$ vertices for $k$ fixed and $d$ large. It implies that there is only a finite number of isomorphism classes of toric Fano $d$-folds $X$ (for arbitrary $d$) with Picard number $2d-k$ such that $X$ is not a product of a lower-dimensional toric Fano manifold and the projective plane blown up in three torus-invariant points. This verifies the qualitative part of a conjecture in a recent paper by the first author, Joswig, and Paffenholz.

Few products, many h-fold sums

Improving upon a technique of Croot and Hart, we show that for every $h$, there exists an $ε> 0$ such that if $A \subseteq \mathbb{R}$ is sufficiently large and $|A.A| \le |A|^{1+ε}$, then $|hA| \ge |A|^{Ω(e^{\sqrt{c\log{h}}})}$.
Embeddings and immersions of tropical curves
Published in Collectanea Math. 67:1 (2016) 1-19 • View Publication • BIB
We construct immersions of trivalent abstract tropical curves in the Euclidean plane and embeddings of all abstract tropical curves in higher dimensional Euclidean space. Since not all curves have an embedding in the plane, we define the tropical crossing number of an abstract tropical curve to be the minimum number of self-intersections, counted with multiplicity, over all its immersions in the plane. We show that the tropical crossing number is at most quadratic in the number of edges and this bound is sharp. For curves of genus up to two, we systematically compute the crossing number. Finally, we use our immersed tropical curves to construct totally faithful nodal algebraic curves via lifting results of Mikhalkin and Shustin.

How to repair tropicalizations of plane curves using modifications
Published • View Publication • BIB
Tropical geometry is sensitive to embeddings of algebraic varieties inside toric varieties. The purpose of this paper is to advertise tropical modifications as a tool to locally repair bad embeddings of plane curves, allowing the re-embedded tropical curve to better reflect the geometry of the input curve. Our approach is based on the close connection between analytic curves (in the sense of Berkovich) and tropical curves. We investigate the effect of these tropical modifications on the tropicalization map defined on the analytification of the given curve. Our study is motivated by the case of plane elliptic cubics, where good embeddings are characterized in terms of the j-invariant. Given a plane elliptic cubic whose tropicalization contains a cycle, we present an effective algorithm, based on non-Archimedean methods, to linearly re-embed the curve in dimension 4 so that its tropicalization reflects the j-invariant. We give an alternative elementary proof of this result by interpreting the initial terms of the A-discriminant of the defining equation as a local discriminant in the Newton subdivision.

The exterior splash in PG(6,q): Transversals
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $π$ be an order-$q$-subplane of $PG(2,q^3)$ that is exterior to $\ell_\infty$. Then the exterior splash of $π$ is the set of $q^2+q+1$ points on $\ell_\infty$ that lie on an extended line of $π$. Exterior splashes are projectively equivalent to scattered linear sets of rank 3, covers of the circle geometry $CG(3,q)$, and hyper-reguli in $PG(5,q)$. In this article we use the Bruck-Bose representation in $PG(6,q)$ to investigate the structure of $π$, and the interaction between $π$ and its exterior splash. In $PG(6,q)$, an exterior splash $\mathbb S$ has two sets of cover planes (which are hyper-reguli) and we show that each set has three unique transversals lines in the cubic extension $PG(6,q^3)$. These transversal lines are used to characterise the carriers of $\mathbb S$, and to characterise the sublines of $\mathbb S$.

Hyper-reguli in PG(5,q)

A simple counting argument is used to show that for all $q$, an André hyper-regulus $\mathbb X$ in $PG(5,q)$ has exactly two switching sets. Moreover, there are exactly $2(q^2+q+1)$ planes in $PG(5,q)$ that meet every plane of $\mathbb X$ in a point, namely the planes in the switching sets.

On spectral properties for graph matching and graph isomorphism problems
Published • View Publication • BIB
Problems related to graph matching and isomorphisms are very important both from a theoretical and practical perspective, with applications ranging from image and video analysis to biological and biomedical problems. The graph matching problem is challenging from a computational point of view, and therefore different relaxations are commonly used. Although common relaxations techniques tend to work well for matching perfectly isomorphic graphs, it is not yet fully understood under which conditions the relaxed problem is guaranteed to obtain the correct answer. In this paper we prove that the graph matching problem and its most common convex relaxation, where the matching domain of permutation matrices is substituted with its convex hull of doubly-stochastic matrices, are equivalent for a certain class of graphs, such equivalence being based on spectral properties of the corresponding adjacency matrices. We also derive results about the automorphism group of a graph, and provide fundamental spectral properties of the adjacency matrix.

The Treewidth of Line Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The treewidth of a graph is an important invariant in structural and algorithmic graph theory. This paper studies the treewidth of line graphs. We show that determining the treewidth of the line graph of a graph $G$ is equivalent to determining the minimum vertex congestion of an embedding of $G$ into a tree. Using this result, we prove sharp lower bounds in terms of both the minimum degree and average degree of $G$. These results are precise enough to exactly determine the treewidth of the line graph of a complete graph and other interesting examples. We also improve the best known upper bound on the treewidth of a line graph. Analogous results are proved for pathwidth.

The $T_{4}$ and $G_{4}$ constructions of Costas arrays
We examine two particular constructions of Costas arrays known as the Taylor variant of the Lempel construction, or the $T_{4}$ construction, and the variant of the Golomb construction, or the $G_{4}$ construction. We connect these constructions with the concept of Fibonacci primitive roots, and show that under the Extended Riemann Hypothesis the $T_{4}$ and $G_{4}$ constructions are valid infinitely often.
Toric origami structures on quasitoric manifolds
Published in Proc. Steklov Inst. Math., Vol.288(1), 2015, pp.10-28 • View Publication • BIB
We construct quasitoric manifolds of dimension 6 and higher which are not equivariantly homeomorphic to any toric origami manifold. All necessary topological definitions and combinatorial constructions are given and the statement is reformulated in discrete geometrical terms. The problem reduces to existence of planar triangulations with certain coloring and metric properties.

Improved algorithms for colorings of simple hypergraphs and applications
Published • View Publication • BIB
The paper deals with extremal problems concerning colorings of hypergraphs. By using a random recoloring algorithm we show that any $n$-uniform simple (i.e. every two distinct edges share at most one vertex) hypergraph $H$ with maximum edge degree at most \[ Δ(H)\leq c\cdot nr^{n-1}, \] is $r$-colorable, where $c>0$ is an absolute constant. %We prove also that similar result holds for $b$-simple hypergraphs. As an application of our proof technique we establish a new lower bound for Van der Waerden number $W(n,r)$, the minimum $N$ such that in any $r$-coloring of the set $\{1,...,N\}$ there exists a monochromatic arithmetic progression of length $n$. We show that \[ W(n,r)>c\cdot r^{n-1}, \] for some absolute constant $c>0$.

Some New Results in the Alcuin Number of Graphs
We prove some results concerning Alcuin number of graphs. First, we classify graphs which have unique minimum vertex cover. Then we present two necessary conditions for a graph to be of class two and show why one of them (condition on common neighbors) is sufficient as well. By using this classification theorem, we prove some results about class one and class two graphs such as cartesian product of graphs and classification of regular graphs.

Distinct monomial orders with same induced orderings
We prove that the lexicographic, degree lexicographic and the degree reverse lexicographic orders for monomials in $R_n=K[X_1,...X_n]$ are uniquely determined by their induced orderings, (i.e. their restrictions to $R_{n,i}=K[X_1,..., \hat{X_i}, .., X_n]$), when $n \geq 4$. We also show that for any $n \geq 4$ there are monomial orders that are not uniquely determined by their induced orderings, and provide examples of these orders for each $n$.
