Shortest Paths in Nearly Conservative Digraphs
We introduce the following notion: a digraph $D=(V,A)$ with arc weights $c: A\rightarrow \R$ is called nearly conservative if every negative cycle consists of two arcs. Computing shortest paths in nearly conservative digraphs is NP-hard, and even deciding whether a digraph is nearly conservative is coNP-complete. We show that the "All Pairs Shortest Path" problem is fixed parameter tractable with various parameters for nearly conservative digraphs. The results also apply for the special case of conservative mixed graphs.

The number of simultaneous core partitions
Amdeberhan conjectured that the number of $(t,t+1, t+2)$-core partitions is $\sum_{0\leq k\leq [\frac{t}{2}]}\frac{1}{k+1}\binom{t}{2k}\binom{2k}{k}$. In this paper, we obtain the generating function of the numbers $f_t$ of $(t, t + 1, ..., t + p)$-core partitions. In particular, this verifies that Amdeberhan's conjecture is true. We also prove that the number of $(t_1,t_2,..., t_m)$-core partitions is finite if and only if gcd$(t_1,t_2,..., t_m)=1,$ which extends Anderson's result on the finiteness of the number of $(t_1,t_2)$-core partitions for coprime positive integers $t_1$ and $t_2$ and thus rediscover a result of Keith and Nath with a different proof.

Positive expressions for skew divided difference operators
Published • View Publication • BIB
For permutations $v,w \in \mathfrak S_n$, Macdonald defines the skew divided difference operators $\partial_{w/v}$ as the unique linear operators satisfying $\partial_w(PQ) = \sum_v v(\partial_{w/v}P) \cdot \partial_vQ$ for all polynomials $P$ and $Q$. We prove that $\partial_{w/v}$ has a positive expression in terms of divided difference operators $\partial_{ij}$ for $i<j$. In fact, we prove that the analogous result holds in the Fomin-Kirillov algebra $\mathcal E_n$, which settles a conjecture of Kirillov.

Fragmentation of Random Trees
Published in J. Phys. A 48, 045001 (2015) • View Publication • BIB
We study fragmentation of a random recursive tree into a forest by repeated removal of nodes. The initial tree consists of N nodes and it is generated by sequential addition of nodes with each new node attaching to a randomly-selected existing node. As nodes are removed from the tree, one at a time, the tree dissolves into an ensemble of separate trees, namely, a forest. We study statistical properties of trees and nodes in this heterogeneous forest, and find that the fraction of remaining nodes m characterizes the system in the limit N --> infty. We obtain analytically the size density phi_s of trees of size s. The size density has power-law tail phi_s ~ s^(-alpha) with exponent alpha=1+1/m. Therefore, the tail becomes steeper as further nodes are removed, and the fragmentation process is unusual in that exponent alpha increases continuously with time. We also extend our analysis to the case where nodes are added as well as removed, and obtain the asymptotic size density for growing trees.
Colored compositions, Invert operator and elegant compositions with the "black tie"
Published in Discrete Mathematics, Vol. 335, 1-7, 2014 • View Publication • BIB
This paper shows how the study of colored compositions of integers reveals some unexpected and original connection with the Invert operator. The Invert operator becomes an important tool to solve the problem of directly counting the number of colored compositions for any coloration. The interesting consequences arising from this relationship also give an immediate and simple criterion to determine whether a sequence of integers counts the number of some colored compositions. Applications to Catalan and Fibonacci numbers naturally emerge, allowing to clearly answer to some open questions. Moreover, the definition of colored compositions with the "black tie" provides straightforward combinatorial proofs to a new identity involving multinomial coefficients and to a new closed formula for the Invert operator. Finally, colored compositions with the "black tie" give rise to a new combinatorial interpretation for the convolution operator, and to a new and easy method to count the number of parts of colored compositions.

Noncrossing partitions, fully commutative elements and bases of the Temperley-Lieb algebra
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a new basis of the Temperley-Lieb algebra. It is defined using a bijection between noncrossing partitions and fully commutative elements together with a basis introduced by Zinno, which is obtained by mapping the simple elements of the Birman-Ko-Lee braid monoid to the Temperley-Lieb algebra. The combinatorics of the new basis involve the Bruhat order restricted to noncrossing partitions. As an application we can derive properties of the coefficients of the base change matrix between Zinno's basis and the well-known diagram or Kazhdan-Lusztig basis of the Temperley-Lieb algebra. In particular, we give closed formulas for some of the coefficients of the expansion of an element of the diagram basis in the Zinno basis.

In this paper, we establish a connection between the 1/k-Eulerian polynomials introduced by Savage and Viswanathan (Electron. J. Combin. 19(2012), P9) and k-Stirling permutations. We also introduce the dual set of Stirling permutations.

Compositional inverses, complete mappings, orthogonal Latin squares and bent functions
We study compositional inverses of permutation polynomials, complete mappings, mutually orthogonal Latin squares, and bent vectorial functions. Recently it was obtained in [33] the compositional inverses of linearized permutation binomials over finite fields. It was also noted in [29] that computing inverses of bijections of subspaces have applications in determining the compositional inverses of certain permutation classes related to linearized polynomials. In this paper we obtain compositional inverses of a class of linearized binomials permuting the kernel of the trace map. As an application of this result, we give the compositional inverse of a class of complete mappings. This complete mapping class improves upon a recent construction given in [34]. We also construct recursively a class of complete mappings involving multi-trace functions. Finally we use these complete mappings to derive a set of mutually orthogonal Latin squares, and to construct a class of $p$-ary bent vectorial functions from the Maiorana-McFarland class.

The Jones polynomials of 3-bridge knots via Chebyshev knots and billiard table diagrams
Published • View Publication • BIB
This work presents formulas for the Kauffman bracket and Jones polynomials of 3-bridge knots using the structure of Chebyshev knots and their billiard table diagrams. In particular, these give far fewer terms than in the Skein relation expansion. The subject is introduced by considering the easier case of 2-bridge knots, where some geometric interpretation is provided, as well, via combinatorial tiling problems.

Infinite trees of matroids
We generalise the construction of infinite matroids from trees of matroids to allow the matroids at the nodes, as well as the field over which they are represented, to be infinite.

All graphs have tree-decompositions displaying their topological ends

We show that every connected graph has a spanning tree that displays all its topological ends. This proves a 1964 conjecture of Halin in corrected form, and settles a problem of Diestel from 1992.
Connectivity of pseudomanifold graphs from an algebraic point of view
Published • View Publication • BIB
The connectivity of graphs of simplicial and polytopal complexes is a classical subject going back at least to Steinitz, and the topic has since been studied by many authors, including Balinski, Barnette, Athanasiadis and Bjorner. In this note, we provide a unifying approach which allows us to obtain more general results. Moreover, we provide a relation to commutative algebra by relating connectivity problems to graded Betti numbers of the associated Stanley--Reisner rings.
K-Knuth Equivalence for Increasing Tableaux
Published in Elec. J. of Combin., Vol. 23(1) (2016), #P1.40 • View Publication • BIB
A K-theoretic analogue of RSK insertion and Knuth equivalence relations was first introduced in 2006 by Buch, Kresch, Shimozono, Tamvakis, and Yong. The resulting K-Knuth equivalence relations on words and increasing tableaux on [n] has prompted investigation into the equivalence classes of tableaux arising from these relations. Of particular interest are the tableaux that are unique in their class, which we refer to as unique rectification targets (URTs). In this paper we give several new families of URTs and a bound on the length of intermediate words connecting two K-Knuth equivalent words. In addition, we describe an algorithm to determine if two words are K-Knuth equivalent and to compute all K-Knuth equivalence classes of tableaux on [n].

Signatures of representations of Hecke algebras and rational Cherednik algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
Determining whether an irreducible representation of a group (or $*$-algebra) admits a non-degenerate invariant, positive-definite Hermitian form is an important problem in representation theory. In this paper, we study a related notion: that of signatures. We study representations $S^λ(q)$ of $\mathcal{H}_{n}(q)$, the Hecke algebra of type $A$ ($|q| = 1$), and representations $M_{c}(λ)$ of $\mathbb{H}_{c}$, the rational Cherednik algebra of type $A$ ($c \in \mathbb{R}$), which have unique (up to scaling) invariant Hermitian forms (here $λ$ is a partition of $n$). The signature is the number of elements with positive norm minus the number of elements with negative norm, and we analogously define the signature character in the case that there is a natural grading on the module. We provide formulas for (1) signatures of modules over $\mathcal{H}_{n}(q)$ and (2) signature characters of modules over $\mathbb{H}_{c}$. We study the limit $c \rightarrow -\infty$, in which case the signature character has a simpler form in terms of inversions and descents of permutations in $S(n)$. We provide examples corresponding to some special shapes, and small values of $n$. Finally, when $q = e^{2 πi c}$, we show that the asymptotic signature character of the $\mathbb{H}_{c}$-module $M_{c}(τ)$ is the signature of the $\mathcal{H}_{n}(q)$-module $S^τ(q)$.

Conjugacy and Iteration of Standard Interval Rank in Finite Ordered Sets
In order theory, a rank function measures the vertical "level" of a poset element. It is an integer-valued function on a poset which increments with the covering relation, and is only available on a graded poset. Defining a vertical measure to an arbitrary finite poset can be accomplished by extending a rank function to be interval-valued. This establishes an order homomorphism from a base poset to a poset over real intervals, and a standard (canonical) specific interval rank function is available as an extreme case. Various ordering relations are available over intervals, and we begin in this paper by considering conjugate orders which "partition" the space of pairwise comparisons of order elements. For us, these elements are real intervals, and we consider the weak and subset interval orders as (near) conjugates. It is also natural to ask about interval rank functions applied reflexively on whatever poset of intervals we have chosen, and thereby a general iterative strategy for interval ranks. We explore the convergence properties of standard and conjugate interval ranks, and conclude with a discussion of the experimental mathematics needed to support this work.

Lattice 3-polytopes with few lattice points
Published in SIAM J. Discrete Math. 30(2) (2016), 669-686 • View Publication • BIB
We extend White's classification of empty tetrahedra to the complete classification of lattice $3$-polytopes with five lattice points, showing that, apart from infinitely many of width one, there are exactly nine equivalence classes of them with width two and none of larger width. We also prove that, for each $n\in \mathbb{N}$, there is only a finite number of (classes of) lattice $3$-polytopes with $n$ lattice points and of width larger than one. This implies that extending the present classification to larger sizes makes sense, which is the topic of subsequent papers of ours.

Quadratic-linear duality and rational homotopy theory of chordal arrangements
Published in Algebr. Geom. Topol. 16 (2016) 2637-2661 • View Publication • BIB
To any graph and smooth algebraic curve $C$ one may associate a "hypercurve" arrangement and one can study the rational homotopy theory of the complement $X$. In the rational case ($C=\mathbb{C}$), there is considerable literature on the rational homotopy theory of $X$, and the trigonometric case ($C = \mathbb{C}^\times$) is similar in flavor. The case of when $C$ is a smooth projective curve of positive genus is more complicated due to the lack of formality of the complement. When the graph is chordal, we use quadratic-linear duality to compute the Malcev Lie algebra and the minimal model of $X$, and we prove that $X$ is rationally $K(π,1)$.

Edge-connectivity in regular multigraphs from eigenvalues
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a $d$-regular multigraph, and let $λ_2(G)$ be the second largest eigenvalue of $G$. In this paper, we prove that if $λ_2(G) < \frac{d-1+\sqrt{9d^2-10d+17}}4$, then $G$ is 2-edge-connected. Furthermore, for $t\ge2$ we show that $G$ is $(t+1)$-edge-connected when $λ_2(G)<d-t$, and in fact when $λ_2(G)<d-t+1$ if $t$ is odd.

A Simplicial Tutte "5"-flow Conjecture
This paper concerns a generalization of nowhere-zero modular q-flows from graphs to simplicial complexes of dimension d greater than 1. A modular q-flow of a simplicial complex is an element of the kernel of the d-th boundary map with coefficients in Z/qZ; it is called nowhere-zero if it is not zero restricted to any of the facets of the complex. Briefly noting connections to other invariants of simplicial complexes, this paper provides a generalization of Tutte's 5-flow conjecture, which claims the universal existence of a 5-flow for all bridgeless graphs. Once phrased, this paper concludes with bounds on what "5" ought to be for simplicial complexes of dimension d: proving a lower bound linear in d and a partial upper bound exponential in d.
