Lower bounds for algebraic connectivity of graphs in terms of matching number or edge covering number
Published in ARS COMBINATORIA, 2016, 125: 361-370 • Search Publication
In this paper we characterize the unique graph whose algebraic connectivity is minimum among all connected graphs with given order and fixed matching number or edge covering number, and present two lower bounds for the algebraic connectivity in terms of the matching number or edge covering number.

The generalized 3-edge-connectivity of lexicographic product graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The generalized $k$-edge-connectivity $λ_k(G)$ of a graph $G$ is a generalization of the concept of edge-connectivity. The lexicographic product of two graphs $G$ and $H$, denoted by $G\circ H$, is an important graph product. In this paper, we mainly study the generalized 3-edge-connectivity of $G \circ H$, and get upper and lower bounds of $λ_3(G \circ H)$. Moreover, all bounds are sharp.

Higher Dimensional Discrete Cheeger Inequalities
Published • View Publication • BIB
For graphs there exists a strong connection between spectral and combinatorial expansion properties. This is expressed, e.g., by the discrete Cheeger inequality, the lower bound of which states that $λ(G) \leq h(G)$, where $λ(G)$ is the second smallest eigenvalue of the Laplacian of a graph $G$ and $h(G)$ is the Cheeger constant measuring the edge expansion of $G$. We are interested in generalizations of expansion properties to finite simplicial complexes of higher dimension (or uniform hypergraphs). Whereas higher dimensional Laplacians were introduced already in 1945 by Eckmann, the generalization of edge expansion to simplicial complexes is not straightforward. Recently, a topologically motivated notion analogous to edge expansion that is based on $\mathbb{Z}_2$-cohomology was introduced by Gromov and independently by Linial, Meshulam and Wallach. It is known that for this generalization there is no higher dimensional analogue of the lower bound of the Cheeger inequality. A different, combinatorially motivated generalization of the Cheeger constant, denoted by $h(X)$, was studied by Parzanchevski, Rosenthal and Tessler. They showed that indeed $λ(X) \leq h(X)$, where $λ(X)$ is the smallest non-trivial eigenvalue of the ($(k-1)$-dimensional upper) Laplacian, for the case of $k$-dimensional simplicial complexes $X$ with complete $(k-1)$-skeleton. Whether this inequality also holds for $k$-dimensional complexes with non-complete $(k-1)$-skeleton has been an open question. We give two proofs of the inequality for arbitrary complexes. The proofs differ strongly in the methods and structures employed, and each allows for a different kind of additional strengthening of the original result.

Connected graphs cospectral with a Friendship graph
Let $n$ be any positive integer, the friendship graph $F_n$ consist of $n$ edge-disjoint triangles that all of them meeting in one vertex. A graph $G$ is called cospectral with a graph $H$ if their adjacency matrices have the same eigenvalues. Recently in [http://arxiv.org/pdf/1310.6529v1.pdf] it is proved that if $G$ is any graph cospectral with $F_n$ $(n\neq 16)$, then $G\cong F_n$. In this note, we give a proof of special case of the latter: Any connected graph cospectral with $F_n$ is isomorphic to $F_n$. Our proof is independent of ones given in [http://arxiv.org/pdf/1310.6529v1.pdf] and the proofs are based on our recent results given in [Trans. Com., 2 no. 4 (2013) 37-52.] Using an upper bound for the largest eigenvalue of a connected graph given in [J. Combinatorial Theory, Ser. B, 81 (2001) 177-183.].

An Elias Bound on the Bhattacharyya Distance of Codes for Channels with a Zero-Error Capacity
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we propose an upper bound on the minimum Bhattacharyya distance of codes for channels with a zero-error capacity. The bound is obtained by combining an extension of the Elias bound introduced by Blahut, with an extension of a bound previously introduced by the author, which builds upon ideas of Gallager, Lovász and Marton.

Descents of $λ$-unimodal cycles in a character formula
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove an identity conjectured by Adin and Roichman involving the descent set of $λ$-unimodal cyclic permutations. These permutations appear in formulas for characters of certain representations of the symmetric group. Such formulas have previously been proven algebraically. In this paper, we present a combinatorial proof for one such formula and discuss the consequences for the distribution of the descent set on cyclic permutations.

Median eigenvalues and the HOMO-LUMO index of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Motivated by the problem about HOMO-LUMO separation that arises in mathematical chemistry, Fowler and Pisanski introduced the notion of the HL-index which measures how large in absolute value may be the median eigenvalues of a graph. In this note we provide rather tight lower and upper bounds on the maximum value of the HL-index among all graphs with given average degree. In particular, we determine the exact value of this parameter when restricted to chemically relevant graphs, i.e.\ graphs of maximum degree $3$, and thus answer a question of Fowler and Pisanski. The proof provides additional insight about eigenvalue distribution of large subcubic graphs.

Homological face-width condition forcing $K_6$-minors in graphs on surfaces
Published • View Publication • BIB
It is proved that every graph embedded on a (non-spherical) surface with non-separating face-width at least $7$ contains a minor isomorphic to $K_6$. It is also shown that face-width four yields the same conclusion for graphs on the projective plane.

Incidence theory and restriction estimates
We investigate the interplay between the discrete restriction phenomenon and incidence theory. Two angles are explored. One is a refinement of the machinery developed by Thomas Wolff, which when combined with a recent subcritical estimate of Bourgain leads to new Strichartz estimates for irrational tori. The other one connects various additive energies with the Szemerédi-Trotter Theorem. The combination of the two approaches recovers the best known Strichartz estimates for the classical torus in dimensions $n\ge 3$, without any appeal to number theory.

Normal Edge-Transitive Cayley Graphs of Frobenius Groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
A Cayley Graph for a group $G$ is called normal edge-transitive if it admits an edge-transitive action of some subgroup of the Holomorph of $G$ (the normaliser of a regular copy of $G$ in $\operatorname{Sym}(G)$). We complete the classification of normal edge-transitive Cayley graphs of order a product of two primes by dealing with Cayley graphs for Frobenius groups of such orders. We determine the automorphism groups of these graphs, proving in particular that there is a unique vertex-primitive example, namely the flag graph of the Fano plane.

Constrained colouring and $σ$-hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A constrained colouring or, more specifically, an $(α,β)$-colouring of a hypergraph $H$, is an assignment of colours to its vertices such that no edge of $H$ contains less than $α$ or more than $β$ vertices with different colours. This notion, introduced by B{ú}jtas and Tuza, generalises both classical hypergraph colourings and the more general Voloshin colourings of hypergraphs. In fact, for $r$-uniform hypergraphs, classical colourings correspond to $(2,r)$-colourings while an important instance of Voloshin colourings of $r$-uniform hypergraphs gives $(2, r-1)$-colourings. One intriguing aspect of all these colourings, not present in classical colourings, is that $H$ can have gaps in its $(α,β)$-spectrum, that is, for $k_1 < k_2 < k_3$, $H$ would be $(α,β)$-colourable using $k_1$ and using $k_3$ colours, but not using $k_2$ colours. In an earlier paper, the first two authors introduced, for $σ$ a partition of $r$, a very versatile type of $r$-uniform hypergraph which they called $σ$-hypergraphs. They showed that, by simple manipulation of the parameters of a $σ$-hypergraph $H$, one can obtain families of hypergraphs which have $(2,r-1)$-colourings exhibiting various interesting chromatic properties. They also showed that, if the smallest part of $σ$ is at least 2, then $H$ will never have a gap in its $(2,r-1)$-spectrum but, quite surprisingly, they found examples where gaps re-appear when $α=β=2$. In this paper we extend many of the results of the first two authors to more general $(α,β)$-colourings, and we study the phenomenon of the disappearanace and re-appearance of gaps and show that it is not just the behaviour of a particular example but we place it within the context of a more general study of constrained colourings of $σ$-hypergraphs.

Graphs that allow all the eigenvalue multiplicities to be even
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be an undirected graph on $n$ vertices and let $S(G)$ be the set of all $n \times n$ real symmetric matrices whose nonzero off-diagonal entries occur in exactly the positions corresponding to the edges of $G$. The inverse eigenvalue problem for a graph $G$ is a problem of determining all possible lists that can occur as the lists of eigenvalues of matrices in $S(G).$ This question is, in general, hard to answer and several variations were studied, most notably the minimum rank problem. In this paper we introduce the problem of determining for which graphs $G$ there exists a matrix in $S(G)$ whose characteristic polynomial is a square, i.e. the multiplicities of all its eigenvalues are even. We solve this question for several families of graphs.

What is a horocyclic product, and how is it related to lamplighters?
Published in Internationale Mathematische Nachrichten (Austrian Math. Society) 224 (2013), 1-27 • Search Publication
This is a rather personal introductory outline of an interesting class of geometric, resp. graph- and group-theoretical structures. After an introductive section about their genesis, the general construction of horocyclic products is presented. Three closely related basic structures of this type are explained in more detail: Diestel-Leader graphs, treebolic spaces, and Sol-groups, resp. -manifolds. Emphasis is on their geometry, isometry groups, quasi-isometry classification and boundary at infinity. Subsequently, it is clarified under which parametrisation they admit discrete groups of isometries acting with compact quotient. Finally, further develpoments are reviewed briefly. Remark: the posted version contains a correction of a misprint that appeared on the bottom of page 22 in the version which appeared in IMN.

On The Equality Of The Grundy Numbers Of A Graph
Published in International Journal of Next-Generation Networks (IJNGN) Vol.5, No.4, December 2013 • View Publication • BIB
Our work becomes integrated into the general problem of the stability of the network ad hoc. Some, works attacked this problem. Among these works, we find the modelling of the network ad hoc in the form of a graph. Thus the problem of stability of the network ad hoc which corresponds to a problem of allocation of frequency amounts to a problem of allocation of colors in the vertex of graph. we present use a parameter of coloring the number of Grundy. The Grundy number of a graph G, denoted by (G), is the largest k such that G has a greedy k-coloring, that is a coloring with colours obtained by applying the greedy algorithm according to some ordering of the vertices of G. In this paper, we study the Grundy number of the lexicographic, Cartesian and direct products of two graphs in terms of the Grundy numbers of these graphs.
Operads, quasiorders, and regular languages
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics, 75, 56--93, 2016 • View Publication • BIB
We generalize the construction of multitildes in the aim to provide multitilde operators for regular languages. We show that the underliying algebraic structure involves the action of some operads. An operad is an algebraic structure that mimics the composition of the functions. The involved operads are described in terms of combinatorial objects. These operads are obtained from more primitive objects, namely precompositions, whose algebraic counter-parts are investigated. One of these operads acts faithfully on languages in the sense that two different operators act in two different ways.

The completion of optimal $(3,4)$-packings
Published • View Publication • BIB
A 3-$(n,4,1)$ packing design consists of an $n$-element set $X$ and a collection of $4$-element subsets of $X$, called {\it blocks}, such that every $3$-element subset of $X$ is contained in at most one block. The packing number of quadruples $d(3,4,n)$ denotes the number of blocks in a maximum $3$-$(n,4,1)$ packing design, which is also the maximum number $A(n,4,4)$ of codewords in a code of length $n$, constant weight $4$, and minimum Hamming distance 4. In this paper the undecided 21 packing numbers $A(n,4,4)$ are shown to be equal to Johnson bound $J(n,4,4)$ $( =\lfloor\frac{n}{4}\lfloor\frac{n-1}{3}\lfloor\frac{n-2}{2}\rfloor\rfloor\rfloor)$ where $n=6k+5$, $k\in \{m:\ m$ is odd, $3\leq m\leq 35,\ m\neq 17,21\}\cup \{45,47,75,77,79,159\}$.

On the Nearest Neighbor Rule for the Metric Traveling Salesman Problem
Published • View Publication • BIB
We present a very simple family of traveling salesman instances with $n$ cities where the nearest neighbor rule may produce a tour that is $Θ(\log n)$ times longer than an optimum solution. Our family works for the graphic, the euclidean, and the rectilinear traveling salesman problem at the same time. It improves the so far best known lower bound in the euclidean case and proves for the first time a lower bound in the rectilinear case.

On Forbidden Submatrices
Given a $k\times l$ $(0,1)$-matrix $F$, we denote by $\mathrm{fs}(m,F)$ the largest number for which there is an $m \times \mathrm{fs}(m,F)$ $(0,1)$-matrix with no repeated columns and no induced submatrix equal to $F$. A conjecture of Anstee, Frankl, Füredi and Pach states that $\mathrm{fs}(m,F) = O(m^k)$ for a fixed matrix $F$. The main results of this paper are that $\mathrm{fs}(m,F) = m^{2+ o(1)}$ if $k=2$ and that $\mathrm{fs}(m,F) = m^{5k/3 -1 + o(1)}$ if $k\geq 3$.

The Merrifield-Simmons conjecture also holds for parity graphs
The Merrifield-Simmons conjectures states a relation between the distance of vertices in a simple graph $G$ and the number of independent sets, denoted as $σ(G)$, in vertex-deleted subgraphs. Namely, that the sign of the term $σ(G_{-u}) \cdot σ(G_{-v}) - σ(G) \cdot σ(G_{-u-v})$ only depends on the parity of the distance of $u$ and $v$ in $G$. We prove this statement in the case of parity graphs and give some evidence that this result may not be further generalized to other classes of graphs.
