Toda Equations and Piecewise Polynomiality for Mixed Double Hurwitz Numbers
Published in SIGMA 12 (2016), 040, 10 pages • View Publication • BIB
This article introduces mixed double Hurwitz numbers, which interpolate combinatorially between the classical double Hurwitz numbers studied by Okounkov and the monotone double Hurwitz numbers introduced recently by Goulden, Guay-Paquet and Novak. Generalizing a result of Okounkov, we prove that a certain generating series for the mixed double Hurwitz numbers solves the 2-Toda hierarchy of partial differential equations. We also prove that the mixed double Hurwitz numbers are piecewise polynomial, thereby generalizing a result of Goulden, Jackson and Vakil.
Characterizing [h,2,1] graphs by minimal forbidden induced subgraphs
An undirected graph G is called a VPT graph if it is the vertex intersection graph of a family of paths in a tree. The class of graphs which admit a VPT representation in a host tree with maximum degree at most h is denoted by [h,2,1]. The classes [h,2,1] are closed by taking induced subgraphs, therefore each one can be characterized by a family of minimal forbidden induced subgraphs. In this paper we associate the minimal forbidden induced subgraphs for [h,2,1] which are VPT with (color) h-critical graphs. We describe how to obtain minimal forbidden induced subgraphs from critical graphs, even more, we show that the family of graphs obtained using our procedure is exactly the family of VPT minimal forbidden induced subgraphs for [h,2,1]. The members of this family together with the minimal forbidden induced subgraphs for VPT, are the minimal forbidden induced subgraphs for [h,2,1], with $h\geq 3$. Notice that by taking h=3 we obtain a characterization by minimal forbidden induced subgraphs of the class VPT $\cap$ EPT=EPT $\cap$ Chordal=[3,2,2]=[3,2,1].

A note on the discrepancy of matrices with bounded row and column sums
Published • View Publication • BIB
A folklore result uses the Lovasz local lemma to analyze the discrepancy of hypergraphs with bounded degree and edge size. We generalize this result to the context of real matrices with bounded row and column sums.

Structure of the rational monoid algebra for Boolean matrices of order 3
Published • View Publication • BIB
We use computer algebra to study the 512-dimensional associative algebra Q B_3, the rational monoid algebra of 3 x 3 Boolean matrices. We obtain a basis for the radical in bijection with the 42 non-regular elements of B_3. The center of the 470-dimensional semisimple quotient has dimension 14; we use a splitting algorithm to find a basis of orthogonal primitive idempotents. We show that the semisimple quotient is the direct sum of simple two-sided ideals isomorphic to d x d rational matrix algebras for d = 1, 1, 1, 2, 3, 3, 3, 3, 6, 6, 7, 9, 9, 12. We construct the irreducible representations of B_3 over Q by calculating the representation matrices for a minimal set of generators.

Zero forcing for sign patterns
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a new variant of zero forcing - signed zero forcing. The classical zero forcing number provides an upper bound on the maximum nullity of a matrix with a given graph (i.e. zero-nonzero pattern). Our new variant provides an analo- gous bound for the maximum nullity of a matrix with a given sign pattern. This allows us to compute, for instance, the maximum nullity of a Z-matrix whose graph is L(K_{n}), the line graph of a clique.

Pipage Rounding, Pessimistic Estimators and Matrix Concentration
Published • View Publication • BIB
Pipage rounding is a dependent random sampling technique that has several interesting properties and diverse applications. One property that has been particularly useful is negative correlation of the resulting vector. Unfortunately negative correlation has its limitations, and there are some further desirable properties that do not seem to follow from existing techniques. In particular, recent concentration results for sums of independent random matrices are not known to extend to a negatively dependent setting. We introduce a simple but useful technique called concavity of pessimistic estimators. This technique allows us to show concentration of submodular functions and concentration of matrix sums under pipage rounding. The former result answers a question of Chekuri et al. (2009). To prove the latter result, we derive a new variant of Lieb's celebrated concavity theorem in matrix analysis. We provide numerous applications of these results. One is to spectrally-thin trees, a spectral analog of the thin trees that played a crucial role in the recent breakthrough on the asymmetric traveling salesman problem. We show a polynomial time algorithm that, given a graph where every edge has effective conductance at least $κ$, returns an $O(κ^{-1} \cdot \log n / \log \log n)$-spectrally-thin tree. There are further applications to rounding of semidefinite programs, to the column subset selection problem, and to a geometric question of extracting a nearly-orthonormal basis from an isotropic distribution.

Vertex-Coloring Edge-Weighting of Bipartite Graphs with Two Edge Weights
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a graph and $\mathcal {S}$ be a subset of $Z$. A vertex-coloring $\mathcal {S}$-edge-weighting of $G$ is an assignment of weight $s$ by the elements of $\mathcal {S}$ to each edge of $G$ so that adjacent vertices have different sums of incident edges weights. It was proved that every 3-connected bipartite graph admits a vertex-coloring $\{1,2\}$-edge-weighting (Lu, Yu and Zhang, (2011) \cite{LYZ}). In this paper, we show that the following result: if a 3-edge-connected bipartite graph $G$ with minimum degree $δ$ contains a vertex $u\in V(G)$ such that $d_G(u)=δ$ and $G-u$ is connected, then $G$ admits a vertex-coloring $\mathcal {S}$-edge-weighting for $\mathcal {S}\in \{\{0,1\},\{1,2\}\}$. In particular, we show that every 2-connected and 3-edge-connected bipartite graph admits a vertex-coloring $\mathcal {S}$-edge-weighting for $\mathcal {S}\in \{\{0,1\},\{1,2\}\}$. The bound is sharp, since there exists a family of infinite bipartite graphs which are 2-connected and do not admit vertex-coloring $\{1,2\}$-edge-weightings or vertex-coloring $\{0,1\}$-edge-weightings.

Estimates on the number of partially ordered sets
Published • View Publication • BIB
Partially ordered sets of type (k, n) are the sets such that a) cardinality of each set is n, b) dimension of each set is two, c) length of the maximal antichain in each set is k. Let α_k(n) be the number of partially ordered sets of type (k, n). We prove that α_k(n)<min{k^{2n}/((k!)^2), (n-k+1)^{2n}/(((n-k)!)^2)}. Denote by ξ_k(n) the number of permutations from S_n such that the maximal decreasing chain of such permutation has length k. We prove that ξ_k(n)<k^{2n}/(((k-1)!)^2). We survey connections among the pairs of linear orders, the pairs Young diagrams, two-dimensional arrays of positive integers and matrices of nonnegative integers. This survey is based on papers of Schensted and Knuth. We show the generating function of ξ_k(n). It was obtained by Gessen in 1990.

Homology of analogues of Heisenberg Lie algebras
Published in Math. Res. Lett. 22 (2015), no. 4, 1223-1241 • View Publication • BIB
We calculate the homology of three families of 2-step nilpotent Lie (super)algebras associated with the symplectic, orthogonal, and general linear groups. The symplectic case was considered by Getzler and the main motivation for this work was to complete the calculations started by him. In all three cases, these algebras can be realized as the nilpotent radical of a parabolic subalgebra of a simple Lie algebra, and our first approach relies on a theorem of Kostant, but is otherwise elementary and involves combinatorics of Weyl groups and partitions which may be of independent interest. Our second approach is an application of (un)stable representation theory of the classical groups in the sense of recent joint work of the author with Snowden, which is shorter and more conceptual.

Schur's partition theorem and mixed mock modular forms
We study families of partitions with gap conditions that were introduced by Schur and Andrews, and describe their fundamental connections to combinatorial q-series and automorphic forms. In particular, we show that the generating functions for these families naturally lead to deep identities for theta functions and Hickerson's universal mock theta function, which provides a very general answer to Andrews' Conjecture on the modularity of the Schur-type generating function. Furthermore, we also complete the second part of Andrews' speculation by determining the asymptotic behavior of these functions. In particular, we use Wright's Circle Method in order to prove families of asymptotic inequalities in the spirit of the Alder-Andrews Conjecture. As a final application, we prove the striking result that the universal mock theta function can be expressed as a conditional probability in a certain natural probability space with an infinite sequence of independent events.

New results on word-representable graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph $G=(V,E)$ is word-representable if there exists a word $w$ over the alphabet $V$ such that letters $x$ and $y$ alternate in $w$ if and only if $(x,y)\in E$ for each $x\neq y$. The set of word-representable graphs generalizes several important and well-studied graph families, such as circle graphs, comparability graphs, 3-colorable graphs, graphs of vertex degree at most 3, etc. By answering an open question from [M. Halldorsson, S. Kitaev and A. Pyatkin, Alternation graphs, Lect. Notes Comput. Sci. 6986 (2011) 191--202. Proceedings of the 37th International Workshop on Graph-Theoretic Concepts in Computer Science, WG 2011, Tepla Monastery, Czech Republic, June 21-24, 2011.], in the present paper we show that not all graphs of vertex degree at most 4 are word-representable. Combining this result with some previously known facts, we derive that the number of $n$-vertex word-representable graphs is $2^{\frac{n^2}{3}+o(n^2)}$.

The maximal order of Stern's diatomic sequence
We answer a question of Calkin and Wilf concerning the maximal order of Stern's diatomic sequence. Specifically, we prove that $$\limsup_{n\to\infty}\frac{a(n)}{\varphi^{\log_2 n}}=\frac{\varphi^{\log_2 3}}{\sqrt{5}},$$ where $\varphi=(\sqrt{5}+1)/2$ is the golden ratio. This improves on previous results given by Berlekamp, Conway, and Guy, who showed that the limit value was bounded above by 1.25, and by Calkin and Wilf, who showed that the exact value was in the interval $[({\varphi}/{\sqrt{5}})({3}/{2})^{\log_2\varphi},(\varphi+1)/{\sqrt{5}}].$

A classification of the face numbers of Buchsbaum simplicial posets
Published • View Publication • BIB
The family of Buchsbaum simplicial posets generalizes the family of simplicial cell manifolds. The $h'$-vector of a simplicial complex or simplicial poset encodes the combinatorial and topological data of its face numbers and the reduced Betti numbers of its geometric realization. Novik and Swartz showed that the $h'$-vector of a Buchsbaum simplicial poset satisfies certain simple inequalities; in this paper we show that these necessary conditions are in fact sufficient to characterize the $h'$-vectors of Buchsbaum simplicial posets with prescribed Betti numbers.

Nowhere-zero flows on signed regular graphs
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 48 (2015) 34-47 • View Publication • BIB
We study the flow spectrum ${\cal S}(G)$ and the integer flow spectrum $\overline{\cal S}(G)$ of signed $(2t+1)$-regular graphs. We show that if $r \in {\cal S}(G)$, then $r = 2+\frac{1}{t}$ or $r \geq 2 + \frac{2}{2t-1}$. Furthermore, $2 + \frac{1}{t} \in {\cal S}(G)$ if and only if $G$ has a $t$-factor. If $G$ has a 1-factor, then $3 \in \overline{\cal S}(G)$, and for every $t \geq 2$, there is a signed $(2t+1)$-regular graph $(H,σ)$ with $ 3 \in \overline{\cal S}(H)$ and $H$ does not have a 1-factor. If $G$ $(\not = K_2^3)$ is a cubic graph which has a 1-factor, then $\{3,4\} \subseteq {\cal S}(G) \cap \overline{\cal S}(G)$. Furthermore, the following four statements are equivalent: (1) $G$ has a 1-factor. (2) $3 \in {\cal S}(G)$. (3) $3 \in \overline{\cal S}(G)$. (4) $4 \in \overline{\cal S}(G)$. There are cubic graphs whose integer flow spectrum does not contain 5 or 6, and we construct an infinite family of bridgeless cubic graphs with integer flow spectrum $\{3,4,6\}$. We show that there are signed graphs where the difference between the integer flow number and the flow number is greater than or equal to 1, disproving a conjecture of Raspaud and Zhu. The paper concludes with a proof of Bouchet's 6-flow conjecture for Kotzig-graphs.

Partitions of a Finite Partially Ordered Set
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we investigate the notion of partition of a finite partially ordered set (poset, for short). We will define three different notions of partition of a poset, namely, monotone, regular, and open partition. For each of these notions we will find three equivalent definitions, that will be shown to be equivalent. We start by defining partitions of a poset in terms of fibres of some surjection having the poset as domain. We then obtain combinatorial characterisations of such notions in terms of blocks, without reference to surjection. Finally, we give a further, equivalent definition of each kind of partition by means of analogues of equivalence relations.

Finite groups whose prime graphs are regular
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let G be a finite group and let Irr(G) be the set of all irreducible complex characters of G. Let cd(G) be the set of all character degrees of G and denote by ρ(G) the set of primes which divide some character degrees of G. The prime graph Δ(G) associated to G is a graph whose vertex set is ρ(G) and there is an edge between two distinct primes p and q if and only if the product pq divides some character degree of G. In this paper, we show that the prime graph Δ(G) of a finite group G is 3-regular if and only if it is a complete graph with four vertices.

The arithmetical rank of the edge ideals of graphs with whiskers
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the edge ideals of large classes of graphs with whiskers and for these ideals we prove that the arithmetical rank is equal to the big height. Then we extend these results to other classes of squarefree monomial ideals, generated in any degree, proving that the same equality holds.
