On a theorem of Erdős and Simonovits on graphs not containing the cube
The cube Q is the usual 8-vertex graph with 12 edges. Here we give a new proof for a theorem of Erdős and Simonovits concerning the Turán number of the cube. Namely, it is shown that e(G) < n^{8/5}+(2n)^{3/2} holds for any n-vertex cube-free graph G. Our aim is to give a self-contained exposition. We also point out the best known results and supply bipartite versions.

The Combinatorics of Flat Folds: a Survey
Published in Origami3: The Third International Meeting of Origami Science, Mathematics, and Education, T. Hull ed., AK Peters, 2002 • Search Publication
We survey results on the foldability of flat origami models. The main topics are the question of when a given crease pattern can fold flat, the combinatorics of mountain and valley creases, and counting how many ways a given crease pattern can be folded. In particular, we explore generalizations of Maekawa's and Kawasaki's Theorems, develop a necessary and sufficient condition for a given assignment of mountains and valleys to fold up in a special case of single vertex folds, and describe recursive formulas to enumerate the number of ways that single vertex in a crease pattern can be folded.

Forbidden Families of Configurations
A simple matrix is a (0,1)-matrix with no repeated columns. For a (0,1)-matrix $F$, we say that a (0,1)-matrix $A$ has $F$ as a configuration if there is a submatrix of $A$ which is a row and column permutation of $F$ (trace is the set system version of a configuration). Let $\ncols{A}$ denote the number of columns of $A$. Let ${\cal F}$ be a family of matrices. We define the extremal function $forb(m,{\cal F})=\max{\ncols{A} : A is m-rowed simple matrix and has no configuration F\in{\cal F}}$. We consider some families ${\cal F}=\{F_1,F_2,\ldots, F_t\}$ such that individually each $\forb(m,F_i)$ has greater asymptotic growth than $\forb(m,{\cal F})$.

Convex geometric (k+2)-quasiplanar representations of semi-bar k-visibility graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We examine semi-bar visibility graphs in the plane and on a cylinder in which sightlines can pass through k objects. We show every semi-bar k-visibility graph has a (k+2)-quasiplanar representation in the plane with vertices drawn as points in convex position and edges drawn as segments. We also show that the graphs having cylindrical semi-bar k-visibility representations with semi-bars of different lengths are the same as the (2k+2)-degenerate graphs having edge-maximal (k+2)-quasiplanar representations in the plane with vertices drawn as points in convex position and edges drawn as segments.

New steps in walks with small steps in the quarter plane
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 19 (2015) 461-511 • View Publication • BIB
In this article we obtain new expressions for the generating functions counting (non-singular) walks with small steps in the quarter plane. Those are given in terms of infinite series, while in the literature, the standard expressions use solutions to boundary value problems. We illustrate our results with three examples (an algebraic case, a transcendental D-finite case, and an infinite group model).

Coxeter groups and their quotients arising from cluster algebras
Published in Int. Math. Res. Notices (2016), 5135-5186 • View Publication • BIB
In a recent paper, Barot and Marsh presented an explicit construction of presentation of a finite Weyl group by any seed of corresponding cluster algebra, i.e. by any diagram mutation-equivalent to an orientation of a Dynkin diagram with given Weyl group. Extending their construction to the affine case, we obtain presentations for all affine Coxeter groups. Furthermore, we generalize the construction to the settings of diagrams arising from unpunctured triangulated surfaces and orbifolds, which leads to presentations of corresponding groups as quotients of numerous distinct Coxeter groups.

A Set of Questions in Combinatorial and Metric Geometry
We briefly introduce several problems: (1) a generalization of the convex fair partition conjecture, (2) on non-trivial invariants among polyhedrons that can be formed from the same set of face polygons, (3) two questions on assembling rectangular tiles to form larger rectangles and (4) on convex regions which maximize and minimize the diameter for specified area and perimeter. For each question, we discuss partial solutions and indicate aspects that to our knowledge, await exploration.

The state complexity of random DFAs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The state complexity of a Deterministic Finite-state automaton (DFA) is the number of states in its minimal equivalent DFA. We study the state complexity of random $n$-state DFAs over a $k$-symbol alphabet, drawn uniformly from the set $[n]^{[n]\times[k]}\times2^{[n]}$ of all such automata. We show that, with high probability, the latter is $α_k n + O(\sqrt n\log n)$ for a certain explicit constant $α_k$.

Orthogonality and minimality in the homology of locally finite graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a finite set $E$, a subset $D\sub E$ (viewed as a function $E\to \F_2$) is orthogonal to a given subspace $\FF$ of the $\F_2$-vector space of functions $E\to \F_2$ as soon as $D$ is orthogonal to every $\sub$-minimal element of $\FF$. This fails in general when $E$ is infinite. However, we prove the above statement for the six subspaces $\FF$ of the edge space of any 3-connected locally finite graph that are relevant to its homology: the topological, algebraic, and finite cycle and cut spaces. This solves a problem of [5]
On a sumset conjecture of Erdős
Published in Canad. J. Math. 67 (2015), no. 4, 795-809 • View Publication • BIB
Erdős conjectured that for any set $A\subseteq \mathbb{N}$ with positive lower asymptotic density, there are infinite sets $B,C\subseteq \mathbb{N}$ such that $B+C\subseteq A$. We verify Erdős' conjecture in the case that $A$ has Banach density exceeding $\frac{1}{2}$. As a consequence, we prove that, for $A\subseteq \mathbb{N}$ with positive Banach density (a much weaker assumption than positive lower density), we can find infinite $B,C\subseteq \mathbb{N}$ such that $B+C$ is contained in the union of $A$ and a translate of $A$. Both of the aforementioned results are generalized to arbitrary countable amenable groups. We also provide a positive solution to Erdős' conjecture for subsets of the natural numbers that are pseudorandom.

Representing Boolean Functions Using Polynomials: More Can Offer Less
Published in LNCS 6677, 2011, pp. 290-296 • View Publication • BIB
Polynomial threshold gates are basic processing units of an artificial neural network. When the input vectors are binary vectors, these gates correspond to Boolean functions and can be analyzed via their polynomial representations. In practical applications, it is desirable to find a polynomial representation with the smallest number of terms possible, in order to use the least possible number of input lines to the unit under consideration. For this purpose, instead of an exact polynomial representation, usually the sign representation of a Boolean function is considered. The non-uniqueness of the sign representation allows the possibility for using a smaller number of monomials by solving a minimization problem. This minimization problem is combinatorial in nature, and so far the best known deterministic algorithm claims the use of at most $0.75\times 2^n$ of the $2^n$ total possible monomials. In this paper, the basic methods of representing a Boolean function by polynomials are examined, and an alternative approach to this problem is proposed. It is shown that it is possible to use at most $0.5\times 2^n = 2^{n-1}$ monomials based on the $\{0, 1\}$ binary inputs by introducing extra variables, and at the same time keeping the degree upper bound at $n$. An algorithm for further reduction of the number of terms that used in a polynomial representation is provided. Examples show that in certain applications, the improvement achieved by the proposed method over the existing methods is significant.
New bounds for the distance Ramsey number
Published in Discrete Mathematics 313 (2013), 2566-2574 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we study the distance Ramsey number $R_{\it D}(s,t,d)$. The \textit{distance Ramsey number} $R_{\it D}(s,t,d) $ is the minimum number $n$ such that for any graph $ G $ on $ n $ vertices, either $G$ contains an induced $ s $-vertex subgraph isomorphic to a distance graph in $ \Real^d $ or $ \bar {G} $ contains an induced $ t $-vertex subgraph isomorphic to the distance graph in $ \Real^d $. We obtain the upper and lower bounds on $R_{\it D}(s,s,d),$ which are similar to the bounds for the classical Ramsey number $R(\lceil \frac{s}{[d/2]} \rceil, \lceil \frac{s}{[d/2]} \rceil)$.

Cohen-Lenstra heuristics and random matrix theory over finite fields
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let g be a random element of a finite classical group G, and let λ_{z-1}(g) denote the partition corresponding to the polynomial z-1 in the rational canonical form of g. As the rank of G tends to infinity, λ_{z-1}(g) tends to a partition distributed according to a Cohen-Lenstra type measure on partitions. We give sharp upper and lower bounds on the total variation distance between the random partition λ_{z-1}(g) and the Cohen-Lenstra type measure.

The algebraicity of ill-distributed sets
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that every set S in [N]^d occupying less than p^t residue classes for some real number t < d and every prime p, must essentially lie in the solution set of a polynomial equation of degree at most (log N)^C, for some constant C depending only on t and d. This provides the first structural result for arbitrary t < d and S.

The coloring problem for classes with two small obstructions

The coloring problem is studied in the paper for graph classes defined by two small forbidden induced subgraphs. We prove some sufficient conditions for effective solvability of the problem in such classes. As their corollary we determine the computational complexity for all sets of two connected forbidden induced subgraphs with at most five vertices except 13 explicitly enumerated cases

Tight Chromatic Upper Bound for {3K1, C5}-free Graphs
Problem of finding an optimal upper bound for a chromatic no. of 3K1-free graphs is still open and pretty hard. Here we find a tight chromatic upper bound for {3K1, C5}-free graphs. We prove that if G is {3K1, C5}-free, then the chromatic no. <= (3ω-1)/2 where ω is the size of a maximum clique in G and show with examples that the bound is tight.
