Multicut Lower Bounds via Network Coding
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a new technique to certify lower bounds on the multicut size using network coding. In directed networks the network coding rate is not a lower bound on the multicut, but we identify a class of networks on which the rate is equal to the size of the minimum multicut and show this class is closed under the strong graph product. We then show that the famous construction of Saks et al. that gives a $Θ(k)$ gap between the multicut and the multicommodity flow rate is contained in this class. This allows us to apply our result to strengthen their multicut lower bound, determine the exact value of the minimum multicut, and give an optimal network coding solution with rate matching the multicut.

Nash Williams Conjecture and the Dominating Cycle Conjecture
Published • View Publication • BIB
The disproved Nash Williams conjecture states that every 4-regular 4-connected graph has a hamiltonian cycle. We show that a modification of this conjecture is equivalent to the Dominating Cycle Conjecture.

More on the skew-spectra of bipartite graphs and Cartesian products of graphs
Given a graph $G$, let $G^σ$ be an oriented graph of $G$ with the orientation $σ$ and skew-adjacency matrix $S(G^σ)$. Then the spectrum of $S(G^σ)$ is called the skew-spectrum of $G^σ$, denoted by $Sp_S(G^σ)$. It is known that a graph $G$ is bipartite if and only if there is an orientation $σ$ of $G$ such that $Sp_S(G^σ)=iSp(G)$. In [D. Cui, Y. Hou, On the skew spectra of Cartesian products of graphs, Electron. J. Combin. 20(2013), #P19], Cui and Hou conjectured that such orientation of a bipartite graph is unique under switching-equivalence. In this paper, we prove that the conjecture is true. Moreover, we give an orientation of the Cartesian product of a bipartite graph and a graph, and then determine the skew-spectrum of the resulting oriented product graph, which generalizes Cui and Hou's result, and can be used to construct more oriented graphs with maximum skew energy.
Complete arcs and complete caps from cubics with an isolated double point
Small complete arcs and caps in Galois spaces over finite fields $\fq$ with characteristic greater than 3 are constructed from cubic curves with an isolated double point. For $m$ a divisor of $q+1$, complete plane arcs of size approximately $q/m$ are obtained, provided that $(m,6)=1$ and $m<\{1}{4}q^{1/4}$. If in addition $m=m_1m_2$ with $(m_1,m_2)=1$, then complete caps of size approximately $\{m_1+m_2}{m}q^{N/2}$ in affine spaces of dimension $N\equiv 0 \pmod 4$ are constructed.

A bijection for tri-cellular maps
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we give a bijective proof for a relation between uni- bi- and tricellular maps of certain topological genus. While this relation can formally be obtained using Matrix-theory as a result of the Schwinger-Dyson equation, we here present a bijection for the corresponding coefficient equation. Our construction is facilitated by repeated application of a certain cutting, the contraction of edges, incident to two vertices and the deletion of certain edges.

Euler-Frobenius numbers and rounding
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the Euler-Frobenius numbers, a generalization of the Eulerian numbers, and the probability distribution obtained by normalizing them. This distribution can be obtained by rounding a sum of independent uniform random variables; this is more or less implicit in various results and we try to explain this and various connections to other areas of mathematics, such as spline theory. The mean, variance and (some) higher cumulants of the distribution are calculated. Asymptotic results are given. We include a couple of applications to rounding errors and election methods.

Graphs with $χ=Δ$ have big cliques
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Math. Vol. 29(4), 2015, pp. 1792-1814 • View Publication • BIB
Brooks' Theorem states that if a graph has $Δ\ge 3$ and $ω\le Δ$, then $χ\le Δ$. Borodin and Kostochka conjectured that if $Δ\ge 9$ and $ω\le Δ-1$, then $χ\le Δ-1$. We show that if $Δ\ge 13$ and $ω\le Δ-4$, then $χ\le Δ-1$. For a graph $G$, let $\mathcal{H}$ denote the subgraph of $G$ induced by vertices of degree $Δ$. We also show that if $ω\le Δ-1$ and $ω(\mathcal{H})\le Δ-6$, then $χ\le Δ-1$.

The CRT is the scaling limit of random dissections
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the graph structure of large random dissections of polygons sampled according to Boltzmann weights, which encompasses the case of uniform dissections or uniform $p$-angulations. As their number of vertices $n$ goes to infinity, we show that these random graphs, rescaled by $n^{-1/2}$, converge in the Gromov--Hausdorff sense towards a multiple of Aldous' Brownian tree when the weights decrease sufficiently fast. The scaling constant depends on the Boltzmann weights in a rather amusing and intriguing way, and is computed by making use of a Markov chain which compares the length of geodesics in dissections with the length of geodesics in their dual trees.

Giambelli and degeneracy locus formulas for classical G/P spaces
Published in Mosc. Math. J. 16 (2016), 125-177 • View Publication • BIB
Let G be a classical complex Lie group, P any parabolic subgroup of G, and X = G/P the corresponding homogeneous space, which parametrizes (isotropic) partial flags of subspaces of a fixed vector space. In the mid 1990s, Fulton, Pragacz, and Ratajski asked for global formulas which express the cohomology classes of the universal Schubert varieties in flag bundles -- when the space X varies in an algebraic family -- in terms of the Chern classes of the vector bundles involved in their definition. This has applications to the theory of degeneracy loci of vector bundles and is closely related to the Giambelli problem for the torus-equivariant cohomology ring of X. In this article, we explain the answer to these questions which was obtained in arXiv:0908.3628, in terms of combinatorial data coming from the Weyl group.

New measures of graph irregularity
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we define and compare four new measures of graph irregularity. We use these measures to prove upper bounds for the chromatic number and the Colin de Verdiere parameter. We also strengthen the concise Turan theorem for irregular graphs and investigate to what extent Turan's theorem can be similarly strengthened for generalized r-partite graphs. We conclude by relating these new measures to the Randic index and using the measures to devise new normalised indices of network heterogeneity.

Judicious partitions of directed graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The area of judicious partitioning considers the general family of partitioning problems in which one seeks to optimize several parameters simultaneously, and these problems have been widely studied in various combinatorial contexts. In this paper, we study essentially the most fundamental judicious partitioning problem for directed graphs, which naturally extends the classical Max Cut problem to this setting: we seek bipartitions in which many edges cross in each direction. It is easy to see that a minimum outdegree condition is required in order for the problem to be nontrivial, and we prove that every directed graph with M edges and minimum outdegree at least two admits a bipartition in which at least (1/6 + o(1))M edges cross in each direction. We also prove that if the minimum outdegree is at least three, then the constant can be increased to 1/5. If the minimum outdegree tends to infinity with N, then the constant increases to 1/4. All of these constants are best-possible, and provide asymptotic answers to a question of Alex Scott.

Limits and decomposition of de Bruijn's additive systems
Published in in: Combinatorial and Additive Number Theory II, Springer, New York, 2017, pp. 255--267 • View Publication • BIB
An additive system for the nonnegative integers is a family (A_i)_{i\in I} of sets of nonnegative integers with 0 \in A_i for all i \in I such that every nonnegative integer can be written uniquely in the form \sum_{i\in I} a_i with a_i \in A_i for all i and a_i \neq 0 for only finitely many i. In 1956, de Bruijn proved that every additive system is constructed from an infinite sequence (g_i)_{i \in \N} of integers with g_i \geq 2 for all i, or is a contraction of such a system. This paper gives a complete classification of the "uncontractable" or "indecomposable" additive systems, and also considers limits and stability of additive systems.
Small complete caps from nodal cubics
Published • View Publication • BIB
Bicovering arcs in Galois affine planes of odd order are a powerful tool for constructing complete caps in spaces of higher dimensions. In this paper we investigate whether some arcs contained in nodal cubic curves are bicovering. For $m_1$, $m_2$ coprime divisors of $q-1$, bicovering arcs in $AG(2,q)$ of size $k\le (q-1)\frac{m_1+m_2}{m_1m_2}$ are obtained, provided that $(m_1m_2,6)=1$ and $m_1m_2<\sqrt[4]{q}/3.5$. Such arcs produce complete caps of size $kq^{(N-2)/2}$ in affine spaces of dimension $N\equiv 0 \pmod 4$. For infinitely many $q$'s these caps are the smallest known complete caps in $AG(N,q)$, $N \equiv 0 \pmod 4$.

Grounded Lipschitz functions on trees are typically flat
Published • View Publication • BIB
A grounded M-Lipschitz function on a rooted d-ary tree is an integer-valued map on the vertices that changes by at most along edges and attains the value zero on the leaves. We study the behavior of such functions, specifically, their typical value at the root v_0 of the tree. We prove that the probability that the value of a uniformly chosen random function at v_0 is more than M+t is doubly-exponentially small in t. We also show a similar bound for continuous (real-valued) grounded Lipschitz functions.

Counting sets with small sumset and applications
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the number of $k$-element sets $A \subset \{1,\ldots,N\}$ with $|A + A| \leq K|A|$ for some (fixed) $K > 0$. Improving results of the first author and of Alon, Balogh, Samotij and the second author, we determine this number up to a factor of $2^{o(k)} N^{o(1)}$ for most $N$ and $k$. As a consequence of this and a further new result concerning the number of sets $A \subset \mathbf{Z}/N\mathbf{Z}$ with $|A +A| \leq c |A|^2$, we deduce that the random Cayley graph on $\mathbf{Z}/N\mathbf{Z}$ with edge density~$\frac{1}{2}$ has no clique or independent set of size greater than $\big( 2 + o(1) \big) \log_2 N$, asymptotically the same as for the Erdős-Rényi random graph. This improves a result of the first author from 2003 in which a bound of $160 \log_2 N$ was obtained. As a second application, we show that if the elements of $A \subset \mathbf{N}$ are chosen at random, each with probability $1/2$, then the probability that $A+A$ misses exactly $k$ elements of $\mathbf{N}$ is equal to $\big( 2 + o(1) \big)^{-k/2}$ as $k \to \infty$.

Limit laws and automorphism groups of random nonrigid structures
Published in Journal of Logic and Analysis, Vol. 7, no 2 (2015) 1-53 p • View Publication • BIB
A systematic study is made, for an arbitrary finite relational language with at least one symbol of arity at least 2, of classes of nonrigid finite structures. The well known results that almost all finite structures are rigid and that the class of finite structures has a zero-one law are, in the present context, the first layer in a hierarchy of classes of finite structures with increasingly more complex automorphism groups. Such a hierarchy can be defined in more than one way. For example, the $k$th level of the hierarchy can consist of all structures having at least $k$ elements which are moved by some automorphism. Or we can consider, for any finite group $G$, all finite structures $\mathcal{M}$ such that $G$ is a subgroup of the group of autmorphisms of $\mathcal{M}$; in this case the "hierarchy" is a partial order. In both cases, as well as variants of them, each "level" satisfies a logical limit law, but not a zero-one law (unless $k = 0$ or $G$ is trivial). Moreover, the number of (labelled or unlabelled) $n$-element structures in one place of the hierarchy divided by the number of $n$-element structures in another place always converges to a rational number or to $\infty$ as $n \to \infty$. All instances of the respective result are proved by an essentially uniform argument.

Hyperplanes and hamiltonian circuits in Perfect Matroid Designs with fixed basis
We study the number of hamiltonian circuits, containing a fixed basis, and the number of hyperplanes, which do not contain a fixed basis in perfect matroid designs. Projective and affine finite geometries are considered as examples of such matroids. We give algorithms to find the hyperplanes and the hamiltonian circuits in such cases.

Shellability of the higher pinched Veronese posets
Published • View Publication • BIB
The pinched Veronese poset $V^*_n$ is the poset with ground set consisting of all non-negative integer vectors of length n such that the sum of their coordinates is divisible by $n$ with exception of the vector $(1,...,1)$. For two vectors $a$ and $b$ in $V^*_n$ we have $a \leq b$ if and only if $b - a$ belongs to the ground set of $V^*_n$. We show that every interval in $V^*_n$ is shellable for $n$ at least 4. In order to obtain the result, we develop a new method for showing that a poset is shellable. This method differs from classical lexicographic shellability. Shellability of intervals in $V^*_n$ has consequences in commutative algebra. As a corollary we obtain a combinatorial proof of the fact that the pinched Veronese ring is Koszul for $n \geq 4$. (This also follows from a result by Conca, Herzog, Trung and Valla.)

Total occurrence statistics on restricted permutations
We study the total number of occurrences of several vincular (also called generalized) patterns and other statistics, such as the major index and the Denert statistic, on permutations avoiding a pattern of length 3, extending results of Bona (2010, 2012) and Homberger (2012). In particular, for 2-3-1-avoiding permutations, we find the total number of occurrences of any vincular pattern of length 3. In some cases the answer is given by simple expressions involving binomial coefficients. The tools we use are bijections with Dyck paths, generating functions, and block decompositions of permutations.

Affine unfoldings of convex polyhedra
Published in Geom. Topol. 18 (2014) 3055-3090 • View Publication • BIB
We show that every convex polyhedron admits a simple edge unfolding after an affine transformation. In particular there exists no combinatorial obstruction to a positive resolution of Durer's unfoldability problem, which answers a question of Croft, Falconer, and Guy. Among other techniques, the proof employs a topological characterization for embeddings among the planar immersions of the disk.
