Ramanujan graphings and correlation decay in local algorithms
Published in Random Structures & Algorithms Volume 47, Issue 3, 424-435, 2015 • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a large-girth $d$-regular graph and $μ$ be a random process on the vertices of $G$ produced by a randomized local algorithm. We prove the upper bound $(k+1-2k/d)\Bigl(\frac{1}{\sqrt{d-1}}\Bigr)^k$ for the (absolute value of the) correlation of values on pairs of vertices of distance $k$ and show that this bound is optimal. The same results hold automatically for factor of i.i.d processes on the $d$-regular tree. In that case we give an explicit description for the (closure) of all possible correlation sequences. Our proof is based on the fact that the Bernoulli graphing of the infinite $d$-regular tree has spectral radius $2\sqrt{d-1}$. Graphings with this spectral gap are infinite analogues of finite Ramanujan graphs and they are interesting on their own right.

Fibonacci sequence related to a combinatorial problem on binary matrices
Published in American Journal Mathematics and Sciences (AJMS), ISSN 2250 3102, Vol. 3, No. 1 (2014), 79--83 • Search Publication
We discuss an equivalence relation on the set of square binary matrices with the same number of 1's in each row and each column. Each binary matrix is represented using ordered n-tuples of natural numbers. We give a few starting values of integer sequences related to the discussed problem. The obtained sequences are new and they are not described in the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS). We show a relationship between some particular values of the parameters and the Fibonacci sequence.

Quantum walk in symmetric Cayley graph over $\Z_2^n$
We show that the hitting time of the discrete quantum walk on a symmetric Cayley graph over $\Z_2^n $ from a vertex to its antipodal is polynomial in degree of the graph. We prove that returning time of quantum walk on a symmetric Cayley graph over $\Z_2^n $ is polynomial and the probability to hit is almost one. To prove it, we give a new estimation of Kravchuk coefficients. We give an example of a probabilistic polynomial algorithm that finds an antipodal vertex in symmetric Cayley graphs.

Examples of cyclically-interval non-colorable bipartite graphs
For an undirected, simple, finite, connected graph $G$, we denote by $V(G)$ and $E(G)$ the sets of its vertices and edges, respectively. A function $\varphi:E(G)\rightarrow\{1,2,\ldots,t\}$ is called a proper edge $t$-coloring of a graph $G$ if adjacent edges are colored differently and each of $t$ colors is used. An arbitrary nonempty subset of consecutive integers is called an interval. If $\varphi$ is a proper edge $t$-coloring of a graph $G$ and $x\in V(G)$, then $S_G(x,\varphi)$ denotes the set of colors of edges of $G$ which are incident with $x$. A proper edge $t$-coloring $\varphi$ of a graph $G$ is called a cyclically-interval $t$-coloring if for any $x\in V(G)$ at least one of the following two conditions holds: a) $S_G(x,\varphi)$ is an interval, b) $\{1,2,\ldots,t\}\setminus S_G(x,\varphi)$ is an interval. For any $t\in \mathbb{N}$, let $\mathfrak{M}_t$ be the set of graphs for which there exists a cyclically-interval $t$-coloring, and let $$\mathfrak{M}\equiv\bigcup_{t\geq1}\mathfrak{M}_t.$$ Examples of bipartite graphs that do not belong to the class $\mathfrak{M}$ are constructed.

Infinite Turán problems for bipartite graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider an infinite version of the bipartite Turán problem. Let $G$ be an infinite graph with $V(G) = \mathbb{N}$ and let $G_n$ be the $n$-vertex subgraph of $G$ induced by the vertices $\{1,2, \dots, n \}$. We show that if $G$ is $K_{2,t+1}$-free then for infinitely many $n$, $e(G_n) \leq 0.471 \sqrt{t} n^{3/2}$. Using the $K_{2,t+1}$-free graphs constructed by Füredi, we construct an infinite $K_{2,t+1}$-free graph with $e(G_n) \geq 0.23 \sqrt{t}n^{3/2}$ for all $n \geq n_0$.

The 1-box pattern on pattern avoiding permutations
This paper is continuation of the study of the 1-box pattern in permutations introduced by the authors in \cite{kitrem4}. We derive a two-variable generating function for the distribution of this pattern on 132-avoiding permutations, and then study some of its coefficients providing a link to the Fibonacci numbers. We also find the number of separable permutations with two and three occurrences of the 1-box pattern.

Global communication algorithms for Cayley graphs
We discuss several combinatorial problems that arise when one looks at computational algorithms for highly symmetric networks of processors. More specifically, we are interested in minimal times associated with four communication tasks (defined more precisely below): universal broadcast, every processor has a vector that it wishes to broadcast to all the others; universal accumulation, every processor wishes to receive the sum of all the vectors being sent to it by all the other processors; universal exchange, every processor wishes to exchange a vector with each other processor; and global summation, every processor wants the sum of the vectors in all the processors

On the Number of Closed Factors in a Word
Published • View Publication • BIB
A closed word (a.k.a. periodic-like word or complete first return) is a word whose longest border does not have internal occurrences, or, equivalently, whose longest repeated prefix is not right special. We investigate the structure of closed factors of words. We show that a word of length $n$ contains at least $n+1$ distinct closed factors, and characterize those words having exactly $n+1$ closed factors. Furthermore, we show that a word of length $n$ can contain $Θ(n^{2})$ many distinct closed factors.

The Complexity of the Proper Orientation Number
Published • View Publication • BIB
Graph orientation is a well-studied area of graph theory. A proper orientation of a graph $G = (V,E)$ is an orientation $D$ of $E(G)$ such that for every two adjacent vertices $ v $ and $ u $, $ d^{-}_{D}(v) \neq d^{-}_{D}(u)$ where $d_{D}^{-}(v)$ is the number of edges with head $v$ in $D$. The proper orientation number of $G$ is defined as $ \overrightarrowχ (G) =\displaystyle \min_{D\in Γ} \displaystyle\max_{v\in V(G)} d^{-}_{D}(v) $ where $Γ$ is the set of proper orientations of $G$. We have $ χ(G)-1 \leq \overrightarrowχ (G)\leq Δ(G) $. We show that, it is $ \mathbf{NP} $-complete to decide whether $\overrightarrowχ(G)=2$, for a given planar graph $G$. Also, we prove that there is a polynomial time algorithm for determining the proper orientation number of 3-regular graphs. In sharp contrast, we will prove that this problem is $ \mathbf{NP} $-hard for 4-regular graphs.

Matrices of forests, analysis of networks, and ranking problems
Published • View Publication • BIB
The matrices of spanning rooted forests are studied as a tool for analysing the structure of networks and measuring their properties. The problems of revealing the basic bicomponents, measuring vertex proximity, and ranking from preference relations / sports competitions are considered. It is shown that the vertex accessibility measure based on spanning forests has a number of desirable properties. An interpretation for the stochastic matrix of out-forests in terms of information dissemination is given.

About the Discriminant Power of the Subgraph Centrality and Other Centrality Measures About the Discriminant Power of the Subgraph Centrality and Other Centrality Measures(Working paper)
The discriminant power of centrality indices for the degree, eigenvector, closeness, betweenness and subgraph centrality is analyzed. It is defined by the number of graphs for which the standard deviation of the centrality of its nodes is zero. On the basis of empirical analysis it is concluded that the subgraph centrality displays better discriminant power than the rest of centralities. We also propose some new conjectures about the types of graphs for which the subgraph centrality does not discriminate among nonequivalent nodes.

A new result on the problem of Buratti, Horak and Rosa
Published • View Publication • BIB
The conjecture of Peter Horak and Alex Rosa (generalizing that of Marco Buratti) states that a multiset L of v-1 positive integers not exceeding [v/2] is the list of edge-lengths of a suitable Hamiltonian path of the complete graph with vertex-set {0,1,...,v-1} if and only if the following condition (here reformulated in a slightly easier form) is satisfied: for every divisor d of v, the number of multiples of d appearing in L is at most v-d. In this paper we do some preliminary discussions on the conjecture, including its relationship with graph decompositions. Then we prove, as main result, that the conjecture is true whenever all the elements of L are in {1,2,3,5}.

Sum formula for finite multiple zeta values
Published in J. Math. Soc. Japan 67 (2015), 1069-1076 • View Publication • BIB
The sum formula is one of the most well-known relations among multiple zeta values. This paper proves a conjecture of Kaneko predicting that an analogous formula holds for finite multiple zeta values.

Low-degree planar monomials in characteristic two
Published in J. Algebraic Combinatorics 42 (2015), 695-699 • View Publication • BIB
Planar functions over finite fields give rise to finite projective planes and other combinatorial objects. They exist only in odd characteristic, but recently Zhou introduced an even characteristic analogue which has similar applications. In this paper we determine all planar functions on F_q of the form c-->uc^t, where q is a power of 2, t is an integer with 0<t<=q^{1/4}, and u is a nonzero element of F_q. This settles and sharpens a conjecture of Schmidt and Zhou.

A refinement of Wilf-equivalence for patterns of length 4

In their paper \cite{DokosDwyer:Permutat12}, Dokos et al. conjecture that the major index statistic is equidistributed among 1423-avoiding, 2413-avoiding, and 2314-avoiding permutations. In this paper we confirm this conjecture by constructing two major index preserving bijections, $Θ:S_n(1423)\to S_n(2413)$ and $Ω:S_n(2314)\to S_n(2413)$. In fact, we show that $Θ$ (respectively, $Ω$) preserves numerous other statistics including the descent set, right-to-left maximum (respectively, left-to-right minimum), and a new statistic we call top-steps (respectively, bottom-steps).
The arithmetic Tutte polynomials of the classical root systems
Published • View Publication • BIB
Many combinatorial and topological invariants of a hyperplane arrangement can be computed in terms of its Tutte polynomial. Similarly, many invariants of a hypertoric arrangement can be computed in terms of its arithmetic Tutte polynomial. We compute the arithmetic Tutte polynomials of the classical root systems of types A,B,C, and D, with respect to their integer, root, and weight lattices. We do it in two ways: by introducing a finite field method for arithmetic Tutte polynomials, and by enumerating signed graphs with respect to six parameters.

Unimodality of partitions with distinct parts inside Ferrers shapes
Published in European J. Combin. 49 (2015), 194--202 • View Publication • BIB
We investigate the rank-generating function $F_λ$ of the poset of partitions contained inside a given shifted Ferrers shape $λ$. When $λ$ has four parts, we show that $F_λ$ is unimodal when $λ=\langle n,n-1,n-2,n-3 \rangle$, for any $n\ge 4$, and that unimodality fails for the doubly-indexed, infinite family of partitions of the form $λ=\langle n,n-t,n-2t,n-3t \rangle$, for any given $t\ge 2$ and $n$ large enough with respect to $t$. When $λ$ has $b\le 3$ parts, we show that our rank-generating functions $F_λ$ are all unimodal. However, the situation remains mostly obscure for $b\ge 5$. In general, the type of results that we obtain present some remarkable similarities with those of the 1990 paper of D. Stanton, who considered the case of partitions inside ordinary (straight) Ferrers shapes. Along the way, we also determine some interesting $q$-analogs of the binomial coefficients, which in certain instances we conjecture to be unimodal. We state several other conjectures throughout this note, in the hopes to stimulate further work in this area. In particular, one of these will attempt to place into a much broader context the unimodality of the posets $M(n)$ of staircase partitions, for which determining a combinatorial proof remains an outstanding open problem.

Permutonestohedra
Published • View Publication • BIB
There are several real spherical models associated with a root arrangement, depending on the choice of a building set. The connected components of these models are manifolds with corners which can be glued together to obtain the corresponding real De Concini-Procesi models. In this paper, starting from any root system Phi with finite Coxeter group W and any W-invariant building set, we describe an explicit realization of the real spherical model as a union of polytopes (nestohedra) which lie inside the chambers of the arrangement. The main point of this realization is that the convex hull of these nestohedra is a larger polytope, a permutonestohedron, equipped with an action of W or also, depending on the building set, of Aut(Phi). The permutonestohedra are natural generalizations of Kapranov's permutoassociahedra.

Regularity and projective dimension of edge ideal of $C_5$-free vertex decomposable graphs
Published in Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 142, no. 5 (2014) 1567-1576 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we explain the regularity, projective dimension and depth of edge ideal of some classes of graphs in terms of invariants of graphs. We show that for a $C_5$-free vertex decomposable graph $G$, $\T{reg}(R/I(G))= c_G$, where $c_G$ is the maximum number of 3-disjoint edges in $G$. Moreover for this class of graphs we characterize $\T{pd}(R/I(G))$ and $\T{depth}(R/I(G))$. As a corollary we describe these invariants in forests and sequentially Cohen-Macaulay bipartite graphs.

Problems on q-Analogs in Coding Theory
The interest in $q$-analogs of codes and designs has been increased in the last few years as a consequence of their new application in error-correction for random network coding. There are many interesting theoretical, algebraic, and combinatorial coding problems concerning these q-analogs which remained unsolved. The first goal of this paper is to make a short summary of the large amount of research which was done in the area mainly in the last few years and to provide most of the relevant references. The second goal of this paper is to present one hundred open questions and problems for future research, whose solution will advance the knowledge in this area. The third goal of this paper is to present and start some directions in solving some of these problems.
