Can a non self-complementary graph have the same chromatic polynomial as its complement? The answer to this question of Akiyama and Harrary is positive and was given by J. Xu and Z. Liu. They conjectured that every such graph has the same degree sequence as its complement. In this paper we show that there are infinitely many graphs for which this conjecture does not hold. We then solve a more general variant of the Akiyama-Harary problem by showing that there exists infinitely many non self-complementary graphs having the same Tutte polynomial as their complements.

Let $A$ be a set of $n$ positive integers. We say that a subset $B$ of $A$ is a divisor of $A$, if the sum of the elements in $B$ divides the sum of the elements in $A$. We are interested in the following extremal problem. For each $n$, what is the maximum number of divisors a set of $n$ positive integers can have? We determine this function exactly for all values of $n$. Moreover, for each $n$ we characterize all sets that achieve the maximum. We also prove results for the $k$-subset analogue of our problem. For this variant, we determine the function exactly in the special case that $n=2k$. We also characterize all sets that achieve this bound when $n=2k$.

Chip-firing game and partial Tutte polynomial for Eulerian digraphs

The Chip-firing game is a discrete dynamical system played on a graph, in which chips move along edges according to a simple local rule. Properties of the underlying graph are of course useful to the understanding of the game, but since a conjecture of Biggs that was proved by Merino López, we also know that the study of the Chip-firing game can give insights on the graph. In particular, a strong relation between the partial Tutte polynomial $T_G(1,y)$ and the set of recurrent configurations of a Chip-firing game (with a distinguished sink vertex) has been established for undirected graphs. A direct consequence is that the generating function of the set of recurrent configurations is independent of the choice of the sink for the game, as it characterizes the underlying graph itself. In this paper we prove that this property also holds for Eulerian directed graphs (digraphs), a class on the way from undirected graphs to general digraphs. It turns out from this property that the generating function of the set of recurrent configurations of an Eulerian digraph is a natural and convincing candidate for generalizing the partial Tutte polynomial $T_G(1,y)$ to this class. Our work also gives some promising directions of looking for a generalization of the Tutte polynomial to general digraphs.
Completions of epsilon-dense partial Latin squares; quasirandom k-colorings of graphs
A classical question in combinatorics is the following:\ given a partial Latin square $P$, when can we complete $P$ to a Latin square $L$? In this paper, we investigate the class of \textbf{$ε$-dense partial Latin squares}:\ partial Latin squares in which each symbol, row, and column contains no more than $εn$-many nonblank cells. Based on a conjecture of Nash-Williams, Daykin and Häggkvist conjectured that all $\frac{1}{4}$-dense partial Latin squares are completable. In this paper, we will discuss the proof methods and results used in previous attempts to resolve this conjecture, introduce a novel technique derived from a paper by Jacobson and Matthews on generating random Latin squares, and use this novel technique to study $ ε$-dense partial Latin squares that contain no more than $δn^2$ filled cells in total.
In particular, we construct completions for all $ ε$-dense partial Latin squares containing no more than $δn^2$ filled cells in total, given that $ε< \frac{1}{12}, δ< \frac{ \left(1-12ε\right)^{2}}{10409}$. In particular, we show that all $9.8 \cdot 10^{-5}$-dense partial Latin squares are completable.
We further show that such completions can always be found in polynomial time. This contrasts a result of Colbourn. In Chapter 3, we strengthen Colbourn's result to the claim that completing an arbitrary $\left(\frac{1}{2} + ε\right)$-dense partial Latin square is NP-complete, for any $ε> 0$.
Additional results on triangulations of graphs are found.
In an unrelated vein, Chapter 6 explores the class of quasirandom graphs. In specific, we study quasirandom $k$-edge colorings, and create an analogue of Chung, Graham and Wilson's well-known results for such colorings.
Multiply partition regular matrices

Let $A$ be a finite matrix with rational entries. We say that $A$ is {\it doubly image partition regular\/} if whenever the set ${\mathbb N}$ of positive integers is finitely coloured, there exists $\vec x$ such that the entries of $A\vec x$ are all the same colour (or {\it monochromatic\/}) and also, the entries of $\vec x$ are monochromatic. Which matrices are doubly image partition regular?
More generally, we say that a pair of matrices $(A,B)$, where $A$ and $B$ have the same number of rows, is {\it doubly kernel partition regular\/} if whenever ${\mathbb N}$ is finitely coloured, there exist vectors $\vec x$ and $\vec y$, each monochromatic, such that $A \vec x + B \vec y = 0$. There is an obvious sufficient condition for the pair $(A,B)$ to be doubly kernel partition regular, namely that there exists a positive rational $c$ such that the matrix $M=(\begin{array}{ccccc}A&cB\end{array})$ is kernel partition regular. (That is, whenever ${\mathbb N}$ is finitely coloured, there exists monochromatic $\vec x$ such that $M \vec x=\vec 0$.) Our aim in this paper is to show that this sufficient condition is also necessary. As a consequence we have that a matrix $A$ is doubly image partition regular if and only if there is a positive rational $c$ such that the matrix $(\begin{array}{lr}A&cI\end{array})$ is kernel partition regular, where $I$ is the identity matrix of the appropriate size.
We also prove extensions to the case of several matrices.

The Ramsey number r(K_s,Q_n) is the smallest positive integer N such that every red-blue colouring of the edges of the complete graph K_N on N vertices contains either a red n-dimensional hypercube, or a blue clique on s vertices. Answering a question of Burr and Erdős from 1983, and improving on recent results of Conlon, Fox, Lee and Sudakov, and of the current authors, we show that r(K_s,Q_n) = (s-1) (2^n - 1) + 1 for every s \in \N and every sufficiently large n \in \N.

We show that, if $k$ and $\ell$ are positive integers and $r$ is sufficiently large, then the number of rank-$k$ flats in a rank-$r$ matroid $M$ with no $U_{2,\ell+2}$-minor is less than or equal to number of rank-$k$ flats in a rank-$r$ projective geometry over GF$(q)$, where $q$ is the largest prime power not exceeding $\ell$.
Stanley depth and symbolic powers of monomial ideals
The aim of this paper is to study the Stanley depth of symbolic powers of a squarefree monomial ideal. We prove that for every squarefree monomial ideal $I$ and every pair of integers $k, s\geq 1$, the inequalities ${\rm sdepth} (S/I^{(ks)}) \leq {\rm sdepth} (S/I^{(s)})$ and ${\rm sdepth} (I^{(ks)}) \leq {\rm sdepth} (I^{(s)})$ hold. If moreover $I$ is unmixed of height $d$, then we show that for every integer $k\geq1$, ${\rm sdepth}(I^{(k+d)})\leq {\rm sdepth}(I^{(k)})$ and ${\rm sdepth}(S/I^{(k+d)})\leq {\rm sdepth}(S/I^{(k)})$. Finally, we consider the limit behavior of the Stanley depth of symbolic powers of a squarefree monomial ideal. We also introduce a method for comparing the Stanley depth of factors of monomial ideals.
Asymptotic enumeration of magic series
A magic series is a set of natural numbers that, by virtue of its size, sum, and maximum value, could fill a row of a normal magic square. In this paper, we derive an exact two-dimensional integral representation for the number of magic series of order N. By applying the stationary phase approximation, we develop an expansion in powers of 1/N for the number of magic series and calculate the first few terms. We find excellent agreement between our approximation and the known exact values. Related results are presented for magic cube and hypercube series, bimagic series, and trimagic series.

An
{\it additive labeling} of a graph $G$ is a function $ \ell :V(G) \rightarrow\mathbb{N}$, such that for every two adjacent vertices $ v $ and $ u$ of $ G $, $ \sum_{w \sim v}\ell(w)\neq \sum_{w \sim u}\ell(w) $ ($ x \sim y $ means that $ x $ is joined to $y$). The {\it additive number} of $ G $, denoted by $η(G)$, is the minimum number $k $ such that $ G $ has a additive labeling $ \ell :V(G) \rightarrow \mathbb{N}_k$. The {\it additive choosability} of a graph $G$, denoted by $η_{\ell}(G) $, is the smallest number $k$ such that $G$ has an additive labeling for any assignment of lists of size $k$ to the vertices of $G$, such that the label of each vertex belongs to its own list.
Seamone (2012) \cite{a80} conjectured that for every graph $G$, $η(G)= η_{\ell}(G)$. We give a negative answer to this conjecture and we show that for every $k$ there is a graph $G$ such that $ η_{\ell}(G)- η(G) \geq k$.
A {\it $(0,1)$-additive labeling} of a graph $G$ is a function $ \ell :V(G) \rightarrow\{0,1\}$, such that for every two adjacent vertices $ v $ and $ u$ of $ G $, $ \sum_{w \sim v}\ell(w)\neq \sum_{w \sim u}\ell(w) $.
A graph may lack any $(0,1)$-additive labeling. We show that it is $ \mathbf{NP} $-complete to decide whether a $(0,1)$-additive labeling exists for some families of graphs such as perfect graphs and planar triangle-free graphs. For a graph $G$ with some $(0,1)$-additive labelings, the $(0,1)$-additive number of $G$ is defined as $ σ_{1} (G) = \min_{\ell \in Γ}\sum_{v\in V(G)}\ell(v) $ where $Γ$ is the set of $(0,1)$-additive labelings of $G$. We prove that given a planar graph that admits a $(0,1)$-additive labeling, for all $ \varepsilon >0 $, approximating the $(0,1)$-additive number within $ n^{1-\varepsilon} $ is $ \mathbf{NP} $-hard.
On lattices, distinct distances, and the Elekes-Sharir framework
In this note we consider distinct distances determined by points in an integer lattice. We first consider Erdos's lower bound for the square lattice, recast in the setup of the so-called Elekes-Sharir framework \cite{ES11,GK11}, and show that, without a major change, this framework \emph{cannot} lead to Erdos's conjectured lower bound. This shows that the upper bound of Guth and Katz \cite{GK11} for the related 3-dimensional line-intersection problem is tight for this instance. The gap between this bound and the actual bound of Erdos arises from an application of the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality (which is an integral part of the Elekes-Sharir framework). Our analysis relies on two number-theoretic results by Ramanujan.
We also consider distinct distances in rectangular lattices of the form $\{(i,j) \mid 0\le i\le n^{1-α},\ 0\le j\le n^α\}$, for some $0<α<1/2$, and show that the number of distinct distances in such a lattice is $Θ(n)$. In a sense, our proof "bypasses" a deep conjecture in number theory, posed by Cilleruelo and Granville \cite{CG07}. A positive resolution of this conjecture would also have implied our bound.

We show for each positive integer $a$ that, if $\mathcal{M}$ is a minor-closed class of matroids not containing all rank-$(a+1)$ uniform matroids, then there exists an integer $c$ such that either every rank-$r$ matroid in $\mathcal{M}$ can be covered by at most $r^c$ rank-$a$ sets, or $\mathcal{M}$ contains the GF$(q)$-representable matroids for some prime power $q$ and every rank-$r$ matroid in $\mathcal{M}$ can be covered by at most $cq^r$ rank-$a$ sets. In the latter case, this determines the maximum density of matroids in $\mathcal{M}$ up to a constant factor.

Let $G$ be a simple graph with $n$ vertices and $e(G)$ edges, and $q_1(G)\geq q_2(G)\geq\cdots\geq q_n(G)\geq0$ be the signless Laplacian eigenvalues of $G.$ Let $S_k^+(G)=\sum_{i=1}^{k}q_i(G),$ where $k=1, 2, \ldots, n.$ F. Ashraf et al. conjectured that $S_k^+(G)\leq e(G)+\binom{k+1}{2}$ for $k=1, 2, \ldots, n.$ In this paper, we give various upper bounds for $S_k^+(G),$ and prove that this conjecture is true for the following cases: connected graph with sufficiently large $k,$ unicyclic graphs and bicyclic graphs for all $k,$ and tricyclic graphs when $k\neq 3.$

Many graph properties (e.g., connectedness, containing a complete subgraph) are known to be difficult to check. In a decision-tree model, the cost of an algorithm is measured by the number of edges in the graph that it queries. R. Karp conjectured in the early 1970s that all monotone graph properties are evasive -- that is, any algorithm which computes a monotone graph property must check all edges in the worst case. This conjecture is unproven, but a lot of progress has been made. Starting with the work of Kahn, Saks, and Sturtevant in 1984, topological methods have been applied to prove partial results on the Karp conjecture. This text is a tutorial on these topological methods. I give a fully self-contained account of the central proofs from the paper of Kahn, Saks, and Sturtevant, with no prior knowledge of topology assumed. I also briefly survey some of the more recent results on evasiveness.

It is proved that the number of 9-regular partitions of n is divisible by 3 when n is congruent to 3 mod 4, and by 6 when n is congruent to 13 mod 16. An infinite family of congruences mod 3 holds in other progressions modulo powers of 4 and 5. A collection of conjectures includes two congruences modulo higher powers of 2 and a large family of "congruences with exceptions" for these and other regular partitions mod 3.
Nested colourings of graphs
A proper vertex colouring of a graph is \emph{nested} if the vertices of each of its colour classes can be ordered by inclusion of their open neighbourhoods. Through a relation to partially ordered sets, we show that the nested chromatic number can be computed in polynomial time.
Clearly, the nested chromatic number is an upper bound for the chromatic number of a graph. We develop multiple distinct bounds on the nested chromatic number using common properties of graphs. We also determine the behaviour of the nested chromatic number under several graph operations, including the direct, Cartesian, strong, and lexicographic product. Moreover, we classify precisely the possible nested chromatic numbers of graphs on a fixed number of vertices with a fixed chromatic number.

Each positive rational number x>0 can be written uniquely as x=a/(b-a) for coprime positive integers 0<a<b. We will identify x with the pair (a,b). In this paper we define for each positive rational x>0 a simplicial complex \Ass(x)=\Ass(a,b) called the {\sf rational associahedron}. It is a pure simplicial complex of dimension a-2, and its maximal faces are counted by the {\sf rational Catalan number} \Cat(x)=\Cat(a,b):=\frac{(a+b-1)!}{a!\,b!}. The cases (a,b)=(n,n+1) and (a,b)=(n,kn+1) recover the classical associahedron and its "Fuss-Catalan" generalization studied by Athanasiadis-Tzanaki and Fomin-Reading. We prove that \Ass(a,b) is shellable and give nice product formulas for its h-vector (the {\sf rational Narayana numbers}) and f-vector (the {\sf rational Kirkman numbers}). We define \Ass(a,b) via {\sf rational Dyck paths}: lattice paths from (0,0) to (b,a) staying above the line y = \frac{a}{b}x. We also use rational Dyck paths to define a rational generalization of noncrossing perfect matchings of [2n]. In the case (a,b) = (n, mn+1), our construction produces the noncrossing partitions of [(m+1)n] in which each block has size m+1.
