Optimal compression of hash-origin prefix trees
There is a common problem of operating on hash values of elements of some database. In this paper there will be analyzed informational content of such general task and how to practically approach such found lower boundaries. Minimal prefix tree which distinguish elements turns out to require asymptotically only about 2.77544 bits per element, while standard approaches use a few times more. While being certain of working inside the database, the cost of distinguishability can be reduced further to about 2.33275 bits per elements. Increasing minimal depth of nodes to reduce probability of false positives leads to simple relation with average depth of such random tree, which is asymptotically larger by about 1.33275 bits than lg(n) of the perfect binary tree. This asymptotic case can be also seen as a way to optimally encode n large unordered numbers - saving lg(n!) bits of information about their ordering, which can be the major part of contained information. This ability itself allows to reduce memory requirements even to about 0.693 of required in Bloom filter for the same false positive probability.

We analyze the connection between the autocorrelation of a binary sequence and its run structure given by the run length encoding. We show that both the periodic and the aperiodic autocorrelation of a binary sequence can be formulated in terms of the run structure. The run structure is given by the consecutive runs of the sequence. Let C=(C(0), C(1),...,C(n)) denote the autocorrelation vector of a binary sequence. We prove that the kth component of the second order difference operator of C can be directly calculated by using the consecutive runs of total length k. In particular this shows that the kth autocorrelation is already determined by all consecutive runs of total length L<k. In the aperiodic case we show how the run vector R can be efficiently calculated and give a characterization of skew-symmetric sequences in terms of their run length encoding.
An example of graph limits of growing sequences of random graphs

We consider a class of growing random graphs obtained by creating vertices sequentially one by one: at each step, we choose uniformly the neighbours of the newly created vertex; its degree is a random variable with a fixed but arbitrary distribution, depending on the number of existing vertices. Examples from this class turn out to be the ER random graph, a natural random threshold graph, etc. By working with the notion of graph limits, we define a kernel which, under certain conditions, is the limit of the growing random graph. Moreover, for a subclass of models, the growing graph on any given n vertices has the same distribution as the random graph with n vertices that the kernel defines. The motivation stems from a model of graph growth whose attachment mechanism does not require information about properties of the graph at each iteration.

In this paper we show that a lattice balanced polygon of odd area cannot be cut into an odd number of triangles of equal areas. First result of this type was obtained by Paul Monsky in 1970. He proved that a square cannot be cut into an odd number of triangles of equal areas. In 2000 Sherman Stein conjectured that the same holds for any balanced polygon.
We also show connections between the equidissection problem and tropical geometry.

Let M and N be internally 4-connected binary matroids such that M has a proper N-minor, and |E(N)| is at least seven. As part of our project to develop a splitter theorem for internally 4-connected binary matroids, we prove the following result: if M\e has no N-minor whenever e is in a triangle of M, and M/e has no N-minor whenever e is in a triad of M, then M has a minor, M', such that M' is internally 4-connected with an N-minor, and 0 < |E(M)|-|E(M')| < 3.

Turyn-type sequences, TT(n), are quadruples of {+,-1}-sequences (A;B;C;D), with lengths n,n,n,n-1 respectively, where the sum of the nonperiodic autocorrelation functions of A,B and twice that of C,D is a delta-function (i.e., vanishes everywhere except at 0). Turyn-type sequences TT(n) are known to exist for all even n not larger than 36. We introduce a definition of equivalence to construct a canonical form for TT(n) in general. By using this canonical form, we enumerate the equivalence classes of TT(n) for n up to and including 32. We also construct the first example of Turyn-type sequences TT(38).

The Canada Day Theorem is an identity involving sums of $k \times k$ minors of an arbitrary $n \times n$ symmetric matrix. It was discovered as a by-product of the work on so-called peakon solutions of an integrable nonlinear partial differential equation proposed by V. Novikov. Here we present another proof of this theorem, which explains the underlying mechanism in terms of the orbits of a certain abelian group action on the set of all $k$-edge matchings of the complete bipartite graph $K_{n,n}$.
On Epsilon-Nets, Distance Oracles, and Metric Embeddings
We give two new applications of an observation from \cite{ADFGW11}. The first is an almost linear sized constant time data structure for reporting very large distances in undirected graphs. The second is a generic transformation of results about $\ell_1$-embeddability of metrics to a setting, where we are interested in preservation of large distances only.
Degenerate flag varieties: moment graphs and Schröder numbers

We study geometric and combinatorial properties of the degenerate flag varieties of type A. These varieties are acted upon by the automorphism group of a certain representation of a type A quiver, containing a maximal torus T. Using the group action, we describe the moment graphs, encoding the zero- and one-dimensional T-orbits. We also study the smooth and singular loci of the degenerate flag varieties. We show that the Euler characteristic of the smooth locus is equal to the large Schröder number and the Poincaré polynomial is given by a natural statistics counting the number of diagonal steps in a Schröder path. As an application we obtain a new combinatorial description of the large and small Schröder numbers and their q-analogues.
Counting Line-Colored D-ary Trees
Random tensor models are generalizations of matrix models which also support a 1/N expansion. The dominant observables are in correspondence with some trees, namely rooted trees with vertices of degree at most $D$ and lines colored by a number $i$ from 1 to $D$ such that no two lines connecting a vertex to its descendants have the same color. In this Letter we study by independent methods a generating function for these observables. We prove that the number of such trees with exactly $p_i$ lines of color $i$ is $\frac{1}{\sum_{i=1}^D p_i +1} \binom{\sum_{i=1}^D p_i+1}{p_1} ... \binom{\sum_{i=1}^D p_i+1}{p_D}$.

The aim of this paper is to describe the inversion of the sum $\sum_{n\geq 0}a^nb^n$ where $a$ and $b$ are non-commuting variables as a formal series in $a$ and $b$. We show that the inversion satisfies a non-commutative quadratic equation and that the number of certain monomials in its homogeneous components equals to a Catalan number. We also study general solutions of similar quadratic equations.
Three Proofs of the Hypergraph Ramsey Theorem (An exposition)
Ramsey, Erdos-Rado, and Conlon-Fox-Sudakov have given proofs of the 3-hypergraph Ramsey Theorem with better and better upper bounds on the 3-hypergraph Ramsey Number. Ramsey and Erdos-Rado also prove the a-hypergraph Ramsey Theorem. Conlon-Fox-Sudakov note that their upper bounds on the 3-hypergraph Ramsey Numbers, together with a recurrence of Erdos-Rado (which was the key to the Erdos-Rado proof), yield improved bounds on the a-hypergraph Ramsey numbers. We present all of these proofs and state explicit bounds for the 2-color case and the c-color case. We give a more detailed analysis of the construction of Conlon-Fox-Sudakov and hence obtain a slightly better bound.

A rotor-router walk is a deterministic version of a random walk, in which the walker is routed to each of the neighbouring vertices in some fixed cyclic order. We consider here directed covers of graphs (called also periodic trees) and we study several quantities related to rotor-router walks on directed covers. The quantities under consideration are: order of the rotor-router group, order of the root element in the rotor-router group and the connection with random walks.
Total coloring of 1-toroidal graphs of maximum degree at least 11 and no adjacent triangles

A {\em total coloring} of a graph $G$ is an assignment of colors to the vertices and the edges of $G$ such that every pair of adjacent/incident elements receive distinct colors. The {\em total chromatic number} of a graph $G$, denoted by $\chiup''(G)$, is the minimum number of colors in a total coloring of $G$. The well-known Total Coloring Conjecture (TCC) says that every graph with maximum degree $Δ$ admits a total coloring with at most $Δ+ 2$ colors. A graph is {\em $1$-toroidal} if it can be drawn in torus such that every edge crosses at most one other edge. In this paper, we investigate the total coloring of $1$-toroidal graphs, and prove that the TCC holds for the $1$-toroidal graphs with maximum degree at least~$11$ and some restrictions on the triangles. Consequently, if $G$ is a $1$-toroidal graph with maximum degree $Δ$ at least~$11$ and without adjacent triangles, then $G$ admits a total coloring with at most $Δ+ 2$ colors.

The Fiedler value $λ_2$, also known as algebraic connectivity, is the second smallest Laplacian eigenvalue of a graph. We study the maximum Fiedler value among all planar graphs $G$ with $n$ vertices, denoted by $λ_{2\max}$, and we show the bounds $2+Θ(\frac{1}{n^2}) \leq λ_{2\max} \leq 2+O(\frac{1}{n})$. We also provide bounds on the maximum Fiedler value for the following classes of planar graphs: Bipartite planar graphs, bipartite planar graphs with minimum vertex degree~3, and outerplanar graphs. Furthermore, we derive almost tight bounds on $λ_{2\max}$ for two more classes of graphs, those of bounded genus and $K_h$-minor-free graphs.
On the combinatorics of suffix arrays

We prove several combinatorial properties of suffix arrays, including a characterization of suffix arrays through a bijection with a certain well-defined class of permutations. Our approach is based on the characterization of Burrows-Wheeler arrays given in [1], that we apply by reducing suffix sorting to cyclic shift sorting through the use of an additional sentinel symbol. We show that the characterization of suffix arrays for a special case of binary alphabet given in [2] easily follows from our characterization. Based on our results, we also provide simple proofs for the enumeration results for suffix arrays, obtained in [3]. Our approach to characterizing suffix arrays is the first that exploits their relationship with Burrows-Wheeler permutations.
Counting Proper Mergings of Chains and Antichains

A proper merging of two disjoint quasi-ordered sets $P$ and $Q$ is a quasi-order on the union of $P$ and $Q$ such that the restriction to $P$ and $Q$ yields the original quasi-order again and such that no elements of $P$ and $Q$ are identified. In this article, we consider the cases where $P$ and $Q$ are chains, where $P$ and $Q$ are antichains, and where $P$ is an antichain and $Q$ is a chain. We give formulas that determine the number of proper mergings in all three cases, and introduce two new bijections from proper mergings of two chains to plane partitions and from proper mergings of an antichain and a chain to monotone colorings of complete bipartite digraphs. Additionally, we use these bijections to count the Galois connections between two chains, and between a chain and a Boolean lattice respectively.

Let $G$ be a graph embedded on a surface $S_\varepsilon$ with Euler genus $\varepsilon > 0$, and let $P\subseteq V(G)$ be a set of vertices mutually at distance at least 4 apart. Suppose all vertices of $G$ have $H(\varepsilon)$-lists and the vertices of $P$ are precolored, where $H(\varepsilon)=\Big\lfloor\frac{7 + \sqrt{24\varepsilon + 1}}{2}\Big\rfloor$ is the Heawood number. We show that the coloring of $P$ extends to a list-coloring of $G$ and that the distance bound of 4 is best possible. Our result provides an answer to an analogous question of Albertson about extending a precoloring of a set of mutually distant vertices in a planar graph to a 5-list-coloring of the graph and generalizes a result of Albertson and Hutchinson to list-coloring extensions on surfaces.
The inverse Erdos-Heilbronn Problem for restricted set addition in finite groups
We provide a survey of results concerning both the direct and inverse problems to the Cauchy-Davenport theorem and Erdos-Heilbronn problem in Additive Combinatorics. We prove a slight extension to an inverse theorem of Dias da Silva-Hamidoune in Z/pZ, and we present a counterexample to an open conjecture concerning the inverse Erdos-Heilbronn problem in nonabelian groups.
