Linear Programming Relaxations of Quadratically Constrained Quadratic Programs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate the use of linear programming tools for solving semidefinite programming relaxations of quadratically constrained quadratic problems. Classes of valid linear inequalities are presented, including sparse PSD cuts, and principal minors PSD cuts. Computational results based on instances from the literature are presented.

A new approach to the results of Kövari, Sós, and Turán concerning rectangle-free subsets of the grid
Published in Integers, 2012, Vol. 12, #A62 • Search Publication
For positive integers $m$ and $n$, define $f(m,n)$ to be the smallest integer such that any subset $A$ of the $m \times n$ integer grid with $|A| \geq f(m,n)$ contains a rectangle; that is, there are $x\in [m]$ and $y \in [n]$ and $d_{1},d_{2} \in \mathbb{Z}^{+}$ such that all four points $(x,y)$, $(x+d_{1},y)$, $(x,y+d_{2})$, and $(x+d_{1},y+d_{2})$ are contained in $A$. In \cite{kovarisosturan}, Kövari, Sós, and Turán showed that $\dlim_{k \to \infty}\dfrac{f(k,k)}{k^{3/2}} = 1$. They also showed that whenever $p$ is a prime number, $f(p^{2},p^{2}+p) = p^{2}(p+1)+1$. We recover their asymptotic result and strengthen the second, providing cleaner proofs which exploit a connection to projective planes, first noticed by Mendelsohn in \cite{mendelsohn87}. We also provide an explicit lower bound for $f(k,k)$ which holds for all $k$.

Geometric Influences II: Correlation Inequalities and Noise Sensitivity
Published • View Publication • BIB
In a recent paper, we presented a new definition of influences in product spaces of continuous distributions, and showed that analogues of the most fundamental results on discrete influences, such as the KKL theorem, hold for the new definition in Gaussian space. In this paper we prove Gaussian analogues of two of the central applications of influences: Talagrand's lower bound on the correlation of increasing subsets of the discrete cube, and the Benjamini-Kalai-Schramm (BKS) noise sensitivity theorem. We then use the Gaussian results to obtain analogues of Talagrand's bound for all discrete probability spaces and to reestablish analogues of the BKS theorem for biased two-point product spaces.

The Minor inequalities in the description of the Set Covering Polyhedron of Circulant Matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this work we give a complete description of the set covering polyhedron of circulant matrices $C^k_{sk}$ with $s = 2,3$ and $k\geq 3 $ by linear inequalities. In particular, we prove that every non boolean facet defining inequality is associated with a circulant minor of the matrix. We also give a polynomial time separation algorithm for inequalities involved in the description.

Cycles and sorting index for matchings and restricted permutations
We prove that the Mahonian-Stirling pairs of permutation statistics $(\sor, \cyc)$ and $(\inv, \mathrm{rlmin})$ are equidistributed on the set of permutations that correspond to arrangements of $n$ non-atacking rooks on a Ferrers board with $n$ rows and $n$ columns. The proofs are combinatorial and use bijections between matchings and Dyck paths and a new statistic, sorting index for matchings, that we define. We also prove a refinement of this equidistribution result which describes the minimal elements in the permutation cycles and the right-to-left minimum letters. Moreover, we define a sorting index for bicolored matchings and use it to show analogous equidistribution results for restricted permutations of type $B_n$ and $D_n$.

A method to determine algebraically integral Cayley digraphs on finite Abelian group
Published in Contributions to Discrete Mathematics,Vol. 15 No. 2 (2020) • View Publication • BIB
Researchers in the past have studied eigenvalues of Cayley digraphs or graphs. We are interested in characterizing Cayley digraphs on a finite Abelian group G whose eigenvalues are algebraic integers in a given number field K. And we succeed in finding a method to do so by proving Theorem 1. Also, the number of such Cayley digraphs is computed.

Counting Dyck paths by area and rank
Published • View Publication • BIB
The set of Dyck paths of length $2n$ inherits a lattice structure from a bijection with the set of noncrossing partitions with the usual partial order. In this paper, we study the joint distribution of two statistics for Dyck paths: \emph{area} (the area under the path) and \emph{rank} (the rank in the lattice). While area for Dyck paths has been studied, pairing it with this rank function seems new, and we get an interesting $(q,t)$-refinement of the Catalan numbers. We present two decompositions of the corresponding generating function: one refines an identity of Carlitz and Riordan; the other refines the notion of $γ$-nonnegativity, and is based on a decomposition of the lattice of noncrossing partitions due to Simion and Ullman. Further, Biane's correspondence and a result of Stump allow us to conclude that the joint distribution of area and rank for Dyck paths equals the joint distribution of length and reflection length for the permutations lying below the $n$-cycle $(12...n)$ in the absolute order on the symmetric group.

The Asymptotic Bound of the Lubell Function for Diamond-free Families
For a family of subsets of $[n]:={1,2,...,n}$, the Lubell function is defined as $\hb_n(\F):=\sum_{F\in\F}\binom{n}{|F|}^{-1}$. In \cite{GriLiLu}, Griggs, Lu, and the author conjectured that if a family $\F$ of subset of $[n]$ does not contain four distinct sets $A$, $B$, $C$ and $D$ forming a diamond, namely $A\subset B\cap C$ and $B\cup C\subset D$, then $\hb_n(\F)\le 2+\lfloor\frac{n^2}{4}\rfloor/(n^2-n)$. Moreover, the upped bound is achieved by three types of families. In this paper, we prove the upper bound in the conjecture is asymptotically correct. In addition, we give some results related to the problem of maximizing the Lubell function for the poset-free families.

Number of walks and degree powers in a graph
Published in Discrete Math. 309 (2009), 2613-2614 • View Publication • BIB
This note deals with the relationship between the total number of $k$-walks in a graph, and the sum of the $k$-th powers of its vertex degrees. In particular, it is shown that the the number of all $k$-walks is upper bounded by the sum of the $k$-th powers of the degrees.

We present techniques for obtaining a generating function for the central coefficients of a triangle $T(n,k)$, which is given by the expression $[xH(x)]^k=\sum_{n\geqslant k} T(n,k)x^n$, $H(0)\neq 0$. We also prove certain theorems for solving direct and inverse problems.

On the multiple Borsuk numbers of sets
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Borsuk number of a set S of diameter d >0 in Euclidean n-space is the smallest value of m such that S can be partitioned into m sets of diameters less than d. Our aim is to generalize this notion in the following way: The k-fold Borsuk number of such a set S is the smallest value of m such that there is a k-fold cover of S with m sets of diameters less than d. In this paper we characterize the k-fold Borsuk numbers of sets in the Euclidean plane, give bounds for those of centrally symmetric sets, smooth bodies and convex bodies of constant width, and examine them for finite point sets in the Euclidean 3-space.

Permutations all of whose patterns of a given length are distinct
Published • View Publication • BIB
For each integer k >= 2, let F(k) denote the largest n for which there exists a permutation σ\in S_n, all of whose patterns of length k are distinct. We prove that F(k) = k + \lfloor \sqrt{2k-3} \rfloor + e_k, where e_k \in {-1,0} for every k. Suggestions for further investigations along these lines are discussed.

Formulating Szemerédi's Theorem in Terms of Ultrafilters
Van der Waerden's theorem asserts that if you color the natural numbers with, say, five different colors, then you can always find arbitrarily long sequences of numbers that have the same color and that form an arithmetic progression. Szemerédi's theorem generalizes this statement and asserts that every subset of natural numbers with positive density contains arithmetic progressions of arbitrary length. Van der Waerden's theorem can be proven using elementary combinatorics, but it is also possible to give an interpretation and a short proof in terms of ultrafilters and the Stone-Čech compactification βN. This diploma thesis gives an interpretation of Szemerédi's theorem in terms of ultrafilters as well. In particular, van der Waerden's theorem is equivalent to the existence of a single ultrafilter with special properties and we will show that Szemerédi's theorem is equivalent to the fact that with respect to a counting measure on βN, almost all ultrafilters have these properties.

Mantel's Theorem for random graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a graph $G$, denote by $t(G)$ (resp. $b(G)$) the maximum size of a triangle-free (resp. bipartite) subgraph of $G$. Of course $t(G) \geq b(G)$ for any $G$, and a classic result of Mantel from 1907 (the first case of Turán's Theorem) says that equality holds for complete graphs. A natural question, first considered by Babai, Simonovits and Spencer about 20 years ago is, when (i.e. for what $p=p(n)$) is the "Erdős-Rényi" random graph $G=G(n,p)$ likely to satisfy $t(G) = b(G)$? We show that this is true if $p>C n^{-1/2} \log^{1/2}n $ for a suitable constant $C$, which is best possible up to the value of $C$.
The Sorting Index and Permutation Codes
Published • View Publication • BIB
In the combinatorial study of the coefficients of a bivariate polynomial that generalizes both the length and the reflection length generating functions for finite Coxeter groups, Petersen introduced a new Mahonian statistic $sor$, called the sorting index. Petersen proved that the pairs of statistics $(sor, cyc)$ and $(inv,rl\textrm{-}min)$ have the same joint distribution over the symmetric group, and asked for a combinatorial proof of this fact. In answer to the question of Petersen, we observe a connection between the sorting index and the B-code of a permutation defined by Foata and Han, and we show that the bijection of Foata and Han serves the purpose of mapping $(inv,rl\textrm{-}min)$ to $(sor, cyc)$. We also give a type $B$ analogue of the Foata-Han bijection, and we derive the quidistribution of $(inv_B,{\rm Lmap_B},{\rm Rmil_B})$ and $(sor_B,{\rm Lmap_B},{\rm Cyc_B})$ over signed permutations. So we get a combinatorial interpretation of Petersen's equidistribution of $(inv_B,nmin_B)$ and $(sor_B,l_B')$. Moreover, we show that the six pairs of set-valued statistics $\rm (Cyc_B,Rmil_B)$, $\rm(Cyc_B,Lmap_B)$, $\rm(Rmil_B,Lmap_B)$, $\rm(Lmap_B,Rmil_B)$, $\rm(Lmap_B,Cyc_B)$ and $\rm(Rmil_B,Cyc_B)$ are equidistributed over signed permutations. For Coxeter groups of type $D$, Petersen showed that the two statistics $inv_D$ and $sor_D$ are equidistributed. We introduce two statistics $nmin_D$ and $\tilde{l}_D'$ for elements of $D_n$ and we prove that the two pairs of statistics $(inv_D,nmin_D)$ and $(sor_D,\tilde{l}_D')$ are equidistributed.

Polytope numbers and their properties
Polytope numbers for a polytope are a sequence of nonnegative integers that are defined by the facial information of a polytope. Every polygon is triangulable and a higher dimensional analogue of this fact states that every polytope is triangulable, namely, every polytope can be decomposed into simplexes. Thus it may be possible to represent polytope numbers by sums of simplex numbers. We analyzes a special type of triangulation, called pointed triangulation, and develops several methods to represent polytope numbers by sums of simplex numbers.

Simultaneous Embeddings with Vertices Mapping to Pre-Specified Points
Published • View Publication • BIB
We discuss the problem of embedding graphs in the plane with restrictions on the vertex mapping. In particular, we introduce a technique for drawing planar graphs with a fixed vertex mapping that bounds the number of times edges bend. An immediate consequence of this technique is that any planar graph can be drawn with a fixed vertex mapping so that edges map to piecewise linear curves with at most $3n + O(1)$ bends each. By considering uniformly random planar graphs, we show that $2n + O(1)$ bends per edge is sufficient on average. To further utilize our technique, we consider simultaneous embeddings of $k$ uniformly random planar graphs with vertices mapping to a fixed, common point set. We explain how to achieve such a drawing so that edges map to piecewise linear curves with $O(n^{1-1/k})$ bends each, which holds with overwhelming probability. This result improves upon the previously best known result of O(n) bends per edge for the case where $k \geq 2$. Moreover, we give a lower bound on the number of bends that matches our upper bound, proving our results are optimal.
