Benjamini--Schramm continuity of root moments of graph polynomials

Recently, M.\ Abért and T.\ Hubai studied the following problem. The chromatic measure of a finite simple graph is defined to be the uniform distribution on its chromatic roots. Abért and Hubai proved that for a Benjamini-Schramm convergent sequence of finite graphs, the chromatic measures converge in holomorphic moments. They also showed that the normalized log of the chromatic polynomial converges to a harmonic real function outside a bounded disc.
In this paper we generalize their work to a wide class of graph polynomials, namely, multiplicative graph polynomials of bounded exponential type. A special case of our results is that for any fixed complex number $v_0$ the measures arising from the Tutte polynomial $Z_{G_n}(z,v_0)$ converge in holomorphic moments if the sequence $(G_n)$ of finite graphs is Benjamini--Schramm convergent. This answers a question of Abért and Hubai in the affirmative. Even in the original case of the chromatic polynomial, our proof is considerably simpler.
Interlacement in 4-regular graphs: a new approach using nonsymmetric matrices

Let F be a 4-regular graph with an Euler system C. We introduce a simple way to modify the interlacement matrix of C so that every circuit partition P of F has an associated modified interlacement matrix M(C,P). If C and C' are Euler systems of F then M(C,C') and M(C',C) are inverses, and for any circuit partition P, M(C',P)=M(C',C)M(C,P). This machinery allows for short proofs of several results regarding the linear algebra of interlacement.

A global offensive alliance in a graph $G$ is a set $S$ of vertices with the property that every vertex not belonging to $S$ has at least one more neighbor in $S$ than it has outside of $S$. The global offensive alliance number of $G$, $γ_o(G)$, is the minimum cardinality of a global offensive alliance in $G$. A set $S$ of vertices of a graph $G$ is a dominating set for $G$ if every vertex not belonging to $S$ has at least one neighbor in $S$. The domination number of $G$, $γ(G)$, is the minimum cardinality of a dominating set of $G$. In this work we obtain closed formulas for the global offensive alliance number of several families of Cartesian product graphs, we also prove that $γ_o(G\square H)\ge \frac{γ(G)γ_o(H)}{2}$ for any graphs $G$ and $H$ and we show that if $G$ has an efficient dominating set, then $γ_o(G\square H)\ge γ(G)γ_o(H).$ Moreover, we present a Vizing-like conjecture for the global offensive alliance number and we prove it for several families of graphs.
On the strong metric dimension of corona product graphs and join graphs

Let $G$ be a connected graph. A vertex $w$ strongly resolves a pair $u$, $v$ of vertices of $G$ if there exists some shortest $u-w$ path containing $v$ or some shortest $v-w$ path containing $u$. A set $W$ of vertices is a strong resolving set for $G$ if every pair of vertices of $G$ is strongly resolved by some vertex of $W$. The smallest cardinality of a strong resolving set for $G$ is called the strong metric dimension of $G$. It is known that the problem of computing this invariant is NP-hard. It is therefore desirable to reduce the problem of computing the strong metric dimension of product graphs, to the problem of computing some parameter of the factor graphs. We show that the problem of finding the strong metric dimension of the corona product $G\odot H$, of two graphs $G$ and $H$, can be transformed to the problem of finding certain clique number of $H$. As a consequence of the study we show that if $H$ has diameter two, then the strong metric dimension of $G\odot H$ is obtained from the strong metric dimension of $H$ and, if $H$ is not connected or its diameter is greater than two, then the strong metric dimension of $G\odot H$ is obtained from the strong metric dimension of $K_1\odot H$, where $K_1$ denotes the trivial graph. The strong metric dimension of join graphs is also studied.
Henneberg constructions and covers of cone-Laman graphs
We give Henneberg-type constructions for three families of sparse colored graphs arising in the rigidity theory of periodic and other forced symmetric frameworks. The proof method, which works with Laman-sparse finite covers of colored graphs highlights the connection between these sparse colored families and the well-studied matroidal (k, l)-sparse families.

The bondage number $b(G)$ of a nonempty graph $G$ is the cardinality of a smallest set of edges whose removal from $G$ results in a graph with domination number greater than the domination number of $G$. Here we study the bondage number of some grid-like graphs. In this sense, we obtain some bounds or exact values of the bondage number of some strong product and direct product of two paths.

Given a set $S$ of $n$ points in the plane, a \emph{radial ordering} of $S$ with respect to a point $p$ (not in $S$) is a clockwise circular ordering of the elements in $S$ by angle around $p$. If $S$ is two-colored, a \emph{colored radial ordering} is a radial ordering of $S$ in which only the colors of the points are considered. In this paper, we obtain bounds on the number of distinct non-colored and colored radial orderings of $S$. We assume a strong general position on $S$, not three points are collinear and not three lines---each passing through a pair of points in $S$---intersect in a point of $\R^2\setminus S$. In the colored case, $S$ is a set of $2n$ points partitioned into $n$ red and $n$ blue points, and $n$ is even. We prove that: the number of distinct radial orderings of $S$ is at most $O(n^4)$ and at least $Ω(n^3)$; the number of colored radial orderings of $S$ is at most $O(n^4)$ and at least $Ω(n)$; there exist sets of points with $Θ(n^4)$ colored radial orderings and sets of points with only $O(n^2)$ colored radial orderings.

We propose an elemantary approach to Zudilin's q-question about Schmidt's problem [Electron. J. Combin. 11 (2004), #R22], which has been solved in a previous paper [Acta Arith. 127 (2007), 17--31]. The new approach is based on a q-analogue of our recent result in [J. Number Theory 132 (2012), 1731--1740] derived from q-Pfaff-Saalschutz identity.

A grid drawing of a graph maps vertices to grid points and edges to line segments that avoid grid points representing other vertices. We show that there is a number of grid points that some line segment of an arbitrary grid drawing must intersect. This number is closely connected to the chromatic number. Second, we study how many columns we need to draw a graph in the grid, introducing some new $\NP$-complete problems. Finally, we show that any planar graph has a planar grid drawing where every line segment contains exactly two grid points. This result proves conjectures asked by David Flores-Peñaloza and Francisco Javier Zaragoza Martinez.

We describe two different approaches to making systematic classifications of plane lattice polygons, and recover the toric codes they generate, over small fields, where these match or exceed the best known minimum distance. This includes a [36,19,12]-code over F_7 whose minimum distance 12 exceeds that of all previously known codes.

We discuss generalizations of some results on lattice polygons to certain piecewise linear loops which may have a self-intersection but have vertices in the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^2$. We first prove a formula on the rotation number of a unimodular sequence in $\mathbb{Z}^2$. This formula implies the generalized twelve-point theorem in [12]. We then introduce the notion of lattice multi-polygons which is a generalization of lattice polygons, state the generalized Pick's formula and discuss the classification of Ehrhart polynomials of lattice multi-polygons and also of several natural subfamilies of lattice multi-polygons.

The classical Eulerian polynomials can be expanded in the basis $t^{k-1}(1+t)^{n+1-2k}$ ($1\leq k\leq\lfloor (n+1)/2\rfloor$) with positive integral coefficients. This formula implies both the symmetry and the unimodality of the Eulerian polynomials. In this paper, we prove a $q$-analogue of this expansion for Carlitz's $q$-Eulerian polynomials as well as a similar formula for Chow-Gessel's $q$-Eulerian polynomials of type $B$. We shall give some applications of these two formulae, which involve two new sequences of polynomials in the variable $q$ with positive integral coefficients. An open problem is to give a combinatorial interpretation for these polynomials.
Enumeration of edges in some lattices of paths
We enumerate the edges in the Hasse diagram of several lattices arising in the combinatorial context of lattice paths. Specifically, we will consider the case of Dyck, Grand Dyck, Motzkin, Grand Motzkin, Schröder and Grand Schröder lattices. Finally, we give a general formula for the number of edges in an arbitrary Young lattice (which can be interpreted in a natural way as a lattice of paths).

We determine a general formula to compute the number of saturated chains in Dyck lattices, and we apply it to find the number of saturated chains of length 2 and 3. We also compute what we call the Hasse index (of order 2 and 3) of Dyck lattices, which is the ratio between the total number of saturated chains (of length 2 and 3) and the cardinality of the underlying poset.

We present explicit constructions of centrally symmetric 2-neighborly d-dimensional polytopes with about 3^{d/2} = (1.73)^d vertices and of centrally symmetric k-neighborly d-polytopes with about 2^{c_k d} vertices where c_k=3/20 k^2 2^k. Using this result, we construct for a fixed k > 1 and arbitrarily large d and N, a centrally symmetric d-polytope with N vertices that has at least (1-k^2 (gamma_k)^d) binom(N, k) faces of dimension k-1, where gamma_2=1/\sqrt{3} = 0.58 and gamma_k = 2^{-3/{20k^2 2^k}} for k > 2. Another application is a construction of a set of 3^{d/2 -1}-1 points in R^d every two of which are strictly antipodal as well as a construction of an n-point set (for an arbitrarily large n) in R^d with many pairs of strictly antipodal points. The two latter results significantly improve the previous bounds by Talata, and Makai and Martini, respectively.

We study three mixing properties of a graph: large algebraic connectivity, large Cheeger constant (isoperimetric number) and large spectral gap from 1 for the second largest eigenvalue of the transition probability matrix of the random walk on the graph. We prove equivalence of this properties (in some sense). We give estimates for the probability for a random graph to satisfy these properties. In addition, we present asymptotic formulas for the numbers of Eulerian orientations and Eulerian circuits in an undirected simple graph.
Pencils of lines in generalized Laguerre spaces
In the paper we characterize subspaces and pencils of lines of generalized (and multidimensional) Laguerre spaces and we consider definability of the structure of "conic" pencils in the Grassmann space of 1-subspaces. We also study definability of the underlying Laguerre geometry in terms of structures of pencils of lines for some, more interesting, systems of pencils.

Bliem and Kousidis (arXiv:1109.4624) recently considered a family of random variables whose distributions are given by the generalized Galois numbers (after normalization). We give probabilistic interpretations of these random variables, using inversions in random words, random lattice paths and random Ferrers diagrams, and use these to give new proofs of limit theorems as well as some further limit results.
