Greedy Galois Games

We show that two duelers with similar, lousy shooting skills (a.k.a. Galois duelers) will choose to take turns firing in accordance with the famous Thue-Morse sequence if they greedily demand their chances to fire as soon as the other's a priori probability of winning exceeds their own. This contrasts with a result from the approximation theory of complex functions that says what more patient duelers would do, if they really cared about being as fair as possible. We note a consequent interpretation of the Thue-Morse sequence in terms of certain expansions in fractional bases close to, but greater than, 1.

Hajos' conjecture that every simple even graph on $n$ vertices can be decomposed into at most $(n-1)/2$ cycles (see L. Lovasz, On covering of graphs, in: P. Erdos, G.O.H. Katona (Eds.), Theory of Graphs, Academic Press, New York, 1968, pp. 231 - 236). Let $f(n)$ be the maximum number of edges in a graph on $n$ vertices in which no two cycles have the same length. P. Erdos raised the problem of determining $f(n)$ (see J.A. Bondy and U.S.R. Murty, Graph Theory with Applications (Macmillan, New York, 1976), p.247, Problem 11).
Given a graph $H$, what is the maximum number of edges of a graph with $n$ vertices not containing $H$ as a subgraph? This number is denoted $ex(n,H)$, and is known as the Turan number. P. Erdos conjectured that there exists a positive constant $c$ such that $ex(n,C_{2k})\geq cn^{1+1/k}$(see P. Erdos, Some unsolved problems in graph theory and combinatorial analysis, Combinatorial Mathematics and its Applications (Proc. Conf., Oxford, 1969), pp. 97--109, Academic Press, London, 1971). This paper summarizes some results on these problems and the conjectures that relate to these. We do not think Hajós conjecture is true.
Interval edge-colorings of cubic graphs

An edge-coloring of a multigraph G with colors 1,2,...,t is called an interval t-coloring if all colors are used, and the colors of edges incident to any vertex of G are distinct and form an interval of integers. In this paper we prove that if G is a connected cubic multigraph (a connected cubic graph) that admits an interval t-coloring, then t\leq |V(G)| +1 (t\leq |V(G)|), where V(G) is the set of vertices of G. Moreover, if G is a connected cubic graph, G\neq K_{4}, and G has an interval t-coloring, then t\leq |V(G)| -1. We also show that these upper bounds are sharp. Finally, we prove that if G is a bipartite subcubic multigraph, then G has an interval edge-coloring with no more than four colors.

An interval t-coloring of a graph G is a proper edge-coloring of G with colors 1,2,...,t such that at least one edge of G is colored by i, i=1,2,...,t, and the edges incident to each vertex v\in V(G) are colored by d_{G}(v) consecutive colors, where d_{G}(v) is the degree of the vertex v in G. In this paper interval edge-colorings of various graph products are investigated.
Describing West-3-stack-sortable permutations with permutation patterns
We describe a new method for finding patterns in permutations that produce a given pattern after the permutation has been passed once through a stack. We use this method to describe West-3-stack-sortable permutations, that is, permutations that are sorted by three passes through a stack. We also show how the method can be applied to the bubble-sort operator. The method requires the use of mesh patterns introduced by Brändén and Claesson (2011), as well as a new type of generalized pattern we call a decorated pattern.

This is a continuation of the article with the same title. In this paper, the family H is the same as in the previous paper "On Graphs with the Smallest Eigenvalue at Least $-1-\sqrt{2}$, part I". The main result is that a minimal graph which is not an H -line graph, is just isomorphic to one of the 38 graphs found by computer.
On $r$-colorability of random hypergraphs
The work deals with the threshold probablity for r-colorability in the binomial model H(n,k,p) of a random k-uniform hypergraph. We prove a lower bound for this threshold which improves the previously known results in the wide range of the parameters r=r(n) and k=k(n).

We examine the topology of the clique complexes of the graphs of weakly and strongly separated subsets of the set $[n]=\{1,2,...,n\}$, which, after deleting all cone points, we denote by $\hatΔ_{ws}(n)$ and $\hatΔ_{ss}(n)$, respectively. In particular, we find that $\hatΔ_{ws}(n)$ is contractible for $n\geq4$, while $\hatΔ_{ss}(n)$ is homotopy equivalent to a sphere of dimension $n-3$. We also show that our homotopy equivalences are equivariant with respect to the group generated by two particular symmetries of $\hatΔ_{ws}(n)$ and $\hatΔ_{ss}(n)$: one induced by the set complementation action on subsets of $[n]$ and another induced by the action on subsets of $[n]$ which replaces each $k\in[n]$ by $n+1-k$.
Note on rainbow connection number of dense graphs
An edge-colored graph $G$ is rainbow connected if any two vertices are connected by a path whose edges have distinct colors. The rainbow connection number of a connected graph $G$, denoted by $rc(G)$, is the smallest number of colors that are needed in order to make $G$ rainbow connected. Following an idea of Caro et al., in this paper we also investigate the rainbow connection number of dense graphs. We show that for $k\geq 2$, if $G$ is a non-complete graph of order $n$ with minimum degree $δ(G)\geq \frac{n}{2}-1+log_{k}{n}$, or minimum degree-sum $σ_{2}(G)\geq n-2+2log_{k}{n}$, then $rc(G)\leq k$; if $G$ is a graph of order $n$ with diameter 2 and $δ(G)\geq 2(1+log_{\frac{k^{2}}{3k-2}}{k})log_{k}{n}$, then $rc(G)\leq k$. We also show that if $G$ is a non-complete bipartite graph of order $n$ and any two vertices in the same vertex class have at least $2log_{\frac{k^{2}}{3k-2}}{k}log_{k}{n}$ common neighbors in the other class, then $rc(G)\leq k$.
On partitions avoiding right crossings
Recently, Chen et al. derived the generating function for partitions avoiding right nestings and posed the problem of finding the generating function for partitions avoiding right crossings. In this paper, we derive the generating function for partitions avoiding right crossings via an intermediate structure of partial matchings avoiding 2-right crossings and right nestings. We show that there is a bijection between partial matchings avoiding 2-right crossing and right nestings and partitions avoiding right crossings.
$\ell^p$-distortion and $p$-spectral gap of finite regular graphs

We give a lower bound for the $\ell^p$-distortion $c_p(X)$ of finite graphs $X$, depending on the first eigenvalue $λ_1^{(p)}(X)$ of the $p$-Laplacian and the maximal displacement of permutations of vertices. For a $k$-regular vertex-transitive graph it takes the form $c_p(X)^{p}\geq diam(X)^{p}λ_{1}^{(p)}(X)/2^{p-1}k$. This bound is optimal for expander families and, for $p=2$, it gives the exact value for cycles and hypercubes. As a new application we give a non-trivial lower bound for the $\ell^2$-distortion of a family of Cayley graphs of $SL_n(q)$ ($q$ fixed, $n\geq 2$) with respect to a standard two-element generating set.
A proof of Lovász's theorem on maximal lattice-free sets

Let $K$ be a maximal lattice-free set in $\mathbb{R}^d$, that is, $K$ is convex and closed subset of $\mathbb{R}^d$, the interior of $K$ does not cointain points of $\mathbb{Z}^d$ and $K$ is inclusion-maximal with respect to the above properties. A result of Lovász assert that if $K$ is $d$-dimensional, then $K$ is a polyhedron with at most $2^d$ facets, and the recession cone of $K$ is spanned by vectors from $\mathbb{Z}^d$. A first complete proof of mentioned Lovász's result has been published in a paper of Basu, Conforti, Cornuéjols and Zambelli (where the authors use Dirichlet's approximation as a tool). The aim of this note is to give another proof of this result. Our proof relies on Minkowki's first fundamental theorem from the gemetry of numbers. We remark that the result of Lovász is relevant in integer and mixed-integer optimization.
On Complete Intersection toric ideals of graphs

We characterize the graphs $G$ for which their toric ideals $I_G$ are complete intersections. In particular we prove that for a connected graph $G$ such that $I_G$ is complete intersection all of its blocks are bipartite except of at most two. We prove that toric ideals of graphs which are complete intersections are circuit ideals. The generators of the toric ideal correspond to even cycles of $G$ except of at most one generator, which corresponds to two edge disjoint odd cycles joint at a vertex or with a path. We prove that the blocks of the graph satisfy the odd cycle condition. Finally we characterize all complete intersection toric ideals of graphs which are normal.
New Bounds on the Minimum Density of a Vertex Identifying Code for the Infinite Hexagonal Grid

For a graph, $G$, and a vertex $v \in V(G)$, let $N[v]$ be the set of vertices adjacent to and including $v$. A set $D \subseteq V(G)$ is a vertex identifying code if for any two distinct vertices $v_1, v_2 \in V(G)$, the vertex sets $N[v_1] \cap D$ and $N[v_2] \cap D$ are distinct and non-empty. We consider the minimum density of a vertex identifying code for the infinite hexagonal grid. In 2000, Cohen et al. constructed two codes with a density of $3/7 \approx 0.428571$, and this remains the best known upper bound. Until now, the best known lower bound was $12/29 \approx 0.413793$ and was proved by Cranston and Yu in 2009. We present three new codes with a density of 3/7, and we improve the lower bound to $5/12 \approx 0.416667$.
On a Problem of Gromov about Generalizing Alexandrov-Fenchel Inequality
In this note we give an answer to a question about mixed volumes asked by Gromov in his paper "Convex Sets and Kahler Manifolds". For reader's convenience we remind definitions and some of the properties of mixed volumes and mixed discriminants.
Energy Aware Scheduling for Weighted Completion Time and Weighted Tardiness

The ever increasing adoption of mobile devices with limited energy storage capacity, on the one hand, and more awareness of the environmental impact of massive data centres and server pools, on the other hand, have both led to an increased interest in energy management algorithms.
The main contribution of this paper is to present several new constant factor approximation algorithms for energy aware scheduling problems where the objective is to minimize weighted completion time plus the cost of the energy consumed, in the one machine non-preemptive setting, while allowing release dates and deadlines.Unlike previous known algorithms these new algorithms can handle general job-dependent energy cost functions, extending the application of these algorithms to settings outside the typical CPU-energy one. These new settings include problems where in addition, or instead, of energy costs we also have maintenance costs, wear and tear, replacement costs, etc., which in general depend on the speed at which the machine runs but also depend on the types of jobs processed. Our algorithms also extend to approximating weighted tardiness plus energy cost, an inherently more difficult problem that has not been addressed in the literature.

We construct many nonpolytopal nonsimplicial Gorenstein* meet semi-lattices with nonnegative toric g-vector, supporting a conjecture of Stanley. These are formed as Bier spheres over the face posets of multiplexes, polytopes constructed by Bisztriczky as generalizations of simplices.
The Petersen graph is the smallest 3-cop-win graph
In the game of \emph{cops and robbers} on a graph $G = (V,E)$, $k$ cops try to catch a robber. On the cop turn, each cop may move to a neighboring vertex or remain in place. On the robber's turn, he moves similarly. The cops win if there is some time at which a cop is at the same vertex as the robber. Otherwise, the robber wins. The minimum number of cops required to catch the robber is called the \emph{cop number} of $G$, and is denoted $c(G)$. Let $m_k$ be the minimum order of a connected graph satisfying $c(G) \geq k$. Recently, Baird and Bonato determined via computer search that $m_3=10$ and that this value is attained uniquely by the Petersen graph. Herein, we give a self-contained mathematical proof of this result. Along the way, we give some characterizations of graphs with $c(G) >2$ and very high maximum degree.
Simultaneous large deviations for the shape of Young diagrams associated with random words

We investigate the large deviations of the shape of the random RSK Young diagrams associated with a random word of size $n$ whose letters are independently drawn from an alphabet of size $m=m(n)$. When the letters are drawn uniformly and when both $n$ and $m$ converge together to infinity, $m$ not growing too fast with respect to $n$, the large deviations of the shape of the Young diagrams are shown to be the same as that of the spectrum of the traceless GUE. In the non-uniform case, a control of both highest probabilities will ensure that the length of the top row of the diagram satisfies a large deviation principle. In either case, both speeds and rate functions are identified. To complete our study, non-asymptotic concentration bounds for the length of the top row of the diagrams, that is, for the length of the longest increasing subsequence of the random word are also given for both models.

In this investigation of character tables of finite groups we study basic sets and associated representation theoretic data for complementary sets of conjugacy classes. For the symmetric groups we find unexpected properties of characters on restricted sets of conjugacy classes, like beautiful combinatorial determinant formulae for submatrices of the character table and Cartan matrices with respect to basic sets; we observe that similar phenomena occur for the transition matrices between power sum symmetric functions to bounded partitions and the $k$-Schur functions introduced by Lapointe and Morse. Arithmetic properties of the numbers occurring in this context are studied via generating functions.
