Given a finite family F of linear forms with integer coefficients, and a compact abelian group G, an F-free set in G is a measurable set which does not contain solutions to any equation L(x)=0 for L in F. We denote by d_F(G) the supremum of m(A) over F-free sets A in G, where m is the normalized Haar measure on G. Our main result is that, for any such collection F of forms in at least three variables, the sequence d_F(Z_p) converges to d_F(R/Z) as p tends to infinity over primes. This answers an analogue for Z_p of a question that Ruzsa raised about sets of integers.

A New Framework for Network Disruption
Traditional network disruption approaches focus on disconnecting or lengthening paths in the network. We present a new framework for network disruption that attempts to reroute flow through critical vertices via vertex deletion, under the assumption that this will render those vertices vulnerable to future attacks. We define the load on a critical vertex to be the number of paths in the network that must flow through the vertex. We present graph-theoretic and computational techniques to maximize this load, firstly by removing either a single vertex from the network, secondly by removing a subset of vertices.
Computing Tropical Resultants

We fix the supports A=(A_1,...,A_k) of a list of tropical polynomials and define the tropical resultant TR(A) to be the set of choices of coefficients such that the tropical polynomials have a common solution. We prove that TR(A) is the tropicalization of the algebraic variety of solvable systems and that its dimension can be computed in polynomial time. The tropical resultant inherits a fan structure from the secondary fan of the Cayley configuration of A and we present algorithms for the traversal of TR(A) in this structure. We also present a new algorithm for recovering a Newton polytope from the support of its tropical hypersurface. We use this to compute the Newton polytope of the sparse resultant polynomial in the case when TR(A) is of codimension 1. Finally we consider the more general setting of specialized tropical resultants and report on experiments with our implementations.
Tamari lattices and parking functions: proof of a conjecture of F. Bergeron
An m-ballot path of size n is a path on the square grid consisting of north and east unit steps, starting at (0,0), ending at (mn,n), and never going below the line {x=my. The set of these paths can be equipped with a lattice structure, called the m-Tamari lattice and denoted by T_n^(m), which generalizes the usual Tamari lattice T_n obtained when m=1. This lattice was introduced by F. Bergeron in connection with the study of coinvariant spaces. He conjectured several intriguing formulas dealing with the enumeration of intervals in this lattice. One of them states that the number of intervals in T_n^(m) is $$ \frac {m+1}{n(mn+1)} {(m+1)^2 n+m\choose n-1}. $$ This conjecture was proved recently, but in a non-bijective way, while its form strongly suggests a connection with plane trees. Here, we prove another conjecture of Bergeron, which deals with the number of labelled, intervals. An interval [P,Q] of T_n^(m) is labelled, if the north steps of Q are labelled from 1 to n in such a way the labels increase along any sequence of consecutive north steps. We prove that the number of labelled intervals in T_n^(m) is $$ {(m+1)^n(mn+1)^{n-2}}. $$ The form of these numbers suggests a connection with parking functions, but our proof is non-bijective. It is based on a recursive description of intervals, which translates into a functional equation satisfied by the associated generating function. This equation involves a derivative and a divided difference, taken with respect to two additional variables. Solving this equation is the hardest part of the paper. Finding a bijective proof remains an open problem.
A conjecture on independent sets and graph covers
In this article, I present a conjecture on the number of independent sets on graph covers. I also show that the conjecture implies that the partition function of a binary pairwise attractive model is greater than that of the Bethe approximation.

We decompose the $\hat{\mathfrak{sl}}(n)$-module $V(Λ_0) \otimes V(Λ_0)$ and give generating function identities for the outer multiplicities. In the process we discover some seemingly new partition identities in the cases $n=2,3$.
Asymptotics of generalized Galois numbers via affine Kac-Moody algebras

Generalized Galois numbers count the number of flags in vector spaces over finite fields. Asymptotically, as the dimension of the vector space becomes large, we give their exponential growth and determine their initial values. The initial values are expressed analytically in terms of theta functions and Euler's generating function for the partition numbers. Our asymptotic enumeration method is based on a Demazure module limit construction for integrable highest weight representations of affine Kac-Moody algebras. For the classical Galois numbers, that count the number of subspaces in vector spaces over finite fields, the theta functions are Jacobi theta functions. We apply our findings to the asymptotic number of q-ary codes, and conclude with some final remarks about possible future research concerning asymptotic enumerations via limit constructions for affine Kac-Moody algebras.

Buildings of types $\textsf{C}_n$ and $\textsf{D}_n$ are defined by rank $n$ polar spaces. The associated building Grassmannians are polar and half-spin Grassmannians. Apartments in dual polar spaces and half-spin Grassmannians were characterized in \cite{CKS}. We characterize apartments in all polar Grassmannians consisting of non-maximal singular subspaces. This characterization is a partial case of more general results concerning embeddings of polar Johnson graphs in polar Grassmann graphs.

We study the order dimension of the lattice of closed sets for a convex geometry. Further, we prove the existence of large convex geometries realized by planar point sets that have very low order dimension. We show that the planar point set of Erdos and Szekeres from 1961 which is a set of 2^(n-2) points and contains no convex n-gon has order dimension n - 1 and any larger set of points has order dimension strictly larger than n - 1.

We consider partitions of the edge set of a graph G into copies of a fixed graph H and single edges. Let φ_H(n) denote the minimum number p such that any n-vertex G admits such a partition with at most p parts. We show that φ_H(n)=ex(n,K_r)+Θ(biex(n,H)) for χ(H)>2, where biex(n,H) is the extremal number of the decomposition family of H. Since biex(n,H)=O(n^{2-γ}) for some γ>0 this improves on the bound φ_H(n)=ex(n,H)+o(n^2) by Pikhurko and Sousa [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 97 (2007), 1041-1055]. In addition it extends a result of Özkahya and Person [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B, to appear].

We give positive descriptions for certain Schubert structure constants $c_{u,v}^w$ for the full flag variety in Lie types $C$ and $D$. This is accomplished by first observing that a number of the $K=GL(n,\C)$-orbit closures on these flag varieties coincide with Richardson varieties, and then applying a theorem of M. Brion on the decomposition of such an orbit closure in the Schubert basis in terms of paths in the weak order graph.

Unlike the situation in the classical theory of convex polytopes, there is a wealth of semi-regular abstract polytopes, including interesting examples exhibiting some unexpected phenomena. We prove that even an equifacetted semi-regular abstract polytope can have an arbitrary large number of flag orbits or face orbits under its combinatorial automorphism group.
Guaranteed successful strategies for a square achievement game on an n by n grid
At some places (see the references) Martin Erickson describes a certain game:
"Two players alternately write O's (first player) and X's (second player) in the unoccupied cells of an n x n grid. The first player (if any) to occupy four cells at the vertices of a square with horizontal and vertical sides is the winner."
Then he asks "What is the outcome of the game given optimal play?" or
"What is the smallest n such that the first player has a winning strategy?"
For n lower than 3 a win is obviously impossible.
The aim of this article and the additionally (in the source package) provided computer program SQRGAME2 is to give and prove sure strategies for the second player not to lose if n is 3 or 4, and for the first player to win if n is 5.
From double quantum Schubert polynomials to k-double Schur functions via the Toda lattice
We show that the k-double Schur functions defined by the authors, and the quantum double Schubert polynomials studied by Kirillov and Maeno and by Ciocan-Fontanine and Fulton, can be obtained from each other by an explicit rational substitution. The main new ingredient is an explicit computation of Kostant's solution to the Toda lattice in terms of equivariant Schubert classes.

In this paper we will look at the relationship between the intersection number c2 and its diameter for a distance-regular graph. And also, we give some tools to show that a distance-regular graph with large c2 is bipartite, and a tool to show that if kD is too small then the distance-regular graph has to be antipodal.

We study Euclidean designs from the viewpoint of the potential energy. For a finite set in Euclidean space, We formulate a linear programming bound for the potential energy by applying harmonic analysis on a sphere. We also introduce the concept of strong Euclidean designs from the viewpoint of the linear programming bound, and we give a Fisher type inequality for strong Euclidean designs. A finite set on Euclidean space is called a Euclidean a-code if any distinct two points in the set are separated at least by a. As a corollary of the linear programming bound, we give a method to determine an upper bound on the cardinalities of Euclidean a-codes on concentric spheres of given radii. Similarly we also give a method to determine a lower bound on the cardinalities of Euclidean t-designs as an analogue of the linear programming bound.

The concept of identifying codes was introduced by Karpovsky, Chakrabarty and Levitin in 1998. The identifying codes can be applied, for example, to sensor networks. In this paper, we consider as sensors the set Z^2 where one sensor can check its neighbours within Euclidean distance r. We construct tolerant identifying codes in this network that are robust against some changes in the neighbourhood monitored by each sensor. We give bounds for the smallest density of a tolerant identifying code for general values of r and Delta. We also provide infinite families of values (r,Delta) with optimal such codes and study the case of small values of r.
