On Symmetry of Independence Polynomials

An independent set in a graph is a set of pairwise non-adjacent vertices, and alpha(G) is the size of a maximum independent set in the graph G. A matching is a set of non-incident edges, while mu(G) is the cardinality of a maximum matching.
If s_{k} is the number of independent sets of cardinality k in G, then I(G;x)=s_{0}+s_{1}x+s_{2}x^{2}+...+s_{α(G)}x^{α(G)} is called the independence polynomial of G (Gutman and Harary, 1983). If $s_{j}=s_{α-j}$, 0=< j =< alpha(G), then I(G;x) is called symmetric (or palindromic). It is known that the graph G*2K_{1} obtained by joining each vertex of G to two new vertices, has a symmetric independence polynomial (Stevanovic, 1998). In this paper we show that for every graph G and for each non-negative integer k =< mu(G), one can build a graph H, such that: G is a subgraph of H, I(H;x) is symmetric, and I(G*2K_{1};x)=(1+x)^{k}*I(H;x).
Proof of a Conjecture of Helleseth: Maximal Linear Recursive Sequences of Period $2^{2^n}-1$ Never Have Three-Valued Cross-Correlation
We prove a conjecture of Helleseth that claims that for any $n \geq 0$, a pair of binary maximal linear sequences of period $2^{2^n}-1$ can not have a three-valued cross-correlation function.
The generalized weighted probability measure on the symmetric group and the asymptotic behavior of the cycles

The goal of this paper is to analyse the asymptotic behavior of the cycle process and the total number of cycles of weighted and generalized weighted random permutations which are relevant models in physics and which extend the Ewens measure. We combine tools from combinatorics and complex analysis (e.g. singularity analysis of generating functions) to prove that under some analytic conditions (on relevant generating functions) the cycle process converges to a vector of independent Poisson variables and to establish a central limit theorem for the total number of cycles. Our methods allow us to obtain an asymptotic estimate of the characteristic functions of the different random vectors of interest together with an error estimate, thus having a control on the speed of convergence. In fact we are able to prove a finer convergence for the total number of cycles, namely \textit{mod-Poisson convergence}. From there we apply previous results on mod-Poisson convergence to obtain Poisson approximation for the total number of cycles as well as large deviations estimates.
Periodic Euclidean Graphs on Integer Points
A uniformly discrete Euclidean graph is a graph embedded in a Euclidean space so that there is a minimum distance between distinct vertices. If such a graph embedded in an $n$-dimensional space is preserved under $n$ linearly independent translations, it is "$n$-periodic" in the sense that the quotient group of its symmetry group divided by the translational subgroup of its symmetry group is finite. We present a refinement of a theorem of Bieberbach: given a $n$-periodic uniformly discrete Euclidean graph embedded in a $n$-dimensional Euclidean space of symmetry group $\bbbS$, there is another $n$-periodic uniformly discrete Euclidean graph embedded in the same space whose vertices are integer points (possibly modulo an affine transformation) and whose symmetry group has a (not necessarily proper) subgroup isomorphic to $\bbbS$. We conclude with a discussion of an application to the computer generation of "crystal nets".

A resolving set of a graph is a set of vertices with the property that the list of distances from any vertex to those in the set uniquely identifies that vertex. In this paper, we construct a resolving set of Johnson graphs, doubled Odd graphs, doubled Grassmann graphs and twisted Grassmann graphs, respectively, and obtain the upper bounds on the metric dimension of these graphs.

A simplicial cell ball is a simplicial poset whose geometric realization is homeomorphic to a ball. Recently, Samuel Kolins gave a series of necessary conditions and sufficient conditions on $h$-vectors of simplicial cell balls, and characterized them up to dimension 6. In this paper, we extend Kolins' results. We characterize all possible $h$-vectors of simplicial cell balls in arbitrary dimension.

In this paper we present a theoretical analysis in order to establish maximal and minimal vectors with respect to the majorization order of particular subsets of \Re ^n: Afterwards we apply these issues to the calcula- tion of bounds for a topological descriptor of a graph known as the second Zagreb index. Finally, we show how our bounds may improve the re- sults obtained in the literature, providing some theoretical and numerical examples.
List version of ($p$,1)-total labellings
The ($p$,1)-total number $λ_p^T(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the width of the smallest range of integers that suffices to label the vertices and the edges of $G$ such that no two adjacent vertices have the same label, no two incident edges have the same label and the difference between the labels of a vertex and its incident edges is at least $p$. In this paper we consider the list version. Let $L(x)$ be a list of possible colors for all $x\in V(G)\cup E(G)$. Define $C_{p,1}^T(G)$ to be the smallest integer $k$ such that for every list assignment with $|L(x)|=k$ for all $x\in V(G)\cup E(G)$, $G$ has a ($p$,1)-total labelling $c$ such that $c(x)\in L(x)$ for all $x\in V(G)\cup E(G)$. We call $C_{p,1}^T(G)$ the ($p$,1)-total labelling choosability and $G$ is list $L$-($p$,1)-total labelable.
In this paper, we present a conjecture on the upper bound of $C_{p,1}^T$. Furthermore, we study this parameter for paths and trees in Section 2. We also prove that $C_{p,1}^T(K_{1,n})\leq n+2p-1$ for star $K_{1,n}$ with $p\geq2, n\geq3$ in Section 3 and $C_{p,1}^T(G)\leq Δ+2p-1$ for outerplanar graph with $Δ\geq p+3$ in Section 4.

The ($d$,1)-total labelling of graphs was introduced by Havet and Yu. In this paper, we prove that, for planar graph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ\geq12$ and $d=2$, the (2,1)-total labelling number $λ_2^T(G)$ is at most $Δ+2$.
Independent sets in chain cacti
In this paper chain cacti are considered. First, for two specific classes of chain cacti (orto-chains and meta-chains of cycles with h vertices) the recurrence relation for independence polynomial is derived. That recurrence relation is then used in deriving explicit expressions for independence number and number of maximum independent sets for such chains. Also, the recurrence relation for total number of independent sets for such graphs is derived. Finaly, the proof is provided that orto-chains and meta-chains are the only extremal chain cacti with respect to total number of independent sets (orto-chains minimal and meta-chains maximal).
Genus 0 characteristic numbers of the tropical projective plane

Finding the so-called characteristic numbers of the complex projective plane ${\mathbb C}P^2$ is a classical problem of enumerative geometry posed by Zeuthen more than a century ago. For a given $d$ and $g$ one has to find the number of degree $d$ genus $g$ curves that pass through a certain generic configuration of points and at the same time are tangent to a certain generic configuration of lines. The total number of points and lines in these two configurations is $3d-1+g$ so that the answer is a finite integer number.
In this paper we translate this classical problem to the corresponding enumerative problem of tropical geometry in the case when $g=0$. Namely, we show that the tropical problem is well-posed and establish a special case of the correspondence theorem that ensures that the corresponding tropical and classical numbers coincide. Then we use the floor diagram calculus to reduce the problem to pure combinatorics. As a consequence, we express genus 0 characteristic numbers of $\CC P^2$ in terms of open Hurwitz numbers.

We characterize the locally finite networks admitting non-constant harmonic functions of finite energy. Our characterization unifies the necessary existence criteria of Thomassen and of Lyons and Peres with the sufficient criterion of Soardi. We also extend a necessary existence criterion for non-elusive non-constant harmonic functions of finite energy due to Georgakopoulos.

The following theorem is proved: For all $k$-connected graphs $G$ and $H$ each with at least $n$ vertices, the treewidth of the cartesian product of $G$ and $H$ is at least $k(n -2k+2)-1$. For $n\gg k$ this lower bound is asymptotically tight for particular graphs $G$ and $H$. This theorem generalises a well known result about the treewidth of planar grid graphs.
Ranking pages and the topology of the web
This paper presents our studies on the rearrangement of links from the structure of websites for the purpose of improving the valuation of a page or group of pages as established by a ranking function as Google's PageRank. We build our topological taxonomy starting from unidirectional and bidirectional rooted trees, and up to more complex hierarchical structures as cyclical rooted trees (obtained by closing cycles on bidirectional trees) and PR--digraph rooted trees (digraphs whose condensation digraph is a rooted tree that behave like cyclical rooted trees). We give different modifications on the structure of these trees and its effect on the valuation given by the PageRank function. We derive closed formulas for the PageRank of the root of various types of trees, and establish a hierarchy of these topologies in terms of PageRank. We show that the PageRank of the root of cyclical and PR--digraph trees basically depends on the number of vertices per level and the number of cycles of distinct lengths among levels, and we give a closed vector formula to compute PageRank.

Considering systems of separations in a graph that separate every pair of a given set of vertex sets that are themselves not separated by these separations, we determine conditions under which such a separation system contains a nested subsystem that still separates those sets and is invariant under the automorphisms of the graph.
As an application, we show that the $k$-blocks -- the maximal vertex sets that cannot be separated by at most $k$ vertices -- of a graph $G$ live in distinct parts of a suitable tree-decomposition of $G$ of adhesion at most $k$, whose decomposition tree is invariant under the automorphisms of $G$. This extends recent work of Dunwoody and Krön and, like theirs, generalizes a similar theorem of Tutte for $k=2$.
Under mild additional assumptions, which are necessary, our decompositions can be combined into one overall tree-decomposition that distinguishes, for all $k$ simultaneously, all the $k$-blocks of a finite graph.
X = K under review
We review the X = K conjecture and important ingredients for the proof. We also attach notes on the rank estimate for the X = K theorem to hold and on the strange relation that was found to be valid without the assumption that the rank is sufficiently large. Using the latter one obtains an algorithm to calculate the image of the combinatorial R-matrix and the value of the coenergy function.

For the exceptional affine type E_6^{(1)} we establish a statistic-preserving bijection between the highest weight paths consisting of the simplest Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystal and the rigged configurations. The algorithm only uses the structure of the crystal graph, hence could also be applied to other exceptional types.
List (d,1)-total labelling of graphs embedded in surfaces
The (d,1)-total labelling of graphs was introduced by Havet and Yu. In this paper, we consider the list version of (d,1)-total labelling of graphs. Let G be a graph embedded in a surface with Euler characteristic $ε$ whose maximum degree $Δ(G)$ is sufficiently large. We prove that the (d,1)-total choosability $C_{d,1}^T(G)$ of $G$ is at most $Δ(G)+2d$.
A Combinatorial interpretation of Hofstadter's G-sequence
We give a combinatorial interpretation of a classical meta-Fibonacci sequence defined by G(n) = n - G(G(n-1)) with the initial condition G(1) = 1, which appears in Hofstadter's 'Godel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid'. The interpretation is in terms of an infinite labelled tree. We then show a few corollaries about the behaviour of the sequence G(n) directly from the interpretation.
