Directed Nowhere Dense Classes of Graphs

We introduce the concept of shallow directed minors and based on this a new classification of classes of directed graphs which is diametric to existing directed graph decompositions and width measures proposed in the literature.
We then study in depth one type of classes of directed graphs which we call nowhere crownful. The classes are very general as they include, on one hand, all classes of directed graphs whose underlying undirected class is nowhere dense, such as planar, bounded-genus, and $H$-minor-free graphs; and on the other hand, also contain classes of high edge density whose underlying class is not nowhere dense. Yet we are able to show that problems such as directed dominating set and many others become fixed-parameter tractable on nowhere crownful classes of directed graphs. This is of particular interest as these problems are not tractable on any existing digraph measure for sparse classes.
The algorithmic results are established via proving a structural equivalence of nowhere crownful classes and classes of graphs which are directed uniformly quasi-wide. This rather surprising result is inspired by Nesetril and Ossana de Mendez (2008) and yet a different and more delicate proof is needed, which is a significant part of our contribution.

In this paper we prove some new series for $1/π$ as well as related congruences. We also raise several new kinds of series for $1/π$ and present some related conjectural congruences involving representations of primes by binary quadratic forms.

MUBs inequivalence and affine planes

There are fairly large families of unitarily inequivalent complete sets of N+1 mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) in C^N for various prime powers N. The number of such sets is not bounded above by any polynomial as a function of N. While it is standard that there is a superficial similarity between complete sets of MUBs and finite affine planes, there is an intimate relationship between these large families and affine planes. This note briefly summarizes "old" results that do not appear to be well-known concerning known families of complete sets of MUBs and their associated planes.
Splitting the K-Terminal Reliability
Let G=(V,E) be a graph and K a set of terminal vertices of G. Assume that the edges of G are failing independently with given probabilities. The K-terminal reliability R(G,K) is the probability that all vertices in K are mutually connected. In this article we propose an efficient splitting formula for R(G,K) at a separating vertex set of G by lattice theoretic methods.
The Two Bicliques Problem is in NP intersection coNP
We show that the problem of deciding whether the vertex set of a graph can be covered with at most two bicliques is in NP$\cap$coNP. We thus almost determine the computational complexity of a problem whose status has remained open for quite some time. Our result implies that a polynomial time algorithm for the problem is more likely than it being NP-complete unless P = NP.
Solutions to two problems on permanents

In this note we settle two open problems in the theory of permanents by using recent results from other areas of mathematics. Bapat conjectured that certain quotients of permanents, which generalize symmetric function means, are concave. We prove this conjecture by using concavity properties of hyperbolic polynomials. Motivated by problems on random point processes, Shirai and Takahashi raised the problem: Determine all real numbers $α$ for which the $α$-permanent (or $α$-determinant) is nonnegative for all positive semidefinite matrices. We give a complete solution to this problem by using recent results of Scott and Sokal on completely monotone functions. It turns out that the conjectured answer to the problem is false.
Some combinatorial models for reduced expressions in Coxeter groups
Stanley's formula for the number of reduced expressions of a permutation regarded as a Coxeter group element raises the question of how to enumerate the reduced expressions of an arbitrary Coxeter group element. We provide a framework for answering this question by constructing combinatorial objects that represent the inversion set and the reduced expressions for an arbitrary Coxeter group element. The framework also provides a formula for the length of an element formed by deleting a generator from a Coxeter group element. Fan and Hagiwara, et al$.$ showed that for certain Coxeter groups, the short-braid avoiding elements characterize those elements that give reduced expressions when any generator is deleted from a reduced expression. We provide a characterization that holds in all Coxeter groups. Lastly, we give applications to the freely braided elements introduced by Green and Losonczy, generalizing some of their results that hold in simply-laced Coxeter groups to the arbitrary Coxeter group setting.
Irreducible cycles and points in special position in moduli spaces for tropical curves

In the first part of this paper, we discuss the notion of irreducibility of cycles in the moduli spaces of n-marked rational tropical curves. We prove that Psi-classes and vital divisors are irreducible, and that locally irreducible divisors are also globally irreducible for n \leq 6. In the second part of the paper, we show that the locus of point configurations in (\R^2)^n in special position for counting rational plane curves (defined in two different ways) can be given the structure a tropical cycle of codimension 1. In addition, we compute explicitly the weights of this cycle.
The 5'-3' distance of RNA secondary structures

Recently Yoffe {\it et al.} observed that the average distances between $5'-3'$ ends of RNA molecules are very small and largely independent of sequence length. This observation is based on numerical computations as well as theoretical arguments maximizing certain entropy functionals. In this paper we compute the exact distribution of $5'-3'$ distances of RNA secondary structures for any finite $n$. We furthermore compute the limit distribution and show that already for $n=30$ the exact distribution and the limit distribution are very close. Our results show that the distances of random RNA secondary structures are distinctively lower than those of minimum free energy structures of random RNA sequences.
Hamiltonicity, independence number, and pancyclicity

A graph on n vertices is called pancyclic if it contains a cycle of length l for all 3 \le l \le n. In 1972, Erdos proved that if G is a Hamiltonian graph on n > 4k^4 vertices with independence number k, then G is pancyclic. He then suggested that n = Ω(k^2) should already be enough to guarantee pancyclicity. Improving on his and some other later results, we prove that there exists a constant c such that n > ck^{7/3} suffices.

The eccentric connectivity index $ξ^c$ is a distance--based molecular structure descriptor that was recently used for mathematical modeling of biological activities of diverse nature. We prove that the broom has maximum $ξ^c$ among trees with a fixed maximum vertex degree, and characterize such trees with minimum $ξ^c$\,. In addition, we propose a simple linear algorithm for calculating $ξ^c$ of trees.
Common information revisited
One of the main notions of information theory is the notion of mutual information in two messages (two random variables in Shannon information theory or two binary strings in algorithmic information theory). The mutual information in $x$ and $y$ measures how much the transmission of $x$ can be simplified if both the sender and the recipient know $y$ in advance. Gács and Körner gave an example where mutual information cannot be presented as common information (a third message easily extractable from both $x$ and $y$). Then this question was studied in the framework of algorithmic information theory by An. Muchnik and A. Romashchenko who found many other examples of this type. K. Makarychev and Yu. Makarychev found a new proof of Gács--Körner results by means of conditionally independent random variables. The question about the difference between mutual and common information can be studied quantitatively: for a given $x$ and $y$ we look for three messages $a$, $b$, $c$ such that $a$ and $c$ are enough to reconstruct $x$, while $b$ and $c$ are enough to reconstruct $y$. In this paper: We state and prove (using hypercontractivity of product spaces) a quantitative version of Gács--Körner theorem; We study the tradeoff between $\abs{a}, \abs{b}, \abs{c}$ for a random pair $(x, y)$ such that Hamming distance between $x$ and $y$ is $\eps n$ (our bounds are almost tight); We construct "the worst possible" distribution on $(x, y)$ in terms of the tradeoff between $\abs{a}, \abs{b}, \abs{c}$.
Evaluation and normalization of Jack superpolynomials

Two evaluation formulas are derived for the Jack superpolynomials. The evaluation formulas are expressed in terms of products of fillings of skew diagrams. One of these formulas is nothing but the evaluation formula of the Jack polynomials with prescribed symmetry, which thereby receives here a remarkably simple formulation. Among the auxiliary results required to establish the evaluation formulas, the determination of the conditions ensuring the non-vanishing coefficients in a Pieri-type rule for Jack superpolynomials is worth pointing out. An important application of the evaluation formulas is a new derivation of the combinatorial norm of the Jack superpolynomials. We finally mention that the introduction of a simpler version of the dominance ordering on superpartitions is fundamental to establish our results.

Congruences involving $\binom{2k}k^2\binom{4k}{2k}m^{-k}$
Let $p>3$ be a prime, and let $m$ be an integer with $p\nmid m$. In the paper, by using the work of Ishii and Deuring's theorem for elliptic curves with complex multiplication we solve some conjectures of Zhi-Wei Sun concerning $\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\binom{2k}k^2\binom{4k}{2k}m^{-k}\mod {p^2}$.
On the locating chromatic number of Kneser graphs

Let $c$ be a proper $k$-coloring of a connected graph $G$ and $Π=(C_1,C_2,...,C_k)$ be an ordered partition of $V(G)$ into the resulting color classes. For a vertex $v$ of $G$, the color code of $v$ with respect to $Π$ is defined to be the ordered $k$-tuple $$c_{{}_Π}(v):=(d(v,C_1),d(v,C_2),...,d(v,C_k)),$$ where $d(v,C_i)=\min\{d(v,x) |x\in C_i\}, 1\leq i\leq k$. If distinct vertices have distinct color codes, then $c$ is called a locating coloring. The minimum number of colors needed in a locating coloring of $G$ is the locating chromatic number of $G$, denoted by $\Cchi_{{}_L}(G)$. In this paper, we study the locating chromatic number of Kneser graphs. First, among some other results we show that $\Cchi_{{}_L}(KG(n,2))=n-1$ for all $n\geq 5$. Then, we prove that $\Cchi_{{}_L}(KG(n,k))\leq n-1$, when $n\geq k^2$. Moreover, we present some bounds for the locating chromatic number of odd graphs.
Broccoli curves and the tropical invariance of Welschinger numbers

In this paper we introduce broccoli curves, certain plane tropical curves of genus zero related to real algebraic curves. The numbers of these broccoli curves through given points are independent of the chosen points - for arbitrary choices of the directions of the ends of the curves, possibly with higher weights, and also if some of the ends are fixed. In the toric Del Pezzo case we show that these broccoli invariants are equal to the Welschinger invariants (with real and complex conjugate point conditions), thus providing a proof of the independence of Welschinger invariants of the point conditions within tropical geometry. The general case gives rise to a tropical Caporaso-Harris formula for broccoli curves which suffices to compute all Welschinger invariants of the plane.
