Enumeration and Quasipolynomiality of Chip-Firing Configurations
In this paper we explore enumeration problems related to the number of reachable configurations in a chip-firing game on a finite connected graph G. We define an auxiliary notion of debt-reachability and prove that the number of debt-reachable configurations from an initial configuration with c chips on one vertex is a quasipolynomial in c. For the cycle graph C_n, we apply these results to compute a near explicit formula for the number of debt-reachable configurations. We then derive polynomial asymptotic bounds for the number of debt-reachable and reachable configurations, and finally provide evidence for a quasipolynomiality conjecture regarding the number of reachable configurations.
A characterization of arithmetical invariants by the monoid of relations II: The monotone catenary degree and applications to semigroup rings

The investigation and classification of non-unique factorization phenomena has attracted some interest in recent literature. For finitely generated monoids, S.T. Chapman and P.A. García-Sánchez, together with several co-authors, derived a method to calculate the catenary and tame degree from the monoid of relations. Then, in [1], the algebraic structure of this approach was investigated and the restriction to finitely generated monoids was removed. We now extend these ideas further to the monotone catenary degree and then apply all these results to the explicit computation of arithmetical invariants of semigroup rings.

Let A be the incidence matrix of passant lines and internal points with respect to a conic in PG(2, q), where q is an odd prime power. In this article, we study both geometric and algebraic properties of the column null space L of A over the finite field of 2 elements. In particular, using methods from both finite geometry and modular presentation theory, we manage to compute the dimension of L, which provides a proof for the conjecture on the dimension of the binary code generated by L.

We derive explicit expressions for the generating series of the fundamental solutions of the $A_r$ quantum $Q$-system of Ref. [P. Di Francesco and R. Suppose G is a finite group, such that |G| = 16p, where p is prime. We show that if S is any generating set of G, then there is a hamiltonian cycle in the corresponding Cayley graph Cay(G;S).

This is the second in a series of papers that develops the theory of reflection monoids, motivated by the theory of reflection groups. Reflection monoids were first introduced in arXiv:0812.2789. In this paper we study their presentations as abstract monoids. Along the way we also find general presentations for certain join-semilattices (as monoids under join) which we interpret for two special classes of examples: the face lattices of convex polytopes and the geometric lattices, particularly the intersection lattices of hyperplane arrangements. Another spin-off is a general presentation for the Renner monoid of an algebraic monoid, which we illustrate in the special case of the "classical" algebraic monoids.

We study the generalized and extended weight enumerator of the q-ary Simplex code and the q-ary first order Reed-Muller code. For our calculations we use that these codes correspond to a projective system containing all the points in a finite projective or affine space. As a result from the geometric method we use for the weight enumeration, we also completely determine the set of supports of subcodes and words in an extension code.
Counting patterns in colored orthogonal arrays

Let $S$ be an orthogonal array $OA(d,k)$ and let $c$ be an $r$--coloring of its ground set $X$. We give a combinatorial identity which relates the number of vectors in $S$ with given color patterns under $c$ with the cardinalities of the color classes. Several applications of the identity are considered. Among them, we show that every equitable $r$--coloring of the integer interval $[1,n]$ has at least $1/2(n/r)^2+O(n)$ monochromatic Schur triples. We also show that in an orthogonal array $OA(d,d-1)$, the number of monochromatic vectors of each color depends only on the number of vectors which miss that color and the cardinality of the color class.

A 3-coloring of the elements of an abelian group is said to be rainbow--free if there is no 3-term arithmetic progression with its members having pairwise distinct colors. We give a structural characterization of rainbow--free colorings of abelian groups. This characterization proves a conjecture of Jungić et al. on the size of the smallest chromatic class of a rainbow-free 3-coloring of cyclic groups.
Third Power of the Reversed Dickson Polynomial over Finite Fields
Let $D_n(1,x)$ be the $n$th reversed Dickson polynomial. The power sums $\sum_{a\in\Bbb F_q}D_n(1,a)^i$, $i=1,2$, have been determined recently. In this paper we give an evaluation of the sum $\sum_{a\in\Bbb F_q}D_n(1,a)^3$. This result implies new necessary conditions for $D_n(1,x)$ to be a permutation polynomial over $\Bbb F_q$.
The generalized 3-connectivity of Cartesian product graphs

The generalized connectivity of a graph, which was introduced recently by Chartrand et al., is a generalization of the concept of vertex connectivity. Let $S$ be a nonempty set of vertices of $G$, a collection $\{T_1,T_2,...,T_r\}$ of trees in $G$ is said to be internally disjoint trees connecting $S$ if $E(T_i)\cap E(T_j)=\emptyset$ and $V(T_i)\cap V(T_j)=S$ for any pair of distinct integers $i,j$, where $1\leq i,j\leq r$. For an integer $k$ with $2\leq k\leq n$, the $k$-connectivity $κ_k(G)$ of $G$ is the greatest positive integer $r$ for which $G$ contains at least $r$ internally disjoint trees connecting $S$ for any set $S$ of $k$ vertices of $G$. Obviously, $κ_2(G)=κ(G)$ is the connectivity of $G$. Sabidussi showed that $κ(G\Box H) \geq κ(G)+κ(H)$ for any two connected graphs $G$ and $H$. In this paper, we first study the 3-connectivity of the Cartesian product of a graph $G$ and a tree $T$, and show that $(i)$ if $κ_3(G)=κ(G)\geq 1$, then $κ_3(G\Box T)\geq κ_3(G)$; $(ii)$ if $1\leq κ_3(G)< κ(G)$, then $κ_3(G\Box T)\geq κ_3(G)+1$. Furthermore, for any two connected graphs $G$ and $H$ with $κ_3(G)\geqκ_3(H)$, if $κ(G)>κ_3(G)$, then $κ_3(G\Box H)\geq κ_3(G)+κ_3(H)$; if $κ(G)=κ_3(G)$, then $κ_3(G\Box H)\geq κ_3(G)+κ_3(H)-1$. Our result could be seen as a generalization of Sabidussi's result. Moreover, all the bounds are sharp.
The Tutte polynomial and the automorphism group of a graph

A graph $G$ is said to be $p$-periodic, if the automorphism group $Aut(G)$ contains an element of order $p$ which preserves no edges. In this paper, we investigate the behavior of graph polynomials (Negmai and Tutte) with respect to graph periodicity. In particular, we prove that if $p$ is a prime, then the coefficients of the Tutte polynomial of such a graph satisfy a certain necessary condition. This result is illustrated by an example where the Tutte polynomial is used to rule out the periodicity of the Frucht graph.
Automatic Generation of Generating Functions for Chromatic Polynomials for Grid Graphs (and more general creatures) of Fixed (but arbitrary!) Width
This short article, dedicated to our beloved guru Philippe FLAJOLET (1948-2011), is a case-study in computer-generated combinatorial research, where the computer, all by itself, is using the transfer-matrix method to derive (rigorously!) rational generating functions for chromatic polynomials for infinite sequences of graphs generalizing the action of taking the Cartesian product with a path of length n, n=1,2,... .
Finding a smallest odd hole in a claw-free graph using global structure

A lemma of Fouquet implies that a claw-free graph contains an induced $C_5$, contains no odd hole, or is quasi-line. In this paper we use this result to give an improved shortest-odd-hole algorithm for claw-free graphs by exploiting the structural relationship between line graphs and quasi-line graphs suggested by Chudnovsky and Seymour's structure theorem for quasi-line graphs. Our approach involves reducing the problem to that of finding a shortest odd cycle of length $\geq 5$ in a graph. Our algorithm runs in $O(m^2+n^2\log n)$ time, improving upon Shrem, Stern, and Golumbic's recent $O(nm^2)$ algorithm, which uses a local approach. The best known recognition algorithms for claw-free graphs run in $O(m^{1.69}) \cap O(n^{3.5})$ time, or $O(m^2) \cap O(n^{3.5})$ without fast matrix multiplication.

A graph of order $n>3$ is called {switching separable} if its modulo-2 sum with some complete bipartite graph on the same set of vertices is divided into two mutually independent subgraphs, each having at least two vertices. We prove the following: if removing any one or two vertices of a graph always results in a switching separable subgraph, then the graph itself is switching separable. On the other hand, for every odd order greater than 4, there is a graph that is not switching separable, but removing any vertex always results in a switching separable subgraph. We show a connection with similar facts on the separability of Boolean functions and reducibility of $n$-ary quasigroups. We study properties of binary codes with parameters close to the parameters of 1-perfect codes. An arbitrary binary $(n=2^m-3, 2^{n-m-1}, 4)$ code $C$, i.e., a code with parameters of a triply-shortened extended Hamming code, is a cell of an equitable partition of the $n$-cube into six cells. An arbitrary binary $(n=2^m-4, 2^{n-m}, 3)$ code $D$, i.e., a code with parameters of a triply-shortened Hamming code, is a cell of an equitable family (but not a partition) from six cells. As a corollary, the codes $C$ and $D$ are completely semiregular; i.e., the weight distribution of such a code depends only on the minimal and maximal codeword weights and the code parameters. Moreover, if $D$ is self-complementary, then it is completely regular. As an intermediate result, we prove, in terms of distance distributions, a general criterion for a partition of the vertices of a graph (from rather general class of graphs, including the distance-regular graphs) to be equitable. Keywords: 1-perfect code; triply-shortened 1-perfect code; equitable partition; perfect coloring; weight distribution; distance distribution
The skew diagram poset and components of skew characters
We investigate the poset of skew diagrams ordered by adding or forming the union of skew diagrams. We will show that a skew diagram which has at least n convex corners to the upper left and also to the lower right is larger than the skew diagram consisting of n disconnected single boxes. Using this property, we obtain lower bounds for the number of components, constituents and pairs of components which differ by one box in a given skew character.
Limits of permutation sequences

A permutation sequence is said to be convergent if the density of occurrences of every fixed permutation in the elements of the sequence converges. We prove that such a convergent sequence has a natural limit object, namely a Lebesgue measurable function $Z:[0,1]^2 \to [0,1]$ with the additional properties that, for every fixed $x \in [0,1]$, the restriction $Z(x,\cdot)$ is a cumulative distribution function and, for every $y \in [0,1]$, the restriction $Z(\cdot,y)$ satisfies a "mass" condition. This limit process is well-behaved: every function in the class of limit objects is a limit of some permutation sequence, and two of these functions are limits of the same sequence if and only if they are equal almost everywhere. An ingredient in the proofs is a new model of random permutations, which generalizes previous models and might be interesting for its own sake.

The subdivision graph $S(Σ)$ of a connected graph $Σ$ is constructed by adding a vertex in the middle of each edge. In a previous paper written with Cheryl E. Praeger, we characterised the graphs $Σ$ such that $S(Σ)$ is locally $(G,s)$-distance transitive for $s\leq 2\, diam(Σ)-1$ and some $G\leq Aut(Σ)$. In this paper, we solve the remaining cases by classifying all the graphs $Σ$ such that the subdivision graphs is locally $(G,s)$-distance transitive for $s\geq 2\, diam(Σ)$ and some $G\leq Aut(Σ)$. In particular, their subdivision graph are always locally $G$-distance transitive, except for the complete graphs.
