$t$-Covering Arrays Generated by a Tiling Probability Model
A $t-\a$ covering array is an $m\times n$ matrix, with entries from an alphabet of size $α$, such that for any choice of $t$ rows, and any ordered string of $t$ letters of the alphabet, there exists a column such that the "values" of the rows in that column match those of the string of letters. We use the Lovász Local Lemma in conjunction with a new tiling-based probability model to improve the upper bound on the smallest number of columns $N=N(m,t,α)$ of a $t-\a$ covering array.

We deduce a formula enumerating the isomorphism classes of extensions of a $\kp$-adic field $K$ with given ramification $e$ and inertia $f$. The formula follows from a simple group-theoretic lemma, plus the Krasner formula and an elementary class field theory computation. It shows that the number of classes only depends on the ramification and inertia of the extensions $K/\Q_p$, and $K(ζ_{p^m})/K$ obtained adding the $p^m$-th roots of 1, for all $p^m$ dividing $e$.

Golden and Alternating, fast simple O(lg n) algorithms for Fibonacci
Two very fast and simple O(lg n) algorithms for individual Fibonacci numbers are given and compared to competing algorithms. A simple O(lg n) recursion is derived that can also be applied to Lucas. A formula is given to estimate the largest n, where F_n does not overflow the implementation's data type. The danger of timing runs on input that is too large for the computer representation leads to false research results.

We prove new lower bounds on the likely size of a maximum independent set in a random graph with a given average degree. Our method is a weighted version of the second moment method, where we give each independent set a weight based on the total degree of its vertices.
Some enumerations of non-trivial compositions of the differential operations and the directional derivative
This paper deals with the enumeration of the higher order non-trivial compositions of the differential operations and the directional derivative in the space $R^n$ ($n \geq 3$). We present the recurrences for a counting the higher order non-trivial compositions.

We show how to efficiently enumerate a class of finite-memory stochastic processes using the causal representation of epsilon-machines. We characterize epsilon-machines in the language of automata theory and adapt a recent algorithm for generating accessible deterministic finite automata, pruning this over-large class down to that of epsilon-machines. As an application, we exactly enumerate topological epsilon-machines up to eight states and six-letter alphabets.
Domino shuffling for the Del Pezzo 3 lattice
We present a version of the domino shuffling algorithm (due to Elkies, Kuperberg, Larsen and Propp) which works on a different lattice: the hexagonal lattice superimposed on its dual graph. We use our algorithm to count perfect matchings on a family of finite subgraphs of this lattice whose boundary conditions are compatible with our algorithm. In particular, we re-prove an enumerative theorem of Ciucu, as well as finding a related family of subgraphs which have 2^{(n+1)^2} perfect matchings. We also give three-variable generating functions for perfect matchings on both families of graphs, which encode certain statistics on the height functions of these graphs.

We establish a relation between the Bollobas-Riordan polynomial of a ribbon graph with the relative Tutte polynomial of a plane graph obtained from the ribbon graph using its projection to the plane in a nontrivial way. Also we give a duality formula for the relative Tutte polynomial of dual plane graphs and an expression of the Kauffman bracket of a virtual link as a specialization of the relative Tutte polynomial.
Operations on polyhedral products and a new topological construction of infinite families of toric manifolds

A combinatorial construction is used to analyze the properties of polyhedral products and generalized moment-angle complexes with respect to certain operations on CW pairs including exponentiation. This allows for the construction of infinite families of toric manifolds, associated to a given one, in a way which simplifies the combinatorial input and consequently, the presentation of the cohomology rings. The new input is the interaction of a purely combinatorial construction with natural associated geometric constructions related to polyhedral products and toric manifolds. Applications of the methods and results developed here have appeared in literature.

The energy of a simple graph $G$, denoted by $E(G)$, is defined as the sum of the absolute values of all eigenvalues of its adjacency matrix. Denote by $C_n$ the cycle, and $P_n^{6}$ the unicyclic graph obtained by connecting a vertex of $C_6$ with a leaf of $P_{n-6}$\,. Caporossi et al. conjecture that the unicyclic graph with maximal energy is $P_n^6$ for $n=8,12,14$ and $n\geq 16$. In``Y. Hou, I. Gutman and C. Woo, Unicyclic graphs with maximal energy, {\it Linear Algebra Appl.} {\bf 356}(2002), 27--36", the authors proved that $E(P_n^6)$ is maximal within the class of the unicyclic bipartite $n$-vertex graphs differing from $C_n$\,. And they also claimed that the energy of $C_n$ and $P_n^6$ is quasi-order incomparable and left this as an open problem. In this paper, by utilizing the Coulson integral formula and some knowledge of real analysis, especially by employing certain combinatorial techniques, we show that the energy of $P_n^6$ is greater than that of $C_n$ for $n=8,12,14$ and $n\geq 16$, which completely solves this open problem and partially solves the above conjecture.

An edge-colored graph $G$ is rainbow connected if any two vertices are connected by a path whose edges have distinct colors. The rainbow connection number of a connected graph $G$, denoted by $rc(G)$, is the smallest number of colors that are needed in order to make $G$ rainbow connected. In this paper, we proved that $rc(G)\leq 3(n+1)/5$ for all $3$-connected graphs.
Properties of Uniform Doubly Stochastic Matrices
We investigate the properties of uniform doubly stochastic random matrices, that is non-negative matrices conditioned to have their rows and columns sum to 1. The rescaled marginal distributions are shown to converge to exponential distributions and indeed even large sub-matrices of side-length $o(n^{1/2-ε})$ behave like independent exponentials. We determine the limiting empirical distribution of the singular values the the matrix. Finally the mixing time of the associated Markov chains is shown to be exactly 2 with high probability.
On strong rainbow connection number
A path in an edge-colored graph, where adjacent edges may be colored the same, is a rainbow path if no two edges of it are colored the same. For any two vertices $u$ and $v$ of $G$, a rainbow $u-v$ geodesic in $G$ is a rainbow $u-v$ path of length $d(u,v)$, where $d(u,v)$ is the distance between $u$ and $v$. The graph $G$ is strongly rainbow connected if there exists a rainbow $u-v$ geodesic for any two vertices $u$ and $v$ in $G$. The strong rainbow connection number of $G$, denoted $src(G)$, is the minimum number of colors that are needed in order to make $G$ strong rainbow connected. In this paper, we first investigate the graphs with large strong rainbow connection numbers. Chartrand et al. obtained that $G$ is a tree if and only if $src(G)=m$, we will show that $src(G)\neq m-1$, so $G$ is not a tree if and only if $src(G)\leq m-2$, where $m$ is the number of edge of $G$. Furthermore, we characterize the graphs $G$ with $src(G)=m-2$. We next give a sharp upper bound for $src(G)$ according to the number of edge-disjoint triangles in graph $G$, and give a necessary and sufficient condition for the equality.

We introduce a new Macaulay2 package, Nauty, which gives access to powerful methods on graphs provided by the software nauty by Brendan McKay. The primary motivation for accessing nauty is to determine if two graphs are isomorphic. We also implement methods to generate families of graphs restricted in various ways using tools provided with the software nauty.
Gowers norms, regularization and limits of functions on abelian groups
For every natural number k we prove a decomposition theorem for bounded measurable functions on compact abelian groups into a structured part, a quasi random part and a small error term. In this theorem quasi randomness is measured with the Gowers norm U(k+1) and the structured part is a bounded complexity ``nilspace-polynomial'' of degree k. This statement implies a general inverse theorem for the U(k+1) norm. (We discuss some consequences in special families of groups such as bounded exponent groups, zero characteristic groups and the circle group.) Along these lines we introduce a convergence notion and corresponding limit objects for functions on abelian groups. This subject is closely related to the recently developed graph and hypergraph limit theory. An important goal of this paper is to put forward a new algebraic aspect of the notion ``higher order Fourier analysis''. According to this, k-th order Fourier analysis is regarded as the study of continuous morphisms between structures called compact k-step nilspaces. All our proofs are based on an underlying theory of topological nilspace factors of ultra product groups.
A polynomial-time algorithm for estimating the partition function of the ferromagnetic Ising model on a regular matroid

We investigate the computational difficulty of approximating the partition function of the ferromagnetic Ising model on a regular matroid. Jerrum and Sinclair have shown that there is a fully polynomial randomised approximation scheme (FPRAS) for the class of graphic matroids. On the other hand, the authors have previously shown, subject to a complexity-theoretic assumption, that there is no FPRAS for the class of binary matroids, which is a proper superset of the class of graphic matroids. In order to map out the region where approximation is feasible, we focus on the class of regular matroids, an important class of matroids which properly includes the class of graphic matroids, and is properly included in the class of binary matroids. Using Seymour's decomposition theorem, we give an FPRAS for the class of regular matroids.

Bouvel and Pergola introduced the notion of minimal permutations in the study of the whole genome duplication-random loss model for genome rearrangements. Let $\mathcal{F}_d(n)$ denote the set of minimal permutations of length $n$ with $d$ descents, and let $f_d(n)= |\mathcal{F}_d(n)|$. They derived that $f_{n-2}(n)=2^{n}-(n-1)n-2$ and $f_n(2n)=C_n$, where $C_n$ is the $n$-th Catalan number. Mansour and Yan proved that $f_{n+1}(2n+1)=2^{n-2}nC_{n+1}$. In this paper, we consider the problem of counting minimal permutations in $\mathcal{F}_d(n)$ with a prescribed set of ascents. We show that such structures are in one-to-one correspondence with a class of skew Young tableaux, which we call $2$-regular skew tableaux. Using the determinantal formula for the number of skew Young tableaux of a given shape, we find an explicit formula for $f_{n-3}(n)$. Furthermore, by using the Knuth equivalence, we give a combinatorial interpretation of a formula for a refinement of the number $f_{n+1}(2n+1)$.
Random graphs with few disjoint cycles

The classical Erdős-Pósa theorem states that for each positive integer k there is an f(k) such that, in each graph G which does not have k+1 disjoint cycles, there is a blocker of size at most f(k); that is, a set B of at most f(k) vertices such that G-B has no cycles. We show that, amongst all such graphs on vertex set {1,..,n}, all but an exponentially small proportion have a blocker of size k. We also give further properties of a random graph sampled uniformly from this class; concerning uniqueness of the blocker, connectivity, chromatic number and clique number. A key step in the proof of the main theorem is to show that there must be a blocker as in the Erdős-Pósa theorem with the extra `redundancy' property that B-v is still a blocker for all but at most k vertices v in B.
