The Expected Perimeter in Eden and Related Growth Processes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Following Richardson and using results of Kesten on First-passage percolation, we obtain an upper bound on the expected perimeter in an Eden Growth Process. Using results of the author from a problem in Statistical Mechanics, we show that the average perimeter of the lattice animals resulting from a very natural family of "growth histories" does not obey a similar bound.
Orders induced by segments in floorplan partitions and (2-14-3,3-41-2)-avoiding permutations
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 20, 2 (2013) P35 • View Publication • BIB
A floorplan is a tiling of a rectangle by rectangles. There are natural ways to order the elements---rectangles and segments---of a floorplan. Ackerman, Barequet and Pinter studied a pair of orders induced by neighborhood relations between rectangles, and obtained a natural bijection between these pairs and (2-41-3, 3-14-2)-avoiding permutations, also known as (reduced) Baxter permutations. In the present paper, we first perform a similar study for a pair of orders induced by neighborhood relations between segments of a floorplan. We obtain a natural bijection between these pairs and another family of permutations, namely (2-14-3, 3-41-2)-avoiding permutations. Then, we investigate relations between the two kinds of pairs of orders---and, correspondingly, between (2-41-3, 3-14-2)- and (2-14-3, 3-41-2)-avoiding permutations. In particular, we prove that the superposition of both permutations gives a complete Baxter permutation (originally called w-admissible, by Baxter and Joichi in the sixties). In other words, (2-14-3, 3-41-2)-avoiding permutations are the hidden part of complete Baxter permutations. We enumerate these permutations. To our knowledge, the characterization of these permutations in terms of forbidden patterns and their enumeration are both new results. Finally, we also study the special case of the so-called guillotine floorplans.

A refinement of a congruence result by van Hamme and Mortenson
Published in Illinois J. Math. 56(2012), no. 3, 967-979 • View Publication • BIB
Let $p$ be an odd prime. In 2008 E. Mortenson proved van Hamme's following conjecture: $$\sum_{k=0}^{(p-1)/2}(4k+1)\binom{-1/2}k^3\equiv (-1)^{(p-1)/2}p\pmod{p^3}.$$ In this paper we show further that \begin{align*}\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}(4k+1)\binom{-1/2}k^3\equiv &\sum_{k=0}^{(p-1)/2}(4k+1)\binom{-1/2}k^3 \\\equiv & (-1)^{(p-1)/2}p+p^3E_{p-3} \pmod{p^4},\end{align*}where $E_0,E_1,E_2,\ldots$ are Euler numbers. We also prove that if $p>3$ then $$\sum_{k=0}^{(p-1)/2}\frac{20k+3}{(-2^{10})^k}\binom{4k}{k,k,k,k}\equiv(-1)^{(p-1)/2}p(2^{p-1}+2-(2^{p-1}-1)^2)\pmod{p^4}.$$

Mass Partitions via Equivariant Sections of Stiefel Bundles
Published in Filomat Vol. 32 (2018) 759-3768 • View Publication • BIB
We consider a geometric combinatorial problem naturally associated to the geometric topology of certain spherical space forms. Given a collection of $m$ mass distributions on $\mathbb{R}^n$, the existence of $k$ affinely independent regular $q$-fans, each of which equipartitions each of the measures, can in many cases be deduced from the existence of a $\mathbb{Z}_q$-equivariant section of the Stiefel bundle $V_k(\mathbb{F}^n)$ over $S(\mathbb{F}^n)$, where $V_k(\mathbb{F}^n)$ is the Stiefel manifold of all orthonormal $k$-frames in $\mathbb{F}^n,\, \mathbb{F} = \mathbb{R}$ or $\mathbb{C}$, and $S(\mathbb{F}^n)$ is the corresponding unit sphere. For example, the parallelizability of $\mathbb{R}P^n$ when $n = 2,4$, or $8$ implies that any two masses on $\mathbb{R}^n$ can be simultaneously bisected by each of $(n-1)$ pairwise-orthogonal hyperplanes, while when $q=3$ or 4, the triviality of the circle bundle $V_2(\mathbb{C}^2)/\mathbb{Z}_q$ over the standard Lens Spaces $L^3(q)$ yields that for any mass on $\mathbb{R}^4$, there exist a pair of complex orthogonal regular $q$-fans, each of which equipartitions the mass.

Partitions with prescribed hooksets
The combinatorial properties of partitions with various restrictions on their hooksets are explored. A connection with numerical semigroups extends current results on simultaneous s/t-cores. Conditions that suffice for a partition to possess required hooks are developed.
Computation of the highest coefficients of weighted Ehrhart quasi-polynomials of rational polyhedra
Published • View Publication • BIB
This article concerns the computational problem of counting the lattice points inside convex polytopes, when each point must be counted with a weight associated to it. We describe an efficient algorithm for computing the highest degree coefficients of the weighted Ehrhart quasi-polynomial for a rational simple polytope in varying dimension, when the weights of the lattice points are given by a polynomial function h. Our technique is based on a refinement of an algorithm of A. Barvinok [Computing the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial of a rational simplex, Math. Comp. 75 (2006), pp. 1449--1466] in the unweighted case (i.e., h = 1). In contrast to Barvinok's method, our method is local, obtains an approximation on the level of generating functions, handles the general weighted case, and provides the coefficients in closed form as step polynomials of the dilation. To demonstrate the practicality of our approach we report on computational experiments which show even our simple implementation can compete with state of the art software.

There exists no distance-regular graph with intersection array {55,36,11;1,4,45}
We prove that a distance-regular graph with intersection array $\{55,36,11;1,4,45\}$ does not exist. This intersection array is from the table of feasible parameters for distance-regular graphs in "Distance-regular graphs"\ by A.E. Brouwer, A.M. Cohen, A. Neumaier.

Polytopes, Hopf algebras and Quasi-symmetric functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we use the technique of Hopf algebras and quasi-symmetric functions to study the combinatorial polytopes. Consider the free abelian group $\mathcal{P}$ generated by all combinatorial polytopes. There are two natural bilinear operations on this group defined by a direct product $\times $ and a join $\divideontimes$ of polytopes. $(\mathcal{P},\times)$ is a commutative associative bigraded ring of polynomials, and $\mathcal{RP}=(\mathbb Z\varnothing\oplus\mathcal{P},\divideontimes)$ is a commutative associative threegraded ring of polynomials. The ring $\mathcal{RP}$ has the structure of a graded Hopf algebra. It turns out that $\mathcal{P}$ has a natural Hopf comodule structure over $\mathcal{RP}$. Faces operators $d_k$ that send a polytope to the sum of all its $(n-k)$-dimensional faces define on both rings the Hopf module structures over the universal Leibnitz-Hopf algebra $\mathcal{Z}$. This structure gives a ring homomorphism $\R\to\Qs\otimes\R$, where $\R$ is $\mathcal{P}$ or $\mathcal{RP}$. Composing this homomorphism with the characters $P^n\toα^n$ of $\mathcal{P}$, $P^n\toα^{n+1}$ of $\mathcal{RP}$, and with the counit we obtain the ring homomorphisms $f\colon\mathcal{P}\to\Qs[α]$, $f_{\mathcal{RP}}\colon\mathcal{RP}\to\Qs[α]$, and $\F^*:\mathcal{RP}\to\Qs$, where $F$ is the Ehrenborg transformation. We describe the images of these homomorphisms in terms of functional equations, prove that these images are rings of polynomials over $\mathbb Q$, and find the relations between the images, the homomorphisms and the Hopf comodule structures. For each homomorphism $f,\;f_{\mathcal{RP}}$, and $\F$ the images of two polytopes coincide if and only if they have equal flag $f$-vectors. Therefore algebraic structures on the images give the information about flag $f$-vectors of polytopes.

A first order phase transition in the threshold-$θ\ge 2$ contact process on random $r$-regular graphs and $r$-trees
Published in Stochastic Processes and Their Applications 123 (2013), no. 2, 561-578 • View Publication • BIB
We consider the discrete-time threshold-$θ\ge 2$ contact process on a random r-regular graph on n vertices. In this process, a vertex with at least θoccupied neighbors at time t will be occupied at time t+1 with probability p, and vacant otherwise. We show that if $θ\ge 2$ and $r \ge θ+2$, $ε_1$ is small and p is at least $p_1(ε_1)$, then starting from all vertices occupied the fraction of occupied vertices stays above $1-2ε_1$ up to time $\exp(γ_1(r)n)$ with probability at least $1 - \exp(-γ_1(r)n)$. In the other direction, we show that for $p_2 < 1$ there is an $ε_2(p_2)>0$ so that if $p \le p_2$ and the number of occupied vertices in the initial configuration is at most $ε_2(p_2)n$, then with high probability all vertices are vacant at time $C_2(p_2) \log(n)$. These two conclusions imply that on the random r-regular graph there cannot be a quasi-stationary distribution with density of occupied vertices between 0 and $ε_2(p_1)$, and allow us to conclude that the process on the r-tree has a first order phase transition.
Segment representation of a subclass of co-planar graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph is said to be a segment graph if its vertices can be mapped to line segments in the plane such that two vertices have an edge between them if and only if their corresponding line segments intersect. Kratochvíl and Kuběna [``On intersection representations of co-planar graphs'', Discrete Mathematics, 178(1-3):251-255, 1998] asked the question of whether the complements of planar graphs are segment graphs. We show here that the complements of all partial 2-trees are segment graphs.

A hypergraph blow-up lemma

Euler characteristic of the bifurcation set for a polynomial of degree 2 or 3
Assume that the coefficients of a polynomial in a complex variable are Laurent polynomials in some complex parameters. The parameter space (a complex torus) splits into strata corresponding to different combinations of coincidence of the roots of the polynomial. For generic Laurent polynomials with fixed Newton polyhedra the Euler characteristics of these strata are also fixed. We provide explicit formulae for the Euler characteristics of the strata in terms of the polyhedra of the Laurent polynomials in the cases of degrees 2 and 3. We also obtain some corollaries in combinatorial geometry, which follows from two different ways of computing the Euler characteristic of the bifurcation set for a reduced polynomial of degree 2.

Integer hulls of linear polyhedra and scl in families
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 365 (2013), no. 10, 5085-5102 • View Publication • BIB
The integer hull of a polyhedron is the convex hull of the integer points contained in it. We show that the vertices of the integer hulls of a rational family of polyhedra of size O(n) have quasipolynomial coordinates. As a corollary, we show that the stable commutator length of elements in a surgery family is a ratio of quasipolynomials, and that unit balls in the scl norm quasi-converge in finite dimensional surgery families.

Turánnical hypergraphs
Published in Random Structures Algorithms 42 (2013), no. 1, 29-58 • View Publication • BIB
This paper is motivated by the question of how global and dense restriction sets in results from extremal combinatorics can be replaced by less global and sparser ones. The result we consider here as an example is Turan's theorem, which deals with graphs G=([n],E) such that no member of the restriction set consisting of all r-tuples on [n] induces a copy of K_r. Firstly, we examine what happens when this restriction set is replaced just by all r-tuples touching a given m-element set. That is, we determine the maximal number of edges in an n-vertex such that no K_r hits a given vertex set. Secondly, we consider sparse random restriction sets. An r-uniform hypergraph R on vertex set [n] is called Turannical (respectively epsilon-Turannical), if for any graph G on [n] with more edges than the Turan number ex(n,K_r) (respectively (1+\eps)ex(n,K_r), no hyperedge of R induces a copy of K_r in G. We determine the thresholds for random r-uniform hypergraphs to be Turannical and to epsilon-Turannical. Thirdly, we transfer this result to sparse random graphs, using techniques recently developed by Schacht [Extremal results for random discrete structures] to prove the Kohayakawa-Luczak-Rodl Conjecture on Turan's theorem in random graphs.

On twin and anti-twin words in the support of the free Lie algebra
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $L_{K}(A)$ be the free Lie algebra on a finite alphabet $A$ over a commutative ring $K$ with unity. For a word $u$ in the free monoid $A^{*}$ let $\tilde{u}$ denote its reversal. Two words in $A^{*}$ are called twin (resp. anti-twin) if they appear with equal (resp. opposite) coefficients in each Lie polynomial. Let $l$ denote the left-normed Lie bracketing and $λ$ be its adjoint map with respect to the canonical scalar product on the corresponding free associative algebra. Studying the kernel of $λ$ and using several techniques from combinatorics on words and the shuffle algebra, we show that when $K$ is of characteristic zero two words $u$ and $v$ of common length $n$ that lie in the support of ${\mathcal L}_{K}(A)$ - i.e., they are neither powers $a^{n}$ of letters $a \in A$ with exponent $n > 1$ nor palindromes of even length - are twin (resp. anti-twin) if and only if $u = v$ or $u = \tilde{v}$ and $n$ is odd (resp. $u = \tilde{v}$ and $n$ is even).

Structure of finite nilspaces and inverse theorems for the Gowers norms in bounded exponent groups
A result of the author shows that the behavior of Gowers norms on bounded exponent abelian groups is connected to finite nilspaces. Motivated by this, we investigate the structure of finite nilspaces. As an application we prove inverse theorems for the Gowers norms on bounded exponent abelian groups. It says roughly speaking that if a function on A has non negligible U(k+1)-norm then it correlates with a phase polynomial of degree k when lifted to some abelian group extension of A. This result is closely related to a conjecture by Tao and Ziegler. In prticular we obtain a new proof for the Tao-Ziegler inverse theorem.

Mask formulas for cograssmannian Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 17 (2013), p. 151-203 • View Publication • BIB
We give two contructions of sets of masks on cograssmannian permutations that can be used in Deodhar's formula for Kazhdan-Lusztig basis elements of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra. The constructions are respectively based on a formula of Lascoux-Schutzenberger and its geometric interpretation by Zelevinsky. The first construction relies on a basis of the Hecke algebra constructed from principal lower order ideals in Bruhat order and a translation of this basis into sets of masks. The second construction relies on an interpretation of masks as cells of the Bott-Samelson resolution. These constructions give distinct answers to a question of Deodhar.

Hierarchical zonotopal power ideals
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 33 (2012), no. 6, 1120-1141 • View Publication • BIB
Zonotopal algebra deals with ideals and vector spaces of polynomials that are related to several combinatorial and geometric structures defined by a finite sequence of vectors. Given such a sequence X, an integer k>=-1 and an upper set in the lattice of flats of the matroid defined by X, we define and study the associated hierarchical zonotopal power ideal. This ideal is generated by powers of linear forms. Its Hilbert series depends only on the matroid structure of X. Via the Tutte polynomial, it is related to various other matroid invariants, e.g. the shelling polynomial and the characteristic polynomial. This work unifies and generalizes results by Ardila-Postnikov on power ideals and by Holtz-Ron and Holtz-Ron-Xu on (hierarchical) zonotopal algebra. We also generalize a result on zonotopal Cox modules that were introduced by Sturmfels-Xu.

Tableaux and plane partitions of truncated shapes
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider a new kind of straight and shifted plane partitions/Young tableaux --- ones whose diagrams are no longer of partition shape, but rather Young diagrams with boxes erased from their upper right ends. We find formulas for the number of standard tableaux in certain cases, namely a shifted staircase without the box in its upper right corner, i.e. truncated by a box, a rectangle truncated by a staircase and a rectangle truncated by a square minus a box. The proofs involve finding the generating function of the corresponding plane partitions using interpretations and formulas for sums of restricted Schur functions and their specializations. The number of standard tableaux is then found as a certain limit of this function.
