Sweeping the cd-Index and the Toric h-Vector

We derive formulas for the cd-index and the toric h-vector of a convex polytope P from a sweeping by a hyperplane. These arise from interpreting the corresponding S-shelling of the dual of P. We describe a partition of the faces of the complete truncation of P to reflect explicitly the nonnegativity of its cd-index and what its components are counting. One corollary is a quick way to compute the toric h-vector directly from the cd-index. We also propose an "extended toric" h-vector that fully captures the information in the flag h-vector.

A unicellular map is the embedding of a connected graph in a surface in such a way that the complement of the graph is simply connected. In a famous article, Harer and Zagier established a formula for the generating function of unicellular maps counted according to the number of vertices and edges. The keystone of their approach is a counting formula for unicellular maps on orientable surfaces with $n$ edges, and with vertices colored using every color in $[q]$ (adjacent vertices are authorized to have the same color). We give an analogue of this formula for general (locally orientable) surfaces. Our approach is bijective and is inspired by Lass's proof of the Harer-Zagier formula. We first revisit Lass's proof and twist it into a bijection between unicellular maps on orientable surfaces with vertices colored using every color in $[q]$, and maps with vertex set $[q]$ on orientable surfaces \emph{with a marked spanning tree}. The bijection immediately implies Harer-Zagier's formula and a formula by Jackson concerning bipartite unicellular maps. It also shed a new light on constructions by Goulden and Nica, Schaeffer and Vassilieva, and Morales and Vassilieva. We then extend the bijection to general surfaces and obtain a correspondence between unicellular maps on general surfaces with vertices colored using every color in $[q]$, and maps on orientable surfaces with vertex set $[q]$ \emph{with a marked planar submap}. This correspondence gives an analogue of the Harer-Zagier formula for general surfaces. We also show that this formula implies a recursion formula due to Ledoux for the numbers of unicellular maps with given numbers of vertices and edges.

We consider the {\it infinite Johnson graph} $J_{\infty}$ whose vertex set consists of all subsets $X\subset {\mathbb N}$ satisfying $|X|=|{\mathbb N}\setminus X|=\infty$ and whose edges are pairs of such subsets $X,Y$ satisfying $|X\setminus Y|=|Y\setminus X|=1$. An automorphism of $J_{\infty}$ is said to be {\it regular} if it is induced by a permutation on $\mathbb{N}$ or it is the composition of the automorphism induced by a permutation on $\mathbb{N}$ and the automorphism $X\to {\mathbb N}\setminus X$. The graph $J_{\infty}$ admits non-regular automorphisms. Our first result states that the restriction of every automorphism of $J_{\infty}$ to any connected component ($J_{\infty}$ is not connected) coincides with the restriction of a regular automorphism. The second result is a characterization of regular automorphisms of $J_{\infty}$ as order preserving and order reversing bijective transformations of the vertex set of $J_{\infty}$ (the vertex set is partially ordered by the inclusion relation). As an application, we describe automorphisms of the associated {\it infinite Kneser graph}.
A Unified Combinatorial Approach to Several Poincare Series Identities
Mendes recently conjectured an identity simplifying the Poincaré series of the space of equivariant polynomial maps from $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ to a subrepresentation of $Sym^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$. We show how to prove this identity using a fairly simple integer partition bijection. First, we give a bijective proof of a similar, well-known identity from representation theory. We then show that this bijection can be generalized to prove other Poincaré series identities, including a version of the identity conjectured by Mendes as well as refinements of it.

We suggest a new type of problem about distances in graphs and make several conjectures. As a first step towards proving them, we show that for sufficiently large values of n and k, a graph on n vertices that has no three vertices at pairwise distance k has at most (n-k+1)^2/4 pairs of vertices at distance k.

We study the integrals of type $I(a)=\int_{O_n}\prod u_{ij}^{a_{ij}}\,du$, depending on a matrix $a\in M_{p\times q}(\mathbb N)$, whose exact computation is an open problem. Our results are as follows: (1) an extension of the "elementary expansion" formula from the case $a\in M_{2\times q}(2\mathbb N)$ to the general case $a\in M_{p\times q}(\mathbb N)$, (2) the construction of the "best algebraic normalization" of $I(a)$, in the case $a\in M_{2\times q}(\mathbb N)$, (3) an explicit formula for $I(a)$, for diagonal matrices $a\in M_{3\times 3}(\mathbb N)$, (4) a modelling result in the case $a\in M_{1\times 2}(\mathbb N)$, in relation with the Euler-Rodrigues formula. Most proofs use various combinatorial techniques.

Let $G$ be any triangle-free graph with maximum degree $Δ\leq 3$. Staton proved that the independence number of $G$ is at least 5/14n. Heckman and Thomas conjectured that Staton's result can be strengthened into a bound on the fractional chromatic number of $G$, namely $χ_f(G)\leq 14/5. Recently, Hatami and Zhu proved $χ_f(G) \leq 3 -{3/64}$. In this paper, we prove $χ_f(G) \leq 3- 3/43$.

We show that if G is a finite group then no chain of modular elements in its subgroup lattice L(G) is longer than a chief series. Also, we show that if G is a nonsolvable finite group then every maximal chain in L(G) has length at least two more than that of the chief length of G, thereby providing a converse of a result of J. Kohler. Our results enable us to give a new characterization of finite solvable groups involving only the combinatorics of subgroup lattices. Namely, a finite group G is solvable if and only if L(G) contains a maximal chain X and a chain M consisting entirely of modular elements, such that X and M have the same length.

We study $Q$-polynomial distance-regular graphs from the point of view of what we call descendents, that is to say, those vertex subsets with the property that the width $w$ and dual width $w^*$ satisfy $w+w^*=d$, where $d$ is the diameter of the graph. We show among other results that a nontrivial descendent with $w\ge 2$ is convex precisely when the graph has classical parameters. The classification of descendents has been done for the 5 classical families of graphs associated with short regular semilattices. We revisit and characterize these families in terms of posets consisting of descendents, and extend the classification to all of the 15 known infinite families with classical parameters and with unbounded diameter.
Pfaffian L-ensembles related to the z-measures on partitions with the Jack parameters 1/2 or 2
We construct Pfaffian L-ensembles related to the z-measures on partitions and to the Plancherel measures on partitions with the Jack parameters 1/2 or 2. The results imply that these measures on partitions lead to Pfaffian point processes, and the correlation kernels of these processes can be expressed in terms of the corresponding L-matrices. We give explit formulae for these L-matrices.

We define and study a combinatorial Hopf algebra dRec with basis elements indexed by diagonal rectangulations of a square. This Hopf algebra provides an intrinsic combinatorial realization of the Hopf algebra tBax of twisted Baxter permutations, which previously had only been described extrinsically as a sub Hopf algebra of the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations. We describe the natural lattice structure on diagonal rectangulations, analogous to the Tamari lattice on triangulations, and observe that diagonal rectangulations index the vertices of a polytope analogous to the associahedron. We give an explicit bijection between twisted Baxter permutations and the better-known Baxter permutations, and describe the resulting Hopf algebra structure on Baxter permutations.

The Yao-Yao partition theorem states that given a probability measure on an affine space of dimension n having a density which is continuous and bounded away from 0, it is possible to partition the space into 2^n regions of equal measure in such a way that every affine hyperplane avoids at least one of the regions. We give a constructive proof of this result and extend it to slightly more general measures.
Cohomology of real Grassmann manifold and KP flow
We consider a realization of the real Grassmann manifold Gr(k,n) based on a particular flow defined by the corresponding (singular) solution of the KP equation. Then we show that the KP flow can provide an explicit and simple construction of the incidence graph for the integral cohomology of Gr(k,n). It turns out that there are two types of graphs, one for the trivial coefficients and other for the twisted coefficients, and they correspond to the homology groups of the orientable and non-orientable cases of Gr(k,n) via the Poincare-Lefschetz duality. We also derive an explicit formula of the Poincare polynomial for Gr(k,n) and show that the Poincare polynomial is also related to the number of points on a suitable version of Gr(k,n) over a finite field $\F_q$ with q being a power of a prime. In particular, we find that the number of $\F_q$ points on Gr(k,n) can be computed by counting the number of singularities along the KP flow.
Maker Can Construct a Sparse Graph on a Small Board
We study Maker/Breaker games on the edges of sparse graphs. Maker and Breaker take turns in claiming previously unclaimed edges of a given graph H. Maker aims to occupy a given target graph G and Breaker tries to prevent Maker from achieving his goal. We define a function f and show that for every d-regular graph G on n vertices there is a graph H with at most f(d)n edges such that Maker can occupy a copy of G in the game on H.
L-cumulants, L-cumulant embeddings and algebraic statistics

Focusing on the discrete probabilistic setting we generalize the combinatorial definition of cumulants to L-cumulants. This generalization keeps all the desired properties of the classical cumulants like semi-invariance and vanishing for independent blocks of random variables. These properties make L-cumulants useful for the algebraic analysis of statistical models. We illustrate this for general Markov models and hidden Markov processes in the case when the hidden process is binary. The main motivation of this work is to understand cumulant-like coordinates in algebraic statistics and to give a more insightful explanation why tree cumulants give such an elegant description of binary hidden tree models. Moreover, we argue that L-cumulants can be used in the analysis of certain classical algebraic varieties.
Grothendieck inequalities for semidefinite programs with rank constraint

Grothendieck inequalities are fundamental inequalities which are frequently used in many areas of mathematics and computer science. They can be interpreted as upper bounds for the integrality gap between two optimization problems: a difficult semidefinite program with rank-1 constraint and its easy semidefinite relaxation where the rank constrained is dropped. For instance, the integrality gap of the Goemans-Williamson approximation algorithm for MAX CUT can be seen as a Grothendieck inequality. In this paper we consider Grothendieck inequalities for ranks greater than 1 and we give two applications: approximating ground states in the n-vector model in statistical mechanics and XOR games in quantum information theory.

The probability for two monic polynomials of a positive degree n with coefficients in the finite field F_q to be relatively prime turns out to be identical with the probability for an n x n Hankel matrix over F_q to be nonsingular. Motivated by this, we give an explicit map from pairs of coprime polynomials to nonsingular Hankel matrices that explains this connection. A basic tool used here is the classical notion of Bezoutian of two polynomials. Moreover, we give simpler and direct proofs of the general formulae for the number of m-tuples of relatively prime polynomials over F_q of given degrees and for the number of n x n Hankel matrices over F_q of a given rank
Topology of Cayley Graphs Applied to Inverse Additive Problems
We present proofs of the basic isopermetric structure theory, obtaining some new simplified proofs. As an application, we obtain simple descriptions for subsets $S$ of an abelian group with $|kS|\le k|S|-k+1$ or $|kS-rS|- (k+r)|S|,$ where $1\le r \le k.$ These results may be applied to several questions in Combinatorics and Additive Combinatorics (Frobenius Problem, Waring's problem in finite fields and Cayley graphs with a big diameter, ....).

Aichholzer et al. [{\it Graphs and Combinatorics}, Vol. 23, 481-507, 2007] introduced the notion of pseudo-convex partitioning of planar point sets and proved that the pseudo-convex partition number $ψ(n)$ satisfies, $\frac{3}{4}\lfloor\frac{n}{4}\rfloor\leq ψ(n)\leq\lceil\frac{n}{4}\rceil$. In this paper we prove that $ψ(13)=3$, which immediately improves the upper bound on $ψ(n)$ to $\lceil\frac{3n}{13}\rceil$, thus answering a question posed by Aichholzer et al. in the same paper.
