Zonotopal algebra interweaves algebraic, geometric and combinatorial properties of a given linear map X. Of basic significance in this theory is the fact that the algebraic structures are derived from the geometry (via a non-linear procedure known as "the least map"), and that the statistics of the algebraic structures (e.g., the Hilbert series of various polynomial ideals) are combinatorial, i.e., computable using a simple discrete algorithm known as "the valuation function". On the other hand, the theory is somewhat rigid since it deals, for the given X, with exactly two pairs each of which is made of a nested sequence of three ideals: an external ideal (the smallest), a central ideal (the middle), and an internal ideal (the largest).
In this paper we show that the fundamental principles of zonotopal algebra as described in the previous paragraph extend far beyond the setup of external, central and internal ideals by building a whole hierarchy of new combinatorially defined zonotopal spaces.
Spanning trees in hyperbolic graphs

In this paper we construct spanning trees in hyperbolic graphs that represent their hyperbolic compactification in a good way: so that the tree has a bounded number of distinct rays to each boundary point. The bound depends only on the (Assouad) dimension of the boundary. As a corollary we sharpen a result of Gromov which says that from every hyperbolic graph with bounded degrees one can construct a tree outside the graph with a continuous surjection from the ends of the tree onto the hyperbolic boundary such that the surjection is finite-to-one. We will construct a tree with these properties inside the hyperbolic graph, which in addition is also a spanning tree of that graph.
On the homology of locally finite graphs
We show that the topological cycle space of a locally finite graph is a canonical quotient of the first singular homology group of its Freudenthal compactification, and we characterize the graphs for which the two coincide. We construct a new singular-type homology for non-compact spaces with ends, which in dimension~1 captures precisely the topological cycle space of graphs but works in any dimension.

We characterize the fundamental group of a locally finite graph G with ends combinatorially, as a group of infinite words. Our characterization gives rise to a canonical embedding of this group in the inverse limit of the (free) fundamental groups of the finite subgraphs of G.
On the homology of locally compact spaces with ends

We propose a homology theory for locally compact spaces with ends in which the ends play a special role. The approach is motivated by results for graphs with ends, where it has been highly successful. But it was unclear how the original graph-theoretical definition could be captured in the usual language for homology theories, so as to make it applicable to more general spaces. In this paper we provide such a general topological framework: we define a homology theory which satisfies the usual axioms, but which maintains the special role for ends that has made this homology work so well for graphs.

We study transitivity properties of graphs with more than one end. We completely classify the distance-transitive such graphs and, for all $k \geq 3$, the $k$-CS-transitive such graphs.

Let p be an odd prime and let a be a positive integer. In this paper we investigate the sum $\sum_{k=0}^{p^a-1}\binom{hp^a-1}{k}\binom{2k}{k}/m^k$ mod p^2, where h,m are p-adic integers with m\not=0 (mod p). For example, we show that if h\not=0 (mod p) and p^a>3 then $$ sum_{k=0}^{p^a-1}\binom{hp^a-1}{k}\binom{2k}{k}(-h/2)^k =(\frac{1-2h}{p^a})(1+h((4h-2)^{p-1}/h^{p-1}-1)) (mod p^2),$$ where (-) denotes the Jacobi symbol. Here is another remarkable congruence: If p>3 then $$\sum_{k=0}^{p^a-1}\binom{p^a-1}{k}\binom{2k}{k}(-1)^k =3^{p-1}(\frac{p^a}3) (mod p^2).$$

We describe wall-crossing for local, toric Calabi-Yau manifolds without compact four-cycles, in terms of free fermions, vertex operators, and crystal melting. Firstly, to each such manifold we associate two states in the free fermion Hilbert space. The overlap of these states reproduces the BPS partition function corresponding to the non-commutative Donaldson-Thomas invariants, given by the modulus square of the topological string partition function. Secondly, we introduce the wall-crossing operators which represent crossing the walls of marginal stability associated to changes of the B-field through each two-cycle in the manifold. BPS partition functions in non-trivial chambers are given by the expectation values of these operators. Thirdly, we discuss crystal interpretation of such correlators for this whole class of manifolds. We describe evolution of these crystals upon a change of the moduli, and find crystal interpretation of the flop transition and the DT/PT transition. The crystals which we find generalize and unify various other Calabi-Yau crystal models which appeared in literature in recent years.
Infinite permutations of lowest maximal pattern complexity

An infinite permutation is a linear ordering of the set of non-negative integers. Generally, the properties of infinite permutations analogous to those of infinite words show some resemblances and some differences between permutations and words. In this paper, we define maximal pattern complexity for infinite permutations and show that this complexity function is ultimately constant if and only if the permutation is ultimately periodic. Then we characterize the non-periodic permutations of minimal complexity (equal to n) and find that they all are constructed with the use of Sturmian words.

Let a torus T act effectively on a compact connected cooriented contact manifold, and let Psi be the natural momentum map on the symplectization. We prove that, if dim T > 2, the union of the origin with the image of Psi is a convex polyhedral cone, the non-zero level sets of Psi are connected (while the zero level set can be disconnected), and the momentum map is open as a map to its image. This answers a question posed by Eugene Lerman, who proved similar results when the zero level set is empty. We also analyze examples with dim T <= 2.
Maximizing a combinatorial expression arising from crowd estimation
We determine, within 1, the value of N for which sum (s1 choose i)(s2 choose N)(s1 choose N-i)(N choose i) achieves its maximum value. Here s1 and s2 are fixed integers. This problem arises in studying the most likely value for the size of the union of A, B, and C if A and C are disjoint sets of size s1, and B is a set of size s2. Attempting to remove the 1 unit of indeterminacy leads to interesting conjectures about a family of rational functions.
Factorial Schur functions via the six vertex model
For a particular set of Boltzmann weights and a particular boundary condition for the six vertex model in statistical mechanics, we compute explicitly the partition function and show it to be equal to a factorial Schur function, giving a new proof of a theorem of Lascoux.

We examine the empirical distribution of the eigenvalues and the eigenvectors of adjacency matrices of sparse regular random graphs. We find that when the degree sequence of the graph slowly increases to infinity with the number of vertices, the empirical spectral distribution converges to the semicircle law. Moreover, we prove concentration estimates on the number of eigenvalues over progressively smaller intervals. We also show that, with high probability, all the eigenvectors are delocalized.

We solve the conjecture posed by Fill, Scheinerman and Singer-Cohen and show the equivalence of the sharp threshold functions of the random intersection graph G(n,m,p) with $m >= n^3$ and a graph in which each edge appears independently. Moreover we prove sharper equivalence results under some additional assumptions.
4-regular and self-dual analogs of fullerenes
An i-hedrite is a 4-regular plane graph with faces of size 2, 3 and 4. We do a short survey of their known properties and explain some new algorithms that allow their efficient enumeration. Using this we give the symmetry groups of all i-hedrites and the minimal representative for each. We also review the link of 4-hedrites with knot theory and the classification of 4-hedrites with simple central circuits. An i-self-hedrite is a self-dual plane graph with faces and vertices of size/degree 2, 3 and 4. We give a new efficient algorithm for enumerating them based on i-hedrites. We give a classification of their possible symmetry groups and a classification of 4-self-hedrites of symmetry T, Td in terms of the Goldberg-Coxeter construction. Then we give a method for enumerating 4-self-hedrites with simple zigzags.

We study the $SIG$ dimension of trees under $L_{\infty}$ metric and answer an open problem posed by Michael and Quint (Discrete Applied Mathematics: 127, pages 447-460, 2003). Let $T$ be a tree with atleast two vertices. For each $v\in V(T)$, let leaf-degree$(v)$ denote the number of neighbours of $v$ that are leaves. We define the maximum leaf-degree as $α(T) = \max_{x \in V(T)}$ leaf-degree$(x)$. Let $S = \{v\in V(T) |$ leaf-degree$(v) = α\}$. If $|S| = 1$, we define $β(T) = α(T) - 1$. Otherwise define $β(T) = α(T)$. We show that for a tree $T$, $SIG_\infty(T) = \lceil \log_2(β+ 2)\rceil$ where $β= β(T)$, provided $β$ is not of the form $2^k - 1$, for some positive integer $k \geq 1$. If $β= 2^k - 1$, then $SIG_\infty (T) \in \{k, k+1\}$. We show that both values are possible.

We address the study of controllability of a closed quantum system whose dynamical Lie algebra is generated by adjacency matrices of graphs. We characterize a large family of graphs that renders a system controllable. The key property is a novel graph-theoretic feature consisting of a particularly disordered cycle structure. Disregarding efficiency of control functions, but choosing subfamilies of sparse graphs, the results translate into continuous-time quantum walks for universal computation.
Bipartite divisor graphs for integer subsets

Inspired by connections described in a recent paper by Mark L. Lewis, between the common divisor graph $\Ga(X)$ and the prime vertex graph $Δ(X)$, for a set $X$ of positive integers, we define the bipartite divisor graph $B(X)$, and show that many of these connections flow naturally from properties of $B(X)$. In particular we establish links between parameters of these three graphs, such as number and diameter of components, and we characterise bipartite graphs that can arise as $B(X)$ for some $X$. Also we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions, in terms of subconfigurations of $B(X)$, for one $Γ(X)$ or $Δ(X)$ to contain a complete subgraph of size 3 or 4.
Dismantlability of weakly systolic complexes and applications

The main goal of this paper is proving the fixed point theorem for finite groups acting on weakly systolic complexes. As corollaries we obtain results concerning classifying spaces for the family of finite subgroups of weakly systolic groups and conjugacy classes of finite subgroups. As immediate consequences we get new results on systolic complexes and groups. The fixed point theorem is proved by using a graph-theoretical tool - dismantlability. In particular we show that 1-skeleta of weakly systolic complexes, i.e. weakly bridged graphs, are dismantlable. On the way we show numerous characterizations of weakly bridged graphs and weakly systolic complexes.
The Non-commutative Topological Vertex and Wall Crossing Phenomena

We propose a generalization of the topological vertex, which we call the "non-commutative topological vertex". This gives open BPS invariants for a toric Calabi-Yau manifold without compact 4-cycles, where we have D0/D2/D6-branes wrapping holomorphic 0/2/6-cycles, as well as D2-branes wrapping disks whose boundaries are on D4-branes wrapping non-compact Lagrangian 3-cycles. The vertex is defined combinatorially using the crystal melting model proposed recently, and depends on the value of closed string moduli at infinity. The vertex in one special chamber gives the same answer as that computed by the ordinary topological vertex. We prove an identify expressing the non-commutative topological vertex of a toric Calabi-Yau manifold X as a specialization of the closed BPS partition function of an orbifold of X, thus giving a closed expression for our vertex. We also clarify the action of the Weyl group of an affine A_L Lie algebra on chambers, and comment on the generalization of our results to the case of refined BPS invariants.
