In this paper we prove the Bannai-Ito conjecture, namely that there are only finitely many distance-regular graphs of fixed valency greater than two.
Generalized $D$-graphs for Nonzero Roots of the Matching Polynomial
Recently, Bauer et al. (J Graph Theory 55(4) (2007), 343--358) introduced a graph operator $D(G)$, called the $D$-graph of $G$, which has been useful in investigating the structural aspects of maximal Tutte sets in $G$ with a perfect matching. Among other results, they proved a characterization of maximal Tutte sets in terms of maximal independent sets in the graph $D(G)$ and maximal extreme sets in $G$. This was later extended to graphs without perfect matchings by Busch et al. (Discrete Appl. Math. 155 (2007), 2487--2495). Let $θ$ be a real number and $μ(G,x)$ be the matching polynomial of a graph $G$. Let $\textnormal{mult} (θ, G)$ be the multiplicity of $θ$ as a root of $μ(G,x)$. We observe that the notion of $D$-graph is implicitly related to $θ=0$. In this paper, we give a natural generalization of the $D$-graph of $G$ for any real number $θ$, and denote this new operator by $D_θ(G)$, so that $D_θ(G)$ coincides with $D(G)$ when $θ=0$. We prove a characterization of maximal $θ$-Tutte sets which are $θ$-analogue of maximal Tutte sets in $G$. In particular, we show that for any $X \subseteq V(G)$, $|X|>1$, and any real number $θ$, $\m(θ, G \setminus X)=\m(θ, G)+|X|$ if and only if $\m(θ, G \setminus uv)=\m(θ, G)+2$ for any $u, v \in X$, $u \not = v$, thus extending the preceding work of Bauer et al. and Busch et al. which established the result for the case $θ=0$.
The competition number of a graph with exactly two holes

Let D be an acyclic digraph. The competition graph of D is a graph which has the same vertex set as D and has an edge between x and y if and only if there exists a vertex v in D such that (x,v) and (y,v) are arcs of D. For any graph G, G together with sufficiently many isolated vertices is the competition graph of some acyclic digraph. The competition number k(G) of G is the smallest number of such isolated vertices.
A hole of a graph is a cycle of length at least 4 as an induced subgraph. In 2005, Kim [5] conjectured that the competition number of a graph with h holes is at most h+1. Though Li and Chang [8] and Kim et al. [7] showed that her conjecture is true when the holes do not overlap much, it still remains open for the case where the holes share edges in an arbitrary way. In order to share an edge, a graph must have at least two holes and so it is natural to start with a graph with exactly two holes. In this paper, the conjecture is proved true for such a graph.
Graphs having many holes but with small competition numbers

The competition number k(G) of a graph G is the smallest number k such that G together with k isolated vertices added is the competition graph of an acyclic digraph. A chordless cycle of length at least 4 of a graph is called a hole of the graph. The number of holes of a graph is closely related to its competition number as the competition number of a graph which does not contain a hole is at most one and the competition number of a complete bipartite graph $K_{\lfloor \frac{n}{2} \rfloor, \lceil \frac{n}{2} \rceil}$ which has so many holes that no more holes can be added is the largest among those of graphs with n vertices. In this paper, we show that even if a connected graph G has many holes, the competition number of G can be as small as 2 under some assumption. In addition, we show that, for a connected graph G with exactly h holes and at most one non-edge maximal clique, if all the holes of G are pairwise edge-disjoint and the clique number $ω= ω(G)$ of G satisfies $2 \leq ω\leq h+1$, then the competition number of G is at most $h - ω+ 3$.
Looping of the numbers game and the alcoved hypercube

We study in detail the so-called looping case of Mozes's game of numbers, which concerns the (finite) orbits in the reflection representation of affine Weyl groups situated on the boundary of the Tits cone. We give a simple proof that all configurations in the orbit are obtainable from each other by playing the numbers game, and give a strategy for going from one configuration to another. The strategy gives rise to a partition of the finite Weyl group into finitely many graded posets, one for each extending vertex of the associated extended Dynkin diagram. These are selfdual and mutually isomorphic, and dual to the triangulation of the unit hypercube by reflecting hyperplanes, studied by many authors. Unlike the weak and Bruhat orders, the top degree is cubic in the number of vertices of the graph. We explicitly compute the Hilbert polynomial of the poset.
Bijective proofs for Schur function identities
Gurevich, Pyatov and Saponov recently stated an expansion for the product of two Schur functions and gave a proof based on the Pluecker relations. Here we show that this identity is in fact a special case of a quite general Schur function identity, which was stated and proved in a paper by Fulmek and Kleber, where it was used to prove bijectively Dodgsons condensation formula and the Pluecker relations, but was not paid further attention: So we take the opportunity to make obvious the range of applicability of this identity by giving concrete examples, accompanied by many graphical illustrations.
On the Generalized Climbing Stairs Problem
Let $\mathcal S$ be a subset of the positive integers, and $M$ be a positive integer. Mohammad K. Azarian, inspired by work of Tony Colledge, considered the number of ways to climb a staircase containing $n$ stairs using "step-sizes" $s \in \mathcal S$ and multiplicities at most $M$.
In this exposition, we find a solution via generating functions, i.e., an expression which counts the number of partitions $n = \sum_{s \in \mathcal S} m_s s$ satisfying $0 \leq m_s \leq M$. We then use this result to answer a series of questions posed by Azarian, thereby showing a link with ten sequences listed in the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences. We conclude by posing open questions which seek to count the number of compositions of $n$.

We give asymptotic sharp estimates for the cardinality of a set of residue classes with the property that the representation function is bounded by a prescribed number. We then use this to obtain an analogous result for sets of integers, answering an old question of Simon Sidon.
A q-analogue of the four functions theorem
In this article we give a proof of a q-analogue of the celebrated four functions theorem. This analogue was conjectured by Bjorner and includes as special cases both the four functions theorem and also Bjorner's q-analogue of the FKG inequality.
Cycle up-down permutations
A permutation is defined to be cycle-up-down if it is a product of cycles that, when written starting with their smallest element, have an up-down pattern. We prove bijectively and analytically that these permutations are enumerated by the Euler numbers, and we study the distribution of some statistics on them, as well as on up-down permutations, on all permutations, and on a generalization of cycle-up-down permutations. The statistics include the number of cycles of even and odd length, the number of left-to-right minima, and the number of extreme elements.

The energy of random graphs

In 1970s, Gutman introduced the concept of the energy $\En(G)$ for a simple graph $G$, which is defined as the sum of the absolute values of the eigenvalues of $G$. This graph invariant has attracted much attention, and many lower and upper bounds have been established for some classes of graphs among which bipartite graphs are of particular interest. But there are only a few graphs attaining the equalities of those bounds. We however obtain an exact estimate of the energy for almost all graphs by Wigner's semi-circle law, which generalizes a result of Nikiforov. We further investigate the energy of random multipartite graphs by considering a generalization of Wigner matrix, and obtain some estimates of the energy for random multipartite graphs.
Homomorphism and embedding universal structures for restricted classes
This paper unifies problems and results related to (embedding) universal and homomorphism universal structures. On the one side we give a new combinatorial proof of the existence of universal objects for homomorphism defined classes of structures (thus reproving a result of Cherlin, Shelah and Shi) and on the other side this leads to the new proof of the existence of dual objects (established by Nešetřil and Tardif). Our explicite approach has further applications to special structures such as variants of the rational Urysohn space. We also solve a related extremal problem which shows the optimality (of the used lifted arities) of our construction (and a related problem of A. Atserias).

We prove that for any nonnegative integers $n$ and $r$ the binomial sum $$ \sum_{k=-n}^n\binom{2n}{n-k}k^{2r} $$ is divisible by $2^{2n-\min\{α(n),α(r)\}}$, where $α(n)$ denotes the number of 1's in the binary expansion of $n$. This confirms a recent conjecture of Guo and Zeng.
Quadrangles embedded in metasymplectic spaces

During the final steps in the classification of the Moufang quadrangles by Jacques Tits and Richard Weiss a new class of Moufang quadrangles unexpectedly turned up. Subsequently Bernhard Muhlherr and Hendrik Van Maldeghem showed that this class arises as the fixed points and hyperlines of certain involutions of a metasymplectic space (or equivalently a building of type F_4). In the same paper they also showed that other types of Moufang quadrangles can be embedded in a metasymplectic space as points and hyperlines.
In this paper, we reverse the question: given a (thick) quadrangle embedded in a metasymplectic space as points and hyperlines, when is such a quadrangle a Moufang quadrangle?
Pattern avoidance and RSK-like algorithms for alternating permutations and Young tableaux

We define a class L_{n, k} of permutations that generalizes alternating (up-down) permutations and give bijective proofs of certain pattern-avoidance results for this class. As a special case of our results, we give two bijections between the set A_{2n}(1234) of alternating permutations of length 2n with no four-term increasing subsequence and standard Young tableaux of shape (3^n), and between the set A_{2n + 1}(1234) and standard Young tableaux of shape (3^{n - 1}, 2, 1). This represents the first enumeration of alternating permutations avoiding a pattern of length four. We also extend previous work on doubly-alternating permutations (alternating permutations whose inverses are alternating) to our more general context.
The set L_{n, k} may be viewed as the set of reading words of the standard Young tableaux of a certain skew shape. In the last section of the paper, we expand our study to consider pattern avoidance in the reading words of standard Young tableaux of any skew shape. We show bijectively that the number of standard Young tableaux of shape lambda/mu whose reading words avoid 213 is a natural mu-analogue of the Catalan numbers (and in particular does not depend on lambda, up to a simple technical condition), and that there are similar results for the patterns 132, 231 and 312.
On certain non-unique solutions of the Stieltjes moment problem

We construct explicit solutions of a number of Stieltjes moment problems based on moments of the form $ρ_{1}^{(r)}(n)=(2rn)!$ and $ρ_{2}^{(r)}(n)=[(rn)!]^{2}$, $r=1,2,...$, $n=0,1,2,...$, \textit{i.e.} we find functions $W^{(r)}_{1,2}(x)>0$ satisfying $\int_{0}^{\infty}x^{n}W^{(r)}_{1,2}(x)dx = ρ_{1,2}^{(r)}(n)$. It is shown using criteria for uniqueness and non-uniqueness (Carleman, Krein, Berg, Pakes, Stoyanov) that for $r>1$ both $ρ_{1,2}^{(r)}(n)$ give rise to non-unique solutions. Examples of such solutions are constructed using the technique of the inverse Mellin transform supplemented by a Mellin convolution. We outline a general method of generating non-unique solutions for moment problems generalizing $ρ_{1,2}^{(r)}(n)$, such as the product $ρ_{1}^{(r)}(n)\cdotρ_{2}^{(r)}(n)$ and $[(rn)!]^{p}$, $p=3,4,...$.
Symmetric group actions on the cohomology of configurations in $R^d$
In this paper we deal with the action of the symmetric group on the cohomology of the configuration space $C_n(d)$ of $n$ points in $\mathbb{R}^d$. This topic has been studied by several authors (see the introduction). On the cohomology algebra $H^*(C_n(d); \mathbb{C})$ there is, in addition to the natural $S_n$-action, an extended action of $S_{n+1}$; this was first shown for the case when $d$ is even by Mathieu, Robinson and Whitehouse and the second author. For the case when $d$ is odd it was shown by Mathieu (anyway we will give an elementary algebraic construction of the extended action for this case). The purpose of this article is to present some results that can be obtained, in an elementary way, exploiting the interplay between the extended action and the standard action.
Biranks for Partitions into 2 Colors
In 2003, Hammond and Lewis defined a statistic on partitions into 2 colors which combinatorially explains certain well known partition congruences mod 5. We give two analogs of Hammond and Lewis's birank statistic. One analog is in terms of Dyson's rank and the second uses the 5-core crank due to Garvan, Kim and Stanton. We discuss Andrews's bicrank statistic and how it may be extended. We also generalize the Hammond-Lewis birank to a multirank for multipartitions and the Andrews bicrank to a multicrank for extended multipartitions. These both give combinatorial interpretations for multipartition congruences modulo all primes t>3.

We introduce a moduli functor for varieties whose tropicalization realizes a given weighted fan and show that this functor is an algebraic space in general, and is represented by a scheme of finite type when the associated toric variety is quasiprojective. We study the geometry of these tropical realization spaces for the matroid fans studied by Ardila and Klivans, and show that the tropical realization space of a matroid fan is a torus torsor over the realization space of the matroid. As a consequence, we deduce that these tropical realization spaces satisfy Murphy's Law.
