Sequences with good correlation properties are widely used in engineering applications, especially in the area of communications. Among the known sequences, cyclotomic families have the optimal autocorrelation property. In this paper, we decide the cross-correlation function of the known cyclotomic sequences completely. Moreover, to get our results, the relations between the multiplier group and the decimations of the characteristic sequence are also established for an arbitrary difference set.
Autocorrelation-Run Formula for Binary Sequences
The autocorrelation function and the run structure are two basic notions for binary sequences, and have been used as two independent postulates to test randomness of binary sequences ever since Golomb 1955. In this paper, we prove for binary sequence that the autocorrelation function is in fact completely determined by its run structure.
A Natural Bijection between Permutations and a Family of Descending Plane Partitions

We construct a direct natural bijection between descending plane partitions without any special part and permutations. The directness is in the sense that the bijection avoids any reference to nonintersecting lattice paths. The advantage of the bijection is that it provides an interpretation for the seemingly long list of conditions needed to define descending plane partitions. Unfortunately, the bijection does not relate the number of parts of the descending plane partition with the number of inversions of the permutation as one might have expected from the conjecture of Mills, Robbins and Rumsey, although there is a simple expression for the number of inversions of a permutation in terms of the corresponding descending plane partition.

In this article we study the curvature properties of the order complex of a graded poset under a metric that we call the ``orthoscheme metric''. In addition to other results, we characterize which rank 4 posets have CAT(0) orthoscheme complexes and by applying this theorem to standard posets and complexes associated with four-generator Artin groups, we are able to show that the 5-string braid group is the fundamental group of a compact nonpositively curved space.

A lattice path matroid is a transversal matroid for which some collection of incomparable intervals in some linear order on the ground set is a presentation. We characterize the minor-closed class of lattice path matroids by its excluded minors.

We show how Viennot's combinatorial theory of orthogonal polynomials may be used to generalize some recent results of Sukumar and Hodges on the matrix entries in powers of certain operators in a representation of su(1,1). Our results link these calculations to finding the moments and inverse polynomial coefficients of certain Laguerre polynomials and Meixner polynomials of the second kind. As an immediate consequence of results by Koelink, Groenevelt and Van Der Jeugt, for the related operators, substitutions into essentially the same Laguerre polynomials and Meixner polynomials of the second kind may be used to express their eigenvectors. Our combinatorial approach explains and generalizes this "coincidence".

We consider a class of graphs $G$ such that the height of the edge ideal $I(G)$ is half of the number $\sharp V(G)$ of the vertices. We give Cohen-Macaulay criteria for such graphs.
Note on the 4- and 5-leaf powers
Motivated by the problem of reconstructing evolutionary history, Nishimura et al. defined $k$-leaf powers as the class of graphs $G=(V,E)$ which has a $k$-leaf root $T$, i.e., $T$ is a tree such that the vertices of $G$ are exactly the leaves of $T$ and two vertices in $V$ are adjacent in $G$ if and only if their distance in $T$ is at most $k$. It is known that leaf powers are chordal graphs. Brandstädt and Le proved that every $k$-leaf power is a $(k+2)$-leaf power and every 3-leaf power is a $k$-leaf power for $k\geq 3$. They asked whether a $k$-leaf power is also a $(k+1)$-leaf power for any $k\geq 4$. Fellows et al. gave an example of a 4-leaf power which is not a 5-leaf power. It is interesting to find all the graphs which have both 4-leaf roots and 5-leaf roots. In this paper, we prove that, if $G$ is a 4-leaf power with $L(G)\neq \emptyset$, then $G$ is also a 5-leaf power, where $L(G)$ denotes the set of leaves of $G$.
The $r$-Bell numbers
The notion of generalized Bell numbers has appeared in several works but there is no systematic treatise on this topic. In this paper we fill this gap. We discuss the most important combinatorial, algebraic and analytic properties of these numbers which generalize the similar properties of the Bell numbers. Most of these results seem to be new. It turns out that in a paper of Whitehead these numbers appeared in a very different context. In addition, we introduce the so-called $r$-Bell polynomials.
Branched polymers and hyperplane arrangements
We generalize the construction of connected branched polymers and the notion of the volume of the space of connected branched polymers studied by Brydges and Imbrie, and Kenyon and Winkler to any hyperplane arrangement A. The volume of the resulting configuration space of connected branched polymers associated to the hyperplane arrangement A is expressed through the value of the characteristic polynomial of A at 0. We give a more general definition of the space of branched polymers, where we do not require connectivity, and introduce the notion of q-volume for it, which is expressed through the value of the characteristic polynomial of A at -q. Finally, we relate the volume of the space of branched polymers to broken circuits and show that the cohomology ring of the space of branched polymers is isomorphic to the Orlik-Solomon algebra.

We determine the minimum sum--connectivity index of bicyclic graphs with $n$ vertices and matching number $m$, where $2\le m\le \lfloor\frac{n}{2}\rfloor$, the minimum and the second minimum, as well as the maximum and the second maximum sum--connectivity indices of bicyclic graphs with $n\ge 5$ vertices. The extremal graphs are characterized.

A hollow axis-aligned box is the boundary of the cartesian product of $d$ compact intervals in R^d. We show that for d\geq 3, if any 2^d of a collection of hollow axis-aligned boxes have non-empty intersection, then the whole collection has non-empty intersection; and if any 5 of a collection of hollow axis-aligned rectangles in R^2 have non-empty intersection, then the whole collection has non-empty intersection. The values 2^d for d\geq 3 and 5 for d=2 are the best possible in general. We also characterize the collections of hollow boxes which would be counterexamples if 2^d were lowered to 2^d-1, and 5 to 4, respectively.

We provide a simple algorithm for finding the optimal upper bound for sums of products of matrix entries of the form
S_pi(N) := sum_{j_1, ..., j_2m = 1}^N t^1_{j_1 j_2} t^2_{j_3 j_4} ... t^m_{j_2m-1 j_2m} where some of the summation indices are constrained to be equal. The upper bound is easily obtained from a graph G associated to the constraints in the sum.

In this paper we prove that a deformed tensor product of two Lefschetz algebras is a Lefschetz algebra. We then use this result in conjunction with some basic Schubert calculus to prove that the coinvariant ring of a finite reflection has the strong Lefschetz property.
On the maximum number of edges of non-flowerable coin graphs

For $n\in\nats$ and $3\leq k\leq n$ we compute the exact value of $E_k(n)$, the maximum number of edges of a simple planar graph on $n$ vertices where each vertex bounds an $\ell$-gon where $\ell\geq k$. The lower bound of $E_k(n)$ is obtained by explicit construction, and the matching upper bound is obtained by using Integer Programming (IP.) We then use this result to conjecture the maximum number of edges of a non-flowerable coin graph on $n$ vertices. A {\em flower} is a coin graph representation of the wheel graph. A collection of coins or discs in the Euclidean plane is {\em non-flowerable} if no flower can be formed by coins from the collection.
The excluded minor structure theorem with planarly embedded wall

A graph is nearly embedded in a surface if it consists of graph $G_0$ that is embedded in the surface, together with a bounded number of vortices having no large transactions. It is shown that every large wall (or grid minor) in a nearly embedded graph, many rows of which intersect the embedded subgraph $G_0$ of the near-embedding, contains a large subwall that is planarly embedded within $G_0$. This result provides some hidden details needed for a strong version of the Robertson and Seymour's excluded minor theorem as presented in [K. Kawarabayashi, B. Mohar, Some recent progress and applications in graph minor theory, Graphs Combin. 23 (2007) 1-46].

Note on the energy of regular graphs

For a simple graph $G$, the energy $\mathcal{E}(G)$ is defined as the sum of the absolute values of all the eigenvalues of its adjacency matrix $A(G)$. Let $n, m$, respectively, be the number of vertices and edges of $G$. One well-known inequality is that $\mathcal{E}(G)\leq λ_1+\sqrt{(n-1)(2m-λ_1)}$, where $λ_1$ is the spectral radius. If $G$ is $k$-regular, we have $\mathcal{E}(G)\leq k+\sqrt{k(n-1)(n-k)}$. Denote $\mathcal{E}_0=k+\sqrt{k(n-1)(n-k)}$. Balakrishnan [{\it Linear Algebra Appl.} {\bf 387} (2004) 287--295] proved that for each $ε>0$, there exist infinitely many $n$ for each of which there exists a $k$-regular graph $G$ of order $n$ with $k< n-1$ and $\frac{\mathcal{E}(G)}{\mathcal{E}_0}<ε$, and proposed an open problem that, given a positive integer $n\geq 3$, and $ε>0$, does there exist a $k$-regular graph $G$ of order $n$ such that $\frac{\mathcal{E}(G)}{\mathcal{E}_0}>1-ε$. In this paper, we show that for each $ε>0$, there exist infinitely many such $n$ that $\frac{\mathcal{E}(G)}{\mathcal{E}_0}>1-ε$. Moreover, we construct another class of simpler graphs which also supports the first assertion that $\frac{\mathcal{E}(G)}{\mathcal{E}_0}<ε$.

The algebra of quantum matrices of a given size supports a rational torus action by automorphisms. It follows from work of Letzter and the first named author that to understand the prime and primitive spectra of this algebra, the first step is to understand the prime ideals that are invariant under the torus action. In this paper, we prove that a family of quantum minors is the set of all quantum minors that belong to a given torus-invariant prime ideal of a quantum matrix algebra if and only if the corresponding family of minors defines a non-empty totally nonnegative cell in the space of totally nonnegative real matrices of the appropriate size. As a corollary, we obtain explicit generating sets of quantum minors for the torus-invariant prime ideals of quantum matrices in the case where the quantisation parameter $q$ is transcendental over $\mathbb{Q}$.
On some analogues of Carlitz's identity for the hyperoctahedral group
We give a new description of the flag major index, introduced by Adin and Roichman, by using a major index defined by Reiner. This allows us to establish a connection between an identity of Reiner and some more recent results due to Chow and Gessel. Furthermore we generalize the main identity of Chow and Gessel by computing the four-variate generating series of descents, major index, length, and number of negative entries over Coxeter groups of type $B$ and $D$.
