Some Non-Trivial Kazhdan-Lusztig Coefficients of an Affine Weyl Group of Type $\tilde A_n$
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we show that the leading coefficient $μ(y,w)$ of some Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials $P_{y,w}$ with $y,w$ in an affine Weyl group of type $\tilde A_n $ is $n+2$. This fact has some consequences on the dimension of first extension groups of finite groups of Lie type with irreducible coefficients.

In How Many Ways Can You Reassemble Several Russian Dolls?
When my brilliant student Thotsaporn "Aek" Thanatipanonda asked me about how many ways can one cover n identical twins, it rang a Bell back to 1981 (see the article). As usual, the method of teaching the computer how to do its own combinatorics, and to use "analysis" (that is really part of discrete math) to enumerate challenging combinatorial objects is even more interesting than the theorems and even the algorithm. Of course, formulas are dead, long live algorithms! But even algorithms are dead, long live meta-algorithms!!

A Multi-Set Identity for Partitions
We prove that the multiset {(RightArmLength,LeftArmLength)} ranging over all cells of all Ferrers diagrams with n cells equals the multiset {(RightArmLength,LegLength)} ranging over all cells of all Ferrers diagrams with n cells, thereby refining a multi-set identity proved by C. Bessenrodt and by Bacher and L. Manivel. Added In revised version: Guo-Niu Han kindly pointed out to us that our main result is contained in reference [B.H] of the present article.

Ascent sequences and upper triangular matrices containing non-negative integers
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper presents a bijection between ascent sequences and upper triangular matrices whose non-negative entries are such that all rows and columns contain at least one non-zero entry. We show the equivalence of several natural statistics on these structures under this bijection and prove that some of these statistics are equidistributed. Several special classes of matrices are shown to have simple formulations in terms of ascent sequences. Binary matrices are shown to correspond to ascent sequences with no two adjacent entries the same. Bidiagonal matrices are shown to be related to order-consecutive set partitions and a simple condition on the ascent sequences generate this class.

Regular Circulant Matrices
We consider the groups of regular circulant matrices over finite fields and integer residue class rings. In both cases we present a formula for the order of these groups. We also make a first step towards finding the algebraic structure of them.

The weak Lefschetz property, monomial ideals, and lozenges
Published in Illinois J. Math. 55 (2011), no. 1, 377--395 • View PublicationBIB
We study the weak Lefschetz property and the Hilbert function of level Artinian monomial almost complete intersections in three variables. Several such families are shown to have the weak Lefschetz property if the characteristic of the base field is zero or greater than the maximal degree of any minimal generator of the ideal. Two of the families have an interesting relation to tilings of hexagons by lozenges. This lends further evidence to a conjecture by Migliore, Miro-Roig, and the second author. Finally, using our results about the weak Lefschetz property, we show that the Hilbert function of each level Artinian monomial almost complete intersection in three variables is peaked strictly unimodal.
Eulerian quasisymmetric functions and cyclic sieving
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is shown that a refined version of a q-analogue of the Eulerian numbers together with the action, by conjugation, of the subgroup of the symmetric group $S_n$ generated by the $n$-cycle $(1,2,...,n)$ on the set of permutations of fixed cycle type and fixed number of excedances provides an instance of the cyclic sieving phenonmenon of Reiner, Stanton and White. The main tool is a class of symmetric functions recently introduced in work of two of the authors.

Moufang quadrangles of mixed type
Published in Glasg. Math. J. 50 (2008), no. 1, 143-161 • Search Publication
In this paper, we present some geometric characterizations of the Moufang quadrangles of mixed type, i.e., the Moufang quadrangles all the points and lines of which are regular. Roughly, we classify generalized quadrangles with enough (to be made precise) regular points and lines with the property that the dual net associated to the regular points satisfy the Axiom of Veblen-Young, or a very weak version of the Axiom of Desargues. As an application we obtain a geometric characterization and axiomatization of the generalized inversive planes arising from the Suzuki-Tits ovoids related to a polarity in a mixed quadrangle. In the perfect case this gives rise to a characterization with one axiom less than in an already known result by the second author.
Ree geometries
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a rank 3 geometry for any Ree group over a not necessarily perfect field and show that its full collineation group is the automorphism group of the corresponding Ree group. A similar result holds for two rank 2 geometries obtained as a truncation of this rank 3 geometry. As an application, we show that a polarity in any Moufang generalized hexagon is unambiguously determined by its set of absolute points, or equivalently, its set of absolute lines.
Automorphism groups of a graph and a vertex-deleted subgraph
Published • View PublicationBIB
Understanding the structure of a graph along with the structure of its subgraphs is important for several problems in graph theory. Two examples are the Reconstruction Conjecture and isomorph-free generation. This paper raises the question of which pairs of groups can be represented as the automorphism groups of a graph and a vertex-deleted subgraph. This, and more surprisingly the analogous question for edge-deleted subgraphs, are answered in the most positive sense using concrete constructions.

On monochromatic solutions of some nonlinear equations in Z/pZ
Published • View PublicationBIB
Consider an arbitrary coloring of integers with finite number of colors. Is it true that there are x, y such that x + y, xy and x have the same color? This is a well-known question of Ramsey theory has not solved yet. In the article we give a positive answer to the last question in the group Z/pZ, where p is a prime number.

Dependent Random Choice
Published • View PublicationBIB
We describe a simple and yet surprisingly powerful probabilistic technique which shows how to find in a dense graph a large subset of vertices in which all (or almost all) small subsets have many common neighbors. Recently this technique has had several striking applications to Extremal Graph Theory, Ramsey Theory, Additive Combinatorics, and Combinatorial Geometry. In this survey we discuss some of them.

O-cycles, vertex-oriented graphs, and the four colour theore
In 1880, P. G. Tait showed that the four colour theorem is equivalent to the assertion that every 3-regular planar graph without cut-edges is 3-edge-colourable, and in 1891, J. Petersen proved that every 3-regular graph with at most two cut-edges has a 1-factor. In this paper, we introduce the notion of collapsing all edges of a 1-factor of a 3-regular planar graph, thereby obtaining what we call a vertex-oriented 4-regular planar graph. We also introduce the notion of o-colouring a vertex-oriented 4-regular planar graph, and we prove that the four colour theorem is equivalent to the assertion that every vertex-oriented 4-regular planar graph without nontransversally oriented cut-vertex (VOGWOC in short) is 3-o-colourable. This work proposes an alternative avenue of investigation in the search to find a more conceptual proof of the four colour theorem, and we are able to prove that every VOGWOC is o-colourable (although we have not yet been able to prove 3-o-colourability).

Noncrossing partitions and the shard intersection order
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define a new lattice structure on the elements of a finite Coxeter group W. This lattice, called the shard intersection order, is weaker than the weak order and has the noncrossing partition lattice NC(W) as a sublattice. The new construction of NC(W) yields a new proof that NC(W) is a lattice. The shard intersection order is graded and its rank generating function is the W-Eulerian polynomial. Many order-theoretic properties of the shard intersection order, like Mobius number, number of maximal chains, etc., are exactly analogous to the corresponding properties of NC(W). There is a natural dimension-preserving bijection between simplices in the order complex of the shard intersection order (i.e. chains in the shard intersection order) and simplices in a certain pulling triangulation of the W-permutohedron. Restricting the bijection to the order complex of NC(W) yields a bijection to simplices in a pulling triangulation of the W-associahedron. The shard intersection order is defined indirectly via the polyhedral geometry of the reflecting hyperplanes of W. Indeed, most of the results of the paper are proven in the more general setting of simplicial hyperplane arrangements.
Asymptotic enumeration of correlation-immune boolean functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
A boolean function of $n$ boolean variables is {correlation-immune} of order $k$ if the function value is uncorrelated with the values of any $k$ of the arguments. Such functions are of considerable interest due to their cryptographic properties, and are also related to the orthogonal arrays of statistics and the balanced hypercube colourings of combinatorics. The {weight} of a boolean function is the number of argument values that produce a function value of 1. If this is exactly half the argument values, that is, $2^{n-1}$ values, a correlation-immune function is called {resilient}. An asymptotic estimate of the number $N(n,k)$ of $n$-variable correlation-immune boolean functions of order $k$ was obtained in 1992 by Denisov for constant $k$. Denisov repudiated that estimate in 2000, but we will show that the repudiation was a mistake. The main contribution of this paper is an asymptotic estimate of $N(n,k)$ which holds if $k$ increases with $n$ within generous limits and specialises to functions with a given weight, including the resilient functions. In the case of $k=1$, our estimates are valid for all weights.

The number of cycles of specified normalized length in permutations
We compute the limiting distribution, as n approaches infinity, of the number of cycles of length between gamma n and delta n in a permutation of [n] chosen uniformly at random, for constants gamma, delta such that 1/(k+1) <= gamma < delta <= 1/k for some integer k. This distribution is supported on {0, 1, ... k} and has 0th, 1st, ..., kth moments equal to those of a Poisson distribution with parameter log (delta/gamma). For more general choices of gamma, delta we show that such a limiting distribution exists, which can be given explicitly in terms of certain integrals over intersections of hypercubes with half-spaces; these integrals are analytically intractable but a recurrence specifying them can be given. The results herein provide a basis of comparison for similar statistics on restricted classes of permutations.

Focusing of Maximum Vertex Degrees in Random Faulty Scaled Sector Graphs
Published in Pan-American Mathematical Journal, 2012, vol. 22(2), pp. 1--17 • Search Publication
In this paper we study the behavior of maximum out/in-degree of binomial/Poisson random scaled sector graphs in the presence of random vertex and edge faults. We prove that the probability distribution of maximum degrees for random faulty scaled sector graphs with $n$ vertices, where each vertex spans a sector of $α$ radians, with radius $r_n\ll \sqrt{\ln n/n}$, become concentrated on two consecutive integers, under some natural assumptions of faulty probabilities.

Laws of Large Numbers of Subgraphs in Directed Random Geometric Networks
Published in IEJPAM vol.2 no. 2, 2010 69-79 • Search Publication
Given independent random points $\mathcal{X}_n=\{X_1,...,X_n\}$ in $\mathbb{R}^2$, drawn according to some probability density function $f$ on $\mathbb{R}^2$, and a cutoff $r_n>0$ we construct a random geometric digraph $G(\mathcal{X}_n,\mathcal{Y}_n,r_n)$ with vertex set $\mathcal{X}_n$. Each vertex $X_i$ is assigned uniformly at random a sector $S_i$, of central angle $α$ with inclination $Y_i$, in a circle of radius $r_n$ (with vertex $X_i$ as the origin). An arc is present from $X_i$ to $X_j$, if $X_j$ falls in $S_i$. We also introduce another random geometric digraph $G(\mathcal{X}_n,\mathcal{R}_n)$ with vertex set $\mathcal{X}_n=\{X_1,...,X_n\}$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\ge1$ and an arc present from $X_i$ to $X_j$ if $||X_i-X_j||<R_{n,i}$. Here $\{R_{n,i}\}_{i\ge1}$ are i.i.d. random variables and we may take an arbitrary norm $||\cdot||$. In this paper we investigate two kinds of small subgraphs--induced and isolated--in the above two directed networks, which contribute to understanding the local topology of many spatial networks, such as wireless communication networks. We give some strong laws of large numbers of subgraph counts thus extending those results of Penrose [Random Geometric Graphs, Oxford University Press, 2003].

On Fall Colorings of Graphs
A fall $k$-coloring of a graph $G$ is a proper $k$-coloring of $G$ such that each vertex of $G$ sees all $k$ colors on its closed neighborhood. We denote ${\rm Fall}(G)$ the set of all positive integers $k$ for which $G$ has a fall $k$-coloring. In this paper, we study fall colorings of lexicographic product of graphs and categorical product of graphs and answer a question of \cite{dun} about fall colorings of categorical product of complete graphs. Then, we study fall colorings of union of graphs. Then, we prove that fall $k$-colorings of a graph can be reduced into proper $k$-colorings of graphs in a specified set. Then, we characterize fall colorings of Mycielskian of graphs. Finally, we prove that for each bipartite graph $G$, ${\rm Fall}(G^{c})\subseteq \{χ(G^{c}) \}$ and it is polynomial time to decision whether or not ${\rm Fall}(G^{c})=\{χ(G^{c}) \}$.
