Lattices of Paths: Representation Theory and Valuations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study some distributive lattices arising in the combinatorics of lattice paths. In particular, for the Dyck, Motzkin and Schroder lattices we describe the spectrum and we determine explicitly the Euler characteristic in terms of natural parameters of lattice paths.

Algebraic proof of Brooks' theorem
Published in Discrete Math. 310, no. 23, 3426-3428 (2010) • View PublicationBIB
We give a proof of Brooks' theorem and its list coloring extension using the algebraic method of Alon and Tarsi; this also shows that the Brooks' theorem remains valid in a more general game coloring setting.

A Simple Proof of an Inequality Connecting the Alternating Number of Independent Sets and the Decycling Number
Published • View PublicationBIB
If alpha=alpha(G) is the maximum size of an independent set and s_{k} equals the number of stable sets of cardinality k in graph G, then I(G;x)=s_{0}+s_{1}x+...+s_{alpha}x^{alpha} is the independence polynomial of G. In this paper we provide an elementary proof of the inequality claiming that the absolute value of I(G;-1) is not greater than 2^phi(G), for every graph G, where phi(G) is its decycling number.
An Eberhard-like theorem for pentagons and heptagons
Published • View PublicationBIB
Eberhard proved that for every sequence $(p_k), 3\le k\le r, k\ne 5,7$ of non-negative integers satisfying Euler's formula $\sum_{k\ge3} (6-k) p_k = 12$, there are infinitely many values $p_6$ such that there exists a simple convex polyhedron having precisely $p_k$ faces of length $k$ for every $k\ge3$, where $p_k=0$ if $k>r$. In this paper we prove a similar statement when non-negative integers $p_k$ are given for $3\le k\le r$, except for $k=5$ and $k=7$. We prove that there are infinitely many values $p_5,p_7$ such that there exists a simple convex polyhedron having precisely $p_k$ faces of length $k$ for every $k\ge3$. %, where $p_k=0$ if $k>r$. We derive an extension to arbitrary closed surfaces, yielding maps of arbitrarily high face-width. Our proof suggests a general method for obtaining results of this kind.

Quasi-random graphs and graph limits
Published • View PublicationBIB
We use the theory of graph limits to study several quasi-random properties, mainly dealing with various versions of hereditary subgraph counts. The main idea is to transfer the properties of (sequences of) graphs to properties of graphons, and to show that the resulting graphon properties only can be satisfied by constant graphons. These quasi-random properties have been studied before by other authors, but our approach gives proofs that we find cleaner, and which avoid the error terms and epsilons in the traditional arguments using the Szemeredi regularity lemma. On the other hand, other technical problems sometimes arise in analysing the graphon properties; in particular, a measure-theoretic problem on elimination of null sets that arises in this way is treated in an appendix.
An obstacle to a decomposition theorem for near-regular matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
Seymour's Decomposition Theorem for regular matroids states that any matroid representable over both GF(2) and GF(3) can be obtained from matroids that are graphic, cographic, or isomorphic to R10 by 1-, 2-, and 3-sums. It is hoped that similar characterizations hold for other classes of matroids, notably for the class of near-regular matroids. Suppose that all near-regular matroids can be obtained from matroids that belong to a few basic classes through k-sums. Also suppose that these basic classes are such that, whenever a class contains all graphic matroids, it does not contain all cographic matroids. We show that in that case 3-sums will not suffice.

Dominating sets and Domination polynomials of Cycles
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let G=(V,E) be a simple graph. A set S\subset V is a dominating set of G, if every vertex in V§is adjacent to at least one vertex in S. Let {\mathcal C}_n^i be the family of dominating sets of a cycle C_n with cardinality i, and let d(C_n,i) = |{\mathcal C}_n^i. In this paper, we construct {\mathcal C}_n^i, and obtain a recursive formula for d(C_n, i). Using this recursive formula, we consider the polynomial D(C_n, x) = \sum_{i=1}^n d(C_n, i)x^i, which we call domination polynomial of cycles and obtain some properties of this polynomial.

The Domination Polynomials of Cubic graphs of order 10
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let G be a simple graph of order n. The domination polynomial of G is the polynomial D(G,x)=\sum_{i=γ(G)}^{n} d(G,i) x^{i}, where d(G,i) is the number of dominating sets of G of size i, and γ(G) is the domination number of G. In this paper we study the domination polynomials of cubic graphs of order 10. As a consequence, we show that the Petersen graph is determined uniquely by its domination polynomial.

A tropical view on the Bruhat-Tits building of SL and its compactifications
Published • View PublicationBIB
We describe the stabilizers of points in the Bruhat-Tits building of the group SL with tropical geometry. There are several compactifications of this building associated to algebraic representations of SL. We show that the fans used to compactify apartments in this theory are given by tropical Schur polynomials.

A formula expressing cumulants in terms of iterated integrals of the distribution function is derived. It generalizes results of Jones and Balakrishnan who computed expressions for cumulants up to order 4.

Balanced lines in two-coloured point sets
Let $B$ and $R$ be point sets (of {\em blue} and {\em red} points, respectively) in the plane, such that $P:=B\cup R$ is in general position, and $|P|$ is even. A line $\ell$ is {\em balanced} if it spans one blue and one red point, and on each open halfplane of $\ell$, the number of blue points minus the number of red points is the same. We prove that $P$ has at least $\min \{|B|,|R|\} $ balanced lines. This refines a result by Pach and Pinchasi, who proved this for the case $|B|=|R|$.

Gosset Polytopes in Picard groups of del Pezzo Surfaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this article, we research on the correspondences between the geometry of del Pezzo surfaces S_{r} and the geometry of Gosset polytopes (r-4)_{21}. We construct Gosset polytopes (r-4)_{21} in Pic S_{r}; Q whose vertices are lines, and we identify divisor classes in Pic S_{r} corresponding to (a-1)-simplexes, (r-1)-simplexes and (r-1)-crosspolytopes of the polytope (r-4)_{21}. Then we explain these classes correspond to skew a-lines, exceptional systems and rulings, respectively. As an application, we work on the monoidal transform for lines to study the local geometry of the polytope (r-4)_{21}. And we show Gieser transformation and Bertini transformation induce a symmetry of polytopes 3_{21} and 4_{21}, respectively.

Canopy of binary trees, Catalan tableaux and the asymmetric exclusion process
Published in FPSAC 2007, Formal Power Series and Algebraic Combinatorics, Tianjiin : Chine (2007) • Search Publication
The purpose of this paper is twofold. First we answer to a question asked by Steingrimsson and Williams about certain permutation tableaux: we construct a bijection between binary trees and the so-called Catalan tableaux. These tableaux are certain Ferrers (or Young) diagrams filled with some 0's and 1's, satisfying a certain hook condition, and are enumerated by the Catalan numbers. They form a subclass of the permutation tableaux, enumerated by n!, introduced by Postnikov in his study of totally non negative Grassmannians and networks. Secondly we relate this new Catalan bijection with the totally asymmetric exclusion process (TASEP), a very rich and well studied 1D gas model in statistical mechanics of nonequilibrium systems. We continue some combinatorial understanding of that model, in the spirit of works by Shapiro, Zeilberger and more recently by Brak, Essam, Rechnitzer, Corteel, Williams, Duchi and Schaeffer. Emphasis is made on the non-classical notion of canopy of a binary tree, analog of the classical up-down sequence of a permutation.

This paper describes several classical constructions of thin bases of finite order in additive number theory, and, in particular, gives a complete presentation of a beautiful construction of J. W. S. Cassels of a class of polynomially asymptotic bases. Some open problems are also discussed.

Counting substructures I: color critical graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $F$ be a graph which contains an edge whose deletion reduces its chromatic number. We prove tight bounds on the number of copies of $F$ in a graph with a prescribed number of vertices and edges. Our results extend those of Simonovits, who proved that there is one copy of $F$, and of Rademacher, Erd\H os and Lovász-Simonovits, who proved similar counting results when $F$ is a complete graph. One of the simplest cases of our theorem is the following new result. There is an absolute positive constant $c$ such that if $n$ is sufficiently large and $1 \le q < cn$, then every $n$ vertex graph with $n$ even and $n^2/4 +q$ edges contains at least $q(n/2)(n/2-1)(n/2-2)$ copies of a five cycle. Similar statements hold for any odd cycle and the bounds are best possible.

On a $\vec{C}_4$-ultrahomogeneous oriented graph
The notion of a $\mathcal C$-ultrahomogeneous graph, due to Isaksen et al., is adapted for digraphs, and subsequently a strongly connected $\vec{C}_4$-ultrahomogeneous oriented graph on 168 vertices and 126 pairwise arc-disjoint 4-cycles is presented, with regular indegree and outdegree 3 and no circuits of lengths 2 and 3, by altering a definition of the Coxeter graph via pencils of ordered lines of the Fano plane in which pencils are replaced by ordered pencils.

SQS-graphs of Solov'eva-Phelps codes
A binary extended 1-perfect code $\mathcal C$ folds over its kernel via the Steiner quadruple systems associated with its codewords. The resulting folding, proposed as a graph invariant for $\mathcal C$, distinguishes among the 361 nonlinear codes $\mathcal C$ of kernel dimension $κ$ obtained via Solov'eva-Phelps doubling construction, where $9\geqκ\geq 5$. Each of the 361 resulting graphs has most of its nonloop edges expressible in terms of lexicographically ordered quarters of products of classes from extended 1-perfect partitions of length 8 (as classified by Phelps) and loops mostly expressible in terms of the lines of the Fano plane.
Generalizations of Graham's Pebbling Conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate generalizations of pebbling numbers and of Graham's pebbling conjecture that pi(GxH) <= pi(G)pi(H), where pi(G) is the pebbling number of the graph G. We develop new machinery to attack the conjecture, which is now twenty years old. We show that certain conjectures imply others that initially appear stronger. We also find counterexamples that show that Sjostrand's theorem on cover pebbling does not apply if we allow the cost of transferring a pebble from one vertex to an adjacent vertex to depend on the edge, and we describe an alternate pebbling number for which Graham's conjecture is demonstrably false.

Avalanche polynomials
The avalanche polynomial on a graph captures the distribution of avalanches in the abelian sandpile model. Studied on trees, this polynomial could be defined by simply considering the size of the subtrees of the original tree. In this article, we study some properties of this polynomial on plane trees. Previously it has been proved that two different trees could have the same avalanche polynomial. We show here that the problem of finding a tree with a prescribed polynomial is NP-complete. In a second part, we study the average and the variance of the avalanche distribution on trees and give a closed formula.
On uniqueness of the q-state Potts model on a self-dual family of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper deals with the location of the complex zeros of the Tutte polynomial for a class of self-dual graphs. For this class of graphs, as the form of the eigenvalues is known, the regions of the complex plane can be focused on the sets where there is only one dominant eigenvalue in particular containing the positive half plane. Thus, in these regions, the analyticity of the pressure can be derived easily. Next, some examples of graphs with their Tutte polynomial having a few number of eigenvalues are given. The cases of the strip of triangles with a double edge, the wheel and the cycle with an edge having a high order of multiplicity are presented. In particular, for this last example, we remark that the well known conjecture of Chen et al. is false in the finite case.
