Combinatorial interpretations of the Jacobi-Stirling numbers

The Jacobi-Stirling numbers of the first and second kinds were introduced in 2006 in the spectral theory and are polynomial refinements of the Legendre-Stirling numbers. Andrews and Littlejohn have recently given a combinatorial interpretation for the second kind of the latter numbers. Noticing that these numbers are very similar to the classical central factorial numbers, we give combinatorial interpretations for the Jacobi-Stirling numbers of both kinds, which provide a unified treatment of the combinatorial theories for the two previous sequences and also for the Stirling numbers of both kinds.

A note on correlations in randomly oriented graphs
Given a graph $G$, we consider the model where $G$ is given a random orientation by giving each edge a random direction. It is proven that for $a,b,s\in V(G)$, the events $\{s\to a\}$ and $\{s\to b\}$ are positively correlated. This correlation persists, perhaps unexpectedly, also if we first condition on $\{s\nto t\}$ for any vertex $t\neq s$. With this conditioning it is also true that $\{s\to b\}$ and $\{a\to t\}$ are negatively correlated.
A concept of increasing events in random orientations is defined and a general inequality corresponding to Harris inequality is given.
The results are obtained by combining a very useful lemma by Colin McDiarmid which relates random orientations with edge percolation, with results by van den Berg, Häggström, Kahn on correlation inequalities for edge percolation.
The results are true also for another model of randomly directed graphs.
Bipartite graphs with five eigenvalues and pseudo designs

A pseudo $(v,\, k,\, \la)$-design is a pair $(X, {\cal B})$ where $X$ is a $v$-set and ${\cal B}=\{B_1,...,B_{v-1}\}$ is a collection of $k$-subsets (blocks) of $X$ such that each two distinct $B_i, B_j$ intersect in $\la$ elements; and $0\le\la <k \le v-1$. We use the notion of pseudo designs to characterize graphs of order $n$ whose (adjacency) spectrum contains a zero and $\pmθ$ with multiplicity $(n-3)/2$ where $0<θ\le\sqrt{2}$. Meanwhile, partial results confirming a conjecture of O. Marrero on characterization of pseudo $(v,\, k,\, \la)$-designs are obtained.

In this paper some results on the topology of the space of $k$-flats in $\mathbb R^n$ are proved, similar to the Borsuk-Ulam theorem on coverings of sphere. Some corollaries on common transversals for families of compact sets in $\mathbb R^n$, and on measure partitions by hyperplanes, are deduced.

Paths and stability number in digraphs

The Gallai-Milgram theorem says that the vertex set of any digraph with stability number k can be partitioned into k directed paths. In 1990, Hahn and Jackson conjectured that this theorem is best possible in the following strong sense. For each positive integer k, there is a digraph D with stability number k such that deleting the vertices of any k-1 directed paths in D leaves a digraph with stability number k. In this note, we prove this conjecture.

We show that the set R(w_0) of reduced expressions for the longest element in the hyperoctahedral group exhibits the cyclic sieving phenomenon. More specifically, R(w_0) possesses a natural cyclic action given by moving the first letter of a word to the end, and we show that the orbit structure of this action is encoded by the generating function for the major index on R(w_0).

We consider a planar Poisson process and its associated Voronoi map. We show that there is a proper coloring with 6 colors of the map which is a deterministic isometry-equivariant function of the Poisson process. As part of the proof we show that the 6-core of the corresponding Delaunay triangulation is empty.
Generalizations, extensions and some open questions are discussed.

Characteristic points have been a primary tool in the study of a generating function defined by a single recursive equation. We investigate the proper way to adapt this tool when working with multi-equation recursive systems.

Polynomial algorithms are given for the following two problems: given a graph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges, where $m \ge 3 n^{3/2}$, find a complete balanced bipartite subgraph with parts about $\ln n/(\ln (n^2/m))$, given a graph with $n$ vertices, find a decomposition of its edges into complete balanced bipartite graphs having altogether $O(n^2 / \ln n)$ vertices. Previous proofs of the existence of such objects, due to Kővári-Sós-Turán, Chung-Erdős-Spencer, Bublitz and Tuza were non-constructive.
Introduction to Domination Polynomial of a Graph
We introduce a domination polynomial of a graph G. The domination polynomial of a graph G of order n is the polynomial D(G, x) =\sum_{i=1}^n d(G, i)x^i, where d(G, i) is the number of dominating sets of G of size i. We obtain some properties of D(G, x) and its coefficients. Also we compute this polynomial for some specific graphs.
Projective normality of finite group quotients and EGZ theorem
In this note, we prove that for any finite dimensional vector space $V$ over $\mathbb {C}$, and for a finite cyclic group $G$, the projective variety $\mathbb P(V)/G$ is projectively normal with respect to the descent of $\mathcal O(1)^{\otimes |G|}$ by a method using toric variety, and deduce the EGZ theorem as a consequence.

In the early 1990s, Garsia and Haiman conjectured that the dimension of the Garsia-Haiman module is n!, and they showed that the resolution of this conjecture implies the Macdonald Positivity Conjecture. Haiman proved these conjectures in 2001 using algebraic geometry, but the question remains to find an explicit basis for the module which would give a simple proof of the dimension. Using the theory of Orbit Harmonics developed by Garsia and Haiman, we present a "kicking basis" for Garsia-Haiman modules indexed by a partition with at most two columns.
On a conjecture concerning vertex-transitive graphs
In this article we define a minor relation, which is stronger than the classical one, but too strong to become a well-quasi-order on the class of finite graphs. Nevertheless, with this terminology we are able to introduce a conjecture, which would imply the Lovasz conjecture and give an interesting insight on the symmetry of vertex-transitive graphs, if true. Though it could become an approach to solve the Lovasz conjecture. These ideas were first introduced by the author in his Diploma Thesis.

We derive a new estimate of the size of finite sets of points in metric spaces with few distances. The following applications are considered:
(1) we improve the Ray-Chaudhuri--Wilson bound of the size of uniform intersecting families of subsets;
(2) we refine the bound of Delsarte-Goethals-Seidel on the maximum size of spherical sets with few distances;
(3) we prove a new bound on codes with few distances in the Hamming space, improving an earlier result of Delsarte.
We also find the size of maximal binary codes and maximal constant-weight codes of small length with 2 and 3 distances.

In this paper, we study the relationship between polynomial integrals on the unitary group and the conjugacy class expansion of symmetric functions in Jucys-Murphy elements. Our main result is an explicit formula for the top coefficients in the class expansion of monomial symmetric functions in Jucys-Murphy elements, from which we recover the first order asymptotics of polynomial integrals over $\U(N)$ as $N \rightarrow \infty$. Our results on class expansion include an analogue of Macdonald's result for the top connection coefficients of the class algebra, a generalization of Stanley and Olshanski's result on the polynomiality of content statistics on Plancherel-random partitions, and an exact formula for the multiplicity of the class of full cycles in the expansion of a complete symmetric function in Jucys-Murphy elements. The latter leads to a new combinatorial interpretation of the Carlitz-Riordan central factorial numbers.

We prove a formula for the number of permutations in $S_n$ such that their first $n-k$ entries are increasing and their longest increasing subsequence has length $n-k$. This formula first appeared as a consequence of character polynomial calculations in recent work of Adriano Garsia and Alain Goupil. We give two `elementary' bijective proofs of this result and of its $q$-analogue, one proof using the RSK correspondence and one only permutations.
