The minimum size required of a solitaire army

The solitaire army is a one-person peg jumping game where a player attempts to advance an "army" of pegs as far as possible into empty territory. The game was introduced by John Conway and is also known as "Conway's Soldiers". We consider various generalizations of this game in different 2D geometries, unify them under a common mathematical framework, and find the minimum size army capable of advancing a given number of steps.

These lecture notes are based on a short course on misère quotients offered at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel, in November 2006. They include an introduction to impartial games, starting from the beginning; the basic misère quotient construction; a proof of the Guy--Smith--Plambeck Periodicity Theorem; and statements of some recent results and open problems in the subject.
Truncated Markov bases and Gröbner bases for Integer Programming
We present a new algorithm for computing a truncated Markov basis of a lattice. In general, this new algorithm is faster than existing methods. We then extend this new algorithm so that it solves the linear integer feasibility problem with promising results for equality knapsack problems. We also present a novel Groebner basis approach to solve a particular integer linear program as opposed to previous Groebner basis methods that effectively solved many different integer linear programs simultaneously. Initial results indicate that this optimisation algorithm performs better than previous Groebner basis methods.
Linear Ramsey numbers for bounded-degree hypergraphs

We show that the Ramsey number is linear for every uniform hypergraph with bounded-degree. This is a hypergraph extension of the famous theorem for ordinary graphs which Chvátal et al. showed in 1983. Our proof is simple, contains the multicolor case, and provides a strong embedding lemma. It shows the potential of a new hypergraph regularity lemma by the author.
Gleason's Theorem on Self-Dual Codes and Its Generalizations

One of the most remarkable theorems in coding theory is Gleason's 1970 theorem about the weight enumerators of self-dual codes. In the past 36 years there have been hundreds of papers written about generalizations and applications of this theorem to different types of codes, always on a case-by-case basis. In this paper I state the theorem and then describe the far-reaching generalization that Gabriele Nebe, Eric Rains and I have developed which includes all the earlier generalizations at once. The full proof has just appeared in our book "Self-Dual Codes and Invariant Theory" (Springer, 2006). This paper is based on my talk at the conference on Algebraic Combinatorics in honor of Eiichi Bannai, held in Sendai, Japan, June 26-30, 2006.

In this note we document the existence of a finitely generated rational cone that is not covered by its unimodular Hilbert subcones, but satisfies the integral Caratheodory property. We explain the algorithms that decide these properties and describe our experimental approach that led to the discovery of the examples.

We show that, if the representation group $R$ of a slim dense near hexagon $S$ is non-abelian, then $R$ is of exponent 4 and $|R|=2^β$, $1+NPdim(S)\leq β\leq 1+dimV(S)$, where $NPdim(S)$ is the near polygon embedding dimension of $S$ and $dimV(S)$ is the dimension of the universal representation module $V(S)$ of $S$. Further, if $β=1+NPdim(S)$, then $R$ is an extraspecial 2-group (Theorem 1.6).

Polynomial Graphs With Applications To Graphical Games, Extensive-Form Games, and Games With Emergent Node Tree Structures
We prove a theorem computing the number of solutions to a system of equations which is generic subject to the sparsity conditions embodied in a graph. We apply this theorem to games obeying graphical models and to extensive-form games. We define emergent-node tree structures as additional structures which normal form games may have. We apply our theorem to games having such structures. We briefly discuss how emergent node tree structures relate to cooperative games.

Often in mathematics it is useful to summarize a multivariate phenomenon with a single number and in fact, the determinant -- which is represented by det -- is one of the simplest cases. In fact, this number it is defined only for square matrices and a lot of its properties are very well-known. For instance, the determinant is a multiplicative function, i.e. det(AB)=detA detB, but it is not, in general, an additive function. Another interesting function in the matrix analysis is the characteristic polynomial -- in fact, given a matrix A, this function is defined by $p_A(t)=det(tI-A)$ where I is the identity matrix -- which elements are, up a sign, the elementary symmetric functions associated to the eigenvalues of the matrix A. In the present paper new expressions related with the determinant of sum of matrices and the elementary symmetric functions are given. Moreover, the connection with the Mobius function and the partial ordered sets (poset) is presented. Finally, a problem related with the determinant of sum of matrices is solved.

In this article, we consider the factor complexity of a fixed point of a primitive substitution canonically defined by a beta-numeration system. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition on the Renyi expansion of 1 for having an affine factor complexity map C(n), that is, such that C(n)=an+b for any integer n.

We provide a geometrical construction of the slim dense near hexagon with parameters $(s,t,t_{2})=(2,5,\{1,2\})$. Using this construction, we construct the rank 3 symplectic dual polar space $DSp(6,2)$ which is the slim dense near hexagon with parameters $(s,t,t_{2})=(2,6,2)$. Both the near hexagons are constructed from two copies of a generalized quadrangle with parameters (2,2).
Graphs (networks) with golden spectral ratio

We propose two new spectral measures for graphs and networks which characterize the ratios between the width of the "bulk" part of the spectrum and the spectral gap, as well as the ratio between spectral length and the width of the "bulk" part of the spectrum. Using these definitions we introduce the concept of golden spectral graphs (GSG), which are graphs for which both spectral ratios are identical to the golden ratio. Then, we prove several analytic results to finding the smallest GSG as well as to build families of GSGs. We also prove some non-existence results for certain classes of graphs. We explore by computer several classes of graphs and found some almost GSGs. Two networks representing real-world systems were also found to have spectral ratios very close to the golden ratio. We have shown in this work that GSG display good expansion properties, many of them are Ramanujan graphs and also are expected to have very good synchronizability. In closing golden spectral graphs are optimal networks from a topological and dynamical point of view
The Bivariate Rogers-Szegö Polynomials

We present an operator approach to deriving Mehler's formula and the Rogers formula for the bivariate Rogers-Szegö polynomials $h_n(x,y|q)$. The proof of Mehler's formula can be considered as a new approach to the nonsymmetric Poisson kernel formula for the continuous big $q$-Hermite polynomials $H_n(x;a|q)$ due to Askey, Rahman and Suslov. Mehler's formula for $h_n(x,y|q)$ involves a ${}_3φ_2$ sum and the Rogers formula involves a ${}_2φ_1$ sum. The proofs of these results are based on parameter augmentation with respect to the $q$-exponential operator and the homogeneous $q$-shift operator in two variables. By extending recent results on the Rogers-Szegö polynomials $h_n(x|q)$ due to Hou, Lascoux and Mu, we obtain another Rogers-type formula for $h_n(x,y|q)$. Finally, we give a change of base formula for $H_n(x;a|q)$ which can be used to evaluate some integrals by using the Askey-Wilson integral.

Bijections Between Multiparking Functions, Dirichlet Configurations, and Descending R-Traversals

Retracts of Posets: The Chain_gap Property and the Selection Property are Independant

Posets which are retract of products of chains are characterized by means of two properties: \emph{the chain-gap property} and \emph{the selection property} (Rival and Wille, 1981 \cite {R-W}). Examples of posets with the selection property and not the chain-gap property are easy to find. To date, the Boolean lattice $\Power (ω_1)/Fin$ was the sole example of lattice without the selection property \cite {R-W}. We prove that it does not have the chain-gap property. We provide an example of a lattice which has the chain-gap property but not the selection property. This answer questions raised in \cite {R-W}.
