For constant $r$ and arbitrary $n$, it was known that in the graph $K_r^n$ any independent set of size close to the maximum is close to some independent set of maximum size. We prove that this statement holds for arbitrary $r$ and $n$.
Sensor Network Localization, Euclidean Distance Matrix Completions, and Graph Realization

We study Semidefinite Programming, \SDPc relaxations for Sensor Network Localization, \SNLc with anchors and with noisy distance information. The main point of the paper is to view \SNL as a (nearest) Euclidean Distance Matrix, \EDM, completion problem and to show the advantages for using this latter, well studied model. We first show that the current popular \SDP relaxation is equivalent to known relaxations in the literature for \EDM completions. The existence of anchors in the problem is {\em not} special. The set of anchors simply corresponds to a given fixed clique for the graph of the \EDM problem. We next propose a method of projection when a large clique or a dense subgraph is identified in the underlying graph. This projection reduces the size, and improves the stability, of the relaxation. In addition, viewing the problem as an \EDM completion problem yields better low rank approximations for the low dimensional realizations. And, the projection/reduction procedure can be repeated for other given cliques of sensors or for sets of sensors, where many distances are known. Thus, further size reduction can be obtained. Optimality/duality conditions and a primal-dual interior-exterior path following algorithm are derived for the \SDP relaxations We discuss the relative stability and strength of two formulations and the corresponding algorithms that are used. In particular, we show that the quadratic formulation arising from the \SDP relaxation is better conditioned than the linearized form, that is used in the literature and that arises from applying a Schur complement.

We determine under which conditions certain natural models of random constraint satisfaction problems have sharp thresholds of satisfiability. These models include graph and hypergraph homomorphism, the $(d,k,t)$-model, and binary constraint satisfaction problems with domain size 3.
Decision trees and influences of variables over product probability spaces

A celebrated theorem of Friedgut says that every function $f:\{0,1\}^n \to \{0,1\}$ can be approximated by a function
$g:\{0,1\}^n \to \{0,1\}$ with $\|f-g\|_2^2 \le ε$ which depends only on $e^{O(I_f/ε)}$ variables where $I_f$ is the sum of the influences of the variables of $f$. Dinur and Friedgut later showed that this statement also holds if we replace the discrete domain $\{0,1\}^n$ with the continuous domain $[0,1]^n$, under the extra assumption that $f$ is increasing. They conjectured that the condition of monotonicity is unnecessary and can be removed.
We show that certain constant-depth decision trees provide counter-examples to Dinur-Friedgut conjecture. This suggests a reformulation of the conjecture in which the function $g:[0,1]^n \to \{0,1\}$ instead of depending on a small number of variables has a decision tree of small depth. In fact we prove this reformulation by showing that the depth of the decision tree of $g$ can be bounded by $e^{O(I_f/ε^2)}$.
Furthermore we consider a second notion of the influence of a variable, and study the functions that have bounded total influence in this sense. We use a theorem of Bourgain to show that these functions have certain properties. We also study the relation between the two different notions of influence.
A proof of Bjorner's totally nonnegative conjecture
The McMullen Correspondence gives a linear dependence between M-sequences of length |d/2|+1 and f-vectors of simplical d-polytopes. Denote the transfer matrix between g and f by M_d. Recently, Bjorner proved that any 2x2-minor of M_d is nonnegative and conjectured that the same would be true for arbitrary minors. In this paper we answer the question in the affirmative.
New 2--critical sets in the abelian 2--group
In this paper we determine a class of critical sets in the abelian {2--group} that may be obtained from a greedy algorithm. These new critical sets are all 2--critical (each entry intersects an intercalate, a trade of size 4) and completes in a top down manner.
On Negami's planar cover conjecture
Given a finite cover f:tilde{G} \to G and an embedding of tilde{G} in the plane, Negami conjectures that G embeds in P^2. Negami proved this conjecture for regular covers. In this paper we define two properties (Propserties V and E), depending on the cover tilde{G} and its embedding into S^2, and generalize Negami's result by showing: (1) If Properties V and E are fulfilled then G embeds in P^2. (2) Regular covers always fulfill Properties V and E. We give an example of an irregular cover fulfilling Properties V and E. Covers not fulfilling Properties V and E are discussed as well.
Embeddings and Ramsey numbers of sparse k-uniform hypergraphs

Chvatal, Roedl, Szemeredi and Trotter proved that the Ramsey numbers of graphs of bounded maximum degree are linear in their order. In previous work, we proved the same result for 3-uniform hypergraphs. Here we extend this result to k-uniform hypergraphs, for any integer k > 3. As in the 3-uniform case, the main new tool which we prove and use is an embedding lemma for k-uniform hypergraphs of bounded maximum degree into suitable k-uniform `quasi-random' hypergraphs.
Pattern Recognition on Oriented Matroids: Layers of Tope Committees
A tope committee K* for a simple oriented matroid M is a subset of its maximal covectors such that every positive halfspace of M contains more than half of the covectors from K*. The structures of the family of all committees for M, and of the family of its committees that contain no pairs of opposites, are described. A Farey subsequence associated with the elements of the m-th layer of the Boolean lattice of rank 2m is explored.

We prove that scaling limits of random planar maps which are uniformly distributed over the set of all rooted 2k-angulations are a.s. homeomorphic to the two-dimensional sphere. Our methods rely on the study of certain random geodesic laminations of the disk.

Our main result is a sharp bound for the number of vertices in a minimal forbidden subgraph for the graphs having minimum rank at most 3 over the finite field of order 2. We also list all 62 such minimal forbidden subgraphs. We conclude by exploring how some of these results over the finite field of order 2 extend to arbitrary fields and demonstrate that at least one third of the 62 are minimal forbidden subgraphs over an arbitrary field for the class of graphs having minimum rank at most 3 in that field.

We study Jacobian varieties for tropical curves. These are real tori equipped with integral affine structure and symmetric bilinear form. We define tropical counterpart of the theta function and establish tropical versions of the Abel-Jacobi, Riemann-Roch and Riemann theta divisor theorems.
From Fibonacci to Catalan permutations
It is well known that permutations avoiding any 3-length pattern are enumerated by the Catalan numbers. If the three patterns 123, 132 and 213 are avoided at the same time we obtain a class of permutations enumerated by the Fibonacci numbers. We start from these permutations and make one or two forbidden patterns disappear by suitably "generalizing" them. In such a way we find several classes of permutations enumerated by integer sequences which lay between the Fibonacci and Catalan numbers. For each class, we provide the generating function according to the length of the permutations. Moreover, as a result, we introduce a sort of "continuity" among the number sequences enumerating these classes of permutations.

We study the functional codes of second order defined by G. Lachaud on $\mathcal{X} \subset {\mathbb{P}}^4(\mathbb{F}_q)$ a quadric of rank($\mathcal{X}$)=3,4,5 or a non-degenerate hermitian variety. We give some bounds for %$# \mathcal{X}_{Z(\mathcal{Q})}(\mathbb{F}_{q})$, the number of points of quadratic sections of $\mathcal{X}$, which are the best possible and show that codes defined on non-degenerate quadrics are better than those defined on degenerate quadrics. We also show the geometric structure of the minimum weight codewords and estimate the second weight of these codes. For $\mathcal{X}$ a non-degenerate hermitian variety, we list the first five weights and the corresponding codewords. The paper ends with two conjectures. One on the minimum distance for the functional codes of order $h$ on $\mathcal{X} \subset {\mathbb{P}}^4(\mathbb{F}_q)$ a non-singular hermitian variety. The second conjecture on the distribution of the codewords of the first five weights of the functional codes of second order on $\mathcal{X} \subset {\mathbb{P}}^N(\mathbb{F}_q)$ the non-singular hermitian variety.

We give a new version of the fusion procedure for the symmetric group which originated in the work of Jucys and was developed by Cherednik. We derive it from the Jucys-Murphy formulas for the diagonal matrix units for the symmetric group.
Noncrossing partitions and representations of quivers

We situate the noncrossing partitions associated to a finite Coxeter group within the context of the representation theory of quivers. We describe Reading's bijection between noncrossing partitions and clusters in this context, and show that it extends to the extended Dynkin case. Our setup also yields a new proof that the noncrossing partitions associated to a finite Coxeter group form a lattice.
We also prove some new results within the theory of quiver representations. We show that the finitely generated, exact abelian, and extension-closed subcategories of the representations of a quiver $Q$ without oriented cycles are in natural bijection with the cluster-tilting objects in the associated cluster category. We also show these subcategories are exactly the finitely generated categories that can be obtained as the semistable objects with respect to some stability condition.

Using an algorithm for computing the symmetric function Kronecker product of D-finite symmetric functions we find some new Kronecker product identities. The identities give closed form formulas for trace-like values of the Kronecker product.
Excedance number for involutions in complex reflection groups
We define the excedance number on the complex reflection groups and compute its multidistribution with the number of fixed points on the set of involutions in these groups. We use some recurrence formulas and generating functions manipulations to obtain our results.

Parity-Alternate Permutations and Signed Eulerian Numbers

In order to study signed Eulerian numbers, we introduce permutations of a particular type, called parity-alternate permutations, because they take even and odd entries alternately. The objective of this paper is twofold. The first is to derive several properties of those permutations, by subdividing them into even and odd ones. The second is to discuss relationships between those and signed Eulerian numbers. Divisibility properties by prime powers are also deduced for signed Eulerian numbers and several related numbers.
