Temperley-Lieb pfaffinants and Schur $Q$-positivity conjectures
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study pfaffian analogues of immanants, which we call pfaffinants. Our main object is the TL-pfaffinants which are analogues of Rhoades and Skandera's TL-immanants. We show that TL-pfaffinants are positive when applied to planar networks and explain how to decompose products of complementary pfaffians in terms of TL-pfaffinants. We conjecture in addition that TL-pfaffinants have positivity properties related to Schur Q-functions.

Probabilistic Inductive Classes of Graphs
Published in Journal of Mathematical Sociology 32: 85-109, 2008 • View PublicationBIB
Models of complex networks are generally defined as graph stochastic processes in which edges and vertices are added or deleted over time to simulate the evolution of networks. Here, we define a unifying framework - probabilistic inductive classes of graphs - for formalizing and studying evolution of complex networks. Our definition of probabilistic inductive class of graphs (PICG) extends the standard notion of inductive class of graphs (ICG) by imposing a probability space. A PICG is given by: (1) class B of initial graphs, the basis of PICG, (2) class R of generating rules, each with distinguished left element to which the rule is applied to obtain the right element, (3) probability distribution specifying how the initial graph is chosen from class B, (4) probability distribution specifying how the rules from class R are applied, and, finally, (5) probability distribution specifying how the left elements for every rule in class R are chosen. We point out that many of the existing models of growing networks can be cast as PICGs. We present how the well known model of growing networks - the preferential attachment model - can be studied as PICG. As an illustration we present results regarding the size, order, and degree sequence for PICG models of connected and 2-connected graphs.

Spanning Forests and the Golden Ratio
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics 156 (2008) 813-821 • View PublicationBIB
For a graph G, let f_{ij} be the number of spanning rooted forests in which vertex j belongs to a tree rooted at i. In this paper, we show that for a path, the f_{ij}'s can be expressed as the products of Fibonacci numbers; for a cycle, they are products of Fibonacci and Lucas numbers. The {\em doubly stochastic graph matrix} is the matrix F=(f_{ij})/f, where f is the total number of spanning rooted forests of G and n is the number of vertices in G. F provides a proximity measure for graph vertices. By the matrix forest theorem, F^{-1}=I+L, where L is the Laplacian matrix of G. We show that for the paths and the so-called T-caterpillars, some diagonal entries of F (which provides a measure of the self-connectivity of vertices) converge to φ^{-1} or to 1-φ^{-1}, where φis the golden ratio, as the number of vertices goes to infinity. Thereby, in the asymptotic, the corresponding vertices can be metaphorically considered as "golden introverts" and "golden extroverts," respectively. This metaphor is reinforced by a Markov chain interpretation of the doubly stochastic graph matrix, according to which F equals the overall transition matrix of a random walk with a random number of steps on G.

Lattice convex chains in the plane
A detailed combinatorial analysis of planar lattice convex polygonal lines is presented. This makes it possible to answer an open question of Vershik regarding the existence of a limit shape when the number of vertices is constrained. The method which is used emphasizes the connection of the combinatorial analysis with the zeros of the zeta function. It is shown how the Riemann Hypothesis leads to an asymptotic equivalent of the number of convex chains.

Hamilton cycles in highly connected and expanding graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we prove a sufficient condition for the existence of a Hamilton cycle, which is applicable to a wide variety of graphs, including relatively sparse graphs. In contrast to previous criteria, ours is based on only two properties: one requiring expansion of ``small'' sets, the other ensuring the existence of an edge between any two disjoint ``large'' sets. We also discuss applications in positional games, random graphs and extremal graph theory.

The Euler multiplicity and addition-deletion theorems for multiarrangements
Published in J. London Math. Soc. (2) 77 (2008), 335-348 • View PublicationBIB
The addition-deletion theorems for hyperplane arrangements, which were originally shown in [H. Terao, Arrangements of hyperplanes and their freeness I, II. J. Fac. Sci. Univ. Tokyo Sect. IA Math. 27 (1980), 293--320], provide useful ways to construct examples of free arrangements. In this article, we prove addition-deletion theorems for multiarrangements. A key to the generalization is the definition of a new multiplicity, called the Euler multiplicity, of a restricted multiarrangement. We compute the Euler multiplicities in many cases. Then we apply the addition-deletion theorems to various arrangements including supersolvable arrangements and the Coxeter arrangement of type $A_{3}$ to construct free and non-free multiarrangements.

The Cyclic Sieving Phenomenon for Faces of Generalized Cluster Complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
The notion of cyclic sieving phenomenon is introduced by Reiner, Stanton, and White as a generalization of Stembridge's $q=-1$ phenomenon. The generalized cluster complexes associated to root systems are given by Fomin and Reading as a generalization of the cluster complexes found by Fomin and Zelevinsky. In this paper, the faces of various dimensions of the generalized cluster complexes in type $A_n$, $B_n$, $D_n$, and $I_2(a)$ are shown to exhibit the cyclic sieving phenomenon under a cyclic group action. For the cluster complexes of exceptional type $E_6$, $E_7$, $E_8$, $F_4$, $H_3$, and $H_4$, a verification for such a phenomenon on their maximal faces is given.

Cubical token systems
Published • View PublicationBIB
The paper deals with combinatorial and stochastic structures of cubical token systems. A cubical token system is an instance of a token system, which in turn is an instance of a transition system. It is shown that some basic results of combinatorial and stochastic parts of media theory hold almost in identical form for cubical token systems, although some underlying concepts are quite different. A representation theorem for a cubical token system is established asserting that the graph of such a system is cubical.

The Colin de Verdière Graph Parameter for Threshold Graphs
We consider Schrödinger operators on threshold graphs and prove a formula for the Colin de Verdière parameter in terms of the building sequence. We construct an optimal Colin de Verdière matrix for each connected threshold graph $G$ of $n$ vertices. For a large subclass of threshold graphs we construct an alternative Colin de Verdière matrix depending on a large parameter. As a corollary to this last construction, we give estimates on the size of the non-zero eigenvalues of this matrix.

On canonical modules of toric face rings
Published in Nagoya Math. J. 194 (2009), 69-90 • View PublicationBIB
Generalizing the concepts of Stanley-Reisner and affine monoid algebras, one can associate to a rational pointed fan the toric face ring. Assuming that this ring is Cohen-Macaulay, the main result of this paper is to characterize the situation when its canonical module is isomorphic to a fine graded ideal of the toric face ring. From this result several algebraic and combinatorial consequences are deduced in the situations where the fan may be related to a manifold with non-empty boundary, or the fan is a shellable fan.

Removal lemma for infinitely-many forbidden hypergraphs and property testing
We give an extension of a graph result by Alon and Shapira. And it affirmatively settles a question on property testing raised by them. All monotone hypergraph properties and all hereditary partite hypergraph properties are testable. Our proof is constructive and based on a new hypergraph regularity lemma.

Exact solution of close-packed dimers on the kagome lattice
Published in Phys. Rev. E 75, 040105R (2007) • View PublicationBIB
It is well-known that exact enumerations of close-packed dimers can be carried out for two-dimensional lattices. While details of results are now known for most lattices, due to the unique nature of the lattice structure, there has been no complete analysis for the kagome lattice. Here we derive the close-form expression $(1/3) \ln (4 x y z)$ for the free energy of close-packed dimers on the kagome lattice, where $x,y,z$ are dimer weights. We use two different approaches, the Kasteleyn method of evaluating a Pfaffian and an alternative vertex model formulation. Both methods lead to the same final expression. The correlation function between two dimers at a distance equal or greater than two lattice spacings is found to vanish identically.

Pseudo-Triangulations - a Survey
Published in In: Surveys on Discrete and Computational Geometry-Twenty Years Later. Herausgeber: Jacob E. Goodman, János Pach und Richard Pollack, Contemporary Mathematics, Band 453, American Mathematical Society, 2008, pp. 343-410 • View PublicationBIB
A pseudo-triangle is a simple polygon with three convex vertices, and a pseudo-triangulation is a face-to-face tiling of a planar region into pseudo-triangles. Pseudo-triangulations appear as data structures in computational geometry, as planar bar-and-joint frameworks in rigidity theory and as projections of locally convex surfaces. This survey of current literature includes combinatorial properties and counting of special classes, rigidity theoretical results, representations as polytopes, straight-line drawings from abstract versions called combinatorial pseudo-triangulations, algorithms and applications of pseudo-triangulations.
