Random cubic graphs are not homomorphic to the cycle of size 7
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 93(2) (2005) pp. 319-325 • View PublicationBIB
We prove that a random cubic graph almost surely is not homomorphic to a cycle of size 7. This implies that there exist cubic graphs of arbitrarily high girth with no homomorphisms to the cycle of size 7.

A lower bound for the size of the largest critical sets in Latin squares
Published in Bulletin of the Institute of Combinatorics and its Applications (Canada). 38 (2003) pp.19-22 • Search Publication
A critical set in an $n \times n$ array is a set $C$ of given entries, such that there exists a unique extension of $C$ to an $n\times n$ Latin square and no proper subset of $C$ has this property. The cardinality of the largest critical set in any Latin square of order $n$ is denoted by $\lcs{n}$. We give a lower bound for $\lcs{n}$ by showing that $\lcs{n} \geq n^2(1-\frac{2 + \ln 2}{\ln n})+n(1+\frac {\ln (8 π)} {\ln n})-\frac{\ln 2}{\ln n}.$
On the size of the minimum critical set of a Latin square
Published in Journal of Discrete Mathematics. 293(1-3) (2005) pp. 121-127 • View PublicationBIB
A critical set in an $n \times n$ array is a set $C$ of given entries, such that there exists a unique extension of $C$ to an $n\times n$ Latin square and no proper subset of $C$ has this property. For a Latin square $L$, $\scs{L}$ denotes the size of the smallest critical set of $L$, and $\scs{n}$ is the minimum of $\scs{L}$ over all Latin squares $L$ of order $n$. We find an upper bound for the number of partial Latin squares of size $k$ and prove that $$n^2-(e+o(1))n^{10/6} \le \max \scs{L} \le n^2-\frac{\sqrtπ}{2}n^{9/6}.$$ % This improves a result of N. Cavenagh (Ph.D. thesis, The University of Queensland, 2003) and disproves one of his conjectures. Also it improves the previously known lower bound for the size of the largest critical set of any Latin square of order $n$.
Circular chromatic index of graphs of maximum degree 3
Published in Journal of Graph Theory. 49(4) (2005) pp. 325-335 • View PublicationBIB
This paper proves that if $G$ is a graph (parallel edges allowed) of maximum degree 3, then $χ_c'(G) \leq 11/3$ provided that $G$ does not contain $H_1$ or $H_2$ as a subgraph, where $H_1$ and $H_2$ are obtained by subdividing one edge of $K_2^3$ (the graph with three parallel edges between two vertices) and $K_4$, respectively. As $χ_c'(H_1) = χ_c'(H_2) = 4$, our result implies that there is no graph $G$ with $11/3 < χ_c'(G) < 4$. It also implies that if $G$ is a 2-edge connected cubic graph, then $χ'(G) \le 11/3$.

Perfect dominating sets in the Cartesian products of prime cycles
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 14(1), (2007), N8 • View PublicationBIB
We study the structure of a minimum dominating set of $C_{2n+1}^n$, the Cartesian product of $n$ copies of the cycle of size $2n+1$, where $2n+1$ is a prime.

On Potentially $(K_5-C_4)$-graphic Sequences
In this paper, we characterize the potentially $(K_5-C_4)$-graphic sequences where $K_5-C_4$ is the graph obtained from $K_5$ by removing four edges of a 4 cycle $C_4$. This characterization implies a theorem due to Lai [6].
Rota-Baxter algebras and new combinatorial identities
Published in Letters in Mathematical Physics 81 (2007) 61-75 • View PublicationBIB
The word problem for an arbitrary associative Rota-Baxter algebra is solved. This leads to a noncommutative generalization of the classical Spitzer identities. Links to other combinatorial aspects, particularly of interest in physics, are indicated.

Counting descents, rises, and levels, with prescribed first element, in words
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently, Kitaev and Remmel [Classifying descents according to parity, Annals of Combinatorics, to appear 2007] refined the well-known permutation statistic ``descent'' by fixing parity of one of the descent's numbers. Results in that paper were extended and generalized in several ways. In this paper, we shall fix a set partition of the natural numbers $N$, $(N_1, ..., N_t)$, and we study the distribution of descents, levels, and rises according to whether the first letter of the descent, rise, or level lies in $N_i$ over the set of words over the alphabet $[k]$. In particular, we refine and generalize some of the results in [Counting occurrences of some subword patterns, Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science 6 (2003), 001-012.].

John-type theorems for generalized arithmetic progressions and iterated sumsets
Published • View PublicationBIB
A classical theorem of Fritz John allows one to describe a convex body, up to constants, as an ellipsoid. In this article we establish similar descriptions for generalized (i.e. multidimensional) arithmetic progressions in terms of proper (i.e. collision-free) generalized arithmetic progressions, in both torsion-free and torsion settings. We also obtain a similar characterization of iterated sumsets in arbitrary abelian groups in terms of progressions, thus strengthening and extending recent results of Szemerédi and Vu.

Statistics on the multi-colored permutation groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define an excedance number for the multi-colored permutation group, i.e. the wreath product of Z_{r_1} x ... x Z_{r_k} with S_n, and calculate its multi-distribution with some natural parameters. We also compute the multi-distribution of the parameters exc(pi) and fix(pi) over the sets of involutions in the multi-colored permutation group. Using this, we count the number of involutions in this group having a fixed number of excedances and absolute fixed points.

A combinatorial proof of a Weyl type formula for hook Schur polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we present a simple combinatorial proof of a Weyl type formula for hook Schur polynomials, which has been obtained by using a Kostant type cohomology formula for $\frak{gl}_{m|n}$. In general, we can obtain in a combinatorial way a Weyl type formula for various highest weight representations of a Lie superalgebra, which together with a general linear algebra forms a Howe dual pair.

Spanning forests on the Sierpinski gasket
Published in Discret. Math. Theor. Comput. Sci. 10, 55-76 (2008) • View PublicationBIB
We present the numbers of spanning forests on the Sierpinski gasket $SG_d(n)$ at stage $n$ with dimension $d$ equal to two, three and four, and determine the asymptotic behaviors. The corresponding results on the generalized Sierpinski gasket $SG_{d,b}(n)$ with $d=2$ and $b=3,4$ are obtained. We also derive the upper bounds of the asymptotic growth constants for both $SG_d$ and $SG_{2,b}$.

Isonemal prefabrics with only parallel axes of symmetry
Published in Discrete Mathematics 309 (2009), 2696--2711 • View PublicationBIB
Isonemal weaving designs, introduced into mathematical literature by Grünbaum and Shephard, were classified into thirty-nine infinite sets and a small number of exceptions by Richard Roth. This paper refines Roth's taxonomy for the first ten of these families in order to solve three problems, which designs exist in various sizes, which prefabrics can be doubled and remain isonemal, and which can be halved and remain isonemal.

Jacobian varieties of reduced tropical curves
On tropical geometry in $\rr^2$, the divisor and the Jacobian variety are defined in analogy to algebraic geometry. For study of these objects, it is important to think of the `bunch' of a tropical curve. In this paper, we will show that if the bunch is a bouquet, then the Jacobian is a higher-dimensional torus.

A note on univoque self-Sturmian numbers
Published in RAIRO Info. Théor. Appl. 42 (2008) 659-662 • View PublicationBIB
We compare two sets of (infinite) binary sequences whose suffixes satisfy extremal conditions: one occurs when studying iterations of a unimodal continuous map from the unit interval into itself, but it also characterizes univoque real numbers; the other is an equivalent definition of characteristic Sturmian sequences. As a corollary to our study we obtain that a real number $β$ in $(1,2)$ is univoque and self-Sturmian if and only if the $β$-expansion of 1 is of the form $1v$, where $v$ is a characteristic Sturmian sequence beginning itself in 1.

On the number of Birch partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Birch and Tverberg partitions are closely related concepts from discrete geometry. We show two properties for the number of Birch partitions: Evenness, and a lower bound. This implies the first non-trivial lower bound for the number of Tverberg partitions that holds for arbitrary q, where q is the number of partition blocks. The proofs are based on direct arguments, and do not use the equivariant method from topological combinatorics.

Asymptotic normality of the $k$-core in random graphs
Published in Annals of Applied Probability 2008, Vol. 18, No. 3, 1085-1137 • View PublicationBIB
We study the $k$-core of a random (multi)graph on $n$ vertices with a given degree sequence. In our previous paper [Random Structures Algorithms 30 (2007) 50--62] we used properties of empirical distributions of independent random variables to give a simple proof of the fact that the size of the giant $k$-core obeys a law of large numbers as ${n\to \infty}$. Here we develop the method further and show that the fluctuations around the deterministic limit converge to a Gaussian law above and near the threshold, and to a non-normal law at the threshold. Further, we determine precisely the location of the phase transition window for the emergence of a giant $k$-core. Hence, we deduce corresponding results for the $k$-core in $G(n,p)$ and $G(n,m)$.

Non symmetric Cauchy kernels for the classical Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give non-symmetric versions of the Cauchy kernel and Littlewood's kernels, corresponding to the types $A_n$, $B_n$, $C_n$ and $D_n$, of the classical groups. We show that these new kernels are diagonal in the basis of two families of key polynomials (one of them being Demazure characters) obtained as images of dominant monomials under isobaric divided differences. We define scalar products such that the two families of key polynomials are adjoint to each other.

A Simple Regularization of Hypergraphs
We give a simple and natural (probabilistic) construction of hypergraph regularization. It is done just by taking a constant-bounded number of random vertex samplings only one time (thus, iteration-free). It is independent from the definition of quasi-randomness and yields a new elementary proof of a strong hypergraph regularity lemma. Consequently, as an example of its applications, we have a new self-contained proof of Szemerédi's classic theorem on arithmetic progressions (1975) as well as its multidimensional extension by Furstenberg-Katznelson (1978).
