Gelfand-Graev characters and their degenerate counterparts have an important role in the representation theory of finite groups of Lie type. Using a characteristic map to translate the character theory of the finite unitary groups into the language of symmetric functions, we study degenerate Gelfand-Graev characters of the finite unitary group from a combinatorial point of view. In particular, we give the values of Gelfand-Graev characters at arbitrary elements, recover the decomposition multiplicities of degenerate Gelfand-Graev characters in terms of tableau combinatorics, and conclude with some multiplicity consequences.

Henriques and Kamnitzer defined and studied a commutor for the category of crystals of a finite dimentional complex reductive Lie algebra. We show that the action of this commutor on highest weight elements can be expressed very simply using Kashiwara's involution on the Verma crystal.

In 1998 Manickam and Singhi conjectured that for every positive integer $d$ and every $n \ge 4d$, every set of $n$ real numbers whose sum is nonnegative contains at least $\binom {n-1}{d-1}$ subsets of size $d$ whose sums are nonnegative. In this paper we establish new results related to this conjecture. We also prove that the conjecture of Manickam and Singhi does not hold for $n=2d+2$.

Let G be any additive abelian group with cyclic torsion subgroup, and let A, B and C be finite subsets of G with cardinality n>0. We show that there is a numbering {a_i}_{i=1}^n of the elements of A, a numbering {b_i}_{i=1}^n of the elements of B and a numbering {c_i}_{i=1}^n of the elements of C, such that all the sums a_i+b_i+c_i (i=1,...,n) are distinct. Consequently, each subcube of the Latin cube formed by the Cayley addition table of Z/NZ contains a Latin transversal. This additive theorem can be further extended via restricted sumsets in a field.
The Hopf algebras of type B quasisymmetric functions and peak functions
We show that with the appropriate choice of coproduct, the type B quasisymmetric functions form a Hopf algebra, and the recently introduced type B peak functions form a Hopf subalgebra.

The colored quasisymmetric functions, like the classic quasisymmetric functions, are known to form a Hopf algebra with a natural peak subalgebra. We show how these algebras arise as the image of the algebra of colored posets. To effect this approach we introduce colored analogs of $P$-partitions and enriched $P$-partitions. We also frame our results in terms of Aguiar, Bergeron, and Sottile's theory of combinatorial Hopf algebras and its colored analog.
Canonical equivalence relations on nets of $PS_{c_0}$
We give a list of canonical equivalence relations on discrete nets of the positive unit sphere of $c_0$. This generalizes results of W. T. Gowers and A. D. Taylor.

Given two graphs $G$ and $H$, let $f(G,H)$ denote the maximum number $c$ for which there is a way to color the edges of $G$ with $c$ colors such that every subgraph $H$ of $G$ has at least two edges of the same color. Equivalently, any edge-coloring of $G$ with at least $rb(G,H)=f(G,H)+1$ colors contains a rainbow copy of $H$, where a rainbow subgraph of an edge-colored graph is such that no two edges of it have the same color. The number $rb(G,H)$ is called the {\it rainbow number of $H$ with respect to $G$}, and simply called the {\it bipartite rainbow number of $H$} if $G$ is the complete bipartite graph $K_{m,n}$. Erdős, Simonovits and Sós showed that $rb(K_n,K_3)=n$. In 2004, Schiermeyer determined the rainbow numbers $rb(K_n,K_k)$ for all $n\geq k\geq 4$, and the rainbow numbers $rb(K_n,kK_2)$ for all $k\geq 2$ and $n\geq 3k+3$. In this paper we will determine the rainbow numbers $rb(K_{m,n},kK_2)$ for all $k\geq 1$.
Stochastic Models for Speciation Events in Phylogenetic trees
In a phylogenetic tree, we often don't have information about the time a speciation event (inner node) occured. Under a neutral model for speciation, I develop fast algorithms for calculating the probability that an inner node i is the k-th speciation event. For the Yule and the coalescent model, I develop an edge length estimation as well. Various properties of the Yule model are discussed throughout the thesis.
Faultfree Tromino Tilings of Rectangles
In this paper we consider faultfree tromino tilings of rectangles and characterize rectangles that admit such tilings. We introduce the notion of {\it crossing numbers} for tilings and derive bounds on the crossing numbers of faultfree tilings. We develop an iterative scheme for generating faultfree tromino tilings for rectangles and derive the closed form expression for the exact number of faultfree tromino tilings for $4\times3t$ rectangles and the exact generating function for $5\times 3t$ rectangles, $t\geq 1$. Our iterative scheme generalizes to arbitrary rectangles; for $6\times 6t$ and $7\times 6t$ rectangles, $t\geq 1$, we derive generating functions for estimating lower bounds on the number of faultfree tilings. We also derive an upper bound on the number of tromino tilings of an $m\times n$ rectangle, where $3|mn$ and $m,n>0$.

We present a simplified version of the DFS-based Left-Right planarity testing and embedding algorithm implemented in Pigale which has been considered as the fastest implemented one [J.M. Boyer, P.F. Cortese, M. Patrignani, and G. Di Battista. Stop minding your P's and Q's: implementing fast and simple DFS-based planarity and embedding algorithm. In Graph Drawing, volume 2912 of Lecture Notes in Computer Science, pages 25-36. Springer, 2004.]. We give here a simple full justification of the algorithm, based on a preliminary extended study of topological properties of DFS trees.
Sierpinski's triangle and the Prouhet-Thue-Morse word
Sierpinski's triangle is a fractal and the Prouhet-Thue-Morse word is sufficiently chaotic to avoid cubes. Here we observe that there is at least a tenuous connection between them: the Sierpinski triangle is evident in Pascal's triangle mod 2 whose inverse, as an infinite lower-triangular matrix, involves the Prouhet-Thue-Morse word.

On Gale and braxial polytopes

Cyclic polytopes are characterized as simplicial polytopes satisfying Gale's evenness condition (a combinatorial condition on facets relative to a fixed ordering of the vertices). Periodically-cyclic polytopes are polytopes for which certain subpolytopes are cyclic. Bisztriczky discovered a class of periodically-cyclic polytopes that also satisfy Gale's evenness condition. The faces of these polytopes are braxtopes, a certain class of nonsimplicial polytopes studied by the authors. In this paper we prove that the periodically-cyclic Gale polytopes of Bisztriczky are exactly the polytopes that satisfy Gale's evenness condition and are braxial (all faces are braxtopes). The existence of other periodically-cyclic Gale polytopes is open.

We prove that if a simplicial complex is shellable, then the intersection lattice for the corresponding diagonal arrangement is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres. Furthermore, we describe precisely the spheres in the wedge, based on the data of shelling. Also, we give some examples of diagonal arrangements where the complement is K(π,1), coming from rank 3 matroids.

Let G be an additive abelian group whose finite subgroups are all cyclic. Let A_1,...,A_n (n>1) be finite subsets of G with cardinality k>0, and let b_1,...,b_n be pairwise distinct elements of G with odd order. We show that for every positive integer m\leq (k-1)/(n-1) there are more than (k-1)n-(m+1)n(n-1)/2 sets {a_1,...,a_n} such that a_1\in A_1,..., a_n\in A_n, and both a_i\not=a_j and ma_i+b_i\not=ma_j+b_j (or both ma_i\not=ma_j and a_i+b_i\not=a_j+b_j) for all 1\leq i<j\leq n.
This extends a recent result of Dasgupta, Károlyi, Serra and
Szegedy on Snevily's conjecture. Actually stronger results on sumsets with polynomial restrictions are obtained in this paper.

Via a computer search, Altshuler and Steinberg found that there are 1296 +1 combinatorial 3-manifolds on nine vertices, of which only one is non-sphere. This exceptional 3-manifold $K^{3}_{9}$ triangulates the twisted $S^{2}$-bundle over $S^{1}$. It was first constructed by Walkup. In this paper, we present a computer-free proof of the uniqueness of this non-sphere combinatorial 3-manifold. As opposed to the computer-generated proof, ours does not require wading through all the 9-vertex 3-spheres. As a preliminary result, we also show that any 9-vertex combinatorial 3-manifold is equivalent by proper bistellar moves to a 9-vertex neighbourly 3-manifold.
Minimal triangulations of sphere bundles over the circle

For integers $d \geq 2$ and $ε= 0$ or 1, let $S^{1, d - 1}(ε)$ denote the sphere product $S^{1} \times S^{d - 1}$ if $ε= 0$ and the twisted $S^{d - 1}$ bundle over $S^{1}$ if $ε= 1$. The main results of this paper are: (a) if $d \equiv ε$ (mod 2) then $S^{1, d - 1}(ε)$ has a unique minimal triangulation using $2d + 3$ vertices, and (b) if $d \equiv 1 - ε$ (mod 2) then $S^{1, d - 1}(ε)$ has minimal triangulations (not unique) using $2d + 4$ vertices. The second result confirms a recent conjecture of Lutz. The first result provides the first known infinite family of closed manifolds (other than spheres) for which the minimal triangulation is unique. Actually, we show that while $S^{1, d - 1}(ε)$ has at most one $(2d + 3)$-vertex triangulation (one if $d \equiv ε$ (mod 2), zero otherwise), in sharp contrast, the number of non-isomorphic $(2d + 4)$-vertex triangulations of these $d$-manifolds grows exponentially with $d$ for either choice of $ε$. The result in (a), as well as the minimality part in (b), is a consequence of the following result: (c) for $d \geq 3$, there is a unique $(2d + 3)$-vertex simplicial complex which triangulates a non-simply connected closed manifold of dimension $d$. This amazing simplicial complex was first constructed by Kühnel in 1986. Generalizing a 1987 result of Brehm and Kühnel, we prove that (d) any triangulation of a non-simply connected closed $d$-manifold requires at least $2d + 3$ vertices. The result (c) completely describes the case of equality in (d). The proofs rest on the Lower Bound Theorem for normal pseudomanifolds and on a combinatorial version of Alexander duality.
