Let $p$ be a prime, and let $f(x)$ be an integer-valued polynomial. By a combinatorial approach, we obtain a nontrivial lower bound of the $p$-adic order of the sum $$\sum_{k=r(mod p^β)}\binom{n}{k}(-1)^k f([(k-r)/p^α]),$$ where $α\geβ\ge 0$, $n\ge p^{α-1}$ and $r\in Z$. This polynomial extension of Fleck's congruence has various backgrounds and several consequences such as $$\sum_{k=r(mod p^α)}\binom{n}{k} a^k\equiv 0 (mod p^{[(n-p^{α-1})/φ(p^α)]})$$ provided that $α>1$ and $a\equiv-1(mod p)$.

We derive asymptotic formulas for the Lyapunov exponent of almost all monotone Boolean networks. The formulas are different depending on whether the number of variables of the constituent Boolean functions, or equivalently, the connectivity of the Boolean network, is even or odd.

We construct triangular hyperbolic polyhedra whose links are generalized 4-gons. The universal cover of those polyhedra are hyperbolic buildings, which appartments are hyperbolic planes tesselated by regular triangles with angles $π/4$. Moreover, the fundamental groups of the polyhedra acts simply transitively on vertices of the buildings.

To any weighted graph of first Betti number b is naturally associated a lattice of dimension b, definite in a similar way that the jacobian for a Riemann surface. This class of lattices generated by graphs is particularly interesting. We show here an upperbound of the Hermite invariant of such a lattice according to b whose order is ln b. This order is optimal : it is realized by the Hermite invariant of the jacobian of a systolicly economic graph.
A proof of the polycirculant conjecture
This paper presents a solution of the polycirculant conjecture which states that every vertex-transitive graph G has an automorphism that permutes the vertices in cycles of the same length. This is done by identifying vertex-transitive graphs as coset graphs. For a coset graph H, an equivalence relation $\sim$ is defined on the vertices of cosets with classes as double cosets of the stabiliser and any other proper subgroup A' of a transitive group A of G. Induced left translations of elements of the subgroup A' are semi-regular since they preserve these double cosets and acts regularly on each of them. The coset graph is equivalent to G by a theorem of Sabidussi.
A note on the existence of {k, k}-equivelar polyhedral maps
A polyhedral map is called $\{p, q\}$-equivelar if each face has $p$ edges and each vertex belongs to $q$ faces. In 1983, it was shown that there exist infinitely many geometrically realizable $\{p, q\}$-equivelar polyhedral maps if $q > p = 4$, $p > q = 4$ or $q - 3 > p = 3$. It was shown in 2001 that there exist infinitely many $\{4, 4\}$- and $\{3, 6\}$-equivelar polyhedral maps. In 1990, it was shown that $\{5, 5\}$- and $\{6, 6\}$-equivelar polyhedral maps exist. In this note, examples are constructed, to show that infinitely many self dual $\{k, k\}$-equivelar polyhedral maps exist for each $k \geq 5$. Also vertex-minimal non-singular $\{p, p\}$-pattern are constructed for all odd primes $p$.

An infinite sequence of 0's and 1's evolves by flipping each~1 to a~0 exponentially at rate one. When a~1 flips, all bits to its right also flip. Starting from any configuration with finitely many 1's to the left of the origin, we show that the leftmost~1 moves right with linear speed. Upper and lower bounds are given on the speed.

Replacing the usual notion of quotient sets by the notion of orbiquotient sets we obtain a generalization of Pólya theory. The key ingredient of our extended theory is the definition of the orbicycle index polynomial which we compute in several examples. We apply our theory to the study of orbicycles on orbiquotient sets.

The cotangent space at a monomial ideal of the Hilbert scheme of points of an affine space
Let k be an algebraically closed field. We study the cotangent space of a point t corresponding to a monomial ideal I of k[x_1, ..., x_r] in the Hilbert scheme of n points of affine r-space (so the k-dimension of k[x_1, ..., x_r]/I = colength of I = n). Since t lies in the closure of the locus corresponding to subschemes supported at n distinct points of A^r_k, one knows that the k-dimension of the cotangent space is always >= r*n, and that t is nonsingular if and only if the dimension equals r*n. We construct an explicit linearly independent set S of cotangent vectors of size r*n, and then explore conditions on I under which S either is or is not a basis of the cotangent space. In particular, we give a condition on I sufficient for S to be a basis (equivalently, for t to be nonsingular) that holds for every monomial ideal in the case of r = 2 variables, and that characterizes such ideals when r = 3. We also give an easily-checked condition on I sufficient for S not to be a basis.

Let $M$ be an $n$-vertex combinatorial triangulation of a $\ZZ_2$-homology $d$-sphere. In this paper we prove that if $n \leq d + 8$ then $M$ must be a combinatorial sphere. Further, if $n = d + 9$ and $M$ is not a combinatorial sphere then $M$ can not admit any proper bistellar move. Existence of a 12-vertex triangulation of the lens space $L(3, 1)$ shows that the first result is sharp in dimension three.
In the course of the proof we also show that any $\ZZ_2$-acyclic simplicial complex on $\leq 7$ vertices is necessarily collapsible. This result is best possible since there exist 8-vertex triangulations of the Dunce Hat which are not collapsible.
Edit Distance between Unlabeled Ordered Trees

There exists a bijection between one stack sortable permutations --permutations which avoid the pattern 231-- and planar trees. We define an edit distance between permutations which is coherent with the standard edit distance between trees. This one-to-one correspondence yields a polynomial algorithm for the subpermutation problem for $(231)$ avoiding permutations. Moreover, we obtain the generating function of the edit distance between ordered trees and some special ones. For the general case we show that the mean edit distance between a planar tree and all other planar trees is at least $n/ln(n)$. Some results can be extended to labeled trees considering colored Dyck paths or equivalently colored one stack sortable permutations.

We investigate the integrability of the discrete non-linear equation governing the dependence on geodesic distance of planar graphs with inner vertices of even valences. This equation follows from a bijection between graphs and blossom trees and is expressed in terms of generating functions for random walks. We construct explicitly an infinite set of conserved quantities for this equation, also involving suitable combinations of random walk generating functions. The proof of their conservation, i.e. their eventual independence on the geodesic distance, relies on the connection between random walks and heaps of dimers. The values of the conserved quantities are identified with generating functions for graphs with fixed numbers of external legs. Alternative equivalent choices for the set of conserved quantities are also discussed and some applications are presented.
Geodesic Distance in Planar Graphs: An Integrable Approach

We discuss the enumeration of planar graphs using bijections with suitably decorated trees, which allow for keeping track of the geodesic distances between faces of the graph. The corresponding generating functions obey non-linear recursion relations on the geodesic distance. These are solved by use of stationary multi-soliton tau-functions of suitable reductions of the KP hierarchy. We obtain a unified formulation of the (multi-) critical continuum limit describing large graphs with marked points at large geodesic distances, and obtain integrable differential equations for the corresponding scaling functions. This provides a continuum formulation of two-dimensional quantum gravity, in terms of the geodesic distance.

For positive integers m and r, one can easily show there exist integers N such that for every map D:{1,2,...,N} -> {1,2,...,r} there exist 2m integers x_1 < ... < x_m < y_1 < ... < y_m which satisfy: (a) D(x_1) = ... = D(x_m), (b) D(y_1) = ... = D(y_m), and (c) 2(x_m-x_1) \leq y_m-x_1. In this paper we investigate the minimal such integer, which we call g(m,r). We compute g(m,2) for m \geq 2; g(m,3) for m \geq 4; and g(m,4) for m \geq 3. Furthermore, we consider g(m,r) for general r. Along with results that bound g(m,r), we compute g(m,r) exactly for the following infinite families of r: {f_{2n+3}}, {2f_{2n+3}}, {18f_{2n}-7f_{2n-2}}, and {23f_{2n}-9f_{2n-2}}, where here f_i is the ith Fibonacci number defined by f_0 = 0 and f_1=1.

After reformulating the representation theory of 0-Hecke algebras in an appropriate family of Yang-Baxter bases, we investigate certain specializations of the Ariki-Koike algebras, obtained by setting q=0 in a suitably normalized version of Shoji's presentation. We classify the simple and projective modules, and describe restrictions, induction products, Cartan invariants and decomposition matrices. This allows us to identify the Grothendieck rings of the towers of algebras in terms of certain graded Hopf algebras known as the Mantaci-Reutenauer descent algebras, and Poirier quasi-symmetric functions. We also describe the Ext-quivers, and conclude with numerical tables.
On partitions avoiding 3-crossings

A partition on $[n]$ has a crossing if there exists $i\_1<i\_2<j\_1<j\_2$ such that $i\_1$ and $j\_1$ are in the same block, $i\_2$ and $j\_2$ are in the same block, but $i\_1$ and $i\_2$ are not in the same block. Recently, Chen et al. refined this classical notion by introducing $k$-crossings, for any integer $k$. In this new terminology, a classical crossing is a 2-crossing. The number of partitions of $[n]$ avoiding 2-crossings is well-known to be the $n$th Catalan number $C\_n={{2n}\choose n}/(n+1)$. This raises the question of counting $k$-noncrossing partitions for $k\ge 3$. We prove that the sequence counting 3-noncrossing partitions is P-recursive, that is, satisfies a linear recurrence relation with polynomial coefficients. We give explicitly such a recursion. However, we conjecture that $k$-noncrossing partitions are not P-recursive, for $k\ge 4$.

In this survey article we present several new developments of `toric topology' concerning the cohomology of face rings (also known as Stanley-Reisner algebras). We prove that the integral cohomology algebra of the moment-angle complex Z_K (equivalently, of the complement U(K) of the coordinate subspace arrangement) determined by a simplicial complex K is isomorphic to the Tor-algebra of the face ring of K. Then we analyse Massey products and formality of this algebra by using a generalisation of Hochster's theorem. We also review several related combinatorial results and problems.

If A is a set of nonnegative integers containing 0, then there is a unique nonempty set B of nonnegative integers such that every positive integer can be written in the form a+b, where a\in A and b\in B, in an even number of ways. We compute the natural density of B for several specific sets A, including the Prouhet-Thue-Morse sequence, {0} \cup {2^n : n \geq 0}, and random sets, and we also study the distribution of densities of B for finite sets A. This problem is motivated by Euler's observation that if A is the set of n that have an odd number of partitions, then B is the set of pentagonal numbers {n(3n+1)/2 : n \in Z}. We also elaborate the connection between this problem and the theory of de Bruijn sequences and linear shift registers.
Triangulated Manifolds with Few Vertices: Vertex-Transitive Triangulations I
We describe an algorithm for the enumeration of (candidates of) vertex-transitive combinatorial $d$-manifolds. With an implementation of our algorithm, we determine, up to combinatorial equivalence, all combinatorial manifolds with a vertex-transitive automorphism group on $n\leq 13$ vertices. With the exception of actions of groups of small order, the enumeration is extended to 14 and 15 vertices.
