In 1970 Nosal gave upper and lower bounds on the sum of the spectral radii of a graph and its complement. We generalize this problem to other eigenvalues and give a number of bounds. We essentially solve the corresponding problem for the second eigenvalues.
Combinatorial secant varieties

The construction of joins and secant varieties is studied in the combinatorial context of monomial ideals. For ideals generated by quadratic monomials, the generators of the secant ideals are obstructions to graph colorings, and this leads to a commutative algebra version of the Strong Perfect Graph Theorem. Given any projective variety and any term order, we explore whether the initial ideal of the secant ideal coincides with the secant ideal of the initial ideal. For toric varieties, this leads to the notion of delightful triangulations of convex polytopes.

We describe a new basis of the ring of quasi-symmetric coinvariants, which is stable by the natural reversal of the set of variables. The indexing set is the set of triangulations of a regular polygon, instead of the set of Dyck paths used for the known basis. On décrit une nouvelle base de l'algèbre des coinvariants quasi-symétriques, qui est stable par l'involution naturelle et indexée par les triangulations d'un polygone régulier.

We consider a very simple Mealy machine (three states over a two-symbol alphabet), and derive some properties of the semigroup it generates. In particular, this is an infinite, finitely generated semigroup; we show that the growth function of its balls behaves asymptotically like n^2.4401..., where this constant is 1 + log(2)/log((1+sqrt(5))/2); that the semigroup satisfies the identity g^6=g^4; and that its lattice of two-sided ideals is a chain.
Vector partition function and representation theory
We apply some recent developments of Baldoni-Beck-Cochet-Vergne on vector partition function, to Kostant's and Steinberg's formulae, for classical Lie algebras $A\_r$, $B\_r$, $C\_r$, $D\_r$. We therefore get efficient {\tt Maple} programs that compute for these Lie algebras: the multiplicity of a weight in an irreducible finite-dimensional representation; the decomposition coefficients of the tensor product of two irreducible finite-dimensional representations. These programs can also calculate associated Ehrhart quasipolynomials.

In this paper we obtain some upper bounds for $b$-chromatic number of $K_{1,t}$ -free graphs, graphs with given minimum clique partition and bipartite graphs. These bounds are in terms of either clique number or chromatic number of graphs or biclique number for bipartite graphs. We show that all the bounds are tight.

We show that the sum of the four parameter weights over all ordinary or strict partitions with parts each less than or equal to a given integer $N$ is expressed by the Al-Salam Chihara polynomials. This weight is a generalization of the Andrews-Stanley partition function. As a corollary we prove C. Boulet's results when the sum runs over all ordinary or strict partitions. In the last section we study the weighted sum of Schur's $P$-functions and $Q$-functions, where the sum runs over all strict partitions.

Let \{M_{r,s}\}_{0< r < p, 0< s < p'} be the irreducible Virasoro modules in the $(p,p')$-minimal series. In our previous paper, we have constructed a monomial basis of \oplus_{r=1}^{p-1}M_{r,s} in the case of $1<p'/p<2$. By `monomials' we mean vectors of the form φ^{(r_L,r_{L-1})}_{-n_L}...φ^{(r_1,r_{0})}_{-n_1} |r_0,s >, where φ_{-n}^{(r',r)} are the Fourier components of the (2,1)-primary field mapping M_{r,s} to M_{r',s}, and |r_0,s > is the highest weight vector of M_{r_0,s}. In this article, for all p<p' with p>2 and s=1, we describe a subset of such monomials which conjecturally forms a basis of \oplus_{r=1}^{p-1}M_{r,1}. We prove that the character of the combinatorial set labeling these monomials coincides with the character of the corresponding Virasoro module. We also verify the conjecture in the case of p=3.
Perfect Skolem sets

A Skolem sequence is a sequence a_1,a_2,...,a_2n (where a_i \in A = {1,...,n }), each a_i occurs exactly twice in the sequence and the two occurrences are exactly a_i positions apart. A set A that can be used to construct Skolem sequences is called a Skolem set. The problem of deciding which sets of the form A = {1,...,n} are Skolem sets was solved by Thoralf Skolem in the late 1950's. We study the natural generalization where A is allowed to be any set of n positive integers. We give necessary conditions for the existence of Skolem sets of this generalized form. We conjecture these necessary conditions to be sufficient, and give computational evidence in favor of our conjecture. We investigate special cases of the conjecture and prove that the conjecture hold for some of them. We also study enumerative questions and show that this problem has strong connections with problems related to permutation displacements.
Discrete differential geometry of proteins: a new method for encoding three-dimensional structures of proteins
In nature the three-dimensional structure of a protein is encoded in the corresponding gene. In this paper we describe a new method for encoding the three-dimensional structure of a protein into a binary sequence. The feature of the method is the correspondence between protein-folding and ``integration''. A protein is approximated by a folded tetrahedron sequence. And the binary code of a protein is obtained as the ``second derivative'' of the shape of the folded tetrahedron sequence. With this method at hand, we can extract static structural information of a protein from its gene. And we can describe the distribution of three-dimensional structures of proteins without any subjective hierarchical classification.
Parallel transport of $Hom$-complexes and the Lovasz conjecture
The groupoid of projectivities, introduced by M. Joswig, serves as a basis for a construction of parallel transport of graph and more general $Hom$-complexes. In this framework we develop a general conceptual approach to the Lovasz Hom-conjecture, recently resolved by E. Babson and D. Kozlov, and extend their result from graphs to simplicial complexes. The paper also provides new evidence that the language and methods of groupoids, after being successfully tested in other major mathematical fields, offer new insights and perspectives for combinatorial applications.
Optimal pebbling of paths and cycles
Distributions of pebbles to the vertices of a graph are said to be solvable when a pebble may be moved to any specified vertex using a sequence of admissible pebbling rules. The optimal pebbling number is the least number of pebbles needed to create a solvable distribution. We provide a simpler proof verifying Pachter, Snevily and Voxman's determination of the optimal pebbling number of paths, and then adapt the ideas in this proof to establish the optimal pebbling number of cycles. Finally, we prove the optimal-pebbling version of Graham's conjecture.
On a Grobner bases structure associated to linear codes

We present a structure associated to the class of linear codes. The properties of that structure are similar to some structures in the linear algebra techniques into the framework of the Gröbner bases tools. It allows to get some insight in the problem of determining whether two codes are permutation equivalent or not. Also an application to the decoding problem is presented, with particular emphasis on the binary case.
Graph Cohomologies from Arbitrary Algebras
For each commutative, graded algebra with finite dimension in each degree, we construct a graded cohomology theory for graphs whose graded Euler characteristic is the chromatic polynomial of the graph. This extends our previous work which was based on the algebra $\mathbb {Z}[x]/(x^2)$.

Inspired by Barany's colourful Caratheodory theorem, we introduce a colourful generalization of Liu's simplicial depth. We prove a parity property and conjecture that the minimum colourful simplicial depth of any core point in any d-dimensional configuration is d^2+1 and that the maximum is d^(d+1)+1. We exhibit configurations attaining each of these depths and apply our results to the problem of bounding monochrome (non-colourful) simplicial depth.
The Lattice of Cyclic Flats of a Matroid

A flat of a matroid is cyclic if it is a union of circuits. The cyclic flats of a matroid form a lattice under inclusion. We study these lattices and explore matroids from the perspective of cyclic flats. In particular, we show that every lattice is isomorphic to the lattice of cyclic flats of a matroid. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a lattice Z of sets and a function r on Z to be the lattice of cyclic flats of a matroid and the restriction of the corresponding rank function to Z. We define cyclic width and show that this concept gives rise to minor-closed, dual-closed classes of matroids, two of which contain only transversal matroids.

Zagaglia Salvi proving explicit closed formulas for Whitney numbers of the distributive lattices of order ideals of the fence poset and crown poset. Moreover, we get explicit closed formulas for Whitney numbers of lattices of order ideals of fences with higher asymmetric peaks.
Criterions for Shellable Multicomplexes
After [J.Herzog, D.Popescu, Finite filtrations of modules and shellable multicomplexes, Preprint IMAR no 4/2005, Bucharest, 2005], the shellability of multicomplexes $Γ$ is given in terms of some special faces of $Γ$ called facets. Here we give a criterion for the shellability in terms of maximal facets. Multigraded pretty clean filtration is the algebraic counterpart of a shellable multicomplex. We give also a criterion for the existence of a multigraded pretty clean filtration.

We consider a self-decimated generator of pseudorandom numbers and examine the preperiod $λ$ and the period $μ$ of its state sequence. We obtain the expectations and variances of $λ$ and $μ$ for the case when decimation steps are chosen randomly and independently from the set {1,2}.
