A combinatorial interpretation of Guo and Zeng's q-Faulhaber coefficients
Recently, Guo and Zeng discovered q-analogues of Faulhaber's formulas for the sums of powers. They left it as an open problem to extend the combinatorial interpretation of Faulhaber's formulas as given by Gessel and Viennot to the q case. In this note we will provide such an interpretation.

We give a sharpened form of Siegel Lemma's w. r. t. the maximum norm. This implies a new lower bound on the greatest element of a sum-distinct set of positive integers (Erdös-Moser problem). The main tools are Minkowski's theorem on successive minima and the Busemann theorem from convex geometry.

Let $p$ be any odd prime number. Let $k$ be any positive integer such that $2\leq k\leq [\frac{p+1}3]+1$. Let $S = (a_1,a_2,...,a_{2p-k})$ be any sequence in ${\Bbb Z}_p$ such that there is no subsequence of length $p$ of $S$ whose sum is zero in $\zp$. Then we prove that we can arrange the sequence $S$ as follows: $ S = (\underbrace{a, a, ..., a}_{u {\rm times}}, \underbrace{b, b, >..., b}_{v {\rm times}}, a_1', a_2', >..., a_{2p-k-u-v}') $ where $u\geq v$, $u+v\geq 2p-2k+2$ and $a-b$ generates $\zp$. This extends a result in \cite{gao10} to all primes $p$ and $k$ satisfying $(p+1)/4+3\leq k\leq (p+1)/3+1$. Also, we prove that if $g$ denotes the number of distinct residue classes modulo $p$ appearing in the sequence $S$ in $\zp$ of length $2p-k$ $(2\leq k\leq [(p+1)/4]+1)$, and $g\geq 2\sqrt{2}\sqrt{k-2}$, then there exists a subsequence of $S$ of length $p$ whose sum is zero in $\zp$.

On the Bias of Traceroute Sampling; or, Power-law Degree Distributions in Regular Graphs

Understanding the structure of the Internet graph is a crucial step for building accurate network models and designing efficient algorithms for Internet applications. Yet, obtaining its graph structure is a surprisingly difficult task, as edges cannot be explicitly queried. Instead, empirical studies rely on traceroutes to build what are essentially single-source, all-destinations, shortest-path trees. These trees only sample a fraction of the network's edges, and a recent paper by Lakhina et al. found empirically that the resuting sample is intrinsically biased. For instance, the observed degree distribution under traceroute sampling exhibits a power law even when the underlying degree distribution is Poisson.
In this paper, we study the bias of traceroute sampling systematically, and, for a very general class of underlying degree distributions, calculate the likely observed distributions explicitly. To do this, we use a continuous-time realization of the process of exposing the BFS tree of a random graph with a given degree distribution, calculate the expected degree distribution of the tree, and show that it is sharply concentrated. As example applications of our machinery, we show how traceroute sampling finds power-law degree distributions in both delta-regular and Poisson-distributed random graphs. Thus, our work puts the observations of Lakhina et al. on a rigorous footing, and extends them to nearly arbitrary degree distributions.
Correlation functions for random involutions

Our interest is in the scaled joint distribution associated with $k$-increasing subsequences for random involutions with a prescribed number of fixed points. We proceed by specifying in terms of correlation functions the same distribution for a Poissonized model in which both the number of symbols in the involution, and the number of fixed points, are random variables. From this, a de-Poissonization argument yields the scaled correlations and distribution function for the random involutions. These are found to coincide with the same quantities known in random matrix theory from the study of ensembles interpolating between the orthogonal and symplectic universality classes at the soft edge, the interpolation being due to a rank 1 perturbation.

We show that if $A=\{a_1,a_2,..., a_k\}$ is a monotone increasing set of numbers, and the differences of the consecutive elements are all distinct, then $|A+B|\geq c|A|^{1/2}|B|$ for any finite set of numbers $B$. The bound is tight up to the constant multiplier.

We show that determining Kapranov rank of tropical matrices is not only NP-hard over any infinite field but also if solving Diophantine equations over the rational numbers is undecidable, then determining Kapranov rank over the rational numbers is undecidable. We prove that Kapranov rank of tropical matrices is not bounded in terms of tropical rank, answering a question of Develin, Santos, and Sturmfels.

Combinatorial rigidity theory seeks to describe the rigidity or flexibility of bar-joint frameworks in R^d in terms of the structure of the underlying graph G. The goal of this article is to broaden the foundations of combinatorial rigidity theory by replacing G with an arbitrary representable matroid M. The ideas of rigidity independence and parallel independence, as well as Laman's and Recski's combinatorial characterizations of 2-dimensional rigidity for graphs, can naturally be extended to this winder setting. As we explain, many of these fundamental concepts really depend only on the matroid associated with G (or its Tutte polynomial) and have little to do with the special nature of graphic matroids or the field R.
Our main result is a "nesting theorem" relating the various kinds of independence. Immediate corollaries include generalizations of Laman's Theorem, as well as the equality of 2-rigidity and 2-parallel independence. A key tool in our study is the space of photos of M, a natural algebraic variety whose irreducibility is closely related to the notions of rigidity independence and parallel independence.
The number of points on this variety, when working over a finite field, turns out to be an interesting Tutte polynomial evaluation.

Moments of secular and inverse secular coefficients, averaged over random matrices from classical groups, are related to the enumeration of non-negative matrices with prescribed row and column sums. Similar random matrix averages are related to certain configurations of vicious random walkers and to the enumeration of plane partitions. The combinatorial meaning of the average of the characteristic polynomial of random Hermitian and Wishart matrices is also investigated, and consequently several simple universality results are derived.

On identities concerning the numbers of crossings and nestings of two edges in matchings

Let M,N be two matchings on [2n]={1, 2, ..., 2n} (possibly M=N) and for a nonnegative integer l let T(M,l) be the set of those matchings on [2n+2l] which can be obtained from M by successively adding l times in all ways the first edge, and similarly for T(N,l). Let s,t in {cr,ne} where cr is the statistic of the number of crossings (in a matching) and ne is the statistic of the number of nestings (possibly s=t). We prove that if the statistics s and t coincide on the sets of matchings T(M,l) and T(N,l) for l=0,1, they must coincide on these sets for every l >= 0; similar identities hold for the joint statistic of cr and ne. These results are instances of a general identity in which crossings and nestings are weighted by elements from an abelian group.

Each group G of nxn permutation matrices has a corresponding permutation polytope, P(G):=conv(G) in R^{nxn}. We relate the structure of P(G) to the transitivity of G. In particular, we show that if G has t nontrivial orbits, then min{2t,floor(n/2)} is a sharp upper bound on the diameter of the graph of P(G); so if G is transitive, the diameter is at most 2. We also show that P(G) achieves its maximal dimension of (n-1)^2 precisely when G is 2-transitive. We then extend results of I. Pak on mixing times for a random walk on P(G). Our work depends on a new result for permutation groups involving writing permutations as products of indecomposable permutations.

We propose an analogue of Solomon's descent theory for the case of a wreath product G ~ S_n, where G is a finite abelian group. Our construction mixes a number of ingredients: Mantaci-Reutenauer algebras, Specht's theory for the representations of wreath products, Okada's extension to wreath products of the Robinson-Schensted correspondence, Poirier's quasisymmetric functions. We insist on the functorial aspect of our definitions and explain the relation of our results with previous work concerning the hyperoctaedral group.

We find the asymptotic number of connected graphs with $k$ vertices and $k-1+l$ edges when $k,l$ approach infinity, reproving a result of Bender, Canfield and McKay. We use the {\em probabilistic method}, analyzing breadth-first search on the random graph $G(k,p)$ for an appropriate edge probability $p$. Central is analysis of a random walk with fixed beginning and end which is tilted to the left.

In this paper we study random graphs with independent and identically distributed degrees of which the tail of the distribution function is regularly varying with exponent $τ\in (2,3)$.
The number of edges between two arbitrary nodes, also called the graph distance or hopcount, in a graph with $N$ nodes is investigated when $N\to \infty$. When $τ\in (2,3)$, this graph distance grows like $2\frac{\log\log N}{|\log(τ-2)|}$. In different papers, the cases $τ>3$ and $τ\in (1,2)$ have been studied. We also study the fluctuations around these asymptotic means, and describe their distributions. The results presented here improve upon results of Reittu and Norros, who prove an upper bound only.
Partial-Fraction Decompositions and Harmonic Number Identities

We show that a finite regular cell complex with the intersection property is a Cohen-Macaulay space iff the top enriched cohomology module is the only nonvanishing one. We prove a comprehensive generalization of Balinski's theorem on convex polytopes. Also we show that for any Cohen-Macaulay cell complex as above, although there is no generalization of the Stanley-Reisner ring of simplicial complexes, there is a generalization of its canonical module.
A pairing between graphs and trees
We develop a canonical pairing between trees and graphs, which passes to their quotients by Jacobi identities. This pairing is an effective and simple tool for understanding the Lie and Poisson operads, providing canonical duals. In the course of showing that this pairing is perfect we reprove some standard facts about the modules Lie(n), establishing standard bases as well as giving a new means to reduce to those bases. We then move on to define duals to free Lie algebras and to develop product, coproduct and operad structures. We give a brief account here to be built on in a number of different directions in future work.
Some identities for the Catalan and Fine numbers
We establish combinatorial interpretations of several identities for the Catalan and Fine numbers and, along the way, we present some new bijections of independent interest. Briefly, we show that C_{n} = 1/(n+1) Sum_{k} (n+1)choose(2k+1) (n+k)choose(k) counts ordered trees on n edges by number of interior vertices adjacent to a leaf, and C_{n} = 2/(n+1) Sum_{k} (n+1)choose(k+2) (n-2)choose(k) counts Dyck n-paths by number of long interior inclines. We also give an analogue for the Fine numbers of Touchard's Catalan number identity.
