Face numbers of 4-Polytopes and 3-Spheres
Published in Proceedings of the ICM, Beijing 2002, vol. 3, 625--636 • Search Publication
In this paper, we discuss f- and flag-vectors of 4-dimensional convex polytopes and cellular 3-spheres. We put forward two crucial parameters of fatness and complexity: Fatness F(P) := (f_1+f_2-20)/(f_0+f_3-10) is large if there are many more edges and 2-faces than there are vertices and facets, while complexity C(P) := (f_{03}-20)/(f_0+f_3-10) is large if every facet has many vertices, and every vertex is in many facets. Recent results suggest that these parameters might allow one to differentiate between the cones of f- or flag-vectors of -- connected Eulerian lattices of length 5 (combinatorial objects), -- strongly regular CW 3-spheres (topological objects), -- convex 4-polytopes (discrete geometric objects), and -- rational convex 4-polytopes (whose study involves arithmetic aspects). Further progress will depend on the derivation of tighter f-vector inequalities for convex 4-polytopes. On the other hand, we will need new construction methods that produce interesting polytopes which are far from being simplicial or simple -- for example, very ``fat'' or ``complex'' 4-polytopes. In this direction, I will report about constructions (from joint work with Michael Joswig, David Eppstein and Greg Kuperberg) that yield -- strongly regular CW 3-spheres of arbitrarily large fatness, -- convex 4-polytopes of fatness larger than 5.048, and -- rational convex 4-polytopes of fatness larger than 5-epsilon.

Matrices autosimilaires
We describe a class of matrices whose determinants are trivial to compute. A nice example of such a matrix is given by considering the symmetric matrix with entries {i+j choose i} (mod 2) in {0,1}, 0 <= i,j < n the binomial coefficients modulo 2 represented by {0,1}. The determinant of the above matrix is then closely related to the Thue-Morse sequence counting digits modulo 2 of binary integers.

Strong gamma-sets and other singular spaces
Published in Topology and its Applications 153 (2005), 620--639 • View PublicationBIB
Whereas the Gerlits-Nagy gamma-property is strictly weaker than the Galvin-Miller strong gamma-property, the corresponding strong notions for the Menger, Hurewicz, Rothberger, Gerlits-Nagy (*), Arkhangel'skii and Sakai properties are equivalent to the original ones. The main result is that almost each of these properties admits the game theoretic characterization suggested by the stronger notion. We also solve a related problem of Kocinac and Scheepers, and answer a question of Iliadis.

On the graph coloring check-digit scheme with applications to verifiable secret sharing
In the paper we apply graph vertex coloring for verification of secret shares. We start from showing how to convert any graph into the number and vice versa. Next, theoretical result concerning properties of n-colorable graphs is stated and proven. From this result we derive graph coloring check-digit scheme. Feasibility of proposed scheme increases with the size of the number, which digits are checked and overall probability of errors. The check-digit scheme is used to build shares verification method that does not require cooperation of the third party. It allows implementing verification structure different from the access structure. It does not depend on particular secret sharing method. It can be used as long as the secret shares can be represented by numbers or graphs.

Permutations Which Avoid 1243 and 2143, Continued Fractions, and Chebyshev Polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Several authors have examined connections between permutations which avoid 132, continued fractions, and Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind. In this paper we prove analogues of some of these results for permutations which avoid 1243 and 2143. Using tools developed to prove these analogues, we give enumerations and generating functions for permutations which avoid 1243, 2143, and certain additional patterns. We also give generating functions for permutations which avoid 1243 and 2143 and contain certain additional patterns exactly once. In all cases we express these generating functions in terms of Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind.

New identities and congruences involving the ranks and cranks of partitions are proved. The proof depends on a new partial differential equation connecting their generating functions.

The toric Hilbert scheme of a rank two lattice is smooth and irreducible
Published • View PublicationBIB
The toric Hilbert scheme of a lattice L in Z^n is the multigraded Hilbert scheme parameterizing all ideals in k[x_1,...,x_n] with Hilbert function value one for every degree in the grading monoid N^n/L. In this paper we show that if L is two-dimensional, then the toric Hilbert scheme of L is smooth and irreducible. This result is false for lattices of dimension three and higher as the toric Hilbert scheme of a rank three lattice can be reducible.

Cluster algebras and Poisson geometry
We introduce a Poisson variety compatible with a cluster algebra structure and a compatible toric action on this variety. We study Poisson and topological properties of the union of generic orbits of this toric action. In particular, we compute the number of connected components of the union of generic toric orbits for cluster algebras over real numbers. As a corollary we compute the number of connected components of refined open Bruhat cells in Grassmanians G(k,n) over real numbers.

Derangements in simple and primitive groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the proportion of fixed point free permutations (derangements) in finite transitive permutation groups. This article is the first in a series where we prove a conjecture of Shalev that the proportion of such elements is bounded away from zero for a simple finite group. In fact, there are much stronger results. This article focuses on finite Chevalley groups of bounded rank. We also discuss derangements in algebraic groups and in more general primitive groups. These results have applications in questions about probabilistic generation of finite simple groups and maps between varieties over finite fields.

On the Isomorphic Embedding of Rectangular Grids in n-cubes
All previously published work on isomorphic grid embeddings into n-cubes has been restricted to binary n-cubes. This paper describes a straightforward method for embedding a A x B grid isomorphically into a k-ary n-cube with k>2.

Rectangular Matrix Models and Combinatorics of Colored Graphs
Published in Nucl.Phys. B648 (2003) 461-496 • View PublicationBIB
We present applications of rectangular matrix models to various combinatorial problems, among which the enumeration of face-bicolored graphs with prescribed vertex degrees, and vertex-tricolored triangulations. We also mention possible applications to Interaction-Round-a-Face and hard-particle statistical models defined on random lattices.

Packing Planes in Four Dimensions and Other Mysteries
Published in In Algebraic Combinatorics and Related Topics (Yamagata 1997), ed. E. Bannai, M. Harada and M. Ozeki, Yamagata University, 1999 • Search Publication
How should you choose a good set of (say) 48 planes in four dimensions? More generally, how do you find packings in Grassmannian spaces? In this article I give a brief introduction to the work that I have been doing on this problem in collaboration with A. R. Calderbank, J. H. Conway, R. H. Hardin, E. M. Rains and P. W. Shor. We have found many nice examples of specific packings (70 4-spaces in 8-space, for instance), several general constructions, and an embedding theorem which shows that a packing in Grassmannian space G(m,n) is a subset of a sphere in R^D, where D = (m+2)(m-1)/2, and leads to a proof that many of our packings are optimal. There are a number of interesting unsolved problems.

Self-Dual Codes
Published in In Handbook of Coding Theory (ed. V. S. Pless and W. C. Huffman), 1998, pp. 177-294 • Search Publication
Self-dual codes are important because many of the best codes known are of this type and they have a rich mathematical theory. Topics covered in this survey include codes over F_2, F_3, F_4, F_q, Z_4, Z_m, shadow codes, weight enumerators, Gleason-Pierce theorem, invariant theory, Gleason theorems, bounds, mass formulae, enumeration, extremal codes, open problems. There is a comprehensive bibliography.
A Group-Theoretic Framework for the Construction of Packings in Grassmannian Spaces
Published in J. Algebraic Combinatorics, 9 (1999), 129-140 • Search Publication
By using totally isotropic subspaces in an orthogonal space Omega^{+}(2i,2), several infinite families of packings of 2^k-dimensional subspaces of real 2^i-dimensional space are constructed, some of which are shown to be optimal packings. A certain Clifford group underlies the construction and links this problem with Barnes-Wall lattices, Kerdock sets and quantum-error-correcting codes.

A Family of Optimal Packings in Grassmannian Manifolds
Published in J. Algebraic Combinatorics, 7 (1998), 157-163 • Search Publication
A remarkable coincidence has led to the discovery of a family of packings of (m^2+m-2) m/2-dimensional subspaces of m-dimensional space, whenever m is a power of 2. These packings meet the ``orthoplex bound'' and are therefore optimal.

Packing Lines, Planes, etc.: Packings in Grassmannian Space
Published in Experimental Mathematics, 5 (1996), 139-159 • Search Publication
This paper addresses the question: how should N n-dimensional subspaces of m-dimensional Euclidean space be arranged so that they are as far apart as possible? The results of extensive computations for modest values of N, n, m are described, as well as a reformulation of the problem that was suggested by these computations. The reformulation gives a way to describe n-dimensional subspaces of m-space as points on a sphere in dimension (m-1)(m+2)/2, which provides a (usually) lower-dimensional representation than the Pluecker embedding, and leads to a proof that many of the new packings are optimal. The results have applications to the graphical display of multi-dimensional data via Asimov's "Grand Tour" method.

On the diagram of 132-avoiding permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
The diagram of a 132-avoiding permutation can easily be characterized: it is simply the diagram of a partition. Based on this fact, we present a new bijection between 132-avoiding and 321-avoiding permutations. We will show that this bijection translates the correspondences between these permutations and Dyck paths given by Krattenthaler and by Billey-Jockusch-Stanley, respectively, to each other. Moreover, the diagram approach yields simple proofs for some enumerative results concerning forbidden patterns in 132-avoiding permutations.

A Note on Optimal Unimodular Lattices
Published in J. Number Theory, 72 (1998), 357-362 • Search Publication
The highest possible minimal norm of a unimodular lattice is determined in dimensions n <= 33. There are precisely five odd 32-dimensional lattices with the highest possible minimal norm (compared with more than 8*10^20 in dimension 33). Unimodular lattices with no roots exist if and only if n >= 23, n not = 25.

The Shadow Theory of Modular and Unimodular Lattices
Published in J. Number Theory, 73 (1998), 359-389 • Search Publication
It is shown that an n-dimensional unimodular lattice has minimal norm at most 2[n/24] +2, unless n = 23 when the bound must be increased by 1. This result was previously known only for even unimodular lattices. Quebbemann had extended the bound for even unimodular lattices to strongly N-modular even lattices for N in {1,2,3,5,6,7,11,14,15,23} ... (*), and analogous bounds are established here for odd lattices satisfying certain technical conditions (which are trivial for N = 1 and 2). For N > 1 in (*), lattices meeting the new bound are constructed that are analogous to the ``shorter'' and ``odd'' Leech lattices. These include an odd associate of the 16-dimensional Barnes-Wall lattice and shorter and odd associates of the Coxeter-Todd lattice. A uniform construction is given for the (even) analogues of the Leech lattice, inspired by the fact that (*) is also the set of square-free orders of elements of the Mathieu group M_{23}.
Multiple Description Vector Quantization with Lattice Codebooks: Design and Analysis
Published in IEEE Trans. Information Theory 47 (2001), 1718-1734 • View PublicationBIB
The problem of designing a multiple description vector quantizer with lattice codebook Lambda is considered. A general solution is given to a labeling problem which plays a crucial role in the design of such quantizers. Numerical performance results are obtained for quantizers based on the lattices A_2 and Z^i, i=1,2,4,8, that make use of this labeling algorithm. The high-rate squared-error distortions for this family of L-dimensional vector quantizers are then analyzed for a memoryless source with probability density function p and differential entropy h(p) < infty. For any a in (0,1) and rate pair (R,R), it is shown that the two-channel distortion d_0 and the channel 1 (or channel 2) distortions d_s satisfy lim_{R -> infty} d_0 2^(2R(1+a)) = (1/4) G(Lambda) 2^{2h(p)} and lim_{R -> infty} d_s 2^(2R(1-a)) = G(S_L) 2^2h(p), where G(Lambda) is the normalized second moment of a Voronoi cell of the lattice Lambda and G(S_L) is the normalized second moment of a sphere in L dimensions.
