Minimal balanced collections are a generalization of partitions of a finite set of n elements and have important applications in cooperative game theory and discrete mathematics. However, their number is not known beyond n = 4. In this paper we investigate the problem of generating minimal balanced collections and implement the Peleg algorithm, permitting to generate all minimal balanced collections till n = 7. Secondly, we provide practical algorithms to check many properties of coalitions and games, based on minimal balanced collections, in a way which is faster than linear programming-based methods. In particular, we construct an algorithm to check if the core of a cooperative game is a stable set in the sense of von Neumann and Morgenstern. The algorithm implements a theorem according to which the core is a stable set if and only if a certain nested balancedness condition is valid. The second level of this condition requires generalizing the notion of balanced collection to balanced sets.
Tropical Donagi theorem
The tropical $n$-gonal construction was introduced in recent work by the first author and D.~Zakharov and structural results for $n = 2,3$ were established. In this article we explore the construction for $n = 4$ and prove a tropical analogue of Donagi's theorem which states that the tetragonal construction is a triality which preserves Prym varieties. This confirms the speculations in previous work and establishes new results on the non-injectivity of the tropical Prym-Torelli morphism. Finally, we demonstrate that the tropical $n$-gonal construction is poorly behaved under edge contractions, thus preventing any immediate moduli-theoretic perspective.
Entrywise transforms preserving matrix positivity and non-positivity
We characterize real and complex functions which, when applied entrywise to square matrices, yield a positive definite matrix if and only if the original matrix is positive definite. We refer to these transformations as sign preservers. Compared to classical work on entrywise preservers of Schoenberg and others, we completely resolve this problem in the harder fixed dimensional setting, extending a similar recent classification of sign preservers obtained for matrices over finite fields. When the matrix dimension is fixed and at least $3$, we show that the sign preservers are precisely the positive scalar multiples of the continuous automorphisms of the underlying field. This is in contrast to the $2 \times 2$ case where the sign preservers are extensions of power functions. These results are built on our classification of $2 \times 2$ entrywise positivity preservers over broader complex domains. Our results yield a complementary connection with a work of Belton, Guillot, Khare, and Putinar (2023) on negativity-preserving transforms. We also extend our sign preserver results to matrices with a structure of zeros, as studied by Guillot, Khare, and Rajaratnam for the entrywise positivity preserver problem. Finally, in the spirit of sign preservers, we address a natural extension to monotone maps, classically studied by Loewner and many others.
Optimal Young's convolutions inequality and its reverse form on the hypercube
We establish sharp forms of Young's convolution inequality and its reverse on the discrete hypercube $\{0,1\}^d$ in the diagonal case $p=q$. As applications, we derive bounds for additive energies and sumsets. We also investigate the non-diagonal regime $p\neq q$, providing necessary conditions for the inequality to hold, along with partial results in the case $r = 2$.
A non-face characterization of spheres on few vertices
We prove a relatively simple combinatorial characterization of simplicial $d$-spheres on $d+4$ vertices. Our criteria are given in terms of the intersection patterns of a simplicial complex's family of minimal non-faces. Namely, let $Σ$ be a simplicial complex on $d+4$ vertices and let $\mathcal{F}$ be its family of minimal non-faces. Then $Σ$ is a $d$-sphere if and only if $|\mathcal{F}|=n\geq 3$ is odd and there is an ordering $A_0,\ldots, A_{n-1}$ of the minimal non-faces, indices taken modulo $n$, such that successive $A_i$ are disjoint and the alternating $\frac{(n-1)}{2}$-fold intersections $A_i\cap A_{i+2} \cap A_{i+4} \cap \cdots \cap A_{i+n-3}$ partition the vertex set.
A simple layered-wheel-like construction
In recent years, there has been significant interest in characterizing the induced subgraph obstructions to bounded treewidth and pathwidth. While this has recently been resolved for pathwidth, the case of treewidth remains open, and prior work has reduced the problem to understanding the layered-wheel-like obstructions -- graphs that contain large complete minor models with each branching set inducing a path; exclude large walls as induced minors; exclude large complete bipartite graphs as induced minors; and exclude large complete subgraphs.
There are various constructions of such graphs, but they are all rather involved. In this paper, we present a simple construction of layered-wheel-like graphs with arbitrarily large treewidth. Three notable features of our construction are: (a) the vertices of degree at least four can be made to be arbitrarily far apart; (b) the girth can be made to be arbitrarily large; and (c) every outerstring induced subgraph of the graphs from our construction has treewidth bounded by an absolute constant. In contrast, among several previously known constructions of layered wheels, none achieves (a); at most one satisfies either (b) or (c); and none satisfies both (b) and (c) simultaneously.
In particular, this is related to a former conjecture of Trotignon, that every graph with large enough treewidth, excluding large walls and large complete bipartite graphs as induced minors, and large complete subgraphs, must contain an outerstring induced subgraph of large treewidth. Our construction provides the first counterexample to this conjecture that can also be made to have arbitrarily large girth.
On the multiplicity of 1 as a Laplacian eigenvalue of a graph
Let $G$ be a graph with $p(G)$ pendant vertices and $q(G)$ quasi-pendant vertices. Denote by $m_{L(G)}(λ)$ the multiplicity of $λ$ as a Laplacian eigenvalue of $G$. Let $\overline{G}$ be the reduced graph of $G$, which can be obtained from $G$ by deleting some pendant vertices such that $p(\overline{G})=q(\overline{G})$. We first prove that $m_{L(G)}(1)=p(G)-q(G)+m_{L(\overline{G})}(1)$. Since deleting pendant path $P_3$ does not change the multiplicity of Laplacian eigenvalue 1 of a graph, we further focus on reduced graphs without pendant path $P_3$. Let $T$ be a reduced tree on $n(\geq 6)$ vertices without pendant path $P_3$, then it is proved that $$m_{L(T)}(1)\leq \frac{n-6}{4},$$ and all the trees attaining the upper bound are characterized completely. As an application, for a reduced unicyclic graph $G$ of order $n\geq 10$ without pendant path $P_3$, we get $$m_{L(G)}(1)\leq \frac{n}{4},$$ and all the unicyclic graphs attaining the upper bound are determined completely.
A proof of the $q$-Foulkes conjecture for Gaussian coefficients when $a$ divides $c$
Foulkes' conjecture has several generalisations due to Doran, Abdesselam--Chipalkatti, Bergeron, and Troyka. For the special linear Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_2(\mathbb{C})$, these assert that given $a \le c \le d \le b$ with $ab=cd$, the $\mathfrak{sl}_2(\mathbb{C})$-representation $\mathrm{Sym}^a\mathrm{Sym}^b\mathbb{C}^2$ is a subrepresentation of $\mathrm{Sym}^c\mathrm{Sym}^d\mathbb{C}^2$. We present a short proof in the case where $a$ divides $c$ or $d$, which includes all prime values of $a$. This is the first proof in this family of conjectures valid for infinitely many values of $a$; previously only the cases $a=2$ and $a=3$ were known.
Matroid isomorphism games
We define and study a collection of matroid isomorphism games corresponding to various axiomatic characterizations of matroids. These are nonlocal games played between two cooperative players. Each game is played on two matroids, and the matroids are isomorphic if and only if the game has a perfect classical winning strategy. We define notions of quantum isomorphism in terms of perfect quantum commuting strategies, and we find a pair of nonisomorphic matroids that are quantum isomorphic. We also give a purely algebraic characterization of quantum isomorphic matroids. Finally, we use this notion of quantum isomorphism to describe a new type of quantum automorphism group of a matroid and derive a sufficient condition for a matroid to have nonclassical quantum automorphism.
On the Estrada Index and Spectral Properties of $k$-Uniform Hypergraphs
Various properties of a hypergraph can be explored through its spectrum. In this paper,we estimate the bound for the sum of $t,\,t\in[1,n]$, largest eigenvalues of a $k$-uniform hypergraph of order $n$. Also, we characterize the $k$-uniform hypergraph with two distinct eigenvalues. We establish bounds for the Estrada index of $k$-uniform hypergraphs based on their number of edges, order and energy. In addition, we obtain the second largest Estrada index among the unicyclic hypergraphs.
Salvetti complexes for conditional oriented matroids
We give a new proof of the fact that the complement of the complexification of a real hyperplane arrangement is homotopy equivalent to the Salvetti complex of the associated oriented matroid. Our proof involves no choices, is relatively easy to visualize, and generalizes to the setting of conditional oriented matroids.

Fix integers $r \ge 2$ and $1\le s_1\le \cdots \le s_{r-1}\le t$ and set $s=\prod_{i=1}^{r-1}s_i$. Let $K=K(s_1, \ldots, s_{r-1}, t)$ denote the complete $r$-partite $r$-uniform hypergraph with parts of size $s_1, \ldots, s_{r-1}, t$. We prove that the Zarankiewicz number $z(n, K)= n^{r-1/s-o(1)}$ provided $t> 3^{s+o(s)}$. Previously this was known only for $t > ((r-1)(s-1))!$ due to Pohoata and Zakharov. Our novel approach, which uses Behrend's construction of sets with no 3 term arithmetic progression, also applies for small values of $s_i$, for example, it gives $z(n, K(2,2,7))=n^{11/4-o(1)}$ where the exponent 11/4 is optimal, whereas previously this was only known with 7 replaced by 721.
The trigonal construction and the second moment of the tropical Prym variety
We use the tropical trigonal construction to calculate the second moment of the tropical Prym variety of all double covers $π:\widetildeΓ\to Γ$ of tropical curves of genus $g(Γ)\leq 4$. The answer is expressed in terms of the signed graphic matroid of the double cover and consists a polynomial and piecewise-polynomial term. We relate the latter term, which does not occur in the analogous formula for the tropical Jacobian, to the problem of extending the Prym--Torelli map from the moduli space of admissible double covers to the second Voronoi compactification of the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties.
Metrics on Permutation Families Defined by a Restriction Graph
Understanding the metric structure of permutation families is fundamental to combinatorics and has applications in social choice theory, bioinformatics, and coding theory. We study permutation families defined by restriction graphs--oriented graphs that constrain the relative order of elements in valid permutations. For any restriction graph $G$, we determine the maximum distance achievable by two permutations under the $\ell_\infty$-metric and provide an explicit algorithm that constructs optimal permutation pairs. Our main contribution characterizes when the Kendall-Tau metric achieves its combinatorial upper bound: this occurs if and only if the poset induced by $G$ has dimension at most 2. When this condition holds, the extremal permutations form a minimal realizer of the poset, revealing a deep connection between metric geometry and poset dimension theory. We apply these results to classical permutation statistics including descent sets and Hessenberg varieties, obtaining explicit formulas and efficient algorithms for computing metric diameters.
Mixed Segre zeta functions and their log-concavity
We introduce and study the mixed Segre zeta function of a sequence of homogeneous ideals in a polynomial ring. This function is a power series encoding information about the mixed Segre classes obtained by extending the ideals to projective spaces of arbitrarily large dimension. Our work generalizes and unifies results by Kleiman and Thorup on mixed Segre classes and by Aluffi on Segre zeta functions. We prove that this power series is rational, with poles corresponding to the degrees of the generators of the ideals. We also show that the mixed Segre zeta function only depends on the integral closure of the ideals. Finally, we prove that the homogenization of the numerator of a modification of the mixed Segre zeta function is denormalized Lorentzian in the sense of Brändén and Huh.
Binomiality of colored Gaussian models
Following earlier work by Coons-Maraj-Misra-Sorea and Misra-Sullivant, we study colored, undirected Gaussian graphical models, and present a necessary and sufficient condition for such a model to have binomial vanishing ideal. These conditions involve Jordan schemes, a variant of association schemes, well-known structures in algebraic combinatorics. Using association schemes without transitive group action, we refute the conjecture by Coons-Maraj-Misra-Sorea that binomiality implies that the color classes must be orbits under the automorphism group of the colored graph.
$q$-Congruences for Z.-W. Sun's generalized polynomials $w^{(α)}_k(x)$
In 2022, Z.-W. Sun defined \begin{equation*} w_k^{(α)}{(x)}=\sum_{j=1}^{k}w(k,j)^αx^{j-1}, \end{equation*} where $k,α$ are positive integers and $w(k,j)=\frac{1}{j}\binom{k-1}{j-1}\binom{k+j}{j-1}$. Let $(x)_{0}=1$ and $(x)_{n}=x(x+1)\cdots(x+n-1)$ for all $n\geq 1$. In this paper, it is proved by $q$-congruences that for any positive integers ${α,β, m,n,r}$, we have \begin{equation*} \frac{(2,n)}{n(n+1)(n+2)}\sum_{k=1}^{n}k^r(k+1)^r(2k+1)w_{k}^{(α)}(x)^{m}\in\mathbb{Z}[x], \end{equation*} \begin{equation*} \frac{(2,n)}{n(n+1)(n+2)}\sum_{k=1}^{n}(-1)^{k}k^r(k+1)^r(2k+1) w_{k}^{(α)}(x)^{m}\in\mathbb{Z}[x], \end{equation*} and \begin{equation*} \frac{2}{[n,n+1,\cdots,n+2β+1]}\sum_{k=1}^{n}(k)_β^r(k+β+1)_β^r(k+β) \prod_{i=0}^{2β-1}w_{k+i}^{(α)}(x)^m\in\mathbb{Z}[x], \end{equation*} where $[n,n+1,\cdots,n+2β+1]$ is the least common multiple of $n$, $n+1$, $\cdots$, $n+2β+1$. Taking $r=β=1$ above will confirm some of Z.-W. Sun's conjectures.
Counting linear congruence systems with a fixed number of solutions
For a prime $p$ and a positive integer $s$ consider a homogeneous linear system over the ring $\mathbb{Z}_{p^s}$ (the ring of integers modulo $p^s$) described by an $n \times m$-matrix. The possible number of solutions to such a system is $p^j$, where $j=0,1,\ldots, sm$. We study the problem of how many $n \times m$-matrices over $\mathbb{Z}_{p^s}$ there are given that we have exactly $p^j$ homogeneous solutions. For the case $s=1$ (when $\mathbb{Z}_{p^s}$ is a field) George von Landsberg proved a general formula in 1893. However, there seems to be few published general results for the case $s>1$ except when we have a unique solution ($j=0$). In this article we present recursive methods for counting such matrices and present explicit formulas for the case when $j\le s$ and $n\ge m$. We will use a generalization of Euler's $φ$-function and Gaussian binomial coefficients to express our formulas. As an application we compute the probability that gcd$(\det(A),p^s)$ gives the number of solutions to the quadratic system $Ax=0$ in $\mathbb{Z}_{p^s}$.
On fourteen equidistribution conjectures of Lv and Zhang and monotone mesh patterns with corner shadings
Three complementation-like involutions are constructed on permutations to prove, and in some cases generalize, all remaining fourteen joint symmetric equidistribution conjectures of Lv and Zhang. Further enumerative results are obtained for several classes of (mesh) pattern-avoiding permutations, where the shadings of all involved mesh patterns are restricted to an opposing pair of corners.
Majority dynamics on finite trees
For an arbitrary finite tree $T$, we find the exact value of the wort-case stabilisation time of majority dynamics on $T$. We also prove that for a perfect rooted cubic tree $T$ with diameter $D$ and uniformly random initial opinions, the dynamics stabilises in time $τ\in(D/4,D/3)$ with high probability.
