Construction of Toroidal Polyhedra corresponding to perfect Chains of wild Tetrahedra
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 1957, Steinhaus proved that a chain of regular tetrahedra, meeting face-to-face and forming a closed loop does not exist. Over the years, various modifications of this statement have been considered and analysed. Weakening the statement by only requiring the tetrahedra of a chain to be wild, i.e. having all faces congruent, results in various examples of such chains. In this paper, we elaborate on the construction of these chains of wild tetrahedra. We therefore introduce the notions of chains and clusters of wild tetrahedra and relate these structures to simplicial surfaces. We establish that clusters and chains of wild tetrahedra can be described by polyhedra in Euclidean 3-space. As a result, we present methods to construct toroidal polyhedra arising from chains and provide a census of such toroidal polyhedra consisting of up to 20 wild tetrahedra. Here, we classify toroidal polyhedra with respect to self-intersections and reflection symmetries. We further prove the existence of an infinite family of toroidal polyhedra emerging from chains of wild tetrahedra and present clusters of wild tetrahedra that yield polyhedra of higher genera.

Totally $Δ$-modular IPs with two non-zeros in most rows
Published • View PublicationBIB
Integer programs (IPs) on constraint matrices with bounded subdeterminants are conjectured to be solvable in polynomial time. We give a strongly polynomial time algorithm to solve IPs where the constraint matrix has bounded subdeterminants and at most two non-zeros per row after removing a constant number of rows and columns. This result extends the work by Fiorini, Joret, Weltge \& Yuditsky (J. ACM 72(1), 1-50 (2025)) by allowing for additional, unifying constraints and variables.
On Approximability of Satisfiable $k$-CSPs: VI
We prove local and global inverse theorems for general $3$-wise correlations over pairwise-connected distributions. Let $μ$ be a distribution over $Σ\times Γ\times Φ$ such that the supports of $μ_{xy}$, $μ_{xz}$, and $μ_{yz}$ are all connected, and let $f: Σ^n \to \mathbb{C}$, $g: Γ^n \to \mathbb{C}$, $h: Φ^n \to \mathbb{C}$ be $1$-bounded functions satisfying \[ \left|\mathbb{E}_{(x,y,z) \sim μ^{\otimes n}}[f(x)g(y)h(z)]\right| \geq \varepsilon. \] In this setting, our local inverse theorem asserts that there is $δ:=\textsf{exp}(-\varepsilon^{-O_μ(1)})$ such that with probability at least $δ$, a random restriction of $f$ down to $δn$ coordinates $δ$-correlates to a product function. To get a global inverse theorem, we prove a restriction inverse theorem for general product functions, stating that if a random restriction of $f$ down to $δn$ coordinates is $δ$-correlated with a product function with probability at least $δ$, then $f$ is $2^{-\textsf{poly}(\log(1/δ))}$-correlated with a function of the form $L\cdot P$, where $L$ is a function of degree $\textsf{poly}(1/δ)$, $\|L\|_2\leq 1$, and $P$ is a product function. We show applications to property testing and to additive combinatorics. In particular, we show the following result via a density increment argument. Let $Σ$ be a finite set and $S \subseteq Σ\times Σ\times Σ$ such that: (1) $(x, x, x) \in S$ for all $x \in S$, and (2) the supports of $S_{xy}$, $S_{xz}$, and $S_{yz}$ are all connected. Then, any set $A \subseteq Σ^n$ with $|Σ|^{-n}|A| \geq Ω((\log \log \log n)^{-c})$ contains $x, y, z \in A$, not all equal, such that $(x_i,y_i,z_i) \in S$ for all $i$. This gives the first reasonable bounds for the restricted 3-AP problem over finite fields.
On Approximability of Satisfiable $k$-CSPs: VII
Let $Σ_1,\ldots,Σ_k$ be finite alphabets, and let $μ$ be a distribution over $Σ_1 \times \dots \times Σ_k$ in which the probability of each atom is at least $α$. We prove that if $μ$ does not admit Abelian embeddings, and $f_i: Σ_i \to \mathbb{C}$ are $1$-bounded functions (for $i=1,\ldots,k$) such that \[ \left|\mathbb{E}_{(x_1,\dots,x_k) \sim μ^{\otimes n}}\Big[f_1(x_1) \dots f_k(x_k)\Big]\right| \geq \varepsilon, \] then there exists $L\colon Σ_1^n\to\mathbb{C}$ of degree at most $d$ and $\|L\|_2\leq 1$ such that $|\langle f_1, L\rangle|\geq δ$, where $d$ and $δ>0$ depend only on $k, α$ and $\varepsilon$. This answers the analytic question posed by Bhangale, Khot, and Minzer (STOC 2022). We also prove several extensions of this result that are useful in subsequent applications.
Reasonable Bounds for Combinatorial Lines of Length Three
We prove that any subset $A \subseteq [3]^n$ with $3^{-n}|A| \ge (\log\log\log\log n)^{-c}$ contains a combinatorial line of length $3$, i.e., $x, y, z \in A$, not all equal, with $x_i=y_i=z_i$ or $(x_i,y_i,z_i)=(0,1,2)$ for all $i = 1, 2, \dots, n$. This improves on the previous best bound of $3^{-n}|A| \ge Ω((\log^* n)^{-1/2})$ of [D.H.J. Polymath, Ann. of Math. 2012].

Defective correspondence coloring of planar graphs
Defective coloring (also known as relaxed or improper coloring) is a generalization of proper coloring defined as follows: for $d \in \mathbb{N}$, a coloring of a graph is $d$-defective if every vertex is colored the same as at most $d$ of its neighbors. We investigate defective coloring of planar graphs in the context of correspondence coloring, a generalization of list coloring introduced by Dvořák and Postle. First we show there exists a planar graph that is not $3$-defective $3$-correspondable, strengthening a recent result of Cho, Choi, Kim, Park, Shan, and Zhu. Then we construct a planar graph that is $1$-defective $3$-correspondable but not $4$-correspondable, thereby extending a recent result of Ma, Xu, and Zhu from list coloring to correspondence coloring. Finally we show all outerplanar graphs are $3$-defective $2$-correspondence colorable, with 3 defects being best possible.

The Polymatroid Representation of a Greedoid, and Associated Galois Connections
A greedoid is a generalization of a matroid allowing for more flexible analyses and modeling of combinatorial optimization problems. However, these structures decimate many matroid properties contributing to their pervasive nature. A polymatroid greedoid [KL85a] presents an interesting middle ground, so we further develop this class. First we prove every local poset greedoid for which the greedy algorithm correctly solves linear optimizations over its basic words must have a polymatroid representation. For this, we use relationships between the lattices of greedoid flats and closed sets of a polymatroid to generalize concepts in [KL85a]. Then, we show our generalization induces a Galois injection between the greedoid flats and closed sets of a representation. Finally, we apply this duality to identify a subclass of polymatroid greedoids with a maximum representation, giving a partial answer to an open problem of [KL85a]. As technical tools for our analyses, we introduce optimism and the Forking Lemma for interval greedoids. Both are pervasive in our work, and are of independent interest.

Advances in Algorithmic Meta Theorems
Tractability results for the model checking problem of logics yield powerful algorithmic meta theorems of the form: Every computational problem expressible in a logic $L$ can be solved efficiently on every class $\mathscr{C}$ of structures satisfying certain conditions. The most prominent logics studied in the field are (counting) monadic second-order logic (C)MSO, and first-order logic FO and its extensions. The complexity of CMSO model checking in general and of FO model checking on monotone graph classes is very well understood. In recent years there has been a rapid and exciting development of new algorithmic meta theorems. On the one hand there has been major progress for FO model checking on hereditary graph classes. This progress was driven by the development of a combinatorial structure theory for the logically defined monadically stable and monadically dependent graph classes, as well as by the advent of the new width measure twinwidth. On the other hand, new algorithmic meta theorems for new logics with expressive power between FO and CMSO offer a new unifying view on methods like the irrelevant vertex technique and recursive understanding. In this paper we overview the recent advances in algorithmic meta theorems and provide rough sketches for the methods to prove them.

Improved Upper Bounds on Key Invariants of Erdős-Rényi Numerical Semigroups
De Loera, O'Neill and Wilburne introduced a general model for random numerical semigroups in which each positive integer is chosen independently with some probability p to be a generator, and proved upper and lower bounds on the expected Frobenius number and expected embedding dimensions. We use a range of probabilistic methods to improve the upper bounds to within a polylogarithmic factor of the lower bounds in each case. As one of the tools to do this, we prove that for any prime q, if A is a random subset of the cyclic group Z_q whose size is of order log(q) and k is also of order log(q), then with high probability the k-fold sumset kA is all of Z_q.
When are off-diagonal hypergraph Ramsey numbers polynomial?
Published • View PublicationBIB
A natural open problem in Ramsey theory is to determine those $3$-graphs $H$ for which the off-diagonal Ramsey number $r(H, K_n^{(3)})$ grows polynomially with $n$. We make substantial progress on this question by showing that if $H$ is tightly connected or has at most two tight components, then $r(H, K_n^{(3)})$ grows polynomially if and only if $H$ is contained in an iterated blowup of an edge.

Proof of Merca's stronger conjecture on truncated Jacobi triple product series
In the study of theta series and partition functions, Andrews and Merca, Guo and Zeng independently conjectured that a truncated Jacobi triple product series has nonnegative coefficients. This conjecture was proved analytically by Mao and combinatorially by Yee. In 2021, Merca proposed a stronger version of the conjecture, that is, for positive integers $1\leq S<R$ with $k\geq 1$, the coefficient of $q^n$ in the theta series \[ \frac{(-1)^{k} \sum_{j=k}^{\infty}(-1)^j q^{R j(j+1) / 2}\left(q^{-Sj}-q^{( j+1) S}\right)}{\left(q^S, q^{R-S}; q^R\right)_{\infty}} \] is nonnegative. Recently, some very special cases of this conjecture have been proved and studied. For any given $R, S$ and $k$, we take $s=S/(S,R), r=R/(S,R)$ which are coprime, equivalently. In this paper, we confirm Merca's stronger conjecture for sufficiently large $n$. Furthermore, for given $r, s$ and $k$, we provide a systematic method to determine an integer $N(r, s, k)$ such that Merca's stronger conjecture holds for $ n\geq N(r,s,k) $. More precisely, we decompose the infinite product in the denominator of the above theta series into two parts, one of which can be interpreted as the generating function of partitions with certain restricted parts and the other is a nonmodular infinite product. We derive the general upper and lower bounds for the coefficients of these two parts by using the partition theoretical method and the circle method, respectively. Further multiplying the partition part by the numerator of the theta series and considering the convolution with the nonmodular infinite product, we obtain the constant $N(r,s,k)$ and confirm Merca's stronger conjecture when $n\geq N(r,s,k)$. Moreover, we also show that when $k$ is sufficiently large, this conjecture holds directly for any $n\geq 0$.

Simplicial vs. cubical spheres, polyhedral products and the Nevo-Petersen conjecture
We prove that a Murai sphere is flag if and only if it is a nerve complex of a flag nestohedron and classify all the polytopes arising in this way. Our classification implies that flag Murai spheres satisfy the Nevo-Petersen conjecture on $γ$-vectors of flag homology spheres. We continue by showing that a Bier sphere is minimally non-Golod if and only if it is a nerve complex of a truncation polytope different from a simplex and classify all the polytopes arising in this way. Finally, the notion of a cubical Bier sphere is introduced based on the polyhedral product construction, and we study combinatorial and geometrical properties of these cubical complexes.

Characterizing and Transforming DAGs within the I-LCA Framework
Published • View PublicationBIB
We explore the connections between clusters and least common ancestors (LCAs) in directed acyclic graphs (DAGs), focusing on the interplay between so-called $I$-lca-relevant DAGs and DAGs with the $I$-lca-property. Here, $I$ denotes a set of integers. In $I$-lca-relevant DAGs, each vertex is the unique LCA for some subset $A$ of leaves of size $|A|\in I$, whereas in a DAG with the $I$-lca-property there exists a unique LCA for every subset $A$ of leaves satisfying $|A|\in I$. We elaborate on the difference between these two properties and establish their close relationship to pre-$I$-ary and $I$-ary set systems. This, in turn, generalizes results established for (pre-)binary and $k$-ary set systems. Moreover, we build upon recently established results that use a simple operator $\ominus$, enabling the transformation of arbitrary DAGs into $I$-lca-relevant DAGs. This process reduces unnecessary complexity while preserving key structural properties of the original DAG. The set $C_G$ consists of all clusters in a DAG $G$, where clusters correspond to the descendant leaves of vertices. While in some cases $C_H = C_G$ when transforming $G$ into an $I$-lca-relevant DAG $H$, it often happens that certain clusters in $C_G$ do not appear as clusters in $H$. To understand this phenomenon in detail, we characterize the subset of clusters in $C_G$ that remain in $H$ for DAGs $G$ with the $I$-lca-property. Furthermore, we show that the set $W$ of vertices required to transform $G$ into $H = G \ominus W$ is uniquely determined for such DAGs. This, in turn, allows us to show that the ``shortcut-free'' version of the transformed DAG $H$ is always a tree or a galled-tree whenever $C_G$ represents the clustering system of a tree or galled-tree and $G$ has the $I$-lca-property. In the latter case $C_H = C_G$ always holds.

Monochromatic configurations induced from the set of sums of two squares
The set of sums of two squares plays an important role in the elementary number theory. Di Nasso investigated several infinite monochromatic patterns in integers considering operations induced from affine maps and asked whether one can find different sets of infinite monochromatic configurations in natural numbers with the structure induced from the set of sums of two squares. This article investigates Nasso's question and along the way proves several classical Ramsey-type theorems in this new setting.

Vertices of the monotone path polytopes of hypersimplicies
The monotone path polytope of a polytope $P$ encapsulates the combinatorial behavior of the shadow vertex rule (a pivot rule used in linear programming) on $P$. Computing monotone path polytopes is the entry door to the larger subject of fiber polytopes, for which explicitly computing examples remains a challenge. We first give a detailed presentation on how to construct monotone path polytopes. Monotone path polytopes of cubes and simplices have been known since the seminal article of Billera and Sturmfels. We extend these results to hypersimplices by linking this problem to the combinatorics of lattice paths. Indeed, we give a combinatorial model which describes the vertices of the monotone path polytope of the hypersimplex $Δ(n, 2)$ (for any generic direction). With this model, we give a precise count of these vertices, and furthermore count the number of coherent monotone paths on $Δ(n, 2)$ according to their lengths. We prove that some of the results obtained also hold for hypersimplices $Δ(n, k)$ for $k\geq 2$.
Sharp Thresholds for Factors in Random Graphs
Let $F$ be a graph on $r$ vertices and let $G$ be a graph on $n$ vertices. Then an $F$-factor in $G$ is a subgraph of $G$ composed of $n/r$ vertex-disjoint copies of $F$, if $r$ divides $n$. In other words, an $F$-factor yields a partition of the $n$ vertices of $G$. The study of such $F$-factors in the Erdős-Rényi random graph dates back to Erdős himself. Decades later, in 2008, Johansson, Kahn and Vu established the thresholds for the existence of an $F$-factor for strictly 1-balanced $F$ -- up to the leading constant. The sharp thresholds, meaning the leading constants, were obtained only recently by Riordan and Heckel, but only for complete graphs $F=K_r$ and for so-called nice graphs. Their results rely on sophisticated couplings that utilize the recent, celebrated solution of Shamir's problem by Kahn. We extend the couplings by Riordan and Heckel to any strictly 1-balanced $F$ and thereby obtain the sharp threshold for the existence of an $F$-factor. In particular, we confirm the thirty year old conjecture by Rucínski that this sharp threshold indeed coincides with the sharp threshold for the disappearance of the last vertices which are not contained in a copy of $F$.

The structure of sets with cube-avoiding sumsets
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that if $d \ge 2$ is an integer, $G$ is a finite abelian group, $Z_0$ is a subset of $G$ not contained in any strict coset in $G$, and $E_1,\dots,E_d$ are dense subsets of $G^n$ such that the sumset $E_1+\dots+E_d$ avoids $Z_0^n$ then $E_1, \dots, E_d$ essentially have bounded dimension. More precisely, they are almost entirely contained in sets $E_1' \times G^{I^c}, \dots, E_d' \times G^{I^c}$, where the size of $I \subset [n]$ is non-zero and independent of $n$, and $E_1',\dots,E_d'$ are subsets of $G^{I}$ such that the sumset $E_1'+\dots+E_d'$ avoids $Z_0^I$.
Computing the permanental polynomial of $4k$-intercyclic bipartite graphs
Published in American Journal of Combinatorics, 3:35-43, (2024) • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a bipartite graph with adjacency matrix $A(G)$. The characteristic polynomial $φ(G,x)=\det(xI-A(G))$ and the permanental polynomial $π(G,x) = \text{per}(xI-A(G))$ are both graph invariants used to distinguish graphs. For bipartite graphs, we define the modified characteristic polynomial, which is obtained by changing the signs of some of the coefficients of $φ(G,x)$. For $4k$-intercyclic bipartite graphs, i.e., those for which the removal of any $4k$-cycle results in a $C_{4k}$-free graph, we provide an expression for $π(G,x)$ in terms of the modified characteristic polynomial of the graph and its subgraphs. Our approach is purely combinatorial in contrast to the Pfaffian orientation method found in the literature to compute the permanental polynomial.
The dib-chromatic number of digraphs

We study an extension to directed graphs of the parameter called the $b$-chromatic number of a graph in terms of acyclic vertex colorings: the dib-chromatic number. We give general bounds for this parameter. We also show some results about tournaments and regular digraphs.
Improved Lower Bounds for all Odd-Query Locally Decodable Codes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that for every odd $q\geq 3$, any $q$-query binary, possibly non-linear locally decodable code ($q$-LDC) $E:\{\pm1\}^k \rightarrow \{\pm1\}^n$ must satisfy $k \leq \tilde{O}(n^{1-2/q})$. For even $q$, this bound was established in a sequence of prior works. For $q=3$, the above bound was achieved in a recent work of Alrabiah, Guruswami, Kothari and Manohar using an argument that crucially exploits known exponential lower bounds for $2$-LDCs. Their strategy hits an inherent bottleneck for $q \geq 5$. Our key insight is identifying a general sufficient condition on the hypergraph of local decoding sets called $t$-approximate strong regularity. This condition demands that 1) the number of hyperedges containing any given subset of vertices of size $t$ (i.e., its co-degree) be equal to the same but arbitrary value $d_t$ up to a multiplicative constant slack, and 2) all other co-degrees be upper-bounded relative to $d_t$. This condition significantly generalizes related proposals in prior works that demand absolute upper bounds on all co-degrees. We give an argument based on spectral bounds on Kikuchi Matrices that lower bounds the blocklength of any LDC whose local decoding sets satisfy $t$-approximate strong regularity for any $t \leq q$. Crucially, unlike prior works, our argument works despite having no non-trivial absolute upper bound on the co-degrees of any set of vertices. To apply our argument to arbitrary $q$-LDCs, we give a new, greedy, approximate strong regularity decomposition that shows that arbitrary, dense enough hypergraphs can be partitioned (up to a small error) into approximately strongly regular pieces satisfying the required relative bounds on the co-degrees.
